As a Barbie collector, I kinda miss when a doll line gets into Mattel's nerve every once in a while because they tend to be comfortable whenever they think there's no competition and that leads to dolls with poor quality and execution.
I am both. I think both Barbie and Bratz dolls are iconic and will forever have a special place in my heart! ❤ That being said, if I had to pick one, I'd have to ask which era are we talking? Because if it's current playline Barbie? I'd choose Bratz, but if we're talking 90s and early 00s Barbies? Barbie, all the way!
As a kid I had a lot of Barbie dolls, suddenly I started receiving Bratz dolls as Christmas presents and birthday presents, so they became a huge part of my childhood. However my mom got rid of all my childhood Bratz and Barbie dolls. Unfortunately I can’t really re collect my Bratz dolls because they are extremely expensive on the second hand market, so I went with Barbie instead during the beginning of my high school years. But Monster high quickly became my ultimate favorite because I loved what they stood for. That every monster was welcome freaky flaws and all, and me being autistic and ADHD this quote really resonated with me. In conclusion I’m more of a monster high fan lol.
I love both doll lines. I think each one of them have their highlights moments 🤷🏻♂️. Love that you mentioned Lily Martinez , she also was involved experimenting with the monster high prototypes 🫶🏻. She’s such a talented woman
My favorite part of the book was from the final lawsuit when they ended up making Mattel’s CEO pick between a Mattel doll and a Bratz doll and he sat there for a long time and still guessed wrong! So crazy😭
It's so funny that people objected to Bratz style. I was a 90's teen & wore dresses like that for CHURCH & my grandmother bought me the clothes! SHE even picked them out. She bought me a black lace shirt & a faux leather mini dress that I wore together TO CHURCH! I didn't even kiss a boy until I was 18.😂 I still have my OG Sasha, the one at 13:14 , I her because I owned that exact outfit down to the lipstick. So many of the things the Brats wore were what we did. That Sasha was my 1st mini me. I wouldn't have thought about dolls at that age if the fashion wasn't that accurate.
To me, what hurt the Bratz was the secret date commercial. parents wouldn’t have been so peeved if it weren’t for that. And MGA could’ve released more dolls for the live action film-Specifically, dolls with outfits from the movie, and NOT only just Cloe and Yasmin. When Mattel isn’t competing with Bratz, Barbie actually does well
My Scene was designed before Bratz Lilly Martinez and Carter Bryant worked on it together, in fact Madison was inspiredby a friend of Lilly you can see that in the original sketches! Carter Bryant was just not feeling it and left redesigned the concept and sold it to MGA while Lilly Martinez was left at Mattel and worked on the my scene like .. not to mention Diva Starz came before Bratz but ofcourse noone is taking about them or giving them the flowers that they deserve!!!!
I am more of a Barbie gal - I was 11 when Bratz came out and thought myself "too old" to play with dolls at that age. We all know how silly that is now, but such was the early 2000s... Plus their removable feet kinda freaked me out. 😂
I was a Bratz girlie. I couldn't tell you why but I just never really liked Barbie growing up and I don't think I ever owned one. But Bratz? I loved the characters, the styles, the show, the movies and it just resonated with me. I remember seeing all the anti-Bratz stuff on the news and my mum said it was ridiculous and never stopped me from playing with them
I was born in 82 so grew up with Barbie and also Sindy. Such a great time to grow up! 80s and 90s toys were and still are the best in my opinion 🤗 oh and also Jem! I will say, I do like the look of bratz dolls but I've never owned any unfortunately..
The Mattel bratz were horrifying! Mattel stay in your lane, you make the cute/pretty dolls and MGA makes the fashionable/trendy dolls. I need both in my life.
Am a Bratz kind of person while I grow up with Barbie. I perper the OG Bratz as I am someone who likes alt and generally more stylish fashion plus the drama.
I thought Bryant was named after Bryant Park. Most of the dolls in the my scene line, with the exception of Barbie, seemed to be named after places in New York.
Mattel was so petty, shady, bitter, and desperate. The fact that they started to make their own Bratz dolls after getting the rights is very telling. I prefer Barbie aesthetically, but the lawsuit was tacky. Clearly they were scared someone dethroned Barbie. Nowadays they don't even try to compete with quality, they just make their dolls wholesome and affordable for the sake of longevity. I haven't seen a fashionable Barbie in a long time.
My first love was Barbie, i'm born in 93, i was 8years old when Bratz came to life, in 2003 i got my first one and it was all of my personality after that, Bratz is and will always be the true love for me, it change everything, MGAE know how to reach popularity and for that, there's no question. I'M A BRATZ FAN.
Similar case happened in the comics. For a time a company called FAWCETT COMICS created the character of Captain Marvel. And, back then, outsold the Superman comics. DC sued Fawcett claiming that the character was a copy of Superman. Eventually DC won. And not only did Fawcett not continue selling the comics but DC bought the company and incorporated the character (and all the ones created under Fawcett) to the DC Universe. Thing is that because of Marvel proper they couldn´t call the character Captain Marvel in their covers. Inside in the stories there was no problem. Instead, the would use the name Shazam. Up until 2011 when DC decided to just call the character Shazam himself to avoid issues.
Joey, you did a FANTASTIC job with this story of the details on the Bratz vs Barbie court battle. By coincidence I just bought the book "you don't own me" by Orly Lobel. I'll definitely be reading it this weekend. This was excellent work. I was on the edge of my seat! Love your channel.❤❤❤❤
This was a really well-researched video! Thank you for doing this. I have always been a Barbie girl with some Bratz dolls rather than the other way around. I certainly spend more money on Barbie than I do on Bratz because you can't buy everything! I grew up with Barbie so that's where my loyalty lies but I still enjoy Bratz. Wouldn't it be nice to live in a world where everybody just got along?....
The first wave of bratz are awesome no doubt about it. But I like the adult aspect of Barbie and the fact she can do anything meanwhile bratz only seem to focus on high school life whereas barbie can be like an astronaut or doctor or even a soldier (paratrooper Barbie reference). Also she goes well with my Gi joes . Bratz exist and they’re are glamorous, but I just can’t deny the longevity and history of Barbie not just for herself but the toy industry as a whole. Sorry Bratz but Barbie for the win. Again, first wave is beyond gorgeous, I actually have the first wave reproductions, but thats it for bratz.
I listened to the book on tape and it was very interesting. Poor Carter Bryant lost everything and his "roommate" even stole from him. Very Sad for such a creative person.
I'm BOTH. I love the competitive c**ntiness between them... However, after how badly Bratz dropped the ball with their Mean Girls release I'm leaning towards more Barbie... 💅🏻
Yeah, they're ugly, but the fashion was incredibly accurate for me at that age. Sasha at 13:14 was the 1st doll I purchased as an adult. I think I was 19.
Carter Bryant was always a shady guy! Imagine working at a company while also working for the competitor? Now that is low on so many levels crearly tells you what kind of human he is ....
Barbie´s movie has revived the old flames, it's MGA's turn to make its own movie where they expose Mattel's unscrupulous side. Also have the men in a positive light, something that Barbie movie was criticized. I'm not in either team, I prefer toy sets and figurines more (currently buying Play Mobil Scooby-Doo) but recently I have interest in male dolls, I would love to get some Kens and Bratz Boys
I’m more of a Bratz girl now, but Barbie was my everything in the 90’s. I still love Barbie but I’m so disappointed in her quality these days.. I’ve been debating on recollecting all the Barbie’s I had as a little girl, but that would be so much money😅
Many of us aren't big Bratz fans right now, because of the stab in the back to us collectors with the Mean Girls Colab...😂 But I like both lines. But Barbie much more. There's just more to the dolls. More face molds, more articulation, more clothes to get for them. I'll always be a Barbie girl. But I got about a dozen Bratz too.
Don’t get me started on that lol I was close to getting Regina but the stupid 3 minute line sealed my unfortunate fate. I like Bratz I just really want my childhood collection back which I can’t do because the dolls I had are reselling for insane prices!
@@TessesKingdom i know. I went as fast as anyone could have with Regina checkout, & was in line too, but missed both Regina & Cady. I will try for the 2 pack, but I'm expecting to lose. 🥴
I would love a Generation Girls video!!! I still have my Mari Nakano doll from back then, she was the only doll I kept from my childhood and I feel like no one remembers her. That said, I was more of a Bratz kid when I was younger (I was 11 in 2001 so the perfect age for it), and I always really wanted Jade. Never got her. My aunt got me Sasha instead because she was the only one left at the store
I kinda love both actually with barbie she's out of your reach and that works for her with bratz you can buy their clothes and wear them and that works for them
As a Barbie collector, I kinda miss when a doll line gets into Mattel's nerve every once in a while because they tend to be comfortable whenever they think there's no competition and that leads to dolls with poor quality and execution.
yes
This is better than any MMA fight ever
I had always been a bratz person
However i never hated barbie because she's the reason why all of the awesome fashion doll in this world exist❤
And my scene was great! Mattel needs needs the competition.
I’m gonna always be both a Bratz and a Barbie boy.
Me too! 🙂
Barbie, all the way!
what makes Bratz so incredibly iconic is the fact that the illustrated depiction of Bratz is just as Iconic.
Oh this is the video I've been waiting for. **opens chip bag**
As a kid I had a lot of Barbie dolls, suddenly I started receiving Bratz dolls as Christmas presents and birthday presents, so they became a huge part of my childhood. i find a LOT of bratz dolls at my local Ross
@@nella.jelenn yes the reproductions but the ones I had as child have not been reproduced yet.
💗I'm a Barbie Girl! In a Barbie World! 💗
The way its an important history lesson for us the adult doll collector is so iconic ❤❤
I love both doll lines.
I think each one of them have their highlights moments 🤷🏻♂️.
Love that you mentioned Lily Martinez , she also was involved experimenting with the monster high prototypes 🫶🏻.
She’s such a talented woman
It would be quite hilarious for them to do a collab tbh hahaha
Omg that would be so iconic!!
My favorite part of the book was from the final lawsuit when they ended up making Mattel’s CEO pick between a Mattel doll and a Bratz doll and he sat there for a long time and still guessed wrong! So crazy😭
What?? He couldn't tell the difference?
It's so funny that people objected to Bratz style. I was a 90's teen & wore dresses like that for CHURCH & my grandmother bought me the clothes! SHE even picked them out. Thanks for this video! And OMG I am shocked to know why Bryant was discontinued!! I love My Scene more than Bratz, I hate Bratz’s proportions
Yes, I've only thrifted 2 Bratz Boyz. One is Bryant, and I'd heard he disappeared, but didn't know why hehe
I grew up more with Barbie’s (and mh) than bratz but as I gotten older I have preferred bratz cause of their style and clothing lol
To me, what hurt the Bratz was the secret date commercial. parents wouldn’t have been so peeved if it weren’t for that. And MGA could’ve released more dolls for the live action film-Specifically, dolls with outfits from the movie, and NOT only just Cloe and Yasmin.
When Mattel isn’t competing with Bratz, Barbie actually does well
because of the lore and my own pettiness, i loveee bratz and consider myself a bratz girllll alsoooo love this video, you did amazing!! ❤
Barbie, and it's not even close.
I clicked on this video so quick 💕💕😭 bratz gal all the way
This is one of my favourite videos ever made
Wow thank you! I’m glad you appreciate my hard work

Omggggg such a hard decision… gotta be Monster high! 🤣🤣 both barbie and bratz have their good moments though!
I’m a Barbie girl THATS my answer
Teen Barbie❤❤
Seconded!
Good dolls come out when there's hot competition

Barbie all the way for me!
I'm so excited for my scene! I wanna see how mga will clap back to my scene's comeback!
Ps; still waiting for ever after high and bratzillaz comeback
I thought Bryant was named after Bryant Park. Most of the dolls in the my scene line, with the exception of Barbie, seemed to be named after places in New York.
Very well researched. No wonder it has taken so long to get the video out! Well done!
I was born a Barbie girl, but turned to Bratz as soon as they came out. However, now I like and collect both. I prefer Mattel as a company.
Growing up, I've always adored Barbie, but Bratz certainly has its charm. I'm a simple woman, I see girly I like it
They need to work it out on the remix...🤣🤣🤣
Omggg init!
i've been following the mga vs mattel drama for more than half my life, it's one of the best company feuds to learn about, really love this video!

Joey, you did a FANTASTIC job with this story of the details on the Bratz vs Barbie court battle.
By coincidence I just bought the book "you don't own me" by Orly Lobel. I'll definitely be reading it this weekend.

21:33 the difference is Genie Magic is Desi and Arabic kinda I am trying not to be offensive I swear!) where as Golden Bling is Egyptian
True. Golden Bling pays homage to the Egyptian culture, alongside Cleo & Nefera de Nile from Monster High.
Thanks for the history.
The first wave of bratz are awesome no doubt about it. Where is the the video from 10:36 from?? I love how you can see my scene doll heads in the background
I would also add My Scene into the mix.
I was alarmed by the Bratz feet being removable as a kid it freaked me out lolll
I listened to the book on tape and it was very interesting. Poor Carter Bryant lost everything and his "roommate" even stole from him. Very Sad for such a creative person.
I enjoy watching your channels Joey you are the man thank you for sharing this video about the Bratz versus Barbie
YES I would love to hear you talk about Generation Girl Babie line. ❤😊
so interesting ! thanks Joey ! i learned a lot today i'm Bratz and i'm Barbie , depends on my mood , i need both of them that's all
no thanks I prefer LICCA and JENNY! ❤
This was such a good video!
I think its awesome that yasmin is named after issaic laren daughter jasmine ❤
Damn, you are SO close to 100k

I love this video and the details ❤❤
Two of these big companies should just live their life and going on about their business Mattel in MGA
Oh my god, the barbie at 19:25 is one of the only ones I had. I totally forgot about it until that photo popped up!
I’ll always be a Barbie girl🩷
Bratz were cool but I could never get passed how their whole foot’s just came off! 😅
I'm BOTH. I love the competitive c**ntiness between them... However, after how badly Bratz dropped the ball with their Mean Girls release I'm leaning towards more Barbie... 💅🏻
For me just as long barbie silkstone continues and monster than I’ll just be sipping the tea✌🏻
I’m BOTH PERIODT
Without disrespecting anyone, I give my opinion, my preferences in dolls.
Always Barbie, never Bratz. I don't like dolls with big heads and huge feet.
no offense taken. In fact, my mother feels the same.😂 However, she didn't mind me having bratz.
Yeah, they're ugly, but the fashion was incredibly accurate for me at that age. Sasha at 13:14 was the 1st doll I purchased as an adult. I think I was 19.
i completely agree, they’re so short & odd looking with those size 14 feet.
Agree 100%
I am actually both, and it would be a dream come true if they'd make a collab 😭💀
Carter Bryant was always a shady guy! Imagine working at a company while also working for the competitor? Now that is low on so many levels crearly tells you what kind of human he is ....
Girl it’s a company they don’t care about you 💀
“Bratz being petty queens” 😭🙏
Excellent video! I didn’t know any of that. Well done, Joey.
And I was way too old for Bratz, so it’s always Barbie. Always. ❤
I’m a bratz girl THATS my answer💋
That court case went on for YEARS!! And it only ended in 2012!!
Both
