It’s so bittersweet because back when Barbie monopolized the fashion doll world she had to keep up, they had to innovate. Now they do bare minimum and give the world throw away dolls.

@@brinac1.6.scaledolls the thing with Mattel now is it's trying to save the cost of production plus the inflation gets crazy high . Your $20 doll 10 yrs ago is like $50 now.. this means that if we want the same quality like from 10 or 15 yrs ago. Then we have to pay 50 or 60 dollars for a fashionista doll... Mattel wouldn't do that because its less profit margin and people will buy less.. they would rather decrease the production cost than. jack up the retail price.. if you want quality dolls, try checking Integrity toys dolls .. crazy quality but crazy price.
mattel knows that the market of barbie is within the less costly range. They dont want to be like integrity toys who markets more on the mature buyers.

@@brinac1.6.scaledolls inflation is to blame. Mattel would rather decrease the production cost (resulting to lower quality) than increase the price of the doll.. i dont think many people would buy a basic fashionista doll (with the same quality from ten years ago) for $50..

Barbie came out in 1959. I was 9 years old. I already had a Ginny and a Jill doll. My father was amused at Barbie's exaggerated proportions. My mother was horrified. I begged for a Barbie. All my friends had one. Instead, I got a Baby Marie/Ginnette clone with a wardrobe. This went on, year after year until the Christmas I was headed for my 17th birthday. OK, I was still 16. I heard my father tell my mother to just get me the d*mned Barbie. My mother got a boot box from our Endicott Johnson's shoe store and filled it with an entire handmade wardrobe. A leopard corduroy coat and hat, short sets, capris, party dresses, ball gowns, day dresses, hats, gloves, peignoirs, baby doll pj's, hats handbags...name it, it was there. Eventually, that Barbie/wardrobe and the Baby Marie/wardrobe got passed on to two younger cousins. I still have Ginny and Jill. My birthday gift to me this year was a Made-to-Move Barbie, and I also bought on eBay the repro patterns my mother bought all those decades ago. I'm going to replicate that trousseau for me and my three grandgirls. Then I'm going to outfit three Kens...one for me and one for each of my grandsons. If I could figure out how to make the weaponry, I'd give them each a US Navy GI Joe/Ken. I'm a US Navy veteran and, yes, I have a US Navy Barbie from 2005 (a gift from my daughter who was then in the Navy herself, and a US Navy Ken from the 1960s I got in bits and pieces on eBay. Happy 65th birthday, Barbie...from one of your oldest fans.

I remember the first time I saw the Barbie Extra dolls in the store. It was the first time since the mid 90's that I'd felt excitement about a non-holiday release. They had so much STYLE which is what I want from my fashion dolls ykwim? I didn't feel any urge to collect dolls in yoga leggings, no shade, it's just not what I'm into. Barbie has so so so much fashion potential and I like to think kids and adults alike would appreciate a return to that glam ott style of the 80's/90's.
When I go to the stores I want to like the new Barbies so much but it's just not there for me :( Hoping for a return to glam soon! (or at least fashion-focus)

I have kissing Barbie! Her clothes were lost, and not sure I know where her stamp is, not that it would still work, but she's one of my girls staying forever. Oh Crystal Barbie, I am so lucky I have her. She has a rip in her gown & rubber bands rotted so hair fell down but IDC. Also have great shape. I don't know how I totally missed that 1985 astronaut Barbie. When I was little I wanted to be an astronaut ballerina haha.
I wish there were ore repros. I am not going to spend my life savings on any collectables. I only collect modern dolls but I am glad that last year I picked up the repro ponytail (brunette) and solo spotlight, not expensive at all.
In 1992 I was busy being a goth witch horse girl and started college and was not interested in Barbie again until the late 90s, but would not let the ones I still had go.
Do you know of the StarDoll line? They were out around 2011, loved their funky hair & clothes & they had some great accessory packs.

The first woman in space was, indeed, a Russian cosmonaut. Her name was Valentina Tereshkova. She married a fellow astronaut and they had a daughter--the first child to be born of two parents who had traveled in space.

I kinda wish JEM had a bit more time in the 80s Doll aisle [but in hinesight I couldn't imagine a 90s or 00s JEM, she was such a 80s girl]

I really wanted the JEM dolls as a kid, I was a Tween around the time, but my Dad would have freaked out, kind of secretly watched the cartoons too [With 'i'm waiting for the show after' as a ready excuse]... it was a diff time back then and my Dad was very Macho@@BeautyInsideABox

I don’t understand american parents keeps on complaining about the toys and most of them can’t even teach a good moral to their kids and keeps on blaming to the toys about their child’s behaviour.

Man, we say it again and again: As good as the diversity in the line has become, the fun factor is totally gone, when u see the fun, creative dolls from the 80s and 90s and then the bland „realistic people“-dolls with zero fashion sense nowadays. It’s so sad to see. :-)

Well, there were Francie and Christie dolls in the late 60s from the Barbie line who were black. Is that maybe what you were thinking of?

The earlier dark-toned dolls were Barbie’s friends and given names other than Barbie. The 1980 doll was the first dark-toned doll to be called Barbie too. It changed the idea that the star (Barbie) had to be white.

It’s been a heck of a journey. I’m fifty, and there aren’t that many brands (certainly not toys) that are around from my childhood. I cringe at the quality decline, especially in play line, but I’m glad she’s still there, and I do still find some dolls I like each year.
