It’s not a disease, it’s therapy. I am 74 years old and I still collect dolls. They bring me comfortable in an otherwise depressive world. 🤗🤗🤗

I totally agree as a fellow collector❤ dolls are my kids and are my therapy too in hard times.. but even the best medicine in overdose is potentially harmful. One period of my time I couldn't afford partial rent and food to buy only dolls and got time till find again my right line. I collect till today but more mindful now ;)

Dolls have brought me joy and happiness, but I find it's easy for me to cross the line where the hobby becomes stressful instead of fulfilling. I have to be conscious of that and step away when I need to. I seem to easily fall into buying a doll "because it's there" and not necessarily because I truly want it. Sometimes I feel dull and almost sick, as if I've eaten too many sweets.

Hi, Julie. I am an old lady. I have always loved dolls. I agree with you on all points. I started collecting Barbie dolls about 45 years ago when my daughter was a little girl. I started for her. She never liked dolls so then I started collecting Barbie dolls for me. I am not adverse to being considered a big kid. I am a big kid!!! I try to limit myself to 150 Barbie and Ken dolls. Storage you know. My problem is I like to build Barbie doll houses. I limit myself to 15 houses. Storage you know. I also collect books. Yeah- storage you know. I enjoyed your video.

A collector can collect anything from art to dolls to match book holders. Collections or what we go to museums to admire there’s no such thing as a child versus adult collector. A collector is a collector, a person, put it together items and displays them. I am thankful to all the collectors of museums whose collections I’ve been able to admire over the years who are no longer with us at the times hold onto things they are treasure keepers from the past bits of history that have been preserved. May we all live our own life to our satisfaction?

Creating your own parameters is one of the fun parts of creating a collection. I feel like the more specific the parameters the better the collection. There are individual dolls I would love to buy but if they don’t fit in with what I want my collection to be, I don’t buy them. Helps save money too!

I really ramped up my doll collecting during the pandemic, and now I am dealing with the fallout from that. Fortunately it's mostly a space issue and not a financial one. After 10+ years of collecting, I have finally hit the point where I have more dolls than I would reasonably want to display, even if I did have the space to do it. I am in the process of editing my collection, which is a lot harder than just not buying the dolls in the first place ha ha.

I always wanted to find Barbies I had as a child. The husband would always talk me out of it. But when he got really sick which lasted a few years, I found comfort and joy in searching and bidding on eBay and attending a few barbie shows to find these Barbies and then some memories came back of Barbies I forgot I had like the Dawn and Darci dolls. Collecting vintage clothing from the 60's - 70's is also something I still try and find from time to time. But like you said, it became a little obsessive in the beginning but has definitely slowed down. But I love to change their clothing from time to time. I do have 2 display cases, and now my 3 year old granddaughter loves them and it does bring a smile to my face watching her enjoy them as much as I do.🥰

Thank you for your thoughts☺️ I think the biggest aspect in keeping your collecting hobby healthy is patience!! I started collecting again after the death of my father because he used to gift me dolls. I spent all my money and basically lost my mind. Only when I realized that this is not a healthy way of coping and distanced myself for a while, I could collect in a healthy way again. It‘s really important (as you said) to limit yourself. I do the same trick and just keep one space for all my dolls. I just wanna keep the ones that I find beautiful or that mean a lot to me. I only buy one doll a month or every two months. It keeps me grateful for the collection I already have. Sorry for rambling but I wanted to share this 🤍

I feel like I have collecting constipation. I constantly justify why NOT to buy dolls to the point I don’t buy them but really really want to. I’d love to collect without feeling guilty that the money could be spent in a “better” way. I have a bit of an addictive personality though, once I start then I find it very very difficult to stop. Then one day I did stop, I sold off most of my collection bar 3 dolls and yet I spend most days looking online at dolls and longing to expand my collection. Then beating myself up and telling myself what all else the money could go on instead of cluttering up the place with dolls. It’s really frustrating me that I can’t seem to give myself the permission to buy what would make me happy.

    • @TheDollCoven

I can definitely relate to the mindset of feeling like I could be spending money on "something better/more useful." It took me a really long time to overcome it, and sometimes I still have to manage those feelings of guilt/retail remorse. I remind myself: What better way to spend my money than on something that brings me joy and that isn't hurting anyone else? After all, "tomorrow is never promised." Sending you all positive vibes as you navigate your collecting constipation. You'll get through it!

My 23 year old child is upset that I spend so much on dolls when she needs dental work. I sent $2000. for her dental work, skipping getting my own done, and putting off other expenses as well, and I'm somewhat bitter about it as it's put me in debt (which I wouldn't have been without the heavy doll buying). I feel some friction between us now. I think there's some battle over who's the kid here, but I know I have unresolved issues from childhood and I'm desperately trying to work them out. I'll probably never finish doing that. I think buying Barbies though is better than buying liquor, and I noticed my focus shifted from one to the other last summer when I quit drinking. I also have been diagnosed obsessive compulsive personality (let's not call it a disorder), so if I go off Barbies, I'll switch again to something else to obsess over, in my endless drive to find the perfect "solution". There's also the topic of "object constancy". I talk about that in my psychology of doll collecting upload, 'cause I'm thinking about this too.

I wanted to stop the pain, and do the same kind thing that my Dad had done for me. Just the once though.

I really enjoyed this video and wholeheartedly agree with you on all these points. Like you i collect dolls and decks. Both collections have gone through the "acquiring" stage and now reached a nice balance where i enjoy them without necessarily expanding the collection. Im by no means a completeist though, i cherry pick dolls i love and who fit in with my overall aesthetic. My collecting took off when i felt settled in my home after years of moving around and living out of suitcases. It makes me feel settled and grounded. I absolutely stand by the idea that we are adults so we can do as we please as long as it doesn't cause harm to ourselves or other people (my partner thought Blythes were weird at first but he got used to them and now he appreciates their 1970s vibes) 😊❤️🧡💛💚🩵💙💜🩷 i went over to collecting vintage clothes for my dolls which us cheaper, takes up a fraction of the space and is in a way more fun as you get so many looks out of the same dolls ✨💕💖😻
