I’ve always had this fascination with these tiny island nations in Oceania ever since I visited Hawaii. Hawaii is cool, but I don’t think you really get the authentic island experience when everything is so tourist-y. Now enter these tiny island nations that go completely unknown by most of the rest of the world; there’s pristine beaches, coral reefs, islands to explore, and rich culture somewhere here, the only issue is well… trying to get there in the first place.
and there are plenty of islands (maybe not Tuvalu though) that have a much better balance of touristy and authentic than Hawaii, where you can enjoy your luxury beach cabins and pay with credit cards but also be extremely close to the traditional islander lifestyle

It's incredible how you managed to get two Tuvaluans on your show, Barbs, as I due to how their so rare outside of their native country and how I don't think contacting the ones who live in the country is easy. No wonder you call people like Carrie, Terry from the Solomon Islands, and Malika from Turkmenistan "unicorns". It was great to hear the Tuvaluan language! Very interesting video. The individual regions (islands) being important for personal identity even though it's a small country kinda reminded me of my own country Switzerland.
I haven't yet had the good fortune to visit Tuvalu, one day I will get there, I know a few Tuvalu who live in NZ, really looking forward to visiting. Can't wait for the episode on Niue, and Taiwan, when they come.

Another awesome video! I absolutely love traveling to obscure places and learning about different ways of life. Although I'm 19 so I haven't traveled much. Tuvalu is now on my travel list, to spend a few days on each of the "islands"

I’ve heard from mangrove videos that mangroves grow really well in sea water. Would this actually work to reduce or even prevent sinkage of small island nations?
Ya maybe but a big problem is sea level because at some point the trees will be too small and get washed away, but yeah and in many places where they take out mangroves the effects of erosion and waves get worse

Hey, I've been there, to Funafuti. The Pandanus fruit was interesting, the coconuts were good, the crabs were great and the coconut crabs were amazing. I remember one of the days I was there, it was raining really heavily and I had to go out to get some fishing line for something. I could have waited until the rain stopped, but my clothes were due for a wash anyway. The path I took from where we were staying to the shops, I ran both ways about 380m, brought me along the side of the air strip for about 140m, running through water that was nearly up to my knees. All in all, a very memorable experience.
The channel needs to add bougainville (I hope I said that right) which will gain independence in 2027 so they might be add it. Which they really need to add!

@@sammijanejones Barbz is starting with the countries recognized by the United Nations. Hence, neither Taiwan nor Somaliland (which he ACTUALLY VISITED) have appeared. He said he'd do the unrecognized countries after! As this video said, Tuvalu is one of the few countries to even recognize Taiwan as a country.
I’ve heard from mangrove videos that mangroves grow really well in sea water.
Would this actually work to reduce or even prevent sinkage of small island nations?
Ya maybe but a big problem is sea level because at some point the trees will be too small and get washed away, but yeah and in many places where they take out mangroves the effects of erosion and waves get worse

Hey, I've been there, to Funafuti. The Pandanus fruit was interesting, the coconuts were good, the crabs were great and the coconut crabs were amazing.
I remember one of the days I was there, it was raining really heavily and I had to go out to get some fishing line for something. I could have waited until the rain stopped, but my clothes were due for a wash anyway. The path I took from where we were staying to the shops, I ran both ways about 380m, brought me along the side of the air strip for about 140m, running through water that was nearly up to my knees. All in all, a very memorable experience.
