One of amazing things about Tonga is that in 1939, after the German invasion of Poland, the Kingdom of Tonga was among the first to declare war against Germany. Subsequently, as a result of a public campaign the people of Tonga funded two Spitfire fighter aircrafts. At that time the Kingdom was ruled by Queen Sālote Tupou III. Such a small remote country helped Poland before their allies like France or UK even realized what had happened. It is a small fact but really shows how exceptional these people are.

FUN FACT, PAUL! In Chile 🇨🇱, especially in the southern part, specifically in Chiloé Island, a local delicacy is "Curanto" (from Mapudungun language "Kurantu", Kura being "stone"). It is basically lots of seafood, fish, pork, chicken and sometimes beef, put on a grill or directly on the burning charcoal and stones, and then covered with leaves and even a little bit of dirt, and more stones. All is cooked by the steam, and is really delicious. It is believed that Polynesians got in contact with the local Mapuche people (Williche/Mapuches of the South), having trade between them, and leaving some influence, such as the UMU that became CURANTO/KURANTU. Also the Kollongka or Mapuche Chicken has roots from the Polynesian Chicken, so at least in this part of South America, the first to arrive were not Europeans but Polynesians. In fact if you stuck a giant pin through the planet in the UK it would probably emerge in Tonga. Turns out they had to leave because of the volcano. They are the friendliest family I've ever met and am glad to have them as neighbours.

Learning about the pacific island nations is so cool, we are hardly taught anything about them in school. I found it interesting that some of the islands are suffixed with "tapu", in Hindustani (the colloquially used mix of Hindi and Urdu often spoken in North India), islands are also called "tapu". Though I think that a connection is not likely to exist. Great video Barby! Excited for Trinidad and Tobago, especially because there are so many Indians there! Love from India!
An actual Tongan other Polynesian may have to correct me, but I think in one of those cases, "tapu" there means "holy", which is actually the origin of the English word "taboo".

I'm part of the Tongan population that lives in New Zealand lol, yes NZ do have the largest Tongan population and they live in areas by the Airport or by the main City Centre in Auckland. Also another interesting fact, we also have a significant number of Tongans who have PhDs (Tonga's government sometimes has an entire cabinet where they all have PhDs) as education is seen as a vital element of success in Tongan culture. Just to clarify, in 2:22, the name was spelt in correctly - it's Lupepau'u International Airport. Also, in 4:12, the name was also spelt incorrectly, it's Tupou. In the sports section I think you mistook the NRL for the AFL. There aren’t a lot of (any?) Tongan players in the AFL (Australian Football League) but there are heaps in the NRL (National Rugby League) two vastly different sports. Also, don’t forget there is a fair size difference between Rugby and Rugby League - Rugby (on its own) refers to Rugby Union (15 man no tackle limit and played in more countries) - Which Tonga is ok at - while Rugby League is 13 a side with a six tackle rule (there are other difference of course) and played in less countries - but Tonga is pretty good at at League (mainly because there aren’t that many countries playing it and there are a lot of Tongans in the NRL which is the pinnacle competition of the sport. anyway - enjoyed the episode as usual. good work. keep it coming

Sport - There is 2 kinds of Rugby, Rugby League and Rugby Union, with a significant difference between the two. Tonga play both with their Rugby League team now ranked #3 in the world and represented throughout the NRL (which is the Australian competition). From what I know there are no Tongans playing professional AFL (Australian Rules Football) although Rugby League & Union player Israel Folau did fairly unsuccessfully like 10 years ago.

I don't think there's many Tongans in the Australian Football League (AFL). You do see a lot of players of Tongan background in the NRL, which is our rugby league competition. There's two versions of rugby: rugby league and rugby union, which is most popular with Pacific Islanders. The AFL is a completely different type of football to the NFL

Learning about the pacific island nations is so cool, we are hardly taught anything about them in school. I found it interesting that some of the islands are suffixed with "tapu", in Hindustani (the colloquially used mix of Hindi and Urdu often spoken in North India), islands are also called "tapu". Though I think that a connection is not likely to exist. Great video Barby! Excited for Trinidad and Tobago, especially because there are so many Indians there! Love from India!
An actual Tongan other Polynesian may have to correct me, but I think in one of those cases, "tapu" there means "holy", which is actually the origin of the English word "taboo".
I know Shiva is a Hindu deity, so if your at a party and somebody tell you siva in samoan you should dance 💃 also you should check out rongorongo and indus script too hehe

Fun fact over here in Ghana in the early 2010s a musician released a song called Tonga the message in the song insinuating that Tonga means the female reproductive organ (You know what I mean) the song went so viral that it was due to this song that we got to know that there's a country called Tonga

I'm part of the Tongan population that lives in New Zealand lol, yes NZ do have the largest Tongan population and they live in areas by the Airport or by the main City Centre in Auckland. Also another interesting fact, we also have a significant number of Tongans who have PhDs (Tonga's government sometimes has an entire cabinet where they all have PhDs) as education is seen as a vital element of success in Tongan culture. Just to clarify, in 2:22, the name was spelt in correctly - it's Lupepau'u International Airport. Also, in 4:12, the name was also spelt incorrectly, it's Tupou. Otherwise, thank you so much for this video! I thoroughly enjoyed it and happy to see our homeland on the map!

I was really hoping you would get to goto Tonga for this episode (you mentioned looking forward to it in an earlier ep) but still I hope its on your list of future travels as I think you will love the food, history, beautiful nature and hospitality of the Tongan peoole😘
In the sports section I think you mistook the NRL for the AFL. There aren’t a lot of (any?) Tongan players in the AFL (Australian Football League) but there are heaps in the NRL (National Rugby League) two vastly different sports.
Also, don’t forget there is a fair size difference between Rugby and Rugby League - Rugby (on its own) refers to Rugby Union (15 man no tackle limit and played in more countries) - Which Tonga is ok at - while Rugby League is 13 a side with a six tackle rule (there are other difference of course) and played in less countries - but Tonga is pretty good at at League (mainly because there aren’t that many countries playing it and there are a lot of Tongans in the NRL which is the pinnacle competition of the sport.

Glad to see you pronouncing Tonga correctly. I’m not Tongan, but as a fun fact, many Austronesian languages (including Polynesian languages) commonly have the ‘ng’ sound. If you wanna vocalize the ‘g’, you add another g. For example, Tongga.

Sport - There is 2 kinds of Rugby, Rugby League and Rugby Union, with a significant difference between the two. Tonga play both with their Rugby League team now ranked #3 in the world and represented throughout the NRL (which is the Australian competition). From what I know there are no Tongans playing professional AFL (Australian Rules Football) although Rugby League & Union player Israel Folau did fairly unsuccessfully like 10 years ago.
I had the privilege and pleasure of meeting many Tongans when I lived in Salt Lake. Some of the most loving and amazing people ever!

I don't think there's many Tongans in the Australian Football League (AFL). You do see a lot of players of Tongan background in the NRL, which is our rugby league competition. There's two versions of rugby: rugby league and rugby union, which is most popular with Pacific Islanders. The AFL is a completely different type of football to the NFL
