- Hi All,
Woke up one day and my monitor wasn't working. All the hardware was working correctly, but a setting in Windows 11 changed. Here's how I fixed it.

Amazing! I had exactly the same issue and you saved me! ❤ Thank you for sharing your fix!
Saved my life tonight at work, I work remote & lost all three additional screens when my cat stepped on the keyboard - this worked! Thank you!
same for me just absolutely weird
Thank you, Mike! Just the combination WindowsKey+P fixed my issue. I couldn't select Extended these Displays from System-Display settings because it kept disappearing right after I moved mouse.
What happens when you try that setting but the monitor still doesn’t display anything? I have the same issue and can’t get anything to work using windows or from control panel.. it’s driving me nuts.
It happens to me recently too. The only common thing is every time it has been after a reboot following the install of Windows Update.
What was weird is I have two laptops (a work one and a personal one), each hooked up to its own docking station and each of those docking stations has a couple of monitors. The issue only recurs with my personal laptop hooked up to my personal docking station. If I plug the work laptop into the personal docking station, no issue. If I plug the personal laptop into the work docking station, again no issue. If I unplug the monitors from the personal docking station and go direct to personal laptop no problem. It only happens when running monitors via the docking station. And as I say, only following the installation of an update. I know how to fix it each now but it's weird as anything that it happens.
Thank you! The problem was as you say. I just plugged the monitor cable from docking station to the laptop and works like a charm.
Thank you very much Mike. Just had this happen to me today. Unbelievable! Thanks for your video and getting my monitors to work. 👍
Glad it helped!
I also had same problem - weirder though. I normally have two monitor connected, one through a docking station (DIV) and one direct to laptop (HDMI). The monitor via the docking station stopped working. I checked monitor all cables etc - all OK. I connected a 3rd monitor via the docking station and suddenly all three monitors worked. I disconnected the third monitor and the second monitor stopped again. Interchanges all connections and cables and still the same response. I disconnected the tmeporary 3rd monitor and noticed that in Display Settings my normal 2nd monitor was showing as not active. Followed your guidance and now all is back to normal. THanks a million. By the way, don't know if a coincidence but this happended directly after a Windows 11 update and restart overnight.
It is related. 4th time I have yhe same problem, but never the same solucionar. Every fkn Windows update. I'm really frustrated
Holy shit you are A LIFE SAVER BRO!! ❤ I was freaking out thinking something serious had happened hahah.. but thanks to you the solution was simple! 😁 For some reason the "second screen only" was selected when I pressed Windows + P, then I selected "duplicate" and it went back to normal (Laptop screen + monitor = both working)
Haha no problem bud
Thank you! Been sitting here fiddling with settings for an hour with no luck
For me none of this worked, my graphics driver was updated already, I tried uninstalling, reinstalling, performing a roll back of the Nvidia driver to a previous stable version. Stopped and started the Nvidia processes in the services app, tried all the hacks I possibly could in the display settings section, none worked. I remembered that recently I had turned the "Intel Virtual Technology" feature ON from the BIOS settings for a software I wanted to use, so I turned it back OFF, and my second monitor immediately came back on. That was it. For any other folks who might have the same problem.
Whoa i will try it hold on
It didn't work😢
Thank you so much. As soon as you recommended Windows + P and extend displays my third monitor started working.
Great to hear!
Same issue, out of the blue my main monitor quit working. Couldn't find anything else on it, but this fixed it. Thanks for the post!
Windows key - P and then Extend fixed it for me! My laptop monitor wasn't working when I connected to a particular external screen (worked in my other office no issues). Usually the extend option is under display properties, but it wasn't available because only 1 monitor was showing. I wasn't aware of WK-P but that fixed it.
Can’t believe it was that simple! Awesome thank you!
Glad it helped!
You are doing god's work. This was the only solution after 2 days of looking.
No problem!
Straight to the point and actually fixed my problem unlike the 741328 other "solutions" I found online.
Thank a million! I've been struggling with this for days! Verified Fix!
No problem!
I was searching the web but nothing for few days I even formatted my pc hhh but when I saw your video OMG it was this simple thanks bro.
You are welcome!
When i press windows + P it doesnt save my selection of extend. When i click anywhere else and re open windows + P it hasnt saved.
I was in such a panic about this since I took 24 hours to install a couple parts into my computer after taking it mostly apart for water cooling cleaning, only to have this issue.
Exactly what fixed it for me, thanks
Glad it helped!
Thank you! This fixed the issue with my computer, but I have a friend's that having the same issue with Windows 10 instead, there's no "disconnect this display" option. What would you suggest?
Does anyone have an answer for this
oh my lord ive this issue was making me go crazy
couldnt find any fix
tnx alot for the super easy fix :D ^^
hey, commenting on an old video for help. im having trouble with 2 monitors, when i click on extend displays my main monitor goes black but is still active not sure how to fiix it but iit works if i do duplicate displays or show only 1
you‘re a lifesaver, man! i don‘t know what triggered windows to change the setting to only output to my 2nd monitor but here we are…
thank you, thank you, thank you!
Np :)
This just happened to me after installing some software a short while ago that, in hindsight, I should not have installed. The software shut down my system after it installed, and when I rebooted, my #2 (of 3) monitor appeared to be booting up normally, until it didn't. I was screaming mad and frustrated because nothing I tried to get it back was working. Of course, I uninstalled the offending software, but that did not help. I Googled myriad variations of "monitor suddenly not working" ... "not recognized" ... etc., and came up empty. It finally occurred to me to try Googling "display not active," which led me down this yellow brick road of success. I did see that option to disconnect monitor, but it did not seem intuitively useful to click on it. But I'm glad you didn't let faulty intuition get in the way of your troubleshooting LOL. THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU, Michael! I can get back to work now and stop pulling my hair out and expanding my sailor vocabulary! :)
Haha glad I was able to solve your trouble Karen :)
bro thank you so much. got on my pc to work and had the exact same issues as you. you're a legend!
No problem 👍
Thanks a bunch. It solved the problem.
Thank You So Much. This simple trick really helped me. ❤❤
Same issue except I use 3 monitors plus my laptop, when I hit extend display for the 3 monitor is shuts my laptop screen off and only displays on the 3 monitors. I would like to still use my laptop as a screen, is this possible??
Micheal thanks man your the best you fixed this problem for me man. I subbed!
Super helpful! Thanks
just what I needed. Thanks!
i cant even take in how dumb i was. thank you so much!
Thanks Michael. Great fix. Complete garbage on the part of Microsoft that this happens and isn't easy to identity, but thankfully I found your video. Great work!
OMG Thank you so much for dropping knowledge on the world my brother!
You're welcome!
I swear I did the same exact thing you said before watching the video so I cam across your video and tried again and boom! it worked lol thank you for sharing
Thank you so much for the solution, I was really worried about my monitor. I got eventually using your method, so, appreciate it
Excellent you saved my life I thought it was a HDMI Cable issue thank you
man, you just saved me, that worked like a charm
Well done Mike ...Thanks!
Having same issue but when i click on extend display it revert to disconnect
same did you find a solution?
Man!! This video really saved my bacon brother thank you! I went in and was screwing around with my graphics card when suddenly I had the laptop display go "inactive." Thank god I found your video.

You are a life saver 2years after.... Thank you
TYSM! THIS ISSUE HAUNTED ME FOR MONTHS ON MY LAPTOP AND I HAD TO GET A MONITER FOR THIS ISSUE, NOW ITS FIXED
Thank you so much!
Dude i love you that was so easy. God bless
This fixed my issue. Just simply WindowsKey + p and select extends screens. thanks a lot
This did make the monitor come on but a pop up comes up saying keep the change. I'm not able to click on it because the mouse gets stuck in the other screen. Everything was working fine before.
I have this same problem but I’m on windows 10 and i did what you said I clicked extend and it doesn’t want to show up on the second monitor.
Im on w8ndows 10 and my issue was that i had hdr active on one monitor but the 2nd monitor doesnt have hdr so it deactivated the 2nd monitor. Disabled it and the 2nd monitir popped on! Perfect!!!
all i had to do was the Windows key + P and extend ^^ had no idea! thanks alot!
How can I do this on windows 10?? I don't have a disconnect button.
Brother thank you super much, I tried everything, in one minutes with your video I fix it
Thank you my man, thank you a milion times
fucking hell my windows 10 did the same thing with my main monitor god bless you dude saved my bacon
This guy a goat fr when he said to put it on extend after the windows key p thing it fixed it already
🐐🐐🐐
got same problem but after i accept this it throw me back to small monitor with no signal (not active)
WOW, THANK YOU IT WORKED!!!
Windows Key + P was enough for me! It was apparently set to PC Screen only instead of extend lol
Glad it worked out!
For some reason mine won't even allow that option. Just says "The display settings could not be saved. please try a different combination of display settings."
same, have you found a solution?
fixed it right away thanks man strait and to the point to
No problem :)
It worked perfectly for me. Thank you soooo much. :)
Wow you saved my day! I had exactly the same problem. Thanks! Subscribing! :)
No problem!
Thank you, this fixed my issue!
Did not fix my issue. I have a laptop with 2 additional monitors. The 3rd is an older one using DVI connected to a HDMI converter, connected to a USB-C convertor... I know, once I list it here, it sounds complicated, but the 3 monitors have worked for me for 6 months. Then today for some reason the 3rd, and older monitor, is not recognised...
The cables are fine, I updated drivers, incl GeForce RTX 3060. But the 3rd is not recopgnised...
Any feedback?
[Additional Information]
I have connected the 3rd monitor to a different machine and it works there, I brought the 2nd monitor from the second machine, and it does not work on the Windows 11 machine.
Thanks dude i was kinda scared my tv is new and i thought i fed something up

You're welcome!
My Monitor is stuck on disconnect - it automatically reverts the changes even though Im doing exactly what you are. Has anyone dealt with this before?
I'm currently having this issue. But my third display is my sound bar. All I'm trying to do is get audio working. It's worked before. Now it's not.

This BS just happened to me! I was cruising through eBay and it just went to sleep like I had not touched the mouse in 10 min. next thing you know, I cant see my laptop!

Thank you!
Your a life saver!!
Thanks :)
I have connected 3 external monitors to my Lenovo Legion Y520 Laptop (Using 1 Hdmi port from the laptop and 2 more monitors using a Usb-c hub which has another 2 Hdmi ports). The 3 monitors work fine (1=Laptop monitor, 2=Monitor no. 1 and 3=Monitor no.2). BUT, the other 4th monitor is greyed out in display setting. When I try this 'Extend desktop to this display) option on the greyed out 4th monitor it starts working but the other 2nd monitor gets disconnected. Mean to say only 3 monitors in total are getting displayed and the other one is greyed out. PLEASE HELP
Same here
If you find the solution please tell me...if i find i will tell
LIFE SAVER THANK YOU!!!
your a life saver
Thanks for the video brother! However my issue was not fixed after I followed exactly what you did in the video. After I clicked “ Extend these displays” and clicked “ save changes.” The setting automatically went back to show only on 2. Also, my monitor is still activated at all. I am sooo confused
Same happens to me, did you fix it yet?
I have the same issue. Any fix?
@@benfriedman2914 Hey Ben, yeah I figured out how to fix it. All you have to do is go to Nvidia Control Panel, Set up Multiple Displays, and then ensure both monitors are selected.
thanks @@zzaacchhii however, this computer does not have a Nvidia display card.
@@benfriedman2914 restart your laptop or pc and unplug your cables, windows 11 display has issues. Once your laptop or pc is back up plug in your display cables and should start working. If still does not work then proceed with extending the monitors that aren’t working
I downlaaded a chess game, it had HDR enabled by default and all of sudden my monitor stopped working as it changed the settings in the system, i just had to unclick HDR mode and i started working, not the fix i was looking for but send me in the right direction, Thanks man

King among men - saved my morning. Thanks for sharing
That's great man! Life saver
Glad it worked
i have the same problem but with 2 monitors and this didnt seem to work, any advise
Im on w8ndows 10 and my issue was that i had hdr active on one monitor but the 2nd monitor doesnt have hdr so it deactivated the 2nd monitor. Disabled it and the 2nd monitir popped on! Perfect!!!
@@ChrisTheRUclipsCritic how do I disable it
sadly when I change the default "disconnect this display" to "extend desktop to this display" my desktop freezes. I sincerely think my monitor is bricked since I had already tried legacy gpu drivers for my 3080ti as well as new, removing the drivers entirely from system32 prior to doing so.
I also had tried doing the same thing from nvidia control panel. same result when I got to activate the 3rd ancor communications device.
brotha ur a g thx helped me out a ton
No problem big dawg
How to make a 3 minute video feel like 30 minutes.
