- This is the first video in a series dedicated to advanced brickwork. First episode is a twisted pier. I explain, in detail, how to prepare the template for the twist, how to lay the bricks and in what order. All of this is finished off nicely with some epic cinematic footage of the completed build. Hope you enjoy!!

For a plumbing point set out your square on the foundation with pencil cross your corners to find the centre. Use a compass/tramel to draw a circle connecting all four corners and that’s your pluming point boss. Good video 👍🏻
I'm verry happy becouse I found this YT canal. Brilliant videos Sir, very helpfull for beginners. Keep it up, greatings from Bosnia 💗
Best explanation of how to set out and build a twisted pier without buying a pre made template - well done 👏
Hello from Canada! This is amazing, can’t wait to see your future videos! Keep up the great work 😃
Cheers buddy. I have a lot of technical and crazy builds planned. Glad to hear you enjoyed the beginning 👍🏻😁
Great to see you back on the brickwork! Really informative too, I've seen the ready made twist squares but never known how to set it out so just wanna say thanks!
Cheers buddy. I made this video because I couldnt find anything online explaining how to make a template. No worries pal, tha is for watching 👍🏻😁
@@RodianBuilds this may seem a daft question but when you divide the courses of bricks by say 180, will that mean the last course will be in the same square position as the first course?
Awesome, this is the easiest video on how to build a twisted pier, I’m gonna try it this week, I will send photos when I’m done, Tnk u Tnk u
Awesome video, I just learned something new . Thank you for sharing 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
From your centre on your template draw a circle showing the circle within the pier will twist then cut a segment of the circle drawn and place at bottom of pier as plump point to keep pier upright and within the twist x
Great video brother....ive been laying bricks...stones and blocks for a long time.....but have never built a twisted column.....i will definitely use some of your advice on how to tackle it on....thank you...💪👍😁✌
Excellent tutorial. Great work 👍🏽
Great video mate. You have a great way of explaining things
Cheers buddy, I try my best. 😁👍🏻
Great video! Plumbing is what I’ve always wondered! And frog down so there no need to worry😜
It's such a tricky aspect of the build. All good fun though. 🤔 Frog down....good thinking buddy 👍🏻😁
Top job mate, exactly the way I do them, love the videos 🤘👍👍
Cheers Billy 😁👍🏻
Cracking upload, Rodian. Really well explained and as you said, done with probably the most difficult kind of brick possible. Looks mint though! 👍
Cheers Jim 😁👍🏻 Definately a challenging brick but a fun challenge 🧱😁
it came out beautiful
a long time ago I seen this done with a sturdy piece of re-bar concreted or drilled in the concrete , plumbed both ways in the centre of the pier and a hole drilled in the timber square to allow you to slide it up the re-bar keeping the pier plumb as you go it works .
I've done it with rebar before and a piece of plastic down pipe....I wouldn't advice using pipe though 🤣🤣🤣
Love it !! Would like a video on creasing tiles maybe with the flaunching
Cheers Gary. I'll most probably add a creasing tile vid to the other series I'm starting. I'll add it into the garden wall viddy I'll be doing 👍🏻😁
Excellent craftsmanship sir! 👍
This has given me a idea 😊 thank you
Amazing job
Have only built these once as the decorative supports for a porch(not a big fan of them). I used a 4inch drainage pipe as the centre which also acts as the plumb point. Just needed to keep the bricks tight to the pipe on the inside. Had to make sure the last course finished parallel to the roof though. 👌👌
Measuring and working out the degree per course is a big part of building between 2 points. The pipe/string line through the middle is the only way I've found to get it plumb. A tricky build but good fun 👍🏻🤣
Going to have to nick some bricks from work and try this at home.. thankyou for the video
Lovely job Rodian, I envy your patience 👌🏼🧱👍🏼
Cheers buddy 👍🏻 I didnt find it too tedious to be honest....well, maybe the fading around with the templates is a bit of a test of patience. The build, however, was so much fun.
Rodian Builds 👌🏼🧱👍🏼
It's excellent the way u explaine Ur work in detail , keep up the good work mate, iv been laying bricks a good few years now and I'm still learning new things .. would love to see a buttress built .
I try to explain things as thoroughly as I can. In my opinion theres always new things to be learnt, learning every day 👍🏻😁 I had another request for a buttress and I'll deffo be making a video on them soon 🧱👍🏻
Do you take the template round clockwise on every corner
I love the look of these bricks! Like multi-colored, reclaimed, old & new, etc. I don’t care for bricks that are all new with one flat color across the board. I MUCH prefer the look of these, hands down.Too bad it’s not easy to find nice, old, reused off colored bricks.. well, it’s not easy for ‘me’ anyway. HA! I have to agree with you (just got to that part) I absolutely love these & def prefer the look of these over new bricks, any day. 🤗
Brilliant mate absolutely brilliant
Thanks Stuart 👍🏻🧱😁
Cant wait.
Rodian buddy you are another level 👍🏻
You and stu Crompton (who incidentally has a equally awesome youtube channel)
Well done mate
Stu crompton channel is no where near as good. This guy is a genuine guy and takes on all comments, even those that criticize and explains his point of view. Stu just blocks anyone that doesnt agree with him lol
Stu is a handy man not a bricklayer like this guy
Cheers Thomas, it's all about practise and a love for the trade 😁👍🏻
Mr Ctop93 I try to be as genuine and honest as I can and take all comments on board no matter how good or bad. Theres always a positive to take away from even the most harsh negative comment.
@@RodianBuilds and with that reply to my message, that is exactly why I like you and your channel. Have a good weekend👍
Great job brother. Would like to hear about coursing options other than. Just measuring.
Dzięki za jasne wytłumaczenie jak budować spiralne słupy. Wykorzystam tą metodę do budowy komina w swoim domu. Pozdrawiam z Polski
Very kewl thanks for the video
thats awesome bigcat,,,beautiful brick also
Love me a nice reclaim brick......even if the sizes are so different 🤣🤣
@@RodianBuilds yes sir,,,they look old
Awesome video, love the reclaims too! What tool did you use for jointing? Looked like a little bit of pipe but worked a treat 👌 All the best to you 💙
You're the man!
Love your videos. As a fellow content creator I appreciate the time you put into these. B-roll audio is quite a bit louder than the rest of your video on most of your videos. I find that a -30 dB is best when doing audio along with my voice and knock it down by at least -10 dB when using for b-roll (or check my volume and try to keep everything to -12 dB to keep things from peaking.)
Well done mate looks great...little tip so you don't have to mess around with the square piece of board a protractor and a bevel just make both your 90 degree guides like you did....work out your degree of twist like you did....then just use your speed square and mark 6 degrees off your speed square on to the top of your first guide...plant your second one on and fix it. In essence your speed square is a bevel and protractor all in one 👍 Hope that came across ok mate not nit picking dude love the vids and your work.
Cheers pal 👍🏻 Never heard of it being done that way, I'll deffo give it a try. I'm all for making a build easier, appreciate the comment 👍🏻😁
Good video, you can keep an eye on plumb. Take a look on rob songer the mans next level with fancy brickwork
im so glad you made a youtube channel lol theres other tutorials but one guy keeps replaying the same music in a 30 minute video lol and i told him to take the music off or change the music every time it ends and then he goes all mad about it lol
Glad you're enjoying the vids bud👍🏻😁 After asking everyone I have stopped adding music....seems as though everyone likes the sound of trowel on brick more 🤣👍🏻🧱
Where and how do you set out the first mark for the second course IE the exact measurement, brilliant skills.
Is the upstand line when your setting the 6 degrees, taken from the centre of the pier ?
Spot on mate if you draw a circle on the floor you can plum up off it but you did not need it
Interesting, next time I do one I'll give that a go. Cheers for the tip buddy 👍🏻😁
Greatings from Albania
That is real quality work 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 but most brickies only use a bevel gauge for stirring their tea so what’s going on with that??? 😂
Good job brother
From India
Best way to check is do another template at say 45degree (if you were doing a 90 degree twist ) half way then adjust accordingly just as a precaution
just measure one side of the template and divide it by 30. Then draw a line or a cross on the template exactly one increment away from the first corner and that will be your first turn as the corner lines up with your new course and the pencil line lines up with your previous course just keep going. You can also draw a circle on the floor or a template on the floor the exact circumference of the Pier and then the increments around and plumb up with the level. This method ensures you can keep a check on the rate of turn and that you're not going too fast or too slow so you ensure you finish exactly the right orientation
Get in lad
What size timber do you use thanks
If I were only going up 11 rows but I wanted the 11th row to be square with the bottom row I would have to do 180 degrees correct? If correct, that would be 11 degrees. Is that too severe of a twist for such a small pier?
Hey thanks, but can the twisted pier get building approval?
Not bad good skills mate
Super, loving the new format, keep up the good work
Cheers Paul, must admit I'm enjoying the new set up 👍🏻😁
Nice
The 30 course is constant or changable
i tell you what i had had a thought you want something that nodoys done a brick spiral staircase you go up how cool would that look
please watch my next video...in a couple of days...
Is there a way of to work out how start it with frist at angle so the last course finishes in line? So basically you have done 360 degree pier.
Trying to explain better so its square to the line!
Offcuts of 15mm copper pipe work as well ,a lot easier !
🤔 interesting. I'll give that a try next time. Cheers pal 👍🏻
Found it thanks
Looks smart that mate shame I never get asked to build them maybe one day 👍👍👍
Cheers Mark. I've only built 2 in the real world, the others I did were way back in the college days. 🤣👍🏻
you should make the twisted squares and sell them 😄 id buy 1 great videos 👏
Great job. What about a 3 centred arch not seen anyone put one on youtube yet.
Cheers Paul 👍🏻 I Havent done one of those since college....should be a good, fun challenge....I'll add it to the list 😁
Check out Rob Songer's channel for a video on a 3 centred arch.
@@Jim_Newlands I've seen him do a 4 centred arch can't find a 3
Couldn't you drill a hole in the centre of where you want the pillar and drop a length of rebar in to measure off .
If you don't have bricks how would you use concrete blocks, would you not have to cut the blocks down to the dimensions of bricks to give it that feature??
I guess you could lay 2 blocks down belly flat next to each other and get the same effect. Hope that helps 👍🏻😁🧱
So if the column is going to a height of 10' how would you work out the courses!??
10feet works out to be 3048mm now divide that by each 75mm course. That's comes out at 40.64 courses, basically we need to grind the courses down to make it fit to 10 feet exactly. This is where trial and error comes in. Let's try 76mm courses and see what happens. 3048 ÷ 76= 40.1 and some change. If you make each course 76mm you will fit it into the 10feet height. I hope this helps 😁👍🏻🧱
@@RodianBuilds thanks very much
@@RodianBuilds what is the height of the first floor in any given building, whether it is 3store or 4??
Rodian Builds you bumping rodian mate grinding would be 74mm a course lol 👍
To make life easier you can get some wood same depth as your bricks plus a joint for the template then you can pays bricks to the top edge a d no need to level them each time providing your first level is level and the bricks are all same thickness
I Wonder...why Not Just create the Templates by measzring the 6° offset , measure the distance fromncorner to Corner aß in brick thixkness plus mortar and start? I did Not really get the worden plate and Rotation Thing...? All U habe tontomisnstay square aß you build it, right?
Why don’t you do a herringbone panel
I do like a nice herringbone, I'll add it to the list 👍🏻😁
Rodian Builds or a Victorian weave pattern never had the chance to build one my self like to see some one do it step buy step 👍
Hi. I like to much this and im intresting to built one . Im intresting to learn how to build this.
My brother and I done this forty years ago,the pier was two and a half by two and a half bricks.Lay the first course then use your tape on the corners ie: 15mm 20mm25mm etc. Everything I see today proves that things have not been improved.
14:15 you used the B&Q Square to prove your wood form was Square and it turns out its way off
Less complicated. Use a circular piece of ply. Cut a square out of the middle of the circular piece of ply. the ply can then be marked to whatever degree you want. Place the circle of ply over the first course. lay you bricks and repeat. simples
Interesting🤔I may have to give that one a go👍🏻😁🧱
Where have the blocks gone ???
They have gone over to be turned into a garage. Might be able to do a series on the garage build, not sure yet 😁👍
Do you sell CD's with your Videos on them?
Every apprentice builds twisted piers
Underrated comment
I think it's a right of passage when you build one just before finishing at college 🤣👍🏻🧱
Rodian Builds what i meant is a apprentice can't build a straight pier
U no your stuff dude
Cheers buddy 😁👍🏻
Great video, really enjoyed it but the lighting was very bad!
Glad to hear you enjoyed the vid. I was struggling with exposure as the sun kept going behind the cloud and coming out just as I changed my exposure 🤦🏻♂️🤣
i can lay bricks and blocks ... so after watching all the videos if i get a job bricklaying and it goes well i am going to find a way to buy you a bottle of drink to say thanks ...lol .... lets see what happens
Really appreciate the thought buddy 😁👍🏻 Just glad to be helping you out. Good luck with he bricklaying job 👍🏻😁🧱
Bad @ss
Cheers bud
please
you are my master, please try to talk less PLEASE
Great video! Plumbing is what I’ve always wondered! And frog down so there no need to worry😜
Cheers Jamie. Its a shame there isn't an easier way to plumb a twisted pier, guess that would take the fun away then 🤣 I like the frog down idea 👍
Just thought, if the pier is built above say average head height, will have to go frog back up just before cause will see the frog from underneath haha
You think of everything! 😁👍🏻🤣
