I was stuck on the side of the road with a flat on a highway at 10:30pm. Took the lug nuts off and was very optimistic that I’d be getting home soon. The tire however was stuck. I came across this video, and after watching 30 seconds was told to kick it. I thought, no way would this work. One kick and that bad boy popped right off. Didn’t see the rest of the video, but Eric you made my day and got me home a lot sooner. Thanks!!!
@@calebkerr2308me too, happened to me an hour ago. I got a flat tire and proceeded to change it so I took out the scissors Jack and jacked up the Camry, took the lug nuts off but the damn tire was stuck
Thanks Eric! I had to resort to the last method of loosely applying the lug nuts and driving like a cautious maniac in an abandoned parking lot. Worked like a charm after about 5 minutes of doughnuts. Thanks again man you rock.
THANK YOU!!! We blew a tire after hitting a pothole today. We parked our car in a bank parking lot, just beneath a sign that read "Customers Only. All others will be towed. $185 minimum fee." We, of course, couldn't get the tire off. We can home, began looking for possible remedies online, and found THIS video. You just saved us $185. THANK YOU for making and posting this video!
Thanks for the insight, Eric. Your tips pointed me directly to my solution! I used a variation to fit my scenario - on one crappy standard 'under the seat' jack, on a snowy, mucky street, with very little clearance to swing or feel comfortable swinging under the lifted 1/4 of the car. Hopefully it helps someone out: While the car was up... 1. Removed all but one nut and left the remaining on loose (as Eric did.) 2. Utilizing a 12 pound kettle-bell, standing perpendicular to the tire, I swung the kettle-bell out about 45 degrees and bumped the TIRE ONLY directly lined up with the bolt. 3. I continued by rotating the tire by quarter turns while taking additional swings at the tire when the bolt lined up. At first I heard metal squeaks, and after 5 solid hits the tire popped! Nothing damaged, and car still standing solid. I would recommend only using this method when you are on a very flat, solid surface. Clean as much snow as you can from around the working area (it helps!). If it makes you nervous - call for roadside or a friend with gear. MPV
Wow! Thanks Eric. I've been trying for 2 days to get my aluminum wheel off my RV so I could change the brakes. Karate chops and rubber mallet whacks wouldn't work. I watched your video, went out with my sledge hammer, followed your instructions and voila, success. You are definitely "The Man." Thank you once again. You are the smartest car guy I've never met.
Spent a whole hour trying to get my tire off. Watched this video and one minute later it was off!! Thank you so much for sharing this info to us all!!!
Excellent video! My tire was completely stuck and the hammer trick didn’t bud it. Then I did your tire turn method and it worked like a charm! I didn’t even have to drive around I just turned the wheel back and fourth! Thank you for this video extremely helpful!
I love you Eric. 1990 Mercury Grand Marquis, wheels "aluminum on steel" just like you said. After an hour with a rubber mallet and my boot heels your video was like wisdom from heaven . . . my old camping log splitter axe worked like a charm (hammer end, though 10 minutes earlier I'd've loved to use the blade end). Even on jack stands and lying on the ground a firm horizontal hit to the tire popped it like the cork from a nice barleywine. I'm goin' to have a beer right now!
Thank you so much for this video! I have been changing my own tires for 10 years and I've never had this problem. I didn't have a sledge hammer, but 4 or 5 good hits with a regular hammer did the trick! And all 4 of my wheels were stuck so I got lots of practice. Thanks again for your videos.
One thing to try before driving is to having the lug nuts loose and lowering the car as fast as safely possible. The shock of lowering the car broke free 2 out of 3 tires.
I ran into this situation over the weekend. What worked for me was spraying some wd-40 on any place the rim contacted the lugs and/or brake rotor. Let it sit for a minute and gently tapped around the rim with a dead blow hammer. Didn't damage the wheel and the thing popped right off. Made sure to hit my rotors with some brake cleaner afterwards just to be safe. I love these videos, they've made me so much more confident when working on my car.
Thanks for this video mate! Spent an hour trying to get it off, after 3 minutes following your instructions the wheel was off. You are a legend! One more subscriber now. Thanks again!
Thank you! I’ve kicked it, let wd40 sit in for 30 min, hit the wheel on the outside, and driven the car with lightly loosened lug nuts, and to no avail. I never thought about hitting the inner side of the wheel.... I guess a combo of the wd40 and the sledgehammer, it worked well. I had to hit it a few times, but it worked!!!!! Salted road in upstate New York is not forgiving, but thanks for the tip!!!! Cheers

Just thought I'd let you know that I was stuck in the cold with a flat tire that wouldn't come off today. I googled your video in the field and successfully remove the tire with the karate kick. Thanks Eric!
Eric: I have a job interview in a few hours, but couldn't get the wheel off to put the donut on. Karate kicking didn't work, lol, so I used a hammer to knock it loose from underneath. After about 15 hits, it finally loosened. I put the donut on and now I'm good to go. Thank you so much for this video! God bless!
Thanks Eric, worked a treat. I spent ages trying to kick the wheel off my BMW and it simply would not shift. but the hammer job worked perfectly. Thanks again Eric

Thank you so much! We are freezing in Indiana helping change my sons tire and couldn’t get this crazy tire off!!! My husband knows a lot about cars but I was able to watch this video and help! We are subscribers now! Thanks again!
Should go without saying I guess but kicking the tire while under the car should be done with the car supported securely with stands since it has the best chance of toppling when doing that maneuver. Hammer less so.
Eric you are life saver. I have never had this happen in 10 years rotating my own tires and its on a vehicle i just acquired and know nothing about. I used a small version of sledge (3rd biggest hammer I tried) Grabbing the 10lb sledge now that i know its not some hub failure or such thing i could damage worse. Thank you for giving us all this video 11 years ago!!
Wowwwwwwwwwwww thx bro . I have been battling this truck tire on my sequoia and I got frustrated and decided to check RUclips for a ny suggestions. Thank God your video popped up . I just used your technique and just like that the wheel came off. You are a life saver. I am subscribing to your channel right now!!!!!
I had a rim that was really stuck on my truck and tried everything in the video including tip at the end of the video but too avail. My friend came over and took a inflated tire and stood 3 feet from the bastard tire and hurled it like a disk with all his might at the offending tire and the tire popped off after 2 tries. Just another way of getting it unstuck
Yea this works. Tried the drive, didn't work. Finally had it with that pain in the ass. Took my 3 foot distance and whooped that tires ass with the other one and it popped right off
Nailed it! I tried everything for about 45 minutes. Because I only had the car up on a tiny scissor jack that was very unstable I couldn’t apply to much pressure with my foot or a hammer. I Hand tightened the lugs drop the car down backed it up and made a couple swift turns the wheel and heard it pop free. Thank you so much seriously save the night. Very grateful for your help
Your tip of loosening the lugs a little and driving the car to loosen the wheel just saved me on the freeway. I tried everything. It was stuck. Put the lugs back on, loosely, and backed up a foot. Popped right off. Thanks for the tip.
Had to use the sledge hammer trick on one wheel, then the short drive plus hammer on a second. This video saved me $50 in garage fees so far. Thanks Eric!
Many people think that the wheel sticks to the mount because of the screws and that the wheel is actually riding on them. That is not the case. The screws push the wheel on the surface of the mount and friction is stopping it from moving sideways when the car is driving. The same happens when you push your hand on a surface like a table. The harder you push the stronger the friction force becomes that keeps your hand in place. I am just thinking of this because I don't know how smart it is, if you drive around with loose nuts on the wheel, even if it is for just a few seconds/minutes. I have no experience with it but I could imagine that the screws could bend from the pressure.
+pcfreak1992 You can evaluate your theory by going empiric and ask any experienced mechanic about it. For the more scientific approach, calculate the structural safety factor for this situation. Both will tell you that it is actually very smart, because applied carefully it does the job without any harm. Trust me, I`m an engineer. And former mechanic :D
+computername just because nothing happens means it's a smart idea? I actually got this fact from a real engineer who does this kind of stuff for a living. But I mean think of it, if the nuts are loose what should hold the wheel? Exactly, it's the nuts themselves. And when the nuts are tight, the wheel's surface first has to overcome the friction being put on it by the nuts before the wheel will even touch the nuts' threads.
Thats what I meant with "applied carefully". Of course you wouldn`t loosen them completely and do the crazy road rage. You just loosen them slightly to get the initial movement for a stubborn wheel. The wheel itself is still centered on the hub by the central hole so the bolts will only have to withstand any torque, but when you don`t brake or accelerate stupidly, they come out with no damage at all. Yes, you touch the threads and yes, the method is debatable and you can end up with serious damage, but when you do it smooth, it works like a charm. And yes - because nothing happens it`s a smart idea. Thats common sense for me so far.
I did that in a teenager without inspecting the spare first, and a stray ridge on the rim shredded my finger when it kicked back. Be careful when you improvise things as hammers :)
as a second note, MAKE SURE that the car is in place with jackstands and jack and wheel blocks. You DO NOT want to kangaroo kick it, only to die as a crushed Kangaroo. ( Kangaroo kicks are super powerful).
Thank you very much. Before watching your video, I tried everything to get wheel off my Silverado. The trick that worked for me was taking it for a drive with loose lug nuts. It worked as you recommended. I’m now subscribed to your channel.
this was awesome beyond words. if we still have cars in 90 years, this video will still be useful when it reaches 100 years old. you rock for all of your work.
Took it for a spin. Heard it pop, and drove back VERY SLOWLY. I probably could have screwed them a little tighter. No sledge hammer, and it worked! Thanks a million!
Mine was well and truly stuck on the hub, tried everything last week, kicking, pulling, even using the spare tyre to knock it, nothing. I didn't want to take too much a risk as I only had a scissor jack. This weekend tried Eric's tip of loosening the lugs a little and driving a little, SNAP! I heard the wheel break loose, such a satisfying sound! Parked car, jacked it, and loosened wheel lugs and the tyre came off a treat.
I’ve been hammering away at the tires exhausted in the cold with no hope even damaging the rims and possibly other components and I tried the 1 lug nut trick and it popped right open in 5 minutes ! Thanks for the awesome video
Bro i tried everything! and it didn't work. Then i saw your last part of the video with driving it in a parking lot with the lug nuts loose. Worked right away. You saved me so much money and a scary un inspected car ride to the garage. T.Y CAR GUY!!!
I'm so glad I found your video so quickly! I changed my brakes and rotors yesterday and was convinced someone welded my wheel to the hub. One lug nut and a whack with a rubber mallet did the trick. Thanks so much!
This video was a godsend! I did a karate kick to the inside of the tire while bracing onto the frame/hooks/bumper and was able to break the tire free from the hub with just one kick. I used this method on all 4 tires and it worked like a charm. Don't forget to use one lug nut to prevent wheel from falling off when you kick it free. I'm glad I watched the entire video to get your preferred method of removal. Thanks for the amazing video!
Thank you so much for the tip. My son and I just watched this video and since we don't have a hammer we used an axe, obviously the back side of it. One small hit and the tire came loose real easy. Thank you again from Mesa Arizona
Dude you just saved my butt. Going up to the ski hill tomorrow, just spent past hour trying to get the tire off...smacking it from behind worked. Stay gold pony boy
Great tips. The hammer knock from inside saved my day. After having a flat tire at 5am we got a stuck wheel. Big Prado wheel. We tried everything. 100 kicks, w40, break fluid, heat, hammer... after an hour I just checked youtube and your tips. The hammer from inside looked promising but i didnt have a big one so we used a shovel and bang the wheel got loose.
Thank you so much for the help :) I must confess though, I tried the driving around thing and did'nt feel comfortable getting to far away from my jack, etc. I just drove real fast ( in a straight line) back and forth and hit the brakes HARD. It took about 3 or 4 back and forths, but I got it. What a freaking job that was...but now I know, and now the kids know in stead of coming home for Mommy to fix it. Where are all the good men??? Thanx again :)
Thanks brother! A friend and i tried to get the wheel off for almost an hour! We used your method of putting the lug nuts back on and driving around! Presto! You da man!
Loose lug nut trick worked for me on a 93 ram 1500 153k, pretty clean, but rust on hub around that sticks out of rim, and some seafoam penatrant. So Thanks Erick the Car Guy, now I can replace the caliper more easily. The hardest part is behind me.
Thanks for this video. Nothing worked except for hand tightening the lug nuts and driving it around a little. When I jacked the car back up, the tire came off like butter. Thanks again.
Thanks for the info. I have been doing my own brake work since I was 16. I have never had wheels that I couldn't kick or pound off, until today. I worked for 2 hours with no luck. I used your drive with loose lugs method. Fortunately my driveway is slightly higher than my yard. I drove each tire just off the edge of the driveway and steered back and forth. When I lifted the truck, the wheels pulled off easily. THANK YOU
I've been trying to get my wheel off for days. All other videos just talk about using expensive tools and products. Now just from watching this nice and short but informative video my wheel is off. Thanks!!!
I to had to use the last method the owner of the car had drove till it blew out so I had no tire to hit if that didn't work I was going to try n hit the rim with a rubber mallet to see if it'd knock it lose But fortunately enough it came right off. I didn't do doughnus or anything wild like that I just backed out driverless then 45 seconds turned around and pulled back in lifted and sure enough it was lose, backed off the luggs rim came right off THANKS I've used your videos on a few cars now your great at what you do brother keep it up!!!!
Thanks for making this! Had a flat out in 5° weather and wheel wouldn't come loose. After much struggling, using the tire iron as a hammer, and wearing myself out trying to pry it loose; I looked up your video, gave it a few good mule kicks and the wheel came loose.
THANK YOU! I was entertained AND it was good information! Changed my first tire yesterday with your help AND the tire was stuck! Had to take the splitting mall to it but the tire came off and no one or no thing were injured in the process!
Thx!!! The hammer tip worked like a charm on my stuck tire! Got 'er to the shop and flat was repaired in a trice. I never had an older brother, but if I did I'd want one like you. Thanks for the helpful videos and sense of humor. Karate kick didn't work, as my driving mocs kept falling off, LOL. I did get the too-tight lugs off first (finally) by standing on the tire iron with one foot and carefully bouncing a few times while holding onto the edge of the hood. Nothing broke, but ya gotta do what ya gotta do without any manly gentlemen on the scene. ; ) Stay awesome!
Just wanted to say thanks I know this is an old video. Today had the same issue and recalled your vid from memory. Dropped the car with the slightly loose bolts. Worked like a charm sucked that I had to do the same job for 3 tires. Glad I did not have a flat and needed to use the spare on the highway. Just to cover my butt I used break grease around the hub and mounting points. Then torqued the lug nuts to spec. Many thanks Eric
Thanks Eric. Got the first side off by hitting a wooden block with a big hammer around the perimeter of the exterior side of the wheel to rock it back and forth until it loosened up, but I like the sledge on the back of the tire trick way better. Used your method on the other wheel. Took a few good smacks but it worked. I have watched a ton of your videos just for fun, but this time was the one that counted for me.
Awesome advice, as usual...had never come across a rim that would not come off...tugged it and kicked it, wouldn't budge...then I checked Eric's video, grabbed a sledge and bingo! Popped right off!
Thanks alot. Tried kicking it but didn’t come off. I’m sure that got it started but it didn’t completely remove. So then I put the lugs on by hand, didn’t tighten all the way like you said. Lowered the car and repeatedly reversed back and forth in the driveway. Jacked it up again and it came off like a charm. Thank goodness for the Internet and helpful people
I used the sledge on the outside of the rim, I soaked the wheel contact point with wd40, I used a torch to heat up the contact point, I tried to yank off the wheel with a ratchet strap and my truck......... sledge on the tire worked instantly. Despite feeling emasculated, got the wheel off to plug the tire. Thanks for the video.
Thank you Eric for advise on removing a stuck tire as a woman I gave you helpful tip to my nephew and brother who were struggling and along like sis and told them them what you shared and wal-la they bother look at me with astonished expression when the tire came off..
My friend had a flat today at work. We tried and tried to pull the wheel off without success. Saw this and 💥 BAM💥 Two hits from the back with a hammer and it was off! Thank you so much!
I think this is THE first video of yours that I watched, and worked for me, much appreciated! One mod I do: First off, raise the rim just enough to clear the slab, say within a finger thickness. This makes it easier on your back, and with heavier truck tires you can employ a pry bar to lift the wheel up and on. Then, instead of hitting the sledge hammer directly against the inside sidewall, stand some timber blocking on the slab snug against the inside sidewall, and slide the sledge hammer through an arc into that. Works a charm, thanks again!

My friend came over and took a inflated tire and stood 3 feet from the bastard tire and hurled it like a disk with all his might at the offending tire and the tire popped off after 2 tries. Just another way of getting it unstuck
Hold my RedBull.
You can have the rest, I only had one sip. I love it when ''just throw a rock at it'' actually works! Thank you.
Yea this works. Tried the drive, didn't work. Finally had it with that pain in the ass. Took my 3 foot distance and whooped that tires ass with the other one and it popped right off
Thanks!
Tried the hammer first to no avail and saw this comment and said why not. Worked like a charm. Thanks!!
Idk but I have the same problem with my jeep. Come to find out.. the center hole is too small and it somehow made itself 1 with the axel.
You saved a dad with two kids this morning who was terribly late (my neighbor)
Your tip of loosening the lugs a little and driving the car to loosen the wheel just saved me on the freeway. I tried everything. It was stuck. Put the lugs back on, loosely, and backed up a foot. Popped right off. Thanks for the tip.
My tires shredded on the highway, I have no rubber to drive on, or hit with a hammer....shit out of luck?
Thank you Eric! I was about to give up and run flat to get to a tire shop. That sledge hammer technique saved me from a lot of troubles.
Chuck Norris Kicked my tire and it exploded into the rings of Saturn
He Still owes me $200 for a new tire
VexingCode NBS to
Good thing he never fucked your tire or by now it would have the diameter of the rings of Saturn...
"Fuck" Norris?
200 a tire you need a new tire shop my guy
You owe HIM 200
@@johnaranjo6354 That’s the average price for a tire on a decent car or truck these days. 1 tire for my 2019 Chevy Colorado is $200 at the cheapest.
My husband came in and asked me to look up how to get the tire off. I told him what you said to do, and it worked. Thank you!
so i didnt have the kung fu skills or a hammer big enough. so in a moment of rage i used the spare to bash it off :)
ryan p haha, I'm going to try that
I tried that too...couldn't get it to work, but good to know for the future -- because I don't travel with a sledge in the Jeep!
I did that in a teenager without inspecting the spare first, and a stray ridge on the rim shredded my finger when it kicked back. Be careful when you improvise things as hammers :)
Thanks Eric! Problem solved with the sledge hammer. A little PB Blaster before the hammer may have helped too.
just get under the car and kangaroo kick it brah . lolz
Ll Lock dude that shit worked for me, your a fucken GOD brah😘
Ll Lock dude that shit worked for me, your a fucken GOD brah😘
as a second note, MAKE SURE that the car is in place with jackstands and jack and wheel blocks. You DO NOT want to kangaroo kick it, only to die as a crushed Kangaroo. ( Kangaroo kicks are super powerful).
Lol.glad to know brah.
Thank you very much. Before watching your video, I tried everything to get wheel off my Silverado. The trick that worked for me was taking it for a drive with loose lug nuts. It worked as you recommended. I’m now subscribed to your channel.
But what if the tire is flat
Brad you'll need a new alternator
My tyre was flat too. Hitting the rim did it.
rubber mallet on the wheel loosened mine up when my tire was flat.
Mine was flat too... A few swings hitting the tire from the back worked out for me, I choose to use a sledge hammer
Just put the spare on. That'll get the stuck wheel off.
this was awesome beyond words. if we still have cars in 90 years, this video will still be useful when it reaches 100 years old. you rock for all of your work.
Took it for a spin. Heard it pop, and drove back VERY SLOWLY. I probably could have screwed them a little tighter. No sledge hammer, and it worked! Thanks a million!
Thank you from a middle aged female! Worked like a charm driving back and forth in my long driveway. Got them all loose and I did it all by myself.
Totally worked! Thanks, Eric!
Same story here! Ten years later and this video just saved my buns! Thank you. 🥰🥰🥰
Eric, I’ve been subbed for a few years now. You always end up helping when I need you. Worked like a freaking charm. Thanks as always!!
U have quite the personality. That's what makes your show so fun to watch
You can always tell a smart man; they have a sense of humor. Eric has a boatload of it.
Loosening the bolts and driving for a minute worked. Thank you for helping out with this headache.
Just had a wheel stuck on at the roadside. Loosening the bolts a bit and turning full-lock in either direction freed it off. Great video!
Thanks!!!
Changing tires and 3 of them got stuck. Sledge hammer worked after 3 tries! Thank you so much!
You just saved my day man. I tried inserting the screw and hammering with a thin metal rod I had and voila it worked wonders!
How did it take me this many years to learn this? Thank you so much!!!
Wrestled for 1/2. Looked to you for solution. One Karate kick later, I'm back in business. You da man!
I had two wheels stuck badly I left the bolts loose as Eric said and drove the car on some bumps and weaves and thanks to Eric it worked.
Thank goodness for the Internet and helpful people
Thanks a lot! This trick helped me out this morning and I didn’t have to search through a 35 minute video about nothing like some others post
Thanks Eric, new truck and wanted to rotate the tires, one shot from the sledgehammer as you demonstrated, solved my problem.
My friend had a flat today at work. We tried and tried to pull the wheel off without success. Saw this and
💥 BAM💥 Two hits from the back with a hammer and it was off! Thank you so much!
I think this is THE first video of yours that I watched, and worked for me, much appreciated! One mod I do:
First off, raise the rim just enough to clear the slab, say within a finger thickness.
