Today, we will discuss weight regain after bariatric surgery or balloon procedures. You might have heard that these procedures, whether it's bariatric surgery or balloon treatment, help with weight loss. However, there's a tendency to regain weight afterward, even if you lose weight through dieting or physical activity. Why does this happen, and how can we prevent it? That's what we'll talk about today.
Obesity is a chronic disease, similar to diabetes or high blood pressure. Just as these illnesses stay with you throughout your life, obesity also becomes a part of you. If you lose weight for any reason, always remember that this weight can come back. In sleeve gastrectomy surgery, the size of the stomach is reduced. However, over time, patients' food intake increases. If patients do not remember that their stomach size is smaller and that their body's requirement for food is less, they might start eating more than necessary. This mindset is crucial. If they forget this and start increasing their food quantity or make poor food choices, such as consuming more sweets or oily food instead of high-protein food, the extra calories can lead to weight regain.
After surgery, a diet plan is provided, but if patients do not follow it over time, it becomes a significant reason for weight regain. The initial enthusiasm for diet and exercise tends to fade, and patients might forget that obesity is a chronic disease. As they lose discipline, the tendency to regain weight increases.
There is a difference between the body of someone who has never gained much weight and the body of an obese patient who has lost weight through surgery or other methods. Patients must remember this. High alcohol intake is another significant reason for weight regain, as alcohol is a high-energy drink. If patients do not take their supplements properly, this can also lead to weight regain. Additionally, inadequate fluid intake can contribute to weight regain.
In other procedures like malabsorptive procedures, such as mini gastric bypass, the first part of the intestine is bypassed. Over time, the next part of the intestine starts working more and absorbing food properly, which can stop weight loss. If patients are not mindful of their food choices or increase their food quantity, this intestine can absorb more food, leading to weight regain.
The same principles apply to sleeve gastrectomy: maintain good food choices, follow a high-protein diet, reduce carbs and oils, stay active, take supplements, and ensure proper fluid intake. This helps in reducing weight regain and maintaining a healthy weight. These principles also apply to balloon procedures, which can last from five months to a year. Even after the balloon is removed, if patients do not continue with their new lifestyle, weight regain can occur.
Apart from these simple conditions, technical failures can happen in surgery, causing weight regain in some patients. If you believe your life is well-disciplined and you haven't done anything to cause weight regain, but it is happening inexplicably, consult your doctor for an evaluation. There might be a technical error or a new issue in your body causing the weight gain. By seeking advice from your doctor and getting tests done, you can determine why weight regain is happening. Before gaining too much weight, evaluate it and start moving towards your normal weight again.
We hope this video has provided you with insights into weight regain. If you are experiencing this issue, this video will definitely be helpful.
