I have to agree. Captain America 2 took the main characters story and the mcu to a whole new level. It was great to see Steve Rogers continue to learn to adapt himself into the modern era. The action in this movie was also top notch.
I think this movie has the best of Natasha Romanoff, Nick Fury, and Steve Rogers across the entire MCU. And the way that this movie sets up ideas and carries them through the entire duration is great; Nat trying to set Steve up for a date, Fury and Pierce’s mission history, “what is Sitwell doing on a satellite ship,” etc.
This is a trend I'm glad to see we're in the early stages of leaving behind. Creatives have begun to realize that characters can be earnest and kind while still being capable and engaging. There are other ways to show intelligence beside snark, quips, and sass. I think My Adventures With Superman was what really made me hopeful we had turned a corner away from the irreverent heroes of the last decade.
While still having that character be willing to back up their honor and morality with the ability to fight for their ideals. Steve is repeatedly tested physically and morally, and in the best of situations his moral sensibilities allow him to inspire and lead others. However, they also allow him to be flawed, his rigid values occasionally veering into stubbornness and (at least in the first Avengers film), sanctimony, which can contribute towards his failures, especially when working with others that aren’t as rigid as him. But his grief over his all that he has sacrificed, his desire to keep Bucky in his life, is his greatest vulnerability, the thing that compels him to act selfishly and forget his “mission”, showing that despite all his virtues, he is still a mortal man deep down.

hey ya don't gotta tell me brother, I have always had exactly the same pick for "most underrated MCU movie", and that pick is FIRST AVENGER. It's only the most "inferior" of the Cap trilogy by way of the second two simply being that friggin good. It's like trying to compare BTTF 1 and 2. (edit) in fact now I think about it, it feels like a very similar example to me of THE WOLVERINE and LOGAN. Because I'd probably say THE WOLVERINE is the most underrated of all Fox X-Men flicks, and I think automatically gets looked upon less because the stone cold classic LOGAN is.
I agree! I adore First Avenger and its focus on properly developing Steve and showcasing his personality. Since Captain America started as propaganda, the first issue of his comics have nothing in the way of backstory for him. First Avenger, however, gives great insight into who Steve is and why you should care. Not to mention I love that they made the movie into sort of a period piece too, which stands out in contrast to the other MCU movies (kind of in a way that Winter Soldier stands out as a bit of a spy thriller). It’s definitely an extremely underrated movie.
First cap reminds me of Batman Begins. I think the first half of the film was absolutely brilliant for an origin story. I think the second half was a bit clunky, particularly with a pretty generic “evil” villain that wasn’t that captivating. The second and third Caps are awesome and helped by the fact that at various times you had wonderful antagonists: Bucky, Zemo, Tony and even T’Challa for a certain part.
The Winter Soldier is the movie that solidified Steve Rogers as probably my favorite MCU character. It's far and away the best MCU movie, and Chris Evans is (obviously) no small part of that.
The Winter Soldier is still my #1 favourite movie in all the mcu to this day! Even though Tony Stark is my favourite Avenger, the quality of Winter Soldier was just…thrilling, real, grey, realistically comical, even politically scary at times! Also that elevator fight scene was the most creative setting for a fight and the execution was just god-tier!!

It’s not, the action in this film is brilliant, if you want overly choppy editing, watch anything by Paul W.S. people on twitter have nothing better to do than to make up shit to be mad about. captws is nearly the perfect superhero movie and the only thing that lets it down is making everything hydra's fault at the last minute. hydra can still be involved but i think it's a huge cop out to remove all the government surveillence stuff in favour of don't worry it was just the nazis we don't need to have themes. everything else is literally perfect. the action is still some of the best i've ever seen. that first bucky/steve fight where steve loses his shield still hits it's completely perfect. i genuinely think this movie has the best fight choreography of any mcu movie.
@@lazaroskarmaniolas7410 yeah but to be fair, for that matter you could say "your problem is taking what RUclips users say seriously", that would be just as valid. You're gonna get your share of poor and/or bad faith arguments for comic book stuff (or really movies in general) across any social media, I'm honestly not sure that twitter is necessarily better or worse in that regard (those being VERY relative terms in this case lol). I'm not all surprised by the OP's observations, not even just by way of the time on the calendar, but it feels like there's been a certain level of backlash to the Russos in general now the last couple years. And I'm not even sure it's all that unfairly, between both the quality of all of their non-MCU output so far, and some of their opinions on film in general, AI, and other emerging technologies. I've loved them since Arrested Development but I have wondered if it's been a case of them loving the smell of their own farts, so to speak lol
The fact that this year we're as far away from Endgame as Endgame was from The Winter Soldier when it came out, genuinely blows my mind, and makes me a bit sad.
Really shows how far the MCU has fallen from grace. In the time period between Winter Soldier and Endgame they were putting out consistent bangers every year that all interlinked to serve the overall infinity narrative. In the time period between Endgame and now, we've gotten maybe 3 gems sprinkled in amongst a flood of truly awful mass produced drivel that has no overall cohesion or direction. I'm hopeful for Deadpool 3 but I think it's probably just time to let the superhero genre die
@@muffinman3052I was all aboard to see the superhero genre die, but then I saw The Batman and had my mind changed. Also dying to see how spiderverse ends. The thing about the MCU is they still have proven they can do some good stuff. I thought Loki, Wakanda Forever, and No Way Home were so much fun. The problem was they just produced too much crap. Dr. strange and Thor 4 were the biggest letdowns I’ve experienced in a while in the MCU.
@@thatstheway2429 Don't forget Ant-Man 3. That one was terrible too, but nothing tops Thor 4. That might have been the worst movie I've watched in decades. I couldn't even get through it first time.
I also love how this movie connects to the storyline of Agents of SHIELD. That show makes this movie feel all the more relevant, important and like its part of a bigger world.
Gosh, I still get goosebumps whenever cap asks if anyone wants to leave the elevator before they begin. and the callback in infinity war where he gets out of the situation tactically instead of through force. so cool!
When I saw the first Cap America movie, I thought it was good - but that's about it. So when I headed into the theatre to watch this, I didn't have much expectations. I think that's the biggest reason why I was completely blown away by it:it definitely is Marvel's Dark Knight
Really hoping they can capture the awesome action scenes the winter soldier had in brave new world. Those Cap movies really were the backbone for the MCU in its first 3 phases
@FullFatVideos I'm glad I'm reading people say this! I love Sam's character but they're going to have to pull it out the bag to stop him feeling underpowered and underwhelming without the serum
Lemme get that GotG video. The Guardians comics during the DNA run were some of my favorite superhero comics and i lost my mind when they were announced all those years ago. The fact that people know who those characters are now and actually like them still makes me extremely happy cuz they were pretty niche back then.
I watched the film twice yesterday, listened to the soundtrack, even watched the trailers took me back like it was yesterday when i first watched it on the big screen for the first time...Still a masterpiece a decade later.
It's depressing to see just how far the MCU has fallen. Back when Winter Soldier came out, you'd be hard pressed to find anyone that wasn't 100% on board with the MCU and actively excited and theorizing about where everything would go next. That excitement is now all but completely gone. Sad. Makes me miss the days of The Winter Soldier.
God I miss the old MCU, the connection everyone had with the characters and the way the audience was a hundred percent invested in their stories. It was a good time.
16:00 I’m so happy you addressed the Golden Age/Nostalgia issue fandoms have these days. A lot of these stories are good and memorable because they were new and fresh ideas during their time. I’m excited for Brave New World because I want to see where the characters and story go, not because I want Winter Soldier 2.0
it's annoying cause they used Captain America franchise for Civil War. Like the trilogy of Cap 1-3 doesn't even make sense, it's really not a trilogy. At least, that #3 does not fit in the most.
Yes, I mean if they say it's an avengers movie, I'd say it's great. But it's not. The title is Captain America Civil War, and somehow, the movie didn't mainly focus on steve(at least that's what I felt when Iwaswatching). That's a bit disappointing.
2014 is the year the MCU went from a pretty good franchise to an unstoppable juggernaut. It secured good faith for the entirety of the Infinity Saga, ensuring everyone would allow Marvel to cook. That's how good The Winter Soldier and Guardians of the Galaxy are.
No matter where i go, what i do or what i become, i can always rely on you to make an amazing video about winter soldier which i will always thoroughly enjoy. It was your first cap video that got me to subscribe to you all those years ago. I'm glad to have been on this mcu ride with you, through the good and the bad. Though i cant support you financially there is not a day that goes bye that I wont be rooting and cheering for you. I'm with you to the end of the line. 😁
In general I consider 2014 to be one of the best years for modern movies with 2 all time great MCU movies, Interstellar, Godzilla, X-Men, Edge of Tomorrow, John Wick, The Lego Movie and many more. It could just be nostalgia but honestly I still watch many of these movies regularly and think they are better than a lot of stuff today. If anyone is not interested in the movies coming out right now go do a watch party of movies from 2014 you won’t be disappointed.
Best part of this movie is the "on your left" line when cap is out running sam. That being the call back line when all the heros stepped out of the portals in endgame is the best callback ever.
The fight sequence just before Bucky’s mask came off was just perfection, I go back to watch that regularly! Also shout out to George St-Pierre for getting a badass fight sequence in Captain America whilst being the best fighter in the world at the time in real life!
2:30 Ahh the non initiated not knowing that 616 Cap Would actually Dogwalk his Edgy Ultimate Version and Way More People from different verses then most think but Yes, THANK GOD he didin't have his Ultimate Verse Personality, but there was No Way The Russos or even Whedon were ever going to make a Mistake Like THAT.
One of the things I love about this movie is the time it was released and the perception of the character at that time. Before "The First Avenger" I was not such a fan of Cap (16 yo at the time) mostly out of ignorance, I was more into Deadpool. I started to read Cap's comics and got a better idea of him. In "The Avengers" everyone loved Stark and his snarky lines, while Steve, as Honest Trailers puts it, was "nobody's favorite Avenger", but he was my favorite already. I knew that Cap had more to offer, that he wasn't just a stiff, boring self-righteous dude throwing around a shield. CA:TWS arrived. And boy did Cap shut some mouths. It gave me so much pleasure to see the character in all of his glory. It was what I always knew it could be. Honest Trailers said at the end of their TWS video "He's Cool now". He always was, you just didn't know that.
CA-2 Winter Soilder was definitely one of the best from the mcu no doubt , his solos period were all great despite the 3rd movie was basically a Avengers team-up movie
The fact that we also got a direct follow-up to the events of this movie and changed the entire tone of a TV show forever and made it one of if not the best comicbook TV show ever is why Cap 2 is my favorite MCU movie
I'm not a MCU hater at all. Hell, I loved literally everything MCU put out till Endgame. But the movie that I've went back to re-watch multiple times has only been this one! Captain America: The Winter Soldier! Crisp action, gripping story plus Cap'n is just kicking some straight ass man! Love it!
Captain America: The Winter Soldier is still the best solo movie since Iron Man. And nothing else since has been able to keep me on the edge of my seat in the MCU.
This is in my top 5 mcu movies. Everything from the writing, character arcs and action was perfect, and its criminal we have never had choreography on the same level since
A 19 minute video about CA:TWS with 2 minutes spent on Bucky? I'm honestly impressed. He's a big reason why I like this film, so it was actually nice seeing you talk about other parts that are usually not focused on so much, like Natasha, Fury and Pierce. This film is my favourite in the MCU and I always rewatch it whenever I feel down. Thanks for this video.
Winter soldier is personally my favorite MCU movie. The whole movie, from start to finish, is fantastic. The opening when they are raiding the ship is one of the greatest MCU scenes IMo.
Winter soldier is EVEN better if you watch it alongside Agents of Shield, showing the Shield/Hydra collapse from a different perspective, making the world feel broader
Ive been saying ever since its release that this is by far the best of all the marvel movies. Your original video covering it is how I first discovered you and your content. I respected your like minded opinions of it so much Ive watched all your content past and present now. Love it all man, keep it up!
I also don't think people understand the significance of cap lifting Thor's hammer, the level of honor one must achieve in order to lift the hammer is literally a level of honor that was set by a god and the king of Asgard, just that phrase alone......"he who so ever wields this hammer...if he be worthy...shall possess the power of Thor" says everything
The scene in the lift lives in my head rent-free. How he uses it to his advantage in Endgame by saying 'Hail Hydra' gives me goosebumps every time. And it's so novel to see Cap and Nat bond as close friends, love the small quirky jokes in-between, every now and then.
My dad despises superhero films, but when he saw this film, he said it didn’t feel like a superhero film, which is why he enjoyed it. It’s my favourite MCU film because it’s more grounded for an MCU film (I haven’t seen it in a while, so I might be misremembering it 😅)
I loved what came before movies like Iron Man, Avengers, but The Winter Soldier is where everything changed. That film took the MCU to another level. Boy, how things have changed.
It’s insane that it’s been 10 years… I actually started my MCU journey with Guardians, so I just missed this one in theaters. I then went back and started from the beginning. This movie is definitely my favorite from the MCU for a multitude of reasons, but especially because it literally made me fall in love with Cap. I literally disliked First Avenger the first time I watched it. Now Cap is my favourite character of all time, and all thanks to this movie. Of course, I now love First Avenger too, but it’s crazy for me to think that I might not have, were Winter Soldier any different. Anyway, great video!!
Great video!! MCU at it's best!! I still look forward to great things from the franchise but this movie will always be a highlight. Thank you for a great, positive piece!
watching catws back in the day alongside agents of shield had me buzzing out of my skin with excitement. this is still hands down the best mcu film imo. part of it, i think, is that none of the characters feel like theyre forced into being funny or snarky for no reason
Excellent video! This film still stands out as being top tier MCU even 10 years later so its always good to see it get the praise it thoroughly deserves, this film has aged like a fine wine Please do the GOTG video for August as well! I would love to see your thoughts on that film and the completed Guardians Saga
Totally agree, 2014 is my favorite year, not just for the MCU but movies in general. I remember when Winter Soldier came out, I watched it with a friend and it was so good I told him he van go home first as I watched it a second time that night. Besides Winter Soldier and GotG though, notable movies I remember from then are Days of Futures Past and Edge of Tomorrow, The Lego Movie and Kingsman.
I always compared Bucky to The Joker. Both characters were mysterious. You never saw them in between their chaotic action scenes, they just showed up, caused mayhem and disappeared until the next one. And every time they showed up they had this eerie theme playing. And they were both disfigured and were total opposites of the protagonist but that's par for the course for most bad guys.
That highway scene vs winter sildier is still some of the greatest shit Iv ever seen. That scene and daredevil hallway scene are the best fight scenes in mcu . They should have probably kept winter soldier bad for at least 3 more movies. Btw,nice tshirt bro
One thing I love about this movie is how utterly unstoppable Cap was. This man was smashing through doors and running around quicker than Usain Bolt like it's nothing. He was fucking dismantling _entire squads_ of trained special forces by himself, even in a cramped-ass elevator. He even managed to 1v1 a goddamned jet. Cap really put the 'SUPER' in super-soldier here. He is HIM.
I cannot believe it’s been 10 years! This movie is fantastic, and I watched it twice when I was at Air Force Tech School. It’s such a great movie! I sincerely believe it’s the best of the Marvel Cinematic Universe!
This movie was meticulously build. Every character, every interaction had you on your edge. Packed upto perfection. Black Widow was best used here. It was disappointing to see how her own movie couldn't even manage to do this much. Also Ironman won't be such a strong figure if WS wasn't this good bcs whole foundation of Civil War gets build here. We understood why both choose what they believe. The whole Infinity Saga got saved by this movie and it was extreme luck that CW turned another solid movie. I think audience actually took MCU seriously and not just toys fighting on big screen bcs of psychology warfare and betrayal went in WS. That Zola scene is absolutely haunting and had everyone in the audience re-think of our own reality. It was amazing!
2014 also gave rise to Agents of Shield. Even though it wasn't technically MCU, it was still an incredible show, and was a great supplement to the great movies coming out.
The dark knight showed the possibility of using comic book characters and mixing them with other genres. No one has had the guts to try and they succeeded when they did. It was a watershed moment. If TDK was a failure. I doubt we could had seen a masterpiece like this that places Cap in an espionage thriller. Remarkable what the Russos did here.
@@bonifaceonyekaba8849 I just don’t see what’s special about that movie. The action scenes totally take me out because Christian bale was soo stiff. It was a nice movie but wasn’t a good Batman movie. What did TDK do that X-men 2 or Spiderman 2 didn’t do?
Personally I wanted Bucky to get the shield. He CAN become his own person outside of Steve’s shadow, just needs the good writing to do first. And not……. “You got to do better senator, you’ve got to step up.”
I just want to see them allow Bucky to become a hero in his own right, which he should be able to do with or without the shield. He has all the makings of one, its just the lazy writers are scared of him overshadowing other characters.
Also, the idea of seeing him visit Peggy in her older years battling Alzheimer’s was heartbreaking. Off screen he certainly had to relive Peggy realizing he was alive so many times. It was his last familiar connection to the life he had before fighting Winter Soldier.
Another thing you totally forgot to mention is the commentary that the movie provides on the theme of freedom vs. security in an increasingly digital age.
Captain America: Civil War is also a commentary on that too, in that Tony basically is prepared to exchange freedom for security. The trouble is that people have problems understanding how that is wrong in the context of the movie. In TWS its more obvious because the antagonist Pierce is HYDRA whereas Ross is not known to be so antagonistic unless you watch other MCU material.
One small thing that someone made me notice some time ago: Steve ditching his Stealth suit and using his old WWII uniform during the final moments of this movie is also for him to help in being recognized by Bucky. After all it was the Cap version James knew the most from his years spent in the Howling Commandos.
I don’t think anyone can argue about this movie!!! I was thinking of it the other Day when my Parents where watching Robert Redford in something, and I remembered, man he was great in Winter Soldier...Man, that was an impressive Marvel movie, everything was crazy impressive about it!!!
This movie was also partly adapting the zeitgeist of the time - the Edward Snowdon saga. The paranoia of is the govt shady and are we truly doing the right thing as an individual and as a nation were high. Hydra infiltration coming to light invoked the same feeling. That genuinely resonated and made the film more relatable. This is an often overlooked take.
Steve roger was just built different in this movie

people on twitter have nothing better to do than to make up shit to be mad about. captws is nearly the perfect superhero movie and the only thing that lets it down is making everything hydra's fault at the last minute. hydra can still be involved but i think it's a huge cop out to remove all the government surveillence stuff in favour of don't worry it was just the nazis we don't need to have themes. everything else is literally perfect. the action is still some of the best i've ever seen. that first bucky/steve fight where steve loses his shield still hits it's completely perfect. i genuinely think this movie has the best fight choreography of any mcu movie.
Same here😢
Sad
Gosh, I still get goosebumps whenever cap asks if anyone wants to leave the elevator before they begin. and the callback in infinity war where he gets out of the situation tactically instead of through force. so cool!
"I'm not going to launch those ships.... Captains Orders."
😭 😭 😭
When I saw the first Cap America movie, I thought it was good - but that's about it. So when I headed into the theatre to watch this, I didn't have much expectations. I think that's the biggest reason why I was completely blown away by it:it definitely is Marvel's Dark Knight
Really hoping they can capture the awesome action scenes the winter soldier had in brave new world. Those Cap movies really were the backbone for the MCU in its first 3 phases
It’s gonna be hard without that sweet serum. I wish Cap 2.0 had the wings and strength, he should be the next level
@FullFatVideos I'm glad I'm reading people say this! I love Sam's character but they're going to have to pull it out the bag to stop him feeling underpowered and underwhelming without the serum
This doesn't even mention the absolute banger of a soundtrack that the movie had. The track 'Taking a stand' still gets me going every time I hear it.
Winter Soldier will forever be my Favourite MCU movie.
I have spammed the main theme all week, makes me really nostalgic now
It's depressing to see just how far the MCU has fallen.
10 years is crazy. It feels like it wasnt that long ago but time truly does fly
Yeah. Also mad to think Spider-Man 2 was ten at that time, doesn’t feel like the same gap now for WS
Everything about this movie is top notch, I thought “this is what Captian America would be if he was real”
I re-watched Winter Soldier right before Civil War. Civil War felt like a let down to me. That was how good Winter Soldier was.
Yeah they could’ve name avengers civil war.
it's annoying cause they used Captain America franchise for Civil War.
@@WhatEver-10292 The movie's main protagonist was steve....He drives the entire plot ....
@@aaronjohnson1286 The movie is about captain America and bucky barnes ....Why would it be an avengers film?
Thank you. The support from people like you makes it worth it!!!!
Honestly 2012 to 2019 was such peak mcu, i really wish and hope they manage to bring that magic back again
Agreed
Cap taking on a Quinn Jet. Like John McLean taking down a JSF with a car. Nothing outlandish at all
Yes!! By far and large still the best MCU film 👏🏽
This movie is the reason I love the MCU so much. It was absolute perfection.
God it’s been too long since I sat down with this movie. Gotta get back to it at some point.
You have a point about Steve definitely got the upper hand in some of his fights before 2014
Maybe it's not that important, but I appreciate that you took the time to shout out the stunt actors by full name.
Gave a like before even watching. My favorite movie in the entire MCU
Absolutely the best marvel movie to date is captain America winter soldier
Steve was an absolute machine in The Winter Soldier 🔥🔥
The scene in the lift lives in my head rent-free. How he uses it to his advantage in Endgame by saying 'Hail Hydra' gives me goosebumps every time.
And it's so novel to see Cap and Nat bond as close friends, love the small quirky jokes in-between, every now and then.
My dad despises superhero films, but when he saw this film, he said it didn’t feel like a superhero film, which is why he enjoyed it. It’s my favourite MCU film because it’s more grounded for an MCU film (I haven’t seen it in a while, so I might be misremembering it 😅)
Winter Soldier is just a solid movie. One of my personal favorites.
Thumbnail is fire 🔥
Thank goodness!!!
I agree with everything you've said about this movie, definitely in my top 5, just cant get enough!👍
People also really under appreciate or overlook the fantastic score by Henry Jackman for the Captain America films
"Taking a stand " is my phone's ring tone. 🤘😎
For me, the fact that he was the least super powered in Assemble, but still threw himself in first was what sold him to me…
Great video!! MCU at it's best!! I still look forward to great things from the franchise but this movie will always be a highlight. Thank you for a great, positive piece!
Cheers!
watching catws back in the day alongside agents of shield had me buzzing out of my skin with excitement. this is still hands down the best mcu film imo. part of it, i think, is that none of the characters feel like theyre forced into being funny or snarky for no reason
This movie really was a wake up call for me towards Cap as a character and its still my favorite MCU film to this date 🙌🏾
Excellent video! This film still stands out as being top tier MCU even 10 years later so its always good to see it get the praise it thoroughly deserves, this film has aged like a fine wine
Please do the GOTG video for August as well! I would love to see your thoughts on that film and the completed Guardians Saga
Yeah I think it’s defo needed now!
YES!. yes.
This is what I am always telling my wife. Captain America should always be a hero in a 90's Tom Clancy movie.
I really wish they make an R-rated winter soldier movie, wherein they show his capture by hydra, the torment and maybe his other missions.
He is HIM.
Excellet review. I always thought the Winter Soldier and Cival War were underrated.
10:56 that was captain falcon levels of awesomness
Great video. Well done 👏
Thank you! 👍
Idk why people call The Dark Night the greatest comic book movie ever when this masterpiece exist, the action alone makes this better
Idk why people call The Dark Knight the best comic book movie when it's not even accurate to the comics lmao
Both are some of the best cbms but dark knight has better writing and cap ws has better action
The Dark Knight ran so Captain America: The Winter Soldier could say "on your left" action wise.
The best superhero flick of all time IMO, especially with what’s going on in the real world nowadays.
Dark Knight and Winter Soldier , the standard bearers in superhero action flicks
This movie is still the gold standard for MCU fare. A decade after this movie is out, I have a Captain America stealth suit hoodie in my rotation.
Simply the best.
Yo, this breakdown was really well done. 👏🏽
Subscribed 👍🏽
Appreciate it!
Love that stealth suit.
The best!
Put some respect on Shang Chi too, that movie had probably the best hand to hand stuff ever
After all it was the Cap version James knew the most from his years spent in the Howling Commandos.
never gets old!!
