I've yet to see anyone comment on the historical relevance of this particular line. Yes it's an EXCELLENT line with an amazing delivery BUT IT ALSO is a line most Jewish people use when referring to the holocaust in general. So to have this survivor of the camps to say it, especially in response to the 'they were just following orders' line is an excellent choice on multiple levels.
And it's pure comics. There's a reason why it is almost impossible to see Eric as a true villain. He may be the greatest anti-hero ever written, perpetually trying to save his people whether they want him to or not.
@@amireal2u The entire POINT of the line is its historic significance - I suspect people don't comment on that because it is exceedingly obvious? I don't think anyone thinks it's an excellent line without considering the context of Magneto's time spent as a holocaust survivor.
"Unfortunately, you killed my mother" followed by Erik putting the coin through Shaw's head is one of my favourite scenes in anything ever. Megachills every time
Yeah! The best Hero-Villain dynamic in any story is when the two parties start out as friends, but eventually come to blows as a result of differing perspectives on a particular issue. It isn't a conflict of clear cut Good vs. Evil, but of two people whose opposing arguments have merit. Complexity and tragedy.
Magneto is a far cry from a villain. He is the anti-hero. Calling Magneto a villain would be like calling Wolverine a villain. Neither are but their tragic backstories have shaped their views of the world, rightfully so. Professor X has been afforded his black and white moral line, because he has been very privileged. It is easy to judge the anti-hero harshly when you've not had to live in their world.
I love how the cuba beach scene " men following orders" paralleled with Erik Nazi hunt in argentina where the guy said " we were just following orders" and Erik killed him. The moment Charles spoke I was like that's the worst possible thing to say to a guy who survived holocaust and it showed how at a time he was relying just on his powers to read. It was the best character development moment for both iconic characters.
I’ve always said this. First Class is so severely underrated. First movie that finally let go of Wolverine’s dependency and showed off that there are other mutants and interesting characters. It was like a Classic Espionage movie with mutants. It also was top notch with all of the casting. Heck, the majority of people wouldn’t mind if James and Michael joined the MCU as Charles and Erik again.
Liz Williams One of my favorite cameos. And it became a pivotal part of DoFP too. Charles remembered how Logan didn’t help him, when he needed him before.

The bar scene is in Argentina, not Switzerland. That’s why they begin by speaking Spanish. Lots of Nazis were given sanctuary in Argentina, and there is a substantial German minority still living there today.
Yeah but it doesn't look like Argentina at all. That sequence, as good as it is, is somewhat famous in Argentina because the city it takes place in, Villa Gesell, has cero mountains in it in real life. It's actually a beach destination. My guess is the people working on the movie thought Gesell sounded kind of German and since Josef Mengele was hiding in Bariloche and Bariloche has mountains, well let's put all of those things together. The one thing I do love about the sequence though is the music. The gave the Magneto theme a twist and musicalized the sequence with a Creole guitar version.
Mariano Mosquera Maybe it was just for tax purposes. Eastern Europe in particular doesn’t tax a lot for film crews so major studios tend to work out there if they need a semi-exotic location.
@@tatehildyard5332 That wouldn't make it make any more sense inside the story, really. There's no mountains in Villa Gesell, it's all beaches. I never thought I would need a Magneto: Nazi Hunter movie, yet here we are. If only studios did things for the fun of it and the creative merit and not purely for money, we'd get some of that excellence that is seemingly lost to the ages.
The problem is that Magneto *is* a Nazi, just as the men that he is hunting, except that his ubermenchen are “mutants” instead of Aryans. His only problem with Shaw was that he killed his mother, and shortly his “Mutants Only” attitude would have made her as disposable as Rebecca Romijn’s Raven in Last Stand after being hit with the mutant power-cancelling darts.
@@Egilhelmson @Egilhelmson Excuse me what? Ok, so let's go over all the problems with the claims you just made. Firstly, Magneto ain't a Nazi. Though he does attack the outside world based on his ideology, he always attacks officials of the government he is targeting. Who his nation is at war with. He attacks enemy mutants the same as humans as well, not taking steps to broad strokes exterminate humans. Second, and this is a big one, mutants ARE basically a different race than humans. And are without question upgraded, ergo superior to anyone paying attention. Him claiming mutants are the evolutionary step forward, in their world, actually bears a fair amount of proof and his world often puts a lot of effort into trying to either enslave or exterminate them. Attacks against those that target your species and nation can easily just be seen as war battles. Third , you remember that he lived in a CONCENTRATION CAMP?! Shaw killing his mom was the last straw, not his entire motivation. Him and his mom had been suffering through that mistreatment, and he suffered through Shaw's grooming after that while watching his friends and fellows die. There is a lot of reasons for Magneto to want to hunt Nazis, and I'd wager he would still be hunting them after he got Shaw if he didn't have a fledgling Mutant nation to deal with. Sincerely I'm not quite sure where your arguments are coming from co sidering all we know about this story, its characters and the universe. It's a seriously bad take.
I've been saying this for a long time, this movie is so underrated and doesn't get talked of enough, it's my favorite Xmen movie, and Micheal Fassbender as magneto and James Mcavoy as Xavier was just great casting and their crossing stories are heart touching and oh my Magnetos theme is just delicious
I was gonna ask, "Who are these chuds you're hanging out with who disagree that this is an amazing movie?!" but then I saw the basement-dweller that responded. This town needs an enema!
I've long said Fassbender would make a great Bond. He's such a fine actor an has such catlike grace and restrained brutality, plus he can wear damn near anything without looking ridiculous (a rarer and more significant quality than most realize). Glad to see that highlighted here. The X-Men movies have been largely disappointing but this one rescues so much of a wasted franchise.
Fassbender is a great actor. It's sad to think what his career might have been if his movie choices had panned out better. While I don't think it's tarnished his reputation that he's been in so many stinkers (the later X-men movies, the Alien-series and that awful Assassin's Creed movie), since he's always been seen as the best part of those movies, it can't have done him any favours either. To me, he's the best choice for the next Bond, but due to his career, I don't know if he'll get the chance.
x-men franchise was products of their time but also I feel that they don't get enough credit because the x-men movies are faithful to the source material of the ultimate which is a shit comic
Maybe I'm in the minority on this, I actually feel like Fassbender would kind of be too obvious of a choice. I mean, I've never been a big James Bond aficianado, though I have seen every Daniel Craig entry except Quantum Of Solace (come to think of it I wish I could not have seen Spectre). I feel like my memory is at the time of the last switch over, Craig was far from the first choice on many peoples' minds, but maybe I'm getting that totally wrong. But all in all I think he's done a terrific job, when he had something good to work with. Part of what made him intriguing is he wasn't a totally obvious fit. Then again, I also think that Simon Quarterman (Lee Sizemore on "Westworld") would make a really interesting pick for whenever they go onto a new Doctor on Doctor Who, I've been saying this for months and I've literally not had a single person say they agree with me lol
Hadn't really given much thought to a new Who since I have not enjoyed Chibnall's tenure and had not thought of Quarterman, but he is an interesting choice (sort of half Capadli, half Tennant). Thanks for giving me something to chew on.
I do really feel that no one has ever thought of an “old man Bond” storyline, it could be one hell of a banger with an older actor like, i don’t know... Jeremy Irons maybe? Just spitballing
Interesting note here about the ‘just following orders’ bit near the end, Erik doesn’t get angry at Charles for saying it, he completely understands that Charles just doesn’t fucking get it as opposed to any sort of malice on his part
@@TKinfinity01 and too bad that Apocalypse was unable to complete the trilogy in a good way... and I have a feeling when I eventually watch Dark Phoenix it may (although unlikely) get shifted into my category of films I refuse to acknowledge the existence of.
I’m sure it would have been cool, but after First Class I thought it was actually great just to see Magneto & his brotherhood just hanging out, trying not to get involved with humans
First Class has been my favorite for a while now. Michael Fassebender imo is the best thing to happen to this franchise since Hugh Jackman. The scene in Argentina is easily one of the best scenes in the franchise, and Magneto's character gained so much depth due to this performance and movie.
Magneto's powers are so f'ing cool, all of these movies have that one big "Magneto doing insane shit with this powers" scene and they were all amazing. But I think that both the big moments in this movie take that cool factor and add emotional stuff into it, which made it better. I'm sad all the time when I think of how later directors squandered the cast and potential of these characters for cheap plots that didn't make sense and way too much JLaw.
Truth. Compare the relative simplicity of Magneto turning a German luger on one of his oppressors in First Class to the later big scenes in later movies. The First Class scenes are far more meaningful and powerful. Even the later movies cash in on First Class, the scene of Magneto turning Auschwitz inside out in Apocalypse wouldn't have been impactful at all if it weren't for First Class.
@@MrMisanthrope84 The later movies do nothing but sustain on the good writings of First Class. Erik did nothing but betray Charles, and Charles was an idiot for letting Erik run loose. I wish the later films had done more to develop their friendship rather than just reminding us of it.
I love this video, but I'm shocked you brushed over the best line 'I've been at the mercy of men just following orders. Never again'. That line summarises Magneto so brilliantly, and provides so much motivation for him (for those unaware 'we were just following orders' was the defence many Nazis used for participating in the Holocaust)

Eric couldnt stop Shaw alone, Xavier as well. They have to work together at that one moment to stop him, and they did. This shows that they are unstoppable together, the mind and body. The tragic truth is, that was the only moment they ever truly work together, as moving forward they will separately. That is what this movie was trying to imply, that movie alone.

Honestly, I fell in love with this movie when I first saw it! This review does it justice (I always knew I couldn't be alone). I had no idea it had been such a rush job. It's never really shown in my viewings, the story was surprisingly good and well paced. The cinematography I've thought was grounded but breathtaking and often (like the coin scenes) beautifully poetic, and with a soundtrack that enhances the experience as much as the visuals. You know it's good when after the something-eth viewing the hairs still stand up on your neck. So, somebody's got to ask... why did nobody get these guys for Star Wars? They seem to do well with a scramble.
Agreed! As a kid I would've never guessed that Magneto pushing a coin through someone's head would be such an emotionally cathartic scene, better than any punch 'em up!
This movie actually got me into superhero movies, when I was 27 I watched it on a trans-Atlantic flights. It was the history bits and the mutants as a metaphor for persecuted minorities. I had literally never watch a superhero movie before, or read a comic book, or anything of the sort. So I agree with you.
‘I’m Frankenstein’s monster. And I’m looking for my creator.’ Ugh.. oh yeah. F*** yeah! That is magic right there. This is the best moment in any xmen film and the dynamic between Charles and Erik is just... Yes. More. Please more god damn it more!!!
Honestly, the dichotomy between the hopeful First Class theme (it reminds me of Pacific Rim's theme) with Magneto's more boiling cynical rage driven theme make for a fun listen. Jackman's themes are among the best of the Fox series and it's unfortunate he only had one go at them.
The scene where Charles looks into Eric's head and sees the Hannukah candles, and sharing his pain... this movie wasn't just a superhero movie, it was an emotional journey. Easily my favorite one because of how it's telling an excellent story with beautiful writing.
Magneto by Henry Jackman is one of my all time favourite scores to any film and probably the best character score ever, it sums up Magneto’s intensity so perfectly
This and Rise of the Planet of the Apes bookended the same summer & I LOVE how both make you sympathize immensely with characters that are usually viewed as "villains". Magneto & Ceaser were the two most complex mainstream cinema characters we've seen in a while. "I've been at the mercy of men 'just following orders'", what a constantly resonant line. #MagnetoWasRight
When you recap what happened in the movie and its significance, I now understand why all the following movies bombed. X-Men First Class's narrative culminated in the establishment of the X-Men and the Brotherhood of Mutants. They should have built the following movies upon that, this divide between Professor X and Magneto and the factions they created. Instead, they lost focus and crammed whole story arcs in standalone movies.
The yellow suits look stupid tho. The only times the X-uniforms were ever badass was in the Ultimate comics. I'm glad the movies never gave us that ridiculous Wolverine costume from the comics. He'd look even worse than Captain America's costume in the MCU.

Also, he tried to throw a while lot of shit into one film. He tried to use his old toys and ruined what was set up in First Class. Plus Lawrenece was shit as Mystique...

FINALLY someone stating FACTS about the best xmen film!!! also yes charles and erik are literally in love throughout this film i cannot be the only one who sees it lmaoo
Yes. Everything about this film is superior. The dialogue, the characters, the set pieces, the MUSIC. I am still annoyed they reverted to Singer's formula for the sequel, as much as I enjoyed it I felt it didn't maintain the boldness of this movie. I loved the yellow suits too. The Magneto origin story is just so.... EPIC. Magneto as a Nazi Hunter is the best damn movie idea, that's movie catnip. The Frankensteins Monster scene is easily one of the best scenes in all comic book movie history. I enjoy this movie so much, it's easily the most rewatchable Xmen. Like the Magneto meme says, perfection.
You know what I love about First Class and DOFP being two X-Men films released back-to-back? One revealed the moment in history where humans first settled their differences to unite against mutants, and the other showed the melting point between them further in the future, almost at the end of that conflict with one side utterly gaining dominance. Watching them back to back is honest to god one of the best experiences ever, both being good movies is just icing on the cake.
This movie does not get enough love. I love that 60’s vibe the director brought to the movie. The scene with Magneto dealing with ex-Nazis was incredible. It made you forget that Magneto is the bad guy. What I didn’t like about the sequel is that the Mystique character was brought to the forefront and the story revolved around the Mystique character.
While I love first class and find it amazing i will forever be disappointed we never got X-men Origins: Magneto. I feel like that argentina scene was just a taste of what that movie would of been. Ah well...
I love the praise of this movie. It's always held something special for me, and until now, I usually only encounter people who hate it. This is my favourite x-men film, and though I never put it into words, you summed up the reasons why perfectly.
It is 100% the best xmen film (Logan is separate for me seeing as it’s not an ensemble film) and the only one to actually use its time period properly Erik and Charles have such a beautiful friendship, it’s fascinating to watch them together and come apart at the end
The thing I love the most about this film is that Maggie and Xavi (as I affectionately call them) are best friends- best bros - which makes all their subsequent warring much more momentous
I saw X Men First Class in theaters back when I was only 7. Compared to the other shit I watched as a 7 year old, this movie was on the same dramatic level to me as Schindler’s List.
I LOVE this movie, it has the perfect amount of action and the perfect amount of dialogue. As much as I liked days of future past I often wish we lived in the reality where Vaughn got his trilogy.
Henry Jackman's music for Magneto is the best! absolutely chilling and aces the character, I remember after watching this movie looking for the end song because it was that good
If l'm to be honest, I don't want the x-men in the mcu they work better beeing on their own universe, they have enough material to work with to create their own shared universe that could have rivaled the mcu. The inhumans/NUhumans would have been a good replacement for the mutants in the mcu and would fit perfectly in the the mcu at this moment. They have an explanation to why superpowered humans(the NUhumans) suddently start popping across the globe and the explanation is "the terrigene mist". sadly fox fucked up with their continuity.
If y’all want another Matthew Vaughn film to watch, I can never recommend enough his directorial debut Layer Cake. A gangster film starring Daniel Craig, Colm Meaney, Tom Hardy, Sienna Miller, and Michael Gambon. It is one of the smartest, my quotable, and perfectly written and shot movies ever.
I really like how well it portrays the way a man can fall "to the dark side", and I use it as an example of how Revenge of the Sith should have treated Annakin's fall.
Glad to see someone saying this - I adore First Class. It’s by far the best X-Men team movie, it’s not even close. The period setting, the actors, everything is firing on all cylinders.
YES! First Class is absolutely the best X-Men film and my favorite. I had no idea it had such a difficult production and knowing that now only enhances the movie in my eyes
EXCELLENT video. You thoroughly covered all aspects of the film - although you could easily have gone on for at least another 30 minutes. I found this movie very powerful. I still get chills watching that submarine being pulled into the air and carried, and the music is just PERFECT. I still choke up when Xavier catches a bullet. There’s so much going on that I almost forget it’s coming. I love Days of Future Past too, so I hope you’ll consider doing a vid for it.

The cut you made between Magneto throwing the coin at the drawing of Shaw and putting it through his head was excellent! Looked like it came straight from the film Also it sounded like a Call of Duty hitmark 😂
As great as the lifting the submarine ship scene was (which was amazing!) I was surprised it wasn’t the climax of the film. Rather it was a payoff from earlier: I recommend this film to anyone who is new to the x-men series. It’s by far my favorite of all of them!
Glad to see a lively discussion about this excellent film so many years after its release. I enjoyed it immensely, the themes, the character development, the style and setting. All executed to perfection. Thank you for making this!
As seemingly the only person in the world who's favorite X-Men movie is First Class, I'm a BIG fan of the title. My biggest gripe is that Xavier was paralyzed by a ricochet and not from the coin going through Shaw's head while Charles had him frozen
Is that what's in the canon? Both are fine, but the ricochet makes more sense for continuity and power scaling reasons. It would be a huge weakness if the professor could be permanently injured whenever someone he's connected to is injured.
I remember not being excited to see this after the dissapointing X films before it. So much so that I almost didnt see it in theaters until my friends dragged me to it. About halfway through I sat in awe of how amazing this movie actually was & how much fun I was having watching it. To this day Im mad they didnt let Vaughn direct the sequel since he brought the franchise back from the brink.
I love the intro to X2, but the first trilogy doesn't hold up at all. Likewise, while The Wolverine did make amends bridge the gap, it still has its issues.
"If you know you're good at something, it's means you're not challenging yourself" Which goes hand in hand with; "If you're good at something, never do it for free" Guess these two films. You know my favorite films in its franchise
Yay I love that movie! Erik and Charles’ relationship is definitely the driving force of that movies and what the other origin movie that came after haven’t managed to recreate
Something I've always loved about Shaw's plan is how it mirrors the conflict between Xavier and Mystique. Shaw wants to nuke the world because he believes mutants will survive it while the humans die. But in reality, a majority of the mutants will also die in the nuking. But Shaw's powers make him perfect to survive it. In the same way, Xavier wants humans and mutants to live in harmony. And of course he thinks it would be easy, his powers allow him to perfectly blend in with humans. Meanwhile mutants like Mystique and Beast have to put in effort to get past the immediate negative reactions humans have to them. Both Xavier and Shaw think their plans will work because they forget that not everyone has the same privileges that they were born with. It ends up driving Mystique away from Xavier and, if Shaw were to have won, it most likely would've killed most of the mutants he's closest to.
For me, the opening scene was the first intro to the horrors of the holocaust and taught me sympathy. This was just the first time that I remember being made to feel something as I was just progressing into analysing the movies for the substance they hold.

Between this movie and Inglorious Basterds, I think Michael Fassbender established himself as the modern king of bar scenes
And Νazi hunting.
@@Egilhelmson
@Egilhelmson
Excuse me what?

One problem. They really mess up Darwin

Really great point!
