I Fixed The Leaking Transmission On My VW Touareg TDI

- I delivered my VW Tourage TDI home after buying it over 200 miles away in Cleveland, OH. The Touareg developed leaking transmission as soon as I parked it in my driveway. It was the transmission cooler that was damaged on my Volkswagen Touareg and leaked. I took it to the Volkswagen dealer to fix under the warranty - unfortunately the leak was caused by a damage of a part not by failure. I had to fix it myself as I decided not to pay $1500 for something I could do in few hours in my garage.

Nice Touareg. I would like to buy one like the one you have. Excellent video.
$1500 job. lol. INSANE. A transmission cooler isn't complicated, nor the work swapping one out.
That’s the same Dealership I use!!!
So was that coolant or transmission fluid? I’m starting to see little spot of what seem like water on ground coming from the corner of the bumper on my driver side
In my case it was transmission fluid. Trans cooler is the small raditor in front at the bottom.
Thanks for sharing your experience with the Toureg, I'm seriously considering a diesel-gate Jetta or Golf TDI. Brian or Bryan at Leased Car Sales in Cleveland is a rare breed of car salesman, his offer to buy the Toureg back shows integrity of the highest order!
This is an amazing machine but just be warned that its costly to replace parts even if you do it yourself, and if you bring it to a stealership get ready to fork out thousands of dollars.
700$ to replace all brakes and rotors with OEM parts myself. Stealership said 1800$ an axle. Trans cooler cost 400$ to replace with fluid, stealership said 1300$ + 1000$ labour. Radiator fan assembly 500$ to replace with new, stealership 1500$ + 1000$ labour and a month to get the part. So just be very aware of this issue, I HIGHLY recommend buying VCDS before hand and doing a scan on all the VW you plan to buy to make sure you can pay correctly.
Oh man, know the feeling I got seat Alhambra and basically same engine and gear box.
Whst was the consisity of the fluids
A couple of things here. The oil and be added through the pan drain, using a M10x1 brake line, available from most auto shops, and a primer pump commonly used on boat motors. I wish i could find a tranny cooler for less than $1400.00
Was it making a noise?
I am guessing you used the bottom line / the return from the cooler to push that new fluid through? I am in the process of doing this removed the cooler already and putting in the new one tomorrow just want to make sure I am pushing the new fluid through the right hose.
You could see that the plastic tube had been peppered by something. Pretty sure the front bumper has been replaced or repainted, since there are no stone chips visible at all. Impossible to have the plastic hose peppered and not hit the bumper too. $1200 labour to replace the part - the dealer sure is hungry :) The transmission oil was pretty putrid - definitely overdue for the service.
The dealer you purchased you VW Touareg from is worth mentioning for sure. How many would do what he did? Just outstanding the way he stood behind his sale-- you could return it or he would help with the repair! If I lived closer to his dealership I would buy a car from him or at least shake his hand.
Sometimes to fix a small hole on a hose can be used with duct tape (a Southern favorite), also gum, superglue gel or if possible, replace the hose.
$1500??????!!!
I have the exact same problem! Pin hole leak. I was debating to just aluminum solder it. Think that would work? Can one heat up that tubing hot enough with the fluid still inside?
Not a clue. I would rather replace it.
Thanks for the video. I wondered how your first experience with the warranty would be. Although their explanation of why they would not cover your repair makes sense, I have a suspicion that VW will not make things easy. Kind of like "free" universal health care for America. Everyone is "covered" but good luck getting treated.
That is a beautiful SUV, by the way. I test drove one and was so impressed by the quality that I am seriously considering buying one. Your videos are very helpful.
I also had it in for rough idle, and they covered that under the warranty. Coming up in future videos.
Great video, thanks. I see your VW is 8 years old and it has close to 100K miles on it. How it is possible you have a powertrain warranty? All my searches give me 5 yr/60,000 mi or 10 yr/100,000 mi for cars after 2015.
The 2012 toureg came with 10years 100k miles powertrain warranty.
Then I have the diesel gate warranty on engine, fuel system, exhaust etc until about 140k miles (4 years, 48k miles since the fix).
Powertrain is completely different from “bumper to bumper”. It doesn’t cover anything but whatever gives it power. Which according from the warranty document is very little.
Same happened with my 2012 touareg. Got it done at stealership for $1700. There is no protective screening in that grill.
My 2012 just did the same thing. It's a tiny hole on one of the tubes between the fins, obviously caused by a rock or other flying debris. Trans fluid squirts out with authority! I'm going to check with my local shop to see if the hole can be repaired. I'd like to avoid the PIA and cost of replacing the cooler.
@@sideskraft Same here, I was able to find a replacement on ebay new for 350$ CND seriously just do it yourself its super simple, I will mention that in his video he did not unbolt the cooler from the thermostat you will need to take that screw off to remove the cooler. Behind the cooler is more rad fins that are probably super dirty so make sure you got a nice wire brush to give them a nice clean. Getting the tube fixed will probably cost you 200$ may as well buy new since your finds are probably all fucked.
What happened with the Cadillac SRX?
I sold the SRX. I am putting 60 miles everyday to anf from work. Fuel efficiency become an issue - I am getting 30 mpg on this SUV to andnfrom work. Also I will be moving in near future and needed a rig that can tow. This VW can tow up to 8,000 lbs
