I have a 2014 Touareg TDI. I did a ATF and filter change yesterday. I just want to note that the standpipe requires 4.5mm hex. Thanks Gary, this video helped me.
I'm happy the video helped you.
Thank you for the good sense to give the size.
thank you. i will remember not to have fun, and Sir, you know way way more than being kept covered in oil. I do appreciate your sacrifice to show us what not to do. :) very helpful video for my next weekend job. happy new year
Happy New year. Thanks for your comments.
Terrific job Gary, I love VWS personality I own a 2012 Touareg TDI❤️❤️❤️
Thanks for your comments. These are great cars.
Gary, thanks for posting the video. It was helpful to hear about the final amount of fluid you ended up using. Thanks!
I think 8 liters is enough to have on hand to do this job
@@garysgarage2118 7 will due
Nice video... I just did this on my wife's q7 tdi with the 8spd tranny. You at least caught some of the remaining fluid in your drain pan.... I got all of it on the floor... Luckily cleaned up ok with old towels, brake clean, dish soap and water and then kitty litter left on it for a day to get rid of the stain.... If there is a next time, I'm going to leave 4 bolts in the corners done up loosely so the pan doesnt do that again when it gets unstuck from the tranny. I decided not to replace the filter, as it's just a fairly course mesh, and only catches catastrophic damage... My wife's q7 has 178K km on it... we bought it in Sept 2018 with 105K km on it.... no idea if the tranny fluid has been flushed before. I used liqui moly ATF1800 for my fluid change
Thanks Peter. We all keep learning ever day. Cheers
Thank you for the fun part but very very practical and can’t wait to do it after learning from you!
Great, Cheers
thank you for your video how to drain vw touareg coolant changing I hope you can make a video thanks
Your a great tech!!!
great video. Many thanks
You have made my day sir ... i laughed so bad
Good sir! this video is very informative on the steps to take to do the change i´m thingking about buying a t2 Touareg, they seem like very good all around cars.
Just a piece of advise, using an extension with a swivel joint on a torque wrench can change the distance between the fastener and the wrench handle, affecting the torque applied. I saw you straighting it as much as you could, but there were some tight spots.
You are correct, it was as close as I could get. Thanks
Дякую за відео, уважно спостерігав за вами. Так все акуратно робите.💙💛
GOOD AFTERNOON FRIEND. CAN YOU HELP ME LOCATE THE SPEED SENSOR OF THE TOUAREG YEAR 2007 V-8 ENGINE 4.2 FSI GV. I NEED TO REPLACE IT BUT I DON'T KNOW WHERE IT IS?
Thanks
hi Gary...thanks for making the video! just wondering about getting the proper level. so after you put in the 9 or maybe 8 is fine then you run the car at idle then bring the transmission oil to the right temperature and remove the first drain plug to let out the extra oil. so you need to keep it running once the temperature is reach and open the drain plug?
Yes you need to keep the engine running. Otherwise more oil will run out and the level will be low.
Hi Gary, Thanks for doing the video, very good and helpful.
Have you ever done a video for this car on how to change the gearbox oil pressure lines and small cooler radiator? The ones that goes to the side of the transmission and the other to the pre heater on top of the transmission ? Just wondered if is a difficult job and expensive or not? Thanks Jon
I haven’t done that job sorry
@@garysgarage2118 ok cheers
Thank for sharing this video. Once the transmission is at the required temperature for setting the fluid level, do you keep the engine running while setting the level or have the engine off?
Hi Andrew. You need to keep it running to set the level. Once the engine is off the level rises and you would end up with too little fluid in the transmission if you set it like that.
@@garysgarage2118 thanks dude, a banged it out on the weekend. All went smooth! 200,000klm, hope to keep it going for another 200,000
Hey thanks for the video question can you send a link or name of the transmission level tool the green part you used I can’t seem to find that anywhere
Hi Manny. Thanks for watching. The green level tube comes in the transmission pan from the factory. Some are different colors, but mine was green. Take it out and re-install carefully.
Am I right in thinking the gearbox is the same in the newer CR7 Touaregs? Ours is 2019
@@StefStiflerW thanks for your comments. I believe it is an evolution of the one in my Touareg. I have not service a newer one.
excellent video, thanks for posting it. I have a question, is there any other oil cheaper than the one I use or one that I can find in the Mexican market?
Always use a good quality Transmission fluid that is specified for the transmission you are servicing . The pan drop service in the video only replaces 60 to 65% of the fluid. The fluids must compatible with what is already in the transmission so use the spec provided by the manufacturer. I like the German fluid I use. All the correct fluids for this transmission are expensive
Why did you not disconnect the trans cooling lines and flush all old fluid? thanks.
It would get more of the old fluid out, however you can't get the fluid out of the torque converter anyway so the recommended service is pan drop and change ~70% and do it more often.
Gary you mentioned to check level at correct temperature. Can you say at what is correct temperature to perform fluid level check.
Thank you
There is a range. I don’t recall exactly but is About 45 deg C
@@garysgarage2118 35-45 deg C This i know from other vids on ytb :) Greeetings from poland. Im prepairing myself to do that oil change. But can You tell one thing... when You put the rest of the oil [ i mean this extra above 7 liters] and You are waiting till its dribbling - the engine is running or not?
@@trocki80 needs to be running
Thanks for the great video
Glad you enjoyed it
Do you have the procedure if you were to drain the torque converter as well?
No I do not. It is not required for regular service. If the fluid is real bad just repeat the process a few weeks later.
Hi Gary, thanks for the video. So about 1.5 liters of fluid came out of the side check bolt? Thanks in advance
Not sure what you mean by side check bolt. Level check is by stand pipe in the pan drain. And about 900ml came out.
@@garysgarage2118 thanks! Appreciate your reply. Nice work!
Thanks for the video. What is the reason why you fill up thr oil 2 times? Should not be easier just let's say pump in 8L and let it drain untill the level it's reach? Thanks
Thank you for your question. It is important to have fluid in the system before starting the car the pump in the transmission runs all the time the engine dose. Then once the transmission is at temperature you can finish filling and set the level. This is just normal procedure. With this type of fill system it would possible to just put in the recommended amount then warm up the fluid and drain off the excess.
@@garysgarage2118 thanks for the reply gary. To be honest still dont understand for what reason the filling up it is done in 2 times. If you fill up 8L, close the drain plug, turn ON engine and let transmission warm up, open drain plug at the right temperature, close the drain plug when level it's reached. Isnt easier? Thanks again
@@garysgarage2118 hi, i just read better your answer and you confirmed it's possible with this transmission to do it just in one step. Thank you
Hi boss thanks for Explaining & Video Sir. I have Qaution my car porsche cayenne turbo 2009 277k what ur Upinon if change fluid gearbox I will face issues & what the solution....thank you Again for Video..best regard to u.KSA
Try and change the fluid on regular intervals for maximum life. Avoid flushing as this can cause issues. It happened to me on my truck.
Torque specs are 10 Nm for the filter and 8 Nm for the pan
Hi, Thanks for the info. Can you quote your source?
@@garysgarage2118 yessir I got it from alldata at my work
Thanks for your video. I had mine changed at 150 and plan to change again now at 230 K. I was told to drain and refill without taking the pan of. Would all the oil drain that way or just part of it?
There is about 2 liters of fluid that will stay in the pan if you don't remove it. You want to replace the filter and you can only do that if you drop the pan. You could consider doing just the oil and changing it more frequently but not what I would do. CHeers
@@garysgarage2118 hi again
Where would you buy a pump to put the fluid in?
Thank you for this video Gary. How has your experience been with this Febi ATF?
I only used it twice but both times was a success. Audi A6 went 120,000 kms with no problems.
@@garysgarage2118 Thanks alot
@@garysgarage2118 How has this transmission fluid been in the Touareg so far?
@@suz9094 all good so far. No issues with transmission
@@garysgarage2118 thanks 😊
Gary do u live near northern NH I’m at the border with Canada
Sorry, not near there.
Do u need to do a transmission reset or adaptation?
@@ihci No the transmission works as before.
@@garysgarage2118 thank you.
Could it be possible not to have the plastic insert for the level ?
Hi Rene There may be different variations of the transmission and pan. My car is a 2014. The plastic part when removed allows you to drain a lot of the fluid before removing the pan. When installed provides a means to set the correct fluid level. Normal full level is close to the top of the pan. I hope your not missing yours. If so get one from VW
Hey... The 8 gear Aisin transmission requires a special green oil. The cheap red ATF (DEXRON III) is wrong.
What came out was never green. And I used the correct spec fluid not the cheep ATF. How got to remind people to get the correct spec fluid for your transmission. That may mean going to the dealer parts counter.
@@garysgarage2118 Hey... I was wrong. I had green oil (right spec)... i figured out, that there are different colour for the same spec. sorry.
@@gg86 no problem thanks for posting
The correct oil spec is Toyota WS (much cheaper than VW spec). Also Ravenol t-ws lifetime. Probably Febi is not easy to find in USA
also i was thinking of using a infrared thermometer to check the temperature but i know it would be more accurate with a scan tool...can you recommend a scan tool?
I would not get a scan tool just for that job. The infrared thermometer is just fine to get the level correct. My tool is a Foxwell. There are all types of scan tools that will do the job for you. Just get one that covers all the cars you will use it on. Cheers
would be helpful to know what size all the fasteners are.
Thanks for your feedback. I will include this in future DYI videos 👍
Hi Gary, i’m the second owner of a 2012 Touareg. I’ve had it for a year and it’s got 165,000 miles on it. I’ve got all the maintenance records and everything has been done according to schedule but no transmission fluid change since it’s not recommended by VW. Car runs great and transmission shift smoothly. I’d like to do this service but I’m a little concerned at this mileage. Would you still feel comfortable doing it at this mileage?
Great question. In my opinion yes do it. You will probably find more metal on the magnets, but that is normal. Don't have it flushed, just drain, change filter and refill as in the video.
Would you be so kind and say exact spec /part nr of transmission fluid you used please
Hi Mr Fair, Thanks for your question. The ATF is Febi Bilstein Nr.29934
How did you determine the fluid type, did it say in your owner's manual? I ask because I have a Q7 with what appears to be the same transmission, but the manual doesn't specify the fluid.
ATF PN: G055540A2
You can put Febi Bilstein because is the same stuf as original VW.
Picked up my kit from Europaparts.com (not a sponsor)
Hey Gary, I’d rather have you do this than VW. I’m in South Carolina. How far are you from me?
Love the low county in SC. But my Garage is way up north in Canada. I would not get my local VW shop do this either. Find a good local independent shop that does a lot of German cars for your best shot a proper job.
@@garysgarage2118 Thanks so much for the reply Gary.
Do you have a link to the fill adapter? I'm struggling to find the right one.

@@garysgarage2118 Execellent thanks.
If fluid comes out when you take the first 5mm plug out that means it was over full/
No because the engine needs to be running when setting the level. With the engine off the level is higher in the pan and will start to run out.
@@garysgarage2118 Yes, of course.
is Gary's Garage the new ChrisFix? 😆
👍
This transmission don’t need to do the service according to the Vw service manual
I know that is what VW states. However if you want the transmission to last the life of the car and engine (which is very long time by the way) I highly recommend this service.
How often do you need to change DSG fluid on a VW Touareg 2004 V8?
VW recommends 150K. And some independent import garages recommend every 50k. I know that not changing can lead to an expensive repair. I would not go past 75K.
Touareg no es DSG, es Tiptronic. Saludos.
@@garysgarage2118 thanks! Mine has 110k km, transmision started to kick downshift 5th to 4th gear. I changed transmision fluid with original OEM ATF, but it did not fix the problem. The transmision kicks are getting worse, and when I step on the gas, it gets even worst. Any advice to fix the problem?
Little mess 🤣🤣🤣 nice work
Thanks for watching
hi what oil you used?
Hi Arunas, I used Febi Bilstein Nr.29934 ATF
@@garysgarage2118 what about oil in torque converter mix with another oil quality?
@@frijus100 That is why it’s important to use the correct spec fluid. If you are concerned get the fluid from VW.
I am changing to Ravenol t-ws (the Touareg has factory fluid) but I'm going to do a double flush to avoid as much as possible the mixing of oils
🤣👌
Gary about how many miles should this service be done on this transmission thanks
My opinion is at 75,000 miles. Sooner if all the miles are stop and go city driving. My Touareg was more highway and long road trip use. By the condition of the fluid it was due.

Mine took just over 7 liters. May have spilled some. :-)
8.3L-1.5L is not 7.5L. took out about liters and put about 6L back in, and still too much.

5mm allen bolt...that is 2mm smaller than my kidney stone !!!
