  • Today we're back working on the Volkswagen TDI, and today we're changing the DSG transmission fluid. If you take your car to a mechanic, the average price is about $400-500, but in just under an hour and for around $100, you can change it yourself!
    I picked up a DSG fluid service kit from FCP euro, as well as a fill plug from Amazon. Below are the parts I used:
    DSG transmission fill adapter: amzn.to/3Eazf3Z
    FCP euro DSG service kit: www.fcpeuro.com/products/audi...
    14mm hex for drain plug: amzn.to/3lql3fP
    Step-by-step instructions from BlauParts: www.blauparts.com/blog/how-to...
    If you're not already subscribed, please consider doing so. It's a free way to support our channel and helps us know what kind of videos you like to watch.
    You can also head to our website at www.autoanatomy.net and from there you can find our merch page, blog, social media platforms, and much more.
    Thanks for watching, God bless, and we'll see you later!

      Jeremy, I would guess between 2009 & 2014, it looks a lot like ours., which is a 2013. I don't think there is much difference in generations or the VW Stable including Audi.as far as general procedure goes.

    CORRECTION!!!
    Once the fluid is drained out, insert the black plastic valve (it does have a hole in the center so fluid WILL go through).
    THEN, proceed to fill with new transmission fluid either from above or below.

      I think the point of not putting the black tube back in right away and filling with 2.5 liters then cycling through the gears is to flush the old fluid out of every part of the transmission. Then draining that 2.5 liters, to install the black tube for the final refill. I dont think that step is necessary, but if you want to be super picky about it, do the step and the fluid change will be that much cleaner.

    Maybe the video didnt show it properly, but the engine should be running when you drain the excess to set the level. More fluid is retained because it is actively coating the surfaces in the transmission. If you do it with the engine off, you will not have enough oil retained.

    Are you able to show a little more detail about where you blocked it up safely so all four wheels are level and off the ground? That's the only part I'm not sure about since I am not lucky enough to have a lift and I know ramps won't work since it would make the car at an angle and mess with getting th right level set.

    • @A2J_Tim
      @A2J_Tim 10 месяцев назад

      there are four thickened points along the pinch welds that are designed to be the lift points of the car, put your jack stands there. If you are not comfortable with that ask a mechanic to show where they are and how to correctly use them.

    • @honnomr79
      @honnomr79 9 месяцев назад

      I know where those are at but the area is so small that's it is very hard to have enough room to both jack up the vehicle then slip a jack stand in there to hold it in place.

    • @honnomr79

      Yeah I know where those are located - the area is just so small that at least with the equipment I have, it's hard to jack up and have enough room to slip a jack stand underneath. What I wound up doing was finding a location on my sloped driveway where I could drive the front wheels up on my ramps facing downhill and due to the angle that made the car mostly level. @@A2J_Tim

      Burning the seals? This is the way the factory states to fill the transmission.

    what a crazy design - fill oil from drain plug and filter hidden under battery so you cant easily just at least change the filter. why cant you just add the oil slowly in via the oil filter hole ?
    what a messy way to have to fill the oil, wasting a load of oil whilst fiddling with that plastic thing.

    • @AutoAnatomy
      @AutoAnatomy  2 года назад +2

      It seems odd but by having that long plastic piece in place it prevents over-filling by having the excess drain out. Not the most elegant, but it works.

    • @joeintern
      @joeintern 2 года назад +2

      You can replace the plastic straw from the bottom before filling with new fluid. You can also fill from the top if you want to - it is just slower.

    OMG You did this WRONG! Do not follow this video.
    You are supposed to reinstall the level pipe before filling.
    To set the fluid level you need to leave the engine running and allow the internal pump to circulate fluid. You drain the excess fluid when the DSG fluid reaches 35C - 45C.
    A VW/Audi scan tool is used to monitor the transmission fluid temperature.

      Thanks for the feedback. It seems there are varying opinions on the correct timing of the level pipe installation.

    NOOO you are runing the transmission! It needs to be drained at 49 degrees celsius in order to get all the oil out and also the transmission should be washed with a special liquid on the inside

    • @AutoAnatomy
      @AutoAnatomy  Год назад +1

      Fluid should be 35-45C and I have never heard of any special liquid that goes in the trans, except the DSG specific fluid.

      @@AutoAnatomy that's what the guy at VW told me, and also my mechanic

    • @AutoAnatomy
      @AutoAnatomy  Год назад

      I can’t speak to that, but the instructions say to not let the fluid get above 45C and (personally) I would not put anything other than DSG fluid in the trans unless it is being rebuilt.

    Don't buy a car with a DSG transmission!!! If they break, and they regularly do, it will cost a small fortune to get it repaired (3,5-6K)!

    The procedure is definitely wrong and can result in a damaged transmission.
    Better consult a service Manuel, e.g. ELSA.

    • @Shawn609

    • @davidbias2509

      The standpipe that sets the fluid level is supposed to be installed first then attach the adapter to fill the DSG with the new fluid. Once that is done remove the fill adapter and put the drain plug back into place and run the transmission through all the gears waiting 3 seconds btwn shifts. After that is done let the vehicle run until the fluid comes up to the recommended temperature and then turn the vehicle off and let the fluid drain until it is a slow trickle and then install and torque the drain plug. The fluid must be brought up to temperature as it expands as it gets hot and running it up to temperature allows the new fluid to move air out of the nooks and crannies inside the case and filter circuit.

      @@davidbias2509 Your comment "turn the vehicle off and let the fluid drain until it is a slow trickle and then install and torque the drain plug" contradicts several other youtube videos, where the fluid levelling procedure requires the engine to remain running whilst letting the fluid drain to a slow trickle.
