How to Factory Reset DSG Automatic Gearbox || A Must Do For a Used Car!

- Опубликовано: 10 дек 2021
- In this video, I explain how you can factory reset your DSG automatic gearbox. This is especially important if you bought a used car and you are not satisfied with the learned behavior of the automatic shifting from the previous owner of the car. When you do a factory reset, the DSG will come with the settings as from the factory and will start learning from your own preference rather than having it learned from the previous car owner.
This sometimes also helps resolve minor issues with the DSG gearbox and the car is not jerking anymore. It shifts gears much smoother after the factory reset. DIY #DSG #Automatic #Reset - Авто/Мото
In short, read the comment. In long, watch the video for more details and tips :)
1. Car must be on park position with handbrake
2. Press the gas all the way down
3. Put the key and start the ignition while still pressing the foot on the gas
4. Wait for around 30s
5. Now turn the ignition off, but don't release the gas
6. Wait for 20s more on the gas
7. Now you can remove the key and go out of the car
8. Lock the car
9. Unlock the car and do a test drive for the new experience!
What does it really do

Thank u so much for the tip , I own a vento 1.5 TDI DSG and had very abnormal gear shifting of DSG secondary to my city traffic since many months . After ur video I just tried the reset and found that my AC temp setting was reset to 19.5C and DSG shift became better . Tons of appreciation on making this video
Awesome! Glad it helped.
I tried this method in my 2018 VW Tiguan MQB and it works, Now the DSG shift faster and car accelerating a lot faster than before .. Thanks for your tips Man .. 😃👍
Good to hear!

I'm from Canada with a 2013 VW GLI and after noticing struggling performance and acceleration tried this method today and it honestly does reset the throttle control which is controlled electronily, I noticed big improvement in down shifts and acceleration from a stop/start!
Amazing, glad it was helpful!
Just did this on my 2017 USDM Alltrack that I bought used. Shifting way more smoothly now. 👍
Glad it helped!
I am using VW Passat 2014 model and I have the same issue shown in the video. I have visited many garages and they says diff reasons and no one can help to sort out. I have tried the same method proposed here. It worked out well. My car jerking goes off and it's smooth now. Thanks a ton. I am sure This will help for many other VW users. Watching in the UK - thanks for your video
Thanks for watching! Regards for UK :)
I learned something new today, thanks.
In the UK, DSG dry clutch is not very popular among VW enthusiasts.
Thanks for watching and sharing the UK`s preference :)
The VW DSG is not a dry clutch set-up. FYI. Happy New Year!
@@markb3756 FYI it surely is. A 08 dsg 7 spd is dry clutch. Newer generations are not dry though
@@markb3756 My 2017 1.0 TSI DSG 7 is a dry clutch.
That is just how the Factory TCU shifts gears when you are not on the gas pedal. It does that for MPG. If you accelerate with at least 50% throttle it would shift at a higher point.
Nice to know you can reset the settings this way though, instead of using a VCDS or OBDII device.
Yes, agree with you for the gas, more gas it will shift in higher RPM. But this factory reset helps it shifts more "normal" maintaining lower gas.
I have an older DSG without eco mode so it will shift 1 gear per 10km that's normal. It will automatically relearn your driving patterns after a few kms so you need to be consistent with your foot on the gas, more pressure on "D" will mean higher rpm. The important thing is to not treat it like a conventional automatic and help it to better predict your next move.
Thank you for your comment :)
Du dumme 😂😂
Worked like a charm on my South African Used 2015 Golf 7 GTI! It used to hold the revs too high before changing and now it changes instantly just how i like it!
I did hear some noises from beneath the car during the process.
Thanks so much!
Thanks for sharing
That's the throttle body that was reset.
Thank you for great video
Glad you enjoyed it Dalibor. Pozdrav :)
My 2011 CC was starting to get very annoying. It would jerk and short shift. By 30 mph it was already in 4th gear. If I wanted more power it was extremely sluggish and all of a sudden it would down shift and the take off like a rocket.
I reset it like you showed and guess what? It's like a whole new transmission.
Thank you!
Amazing, glad it was helpful.
true story same happened to me as l just bought a vr6 300hp cc and it was very sluggish l did this reset and it feels more responsive straight away ! My next move is obd11 pro for more throttle response or buy the speed booster

Hi,I just done it to my vw polo 2013 DSG automatic and now the problem gone
Thank you 🙏 mate
Amazing
Seems to have worked on my KIA Ceed 7DCT. So far it feels like it worked, shifting alot smoother at a bit higher rpm it seems, not sure. I have a diesel with decent torque so now pulling off feels nice.
yeah 6th gear at 30MPH is very annoying! I had this issue and thought it was just the way the factory TCU was programmed.
I even got the TCU tuned because of this but it only did minor changes in manual or sport mode.
Sport mode is definitely better but in Sport for me it goes into too high RPMs.
It’s work thank u a lot❤️
Welcome 👍
Thanks man. I just did this to my 2007 VW Caddy TDI. It goes like new again. I heard the clicks and again when I switched the ignition off. Now the gears don't change too quickly. It feels like a manual
Nice work!
Thanks for the video, will this help with issues with Creep/Crawl function and Hill hold Assist as well?
Hello for that I am not sure as my car was not SUV didn`t had these options.
The car doesn't move anymore when in D
I have to press on the gas pedal to move forward,,,,will reset help fix that isuue
It seems to me that the car shifts in the same manner as before doing this “adaptation”. Shifting gears fast, is actually a good thing. It means less fuel consumpltion. On my 2010 cc, this procedure does absolutely nothing, tried it so many times, and absolutely nothing happends.
It is good for fuel consumption but then it builds carbon inside the engine :)
@@UnboxingSve just use the semi auto function/paddle shift and keep it in 2/3rd gear
I just did this on my 2010 volks cc 2.0 turbo but i did do it a lil different. I got n car, locked doors, turned ignition on but did not start car. Then held gas pedal down 30 secs til i heard the click i did not take my key out as this will void the reset. U have to crank the car. My check engine light went off, i drove the car and all is well

I did a reset yesterday After 200 km today with the engine idling I have a grinding sound and also a bearing. and a whistling sound when driving. can I relate this to a reset?

Hello can I ask you some question? I have passat b7 2011 125 kw dsg 6+r, and when it shift from 3-4 or start agresivly to pick up speet I feel some vibration, so can I fixied it with this reset?
Yes you can try this reset it does not cost you anything, it can just be better.
Very nice car....
It sure is!
Does this procedure also apply to the Renault dsg/edc dry clutch gearbox? I have a 2012 Renault fluence with such a EDC gearbox.
Hello, I am not sure for Renault, nothing cost you to try it :)
@@UnboxingSve I already gave it a shot, worked splendidly. Snappier, smoother shifting. I use the manual mode in that semi-automatic as the full auto was really a slouch. That full auto now improved as well!
Would this help in case when transmission goes to Neutral by itself while driving in D?
Hmm for that it will be hard that this will help but you can give it a try. I am afraid you will need to open the gearbox to fix that.
If you open the rear left passenger door and keep it open, open the driver's door and slam it you will hear a clicking sound. Once you have heard the clicking sound sit in the driver's seat and put the key in the ignition, leave it there for 6 seconds and start the car. Now you will notice that the rear left passenger door is closed, but how?
As soon as you slammed that door you activated car learning mode, now the car knows everything about your life. It knows what you did.
🤣😂
Scary thing :D
Lol
too funny.....
Hello,
Does the engine / coolant temp. affect by the reset process? You didn't say anything about it and I can see that the coolant temp. is max.
Greetings from 🇵🇱
Hello, no, this does not have anything in common with coolant temp. You should check that is some other issue.

New oil and filter helps too
Could be, didn`t try that as the shifting is very smooth.

Brilliant job mate, can you please tell me how often I should change oil in that automatic transmission df7 ?
Thank you very much. DSG gearbox oil should be replaced every 40,000 miles ~ 65,000 km.
@@UnboxingSve dsg 7 you don’t have to change oil
Use GL 4 oil only, GL 5 as too much sulphur shorting out internal connections. No synthetic oil, mineral oil only vw advisory bulletin. Does this throttle reset work for a skoda Octavia with dsg gearbox?
Yes, as it is the same VW parts
Witam.
Hi my Friend ¿in what cases specifically I need to do this procedure?
If your car jams, does not shift properly, etc.
Can we apply this on Audi RS3 2016? Thanks
Nothing cost you to try it :)
How do you do That with a 2015 keyless model ? Thanks
You press the start stop button without pressing the brake. That is how you enter the ignition mode.
I replied from other account :)
2019 vw polo aw gti 59 200km, tried the process heard all the sounds and clicks I believe I've too reset the dsg successfully
Great, any difference after reseting it?
My friend did a dsg reset and sometimes the gear will be stuck on d1 and won’t shift up, any idea?
He should try changing gear oil.
What is the orange light on the dashboard next to the 180
It is to check the tyre pressure. One tire was deflated a bit, once you put them all on the same pressure you can reset this and this disappears. Which I actually did later that day :) Check all tire pressure, inflate which one is below required pressure, and press reset button and this indicator will disappear. It depends from car to car where this button is, on the older car it is usually in the glove box, on the newer models you can reset it on the touch screen.

how does this affect the car when the transmission is tuned?
That I am not sure. When it is tunned I guess they change the computer so it will not affect as it will not be anymore factory computer.
I have golf mk6 Dsg gear box shifting normally but the gear letters that was showing on the instrument cluster stopped showing anyone faced such problem and what's the fix guys thanks in advance
That looks more like an electrical problem so not sure.
Thats mehatronic unit
I have a tuned DSG, if I reset does it remove the tune?
The tune is for computer ECU so not sure how it is connected to DSG.
Works for EDC on Renault?
Not sure, I never draw Renault :)
now it shifts earlier than what you showed us before.
I put that in the video, it still sometimes shift early but definitely not earlier than before. Of curse everything depends how hard you are pressing the acceleration but I tried to simulate the same conditions. If I push it harder it will shift between 2 and 3k and if you put gas pedal all the way to the end it will go and shift all the way to the red line. One thing is sure, this process definitely helps your car shifts better.
Hi, how long tha gearbox is learning? Thanks
200km
It is always learning but after some time it will not have anything new to learn if you drive always the same way :D
@@nikolamarkovic1570 DSG do not adapt to you'r driving style. It's a myth.

does this work if battery is unplugged?
I don`t think so.
I see you have a TPMS light on. …you got aftermarket wheels installed?
Hi, no, it was stock wheels. At that time I had just bought the car so I didn`t have time to check the pressure and restart it. I did later restart the TPMS and it never came back again.
Vw/ audi use the ABS sensor to determine tyre pressure. Not a sensor in the wheel 👍🏻
@@gavl.f.c6197 it depends! Some VW cars are actually equipped with presure sensor for each wheel. It was an option feature :]

@@mikestead3804 In case of ABS it mesure the correct wheel pressure by estimation of wheel spinning. ABS itself cannot determine tyre pressaure. To provide you exact data you need wheel presure sensor to check it directley.
Can I do this with my Peugeot 508 ?
Not sure, this works only on German cars.
Just a little trick, whenever I want to reset my DSG I put it in manual mode and shift it the way I want it to shift and once I get to 6th gear immediately put it back in drive.
Interesting I will try that as well :)

Hey I’m American and thinking of trading my car for a tdi Passat with 118k miles or 189k km, do you think it would be worth it even with the timing belt needing done soon? Thank you.
I was thinking in USA they don`t drive diesel cars :D Which model is passat? 190km is not that much if it is mainly from the highway and if the maintenance was good. Make sure to plug it in and check for any computer errors and check with a mechanic for any leakes.
@@UnboxingSve Diesel cars are not common here and I’ve only seen acouple lol. That said I want something with good gas mileage but that’s not boring like a Prius so I figure hey why not lol. It’s a b7 sel premium passat with the 2.0 tdi.
@the general the b7 is really just a b6.5 (for some reason in this generation they called the mid life face lift a new model). I had the b6 for about 4 years and 300k km. During that time the car left me stranded twice as the electric park break motors on the two rear wheels failed, a common issue due to some plastic housing that gets damaged and allows dirt and water to enter. Other than that the window regulator of the drivers window failed. The 2.0tdi are known to have some injector issues, but that is common to most diesels. Service history is a must, as is regular oil and filter changes, that is the key to long life of any diesel engine. In general they are a spacious comfortable cruiser, don't expect sporty handling. A few rattles and squeaks, and some of the textured rubber coating that is on the plastics can peal from common touch points like light and window switches. If you want a bit more get up and go, then the 2.0tdi is very tuneable for extra torque which makes it a nice lazy drive where you can leave it in 3rd (if it's a manual) from 20 through 60 if you want, just remember if you do tune it, there will be more smoke from your dirty diesel. All in all they are a good solid car
I just bought a used 2019 passat 1.8L turbo with mileage 5000 km. It is great to hear of passat travelling nearly 200,000 km as the impression in Asia is dsg and vw speed sensor always give trouble. Asians also don't travel that much and usually change to newer car. Cheers.

Gearboxes should not "learn" anything, but it should be optimized from factory for reliability. You should also be able to adjust minimum RPM. I don't like it when DSG boxes run engines at way too low RPM. It is bad for engine to run it at an RPM too low. I don't care if it consumes 0.01 liters more or less.
Yes completely agree. I drive now Dodge and it shifts always around 2,000 rpm, very few times below that.
@@UnboxingSve I test drove a VW with 1 liter 3 cylinder engine some years ago. At steady speed it used like 1300rpm and sounded like engine was strugling. Probably not, but didn't like that.
This doesn’t hurt the transmission in anyway?
Can restart of your mobile phone or PC hurt it or it makes it faster and better? :)
it does! Dont do it!
@@zoxtoPictures how does it supposedly hurt it?
@@SSW1FTT DSG Transmissions are like normal manual gearboxes but these are robotized. So they have clutch ect like normal gearboxes. If you set back to the factory settings they are going to reset the clutch possitions as well! They are also not recommanded to set back after a normal oil change becouse the oil can be new. But the clutches are used. So can happen they are not going to work at all. They can learn how you drive, they can learn how old is the oil and they can learn how used is your clutches but u cant set back seperatly.
If you have a newer version of DSG you can reset but do it with oil change together over transmission ECU and ask your car mechanic about it! Those newer transmissions can do that seperatly. BTW if you drive a car with your style after time it'll learn how YOU drive!

That car is at least a 2013, not a 2012. In addition, it has a 6-speed transmission and so it certainly never reached 7th gear. I can't comment on the rest of the video, it seems unlikely that this procedure would reset the TCU.
