  • With the final issue of The Last Ronin released, we decided to go back through the original run of Eastman and Laird's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and find out exactly how long they were teenagers. Grab the time specter as we go back in time to plot out when the Ninja Turtles, what year they defeated the Shredder, and when The Last Ronin takes place. To plot out this timeline, we explore the original Mirage comics, other Eastman and Laird projects, and IDW's The Last Ronin.

    I figured that since turtles normally live such very long lives, their juvenile, adolescence, or 'teenager phase' would last significantly longer than humans.

    I have an even bigger question. Why did a successful movie like TMNT do so well and the studio allow sub par movies to be made after in sequels 2 and 3.

    • @Rocket1377
      @Rocket1377 Год назад +3

      One of the reasons is that parents complained about the violence in the first one, which is why the sequels toned down the use of weapons.

    She’s asking the real questions.

  • @Dargonhuman
    @Dargonhuman 2 года назад +4

    The answer isn't as straightforward as just looking on a calendar and largely depends on how we're defining "teenager" and what specific species they are.
    If we're defining "teenager" as a specific chronological age, then they were teenagers for only 7 years - between the ages of 13 and 20 - just like any other species that lives longer than 20 years.
    If we're defining "teenager" as the period of time that encapsulates the adolescent phase of ageing, then there's a good chance they were "teens" for up to 50 years, which means they could have still been adolescents by the end of The Last Ronin. Unless, of course, they are of a species that matures faster - some reach maturity in as little as 10 years - so there's also a chance that they were adults before hitting their teen years.
    And that's all going on the natural, unaltered life cycles of terrestrial turtles. I won't even speculate on how the Utrom mutagen might have altered their life cycles; rats tend to only live about 2 years but Splinter was still going strong after 30 years so who knows when the turtles actually fully "grew up".

None of the turtles wear all red mask they don't kill with their weapons only a few times where leo decapitated ch'rell shredder for which they didn't know he was an utrom or fighting the illusions of splinter and the disembodiment of the devil in this version the comics didn't have hun until vol.4 which he was retconned into the lore along with charles Pennington from the 1990 film by Tristan Jones there was no notes from the underground monster characters or sewer home with love craftian origins that opens up top to the NYC streets there's no ultimate ninja touch and go

    She called them tortoises, they're turtles. If you wanted an all encompassing term, terrapin is the proper venacular.

    • @ChannelingSpirits
      @ChannelingSpirits  Год назад +1

      It depends on where you live. Terrapin isn't common in the US and for most Americans it denotes a small specific type of chelonian. Other places terrapin is specific to freshwater chelonian while turtle used for marine or ocean-dwelling chelonians.
      In the US, turtle is the overarching term which usually encompasses turtles, tortoises, and terrapins. The question is, are the Ninja Turtles actually turtles? They are occasionally semi-aquatic but also have some tortoise qualities (modern depictions ie. IDW, the 2012 show, etc.) show them with more tortoise-like feet. Arguably, they spend their time predominantly on land. They do not possess and webbed-feet or other aquatic adaptations that turtles/terrapins tend to have.
      This could be a consequence of their mutation or maybe the term "turtle" was used in the American sense meaning any chelonian. Regardless, we used artistic license when calling tortoises (it gets a bit boring writing and saying turtle over and over). However, a case could be made that they are, in fact, tortoises.

    The last ronin isn't canon to mirage it's it's own universe. That uses idw comics art style 87 cartoon and 1990s movie references.
    1)Donatello in mirage is the last surviving ninja turtle not Michaelangelo, Michaelangelo would die in the tmnt odyssey book meeting his fate by faking his death via an utrom transmat device and became the villianous shogun using the power of the turnstone from the Archie adventures tmnt universe to destroy the tmnt multiverse teaming up with mr null, savanti romero, and savanti juliet, In the end with the help of the Archie ninja turtle ally/ villain slash, venus demilo, and the mighty mutanimals mirage Michaelangelo would be killed by an elderly mirage raph, elderly mirage leo and an elderly mirage don ressurected from the points of their deaths by a dying elderly renet who gave them the last bit of her powers to fight savanti romero and savanti juliet.
    2) baxter was a cyborg with his brain he put himself in a robot in area 51 in vol2 of tmnt, in last ronin they made him a henchmen of the foot which he never actually crossed paths with the foot.
    3) oroku hiroto cannot be the grandson of shredder and karai is not sherdders daughter, oroku saki had no heirs in the mirage comics he was resurrected two times by modern science and foot mystics black magic, unless image tmnt aka tmnt urban legends is canon oroku pimiko would be oroku saki's daughter suspected to be the kunoich called "the mistress" and revealed as the assassin "headhunter" aka tang amai who lord komodo adopted pimiko after her mom died
    4) karai is not related to shredder, she's actually older than oroku saki and is the Japanese branch of the foot jonin where as saki was just the american branch of the foot chunin who the nyc foot only answered to the shredders authority rather than the original operation in Japan.
    5) the turtles and splinter die differently in mirage Canon, splinter passes away from a heart attack alone at Casey's farm in Massachusetts and becomes a totem God of the rats replacing the rat king and is the one in control of the battle Nexus and is replaced with a clone by Donatello that was set to be created after curing himself of being small as an action figure and cure raph of his dinosaur appearance, Raphael dies in the Brazilian jungle a feral hermit missing one eye from caseys adopted daughter shadow jones who is destined to become a foot ninja and lost one of his sais converting the remaining sai into a spear fighting off drug kingpins and dies alone in a jungle as revealed in Michaelangelo Christmas special reprint Christmas Carole esque short story of Raphael's Christmas future, Leonardo would live to be 100 years old as a widower formerly married to native American superhero radical raven shadowheart who was killed by her arch nemisis complete carnage leo would slay complete carnage and then lead a life of becoming a pacifist who traded in his dual katana for an electric boken from Donatello, go on a time traveling adventure with his younger selves to save a dying elderly god and commit seppuku, Donatello would be revealed as the last ninja turtle in a short story by Peter laird and Kevin eastman and he would out live his brothers and die on his death bed blind and elderly passing away in his sleep.

    While I agree that the last Roman is a good companion piece to the original Mirage comics run, they obviously can't fit into the same continuity. Obviously the last ronin takes a lot from Mirage, but it's another timeline.
    As for the Mirage timeline itself, since you only covered volume one I would say that volume is by far the most fluid since it's more or less the longest. So I'd say that while you could say it pretty much occurs in real time, I would somewhat argue against that. But I think it's up to interpretation so to each his own. And don't even get me started on the other volumes.
    The comics continuity is far more complex than you've laid out here. Migraine inducingly so.
