Harley-Davidson's big mistake!

- From 2018-2021 Harley offered their base Electra Glide for 19K. That bike was a price leader touring motorcycle that, for the money, had everything you needed to go touring right out of the showroom. Why would they stop production on their touring price leader?

They killed off the Road King standard too. Blasphemy!
Agreed Jerry, foolish decision to cancel the standard.
Not enough profit for....greed!
The Electra Glide Standard and the standard FLHR Road King had everything you need and nothing you don't and would be the perfect "entry level" touring bikes for today's sorry economy. Imho they were discontinued because they weren't profitable enough for the Motor Company. Pushing everything upmarket has its limits and I think will prove to be short sighted alienating a big part of their core customer base. Glad I got my '21 FLHR when I did- the Electra Glide Standard was my other choice.
I too believe it was wrong that HD got rid of the Electra Glide Standard...I am not a fan of Bikes with Infotainment and Riding Aids...20K is as high as i would EVER pay for a Mororcycle...
I agree with you, somewhat. But HD makes those decisions based off sales. Most sub $20k buyers go used and get a lot more bike with very low miles.
@@freebehindbars8654 Yes its all about $$$...And thats where i part ways....Am out to get the Best deal i can....And that includes parts...service...and all the freebies i can
They canceled it because they are trying to become basically the Rolex of the motorcycle world, according to the game plan of their CEO. They have over the last couple of years been axing all of their affordable value oriented bikes to focus on more and more expensive and exclusive motorcycles. The Street 500/750 (Their only beginner bikes), The Sportster/Iron bikes, The Softail Slim/Deluxe, The Sport Glide, The Road King (Base Model), The Street/Road Glide Special (Probably will be back next year or 2), The Electra Glide, have all been removed recently. Even the base model Pan America is gone leaving only the Special (Though for some crazy reason they came out with a CVO Pan America).
I like how the Pro Harley to the Core fanboys have run out of excuses for the brand. For a brand that loves to cry about losing money and blaming young adults for their lack of purchase, Harley does everything to not put bikes out onto the market that might at least get them a starter bike that they will later look to move up from.
@thespadestable nah, I only ride Harley exclusively, I just don't like other bikes. Just srent up to snuff, however....... I love the bikes, the bikes are great, the company..... not so much. Willie G is one of the worst things thay could have happened to Harley. It's fine have all the high end bikes great. I have no issues with rising aids and stereos. Especially if you're regularly riding accross country or taking constant 150-500 mole trips in a single day. It gets tiring without SOMETHING, which us why I bought a Helmet with Bluetooth so I can listen to tunew, however they need to keep the other bikes as well. Keep what sells, don't force people into stuff they don't want. Only thing I will say Harley has done right as a company is to keep the V-Twin and develope thay further than anyone else has, and to keep the iconic sound. Some of the newer bikes they've come out with and then discontinued before they ever even got off the ground were great. I'd love to get an FXDR but they did away with them quickly.
@@BMStoryTime develop them further? you mean with a throw away crank and plastic engine parts?
Wow, I didn't know HD touring motorcycles are the most maneuverable heavyweight motorcycles money can buy! I guess I'd better junk my Goldwing. I'm so disappointed. I just got it broken in at 150,000 miles and apparently, it's already obsolete. Hopefully a new HD will also have a smoother ride and get more than the measly 250 miles between fuel stops that I currently get. And I'm sure getting tired of being able to buy regular 87 octane, and the laughable 125 mph top speed.
They cancelled it because it wouldn’t sell. It’s not because people didn’t like the idea, its just that for only a few thousand more you could get nicer finishes, more colors, a radio of some kind and passenger seat with a street / road glide. It didn’t make any financial sense. I like the idea but was always so perplexed Harley (who prides themselves on fit and finish) sent that bike out with just a useless “glove box “ staring at the rider. They are a good value at used prices I’ll admit
Yea but they got rid of all standard touring but it’s like I’ve said before really the 107 for every day use are weekend you can’t beat it but I’m afraid HD is going in the direction they all are especially with the 24 SG RG because they getting more less than the consumer can control and change
Exactly, it's all based on sales figures and it doesn't make sense to produce what doesn't sell very well. "Blank canvas" models like the base Electra Glide weren't hot sellers for H-D. Really the only guys who bought them in my area were MC club members, the few of them who actually bought brand new bikes. I'm surprised they even kept the Softail Standard for '24.
NOT TRUE, As a former sales manager at HD these aren't big margin bikes and that's why they went away. We sold all of these we could get our hands on...
Seriously a few thousand more how about $10,000 more for the street glide
Hi Jerry, I didn't know about them having a new location. I'm back in Spring Hill Peace and E street, fence with all the flags stop in sometime. Brother is Rlliot tinkers on cars.Bought 07 RK yesterday Blue with whitewalls fish tails.
Yep you’re right. I bought one and added some leg guards. Toured all
Over Europe and just got back from a trip through Spain. 👍🏻👍🏻
Are there HD dealers in Europe?
@@terry_willis yes
IMHO…I believe the RK and/or Street glide are the best as far as moderately priced touring models. You can add a bat wing, pizza box, etc and it looks just like a road glide…for less money. I have both a RK and a SG, and I put on 10-15k miles traveling cross country every year so I may have some experience here. Oh and btw, my wife is 4’10” and she rides an RK as well. Like I said before, just my opinion.
Fantastic bike and fantastic price! I totally agree!
I agree with you Motorman. I really liked that model. Hated to see it go away. Great video.
Thanks 👍
Great review I own a 21 standard .My first big Harley touring and I love it didn’t want the stereo and got it a great price. Thanks Jerry for all your instruction it has helped me a lot with these bikes 👍
I bought a street glide standard. It's pretty much the exact same bike except the radio system. I would appear that I damn sure paid for that!
I have '19 electraglide, its a mid 19 so it had the sumping problem, that gave me an excuse to upgrade the cam, redshift 468 with all the s&s.goodies and dynojet with auto tume, and it pulls all the way to 6200 and has all the tourque where i ride. Made it my own with all the custom dynamics lights and 10 inch handle bars for better riding posture.rinehart exhaust, all the usual upgrades, they are a blank slate for customization, I didn't go too crazy,Dunlop American elite tires were a great step up from factory rubber too.
One of the best values in a recent pre-owned tourer, seeing them consistently between $13.5 and $16k these days in my area
Always appreciate your videos and reviews. A dealership a couple of hours from me has a ‘16 Electra Glide Police with under 20k miles, which I want to see once I get the time, unless they sell it by then…
Just give it a couple years and they’ll be forced to bring out more basic packages
I ended up buying a 2020 Ultra Limited after the dealership ran me off trying to hose me on a 24 SG. And I’m glad it happened because frankly with an Ultra Limited you can’t get more bike for the money.
I bought a 24 RG and I'm not liking it that much. It handles good but the clutch is terrible and the navigation system is an absolute travesty
my 2020 flhtp police bike is pretty much the same thing. The police bikes and the standards
are a great deal good video.
1990 FLHS evo powerd since new . thats all I need
EVOs are the greatest engine H-D ever made. No worries about catastrophic failure due to cam chain tensioner issues, no injection, simple, basic but great runners
@@dabsafeI have the 92' flhs
Listen up Harley Davison are the best motorcycles in the known universe. Believe it or not I ride a 1947 knucklehead. I can’t start it, but I can ride it.
In like '01 or '02 an Electra Glide standard went for 13,995. Was looking at that, Softail standard and Super Glide. Softail started at around 12,995. Super Glide out the door was like 12,595. Super Glide won. Wish I ordered Electra Glide.
I bought one because I loved the simplicity. It I’d a fabulous bike. Hate they stopped production.
Personally, I think HD are overpriced. The RK Classic for under 20k was a pretty good bargain. Most affordable tourers are gone.
You’re absolutely right on that EG! That’s a great price😎
I love my super glide , ive been looking at the road glides but im having a hard time letn go of my dyna
I have that bike. Absolutely love it. I have done a lot of upgrades so it's not so standard any more.
2019 electra glide police with the 114, just installed aftermarket stereo. Happy HD owner.
i have a 2008 sportster 1200 low anniversary been riding it for 5 years. I just found a 2012 street glide 40,000 miles one owner and he treated it well sadly he passed away. I made an $11,000 donation to his widow and will keep treating it well. Getting ready to take the Ride Like a Pro class locally just before my wife and I take a 2 week vacation and cruise some states.
You’re right on the money Jerry. I ride a 2008 Electra Glide Standard. Love this bike. You wanna listen to a radio, take the car.
Fr I hardly ever use my SG stereo
I bought my 19 EGS new and have really enjoyed it. The price and test ride were enough to convince me to trade in my Fat Bob. My only regret was not getting the ABS put on at the time of purchase. Overall, it's a great bike that took me to Florida and back without any problems.
You can stop the regrets. The dealer can't add ABS to a bike that didn't come with ABS from the factory.
Big Mistake! I bought Standards and added what I wanted.
what kind of pipes are on this motorcycle please let me know thank you.
60,000 miles of smiles on my 2018 SGS. All kinds of accessories but nothing done to the motor or exhaust. Not important to me. My next big improvement, a Wilber’s suspension system. I like practical accessories that provide real functionality. Life is good…
Jerry, you said and I agree, 18’ circles are damned difficult on a new goldwing. You were going to explain why and now I cant find the video. I prefer to stick with my wing but if I need to go street glide to win at slow manuvers tell me please!
The Wing has a 40 degree lean angle. That means despite having a longer wheelbase and rake than H.D. touring bikes, it can turn in 18 ft but you must lean it to it's limits. Then, to go from full lean left to full lean right quickly, as in the figure 8, takes strength and quick reflexes. In addition, the Wing has a very light flywheel. That makes the throttle very sensitive and difficult to modulate.
Love my EGS. I think it looks way better than a street glide because it has that cool rear fender tail light
They've been making alot of foolish decisions just like many other companies have been. They all need to decide whether they're with The People or against them. One of those two choices is fatal.
Yea I don’t think they should’ve gotten rid of any standard in the touring personally overall the 107 u really can’t beat it really all the big engine are nice but damn really often is anyone using it I could see if u was drag racing every weekend I do know they keep the RG standards are supposed to but who knows for 25 it’s just around the corner not to mention they are talking that they changing the engine in 27 r 28!so what now hybrids are electric it’s coming so get ready
It is a very nice box
Also ordered a set of Tab Slip On Mufflers. Thinking of ordering taller shocks which ones do you recommend?
I have no problem with the stock H.D. 13'' shocks. But if you have the money to spend, Legend or Ohlyn.
@@motorman857 thanks for you response

Well, I'm a cool guy so the heat doesn't bother me.

Hello,
I have been watching your videos and I am recently retired. I have had a life long dream of joining and riding in a 1% Outlaw Motorcycle Gang. Would you be able to teach me the basics I would need to be able to ride in a pack with them. I see them a lot where I live called The Pegens. I am looking to getting a road glide because I like how the steering wheel floats (haha I don’t know what you call it..handlebars ? I mean ). But that is my plan and main thing on my buck list before I die!
All the best nd thanks in advance sir!

I'm not sure who's the hardest to wrap my head around.... Harley or most of their customers I meet. I can't say that I'm a terribly big fan of this new look (modernization) that the manufactuer is pushing on the dealers and it really doesn't do anything for me (it's probably painful for them..... at least the setup). I also seem to meet all the low mile / no miles guys. I ride a Stage IV M8 131 (upgraded from 114) absolutely stripped down Street Bob (not a big fan of anything mounted to a bike..... never have been). I did try their original LiveWire not long ago..... I wanted to hate it, but that is quite a bike (more like a mid position Kawasaki with an electric motor and battery). It's pretty impressive, but the range is not there (plenty of torque and speed, but kiss your range goodbye). Would be an awesome commuter / traffic bike. I ran out of juice one day at 68 of 100 listed mile range (it will limp you in for a short distance after..... very short.... luckily I was a "short" distance from home).
I had one. No problems. A few DK added components and it was great. And with your videos could cut 18 ft turns with ease.
Should say we have had 5 Harley. None were ever in shop for any reason. So what’s with the junk fantasy. ??
Been looking at DK products, what did you put on your bike?
@@stacysid2 for our 05 Road King we purchased shocks and floorboard extender kit from DK. Good products and excellent service.
That's usually said by people who've never ridden a H.D. or, want one but can't afford it.
@@motorman857 that is true and unfortunate. Older Harleys can be affordable, infinitely repairable and make a fun, reliable bike.

Bring back the FXST-C

I was wondering what you were focused on. Now I know.
@@motorman857 I meant Harley is only focused on super expensive fully optioned out bikes. I prefer less being and value for my money like the one in your article.
How much groceries will it hold?
No idea, BUT, it will carry 2 cases of beer ;)
Nobody “hates Harley Davidson”. They just need to justify something they feel unbalanced about. There’s nothing about a Harley to “hate”. That’s just stupid. They’re as fine a machine as a person can get.
I could see it coming back. With more people using head sets and phones for music and GPS they can pull those features and people some people wont care.
Thanks motorman🤙😎💯
HD CEO has a year plan, just look what he did for Livewire.
But you didn't turn your head
Real men travel on bar bikes! Garbage wagons are for wimps
That engine with a Woods 222 cam is a beauty of a beastie little snot.
A true motorcycle has no bells and whistles but most consumers don't know that..
Nailed it. They're consumers, not motorcyclists.
I have one with a bell, but none with whistles, lol

What can I say. Live and learn. Now I need a real bike!
Well now you know that H.D. touring bikes are the most maneuverable heavyweight motorcycles money can buy. You're welcome. But if you don't believe it, bring your Wing to my class and I'll prove it to you. I dare you.
No one bought them. Good move on Harley’s part.
Actually, they sold every one they made.
Goldwing is the very best big bike out there. Every bell and whistle you could ever want in a bike. Ever reverse.
For a heavy bike Goldwings are not the best handling for the common day to day riding scenarios in the city. If you ride long tours and mostly stay on the highways they're great.
But it looks like a Winnebago and sounds like a sewing machine. Soooo….nah.
Can do without bells, definitely don't like whistles on a bike. But maybe when they add a toilet, shower and microwave...
@@dcccharles4569 that's because you really don't know how to ride.

Electra glide standard is a nice ride. Who needs a freaking stereo on two wheels.
Stereos on an HD just mask the sound of the real music coming from the pipes
I have a neighbor with a big full dress Harley with loud pipes on it, and a blasting stereo that has to be turned up loud to hear it over the loud pipes, because otherwise every person for a 1/4 mile radius might not be aware that the bike has a stereo and we might miss out on all that fun. And I dare not even hint at the silliness, no no no, because somebody might be offended, can't have that.
i do.
I never got the radio thing on a Harley either
I love listening to Seger and riding in the country! Puts me in a good state of mind. I always turn it down a little when I'm around a bunch of people or in town. I try and be respectful unlike some yahoos
Great Job, Jerry. You are spot on! Great price for a touring bike 1k miles!! Also a great empty canvas to make your own or full customization!!! Sad to see HD stop producing that bike.
Thanks! 👍
For someone who wants a fairing but doesn’t care about a stereo or tour pack, this makes sense and makes sense to me now. Years ago I spent a much of money on my Electra Glide Classic, changing the radio, added amplifier, upgraded front speakers, and added read speakers to the tour pack. In 2024, I don’t even turn the stereo on and took the tour pack and rear speakers off. 🤷🏻♂️ A standard Road King with windshield and hard bags is an overlooked gem as well.
Before I purchased my last motorcycle a 2018 road king, I was looking at an Electra glide and mentioned to the salesman that I didn’t want the radio, his reply was “ don’t turn it on “.
It wasn’t the best sales technique
you said it best nice bikes but very expensive ,with the way the economy is today who wants to dish out $20,000 for a bike !
Great video jerry i ride a 2001 ultra classic electra glide 1448 cubic inch its not top end fast but its so smoothe and i know it will never break on me because i dont hot rod it like the street bikes do around me
Have 99 UG and other UG's these bikes are the best and the ride is the best to. Harleys aren't the expensive. The used are very reasonable. Yeah brand new show room bikes aren't cheap. It's not hard to put a radio in a standard or a used police bike. Do anything with them with the aftermarket or harely parts.
Ride them all day and not break your back.
I'm stripping one down to a SG like bike. I'm getting a 10 yr UG next year to replace the my 99 UG for long hauls. I won't own any other motorcycle.

I like Harleys, but I'm a new rider riding a small 300 naked style sport, lightweight thing...lol......maybe someday....
how would this compare with the Vaquero? Probably could get a Kawi for like 3500 less than this and you get a stereo.
Harley is the worst bike out there and I'm just plain stupid for owning three of them 🤷♂️😁
Really why would you even watch the video I love them myself and the only thing I don't like about it is not mine
I have a 22 EGS and love it I’ve done a few mods to her and added some red touches because of the badging
Hey Motorman ! It shames me when I bought my new 2006 Heritage Softail. Now you can buy a good used newer or new one for what I paid. It's bad with my lower mileage & upgrades it probably wouldn't bring nothing price wise ! Keep up the good channel. Enjoyed! 😊
That 107 has buckets of torque. Solid motor that will be around in 50 or more years from now. Zero problems from my 2020 softail slim. When harley discontinue's a bike...just hope you own that model. More than likely, It'll be worth plenty one day. Great tour bike!
Greetings from Toronto Canada, as always I have enjoyed all your educational/safety video's and thank you for that . I find here in Toronto new HD's start at $38,000 to 50k , I don't see the logic of those prices, so I gently used Kasaki Vaquero like the one you test drove ,I love it , 2018, 9570 km on it only 14k ,Thanks for all you do ,Cheers to all .
That is a nice bike for 16k, people always want a new one, After my divorce I had to sell my softail, I recently bought a 2002 roadking, the thing is awesome. You are right, the Harley touring bikes are nimble, I can whip through turns pretty good with a 22 year old bike, I am sure the newer ones can do it a lot better.
I purchased my first new Harley, flht Electra Glide standard after owning three used prior to April 2021. Sticker price of $18,999 USD allowed for upgrading to a screaming eagle stage 2 and replacing substandard factory parts such as suspension, clutch, cable adjuster, intake manifold, handlebars. Harley-Davidson could produce entry level heavy touring bikes every year as they proved it with this model. Why do they cancel models that Johnny wants? Apparently the answer is install an inept governing board and a clown for the CEO. Rip HD.
Agree the Electra glide should never have been cancelled. My bro has a black Twin Cam 88 Carby model and it still goes great. They are very rare to find now where I live. Ps I like riding up the highway on it. Such a great Harley bagger.
Jerry, love your Challenger T/A! How many miles do you have on it?
I just bought the twin to it, only a 6 spd manual. Happy riding!

That's a good deal, just bought a 21 Electra Glide Standard w/ABS for $17,500 on 5/16/24 had 9200 mi. from my local HD dealer. Wish I had seen this first. Thanks Jerry
That's my bike. I own a '22 model. That 107 has more power and tork than I'll ever use, it's no slouch. Couldn't be happier!

I fall into the "don't want to pay that much" group, so I looked around and ended up with a20 year old road king 100 anniversary screaming eagle edition that had been owned by a certified harley technician. My wife found herself an older softail for a great price that needed a little work, which was done by our local dealer. Less than 20k for both, including the work from the dealer. We love the bikes!
You’re totally right! I don’t understand why they got rid of it. It’d sell well now that times are harder for pretty much the whole world.
Getting rid of entry level bikes is the wrong direction harley. Why did they make themselves a symbol?
