Indeed, someone didn't do their homework before making a baseless comment. Harley keeps an engine design around for many years longer than other companies which adds to it's reliability stats (time is part of reliability statistics) and it's big bore cylinders produce a hefty amount of torque. Torque is arguably the only number that means anything power-wise. A heavy haul truck will typically have about 425 horsepower, way less than some modified/higher-end sports cars, but the 1850 ft-lb of torque the heavy haul truck has means it can pull weight that the high horsepower sports cars can't.

@@killer2600 "Produce a hefty amount of torque"...Do you mean the 101 ft-lbs the M8 makes even though its a 107 cubic inches haha. Ive got a twin-cam, evo, and a shovel, Harleys have never made any kind of power and if you think they do this conversation isn't worth having...

In the early 80's when Harley was struggling financially, they were trying to reinvent themselves and find better way of manufacturing.
Harley asked Honda, who had been manufacturing motorcycles for several year in Marysville, Ohio if they could visit and observe Honda's motorcycle manufacturing process.
Harley engineers were very impressed with the Honda processes and went back and reinvented their manufacturing processes.
One of the technical magazines published an article about Harley's Jelley Bean production method. From that article you tell Honda had helped the in many ways.

Yes- Harley took the Japanese JIT system and customized it for their specific needs- called it MAN (Materials As Needed). This, along with finally developing an engine that didn't need a top end job after 10,000 miles and didn't leak oil all over the driveway; helped Harley-Davidson become profitable and sustainable. Also, let's not forget- the US government legislated extra tariffs on foreign motorcycles 750cc or higher.

It means they're Bikers...their passion to ride isn't limited to one brand. The parts on a Harley come from all over the world, not just the USA. If all the components were made here the motorcycles would cost more than double their current price. Most of the aftermarket parts come from China...even Jap bikes are built here in the USA. It's a matter of economics. I've ridden almost every brand except Russian made bikes only because I can't find them as easy as the others. They all offer a unique experience that Bikers should embrace. It'll make you appreciate what you ride even more...

Still have my built '86 Guzzi LeMans and recently bought a Road Glide Ultra. Love it. My go-fast days are behind me and I used the LeMans as a sport-tourer. It was time to put away the tank bag, soft saddlebags, clip-ons and rearsets and enjoy traveling backroads in comfort. Horses for courses. Can't beat the HD aftermarket support either.
