This is so refreshing compared to other videos of guys yelling with loud hip hop music in the background over sped up footage
A little less talk and more action...that’s what we need in this world.
A little less conversation and a little more action please
@@chrisreardon7185 Let's get on down to the main attraction witha little less talk, and a LOT more action.
Mr Subaru is the good son taking care of moms car problems. I’ll bet she’s beaming with pride knowing you are near by. I’d do that for my mom too.
Less thinking like a engineer and more doing like a mechanic like I always say
This is one of the best videos ever on RUclips. Just sayin. Straight to the point. No frills. Exactly what everyone needs to get the job done. Beautiful. DIY youtubers need to watch and learn from this.
I dont think my chain and gaskets, pumps, clutch, etc have been changed in over 300,000 km but looking at this is asmr therapy. Yesterday I road tested it by burning off one of those new model range rovers who was tryna to tail gate. Dropped into third red lined the 25EJ and very quickly he was very small in the rear view mirror hehe
Love it!
Holy Crap, 6 years ago! I've done mild work on Subarus so during the time I'm not wrenching or schooling I enjoy learning. Thanks for the attention to detail, and all you do. Keep it up man!
I use 4 - 12" long sections of 8mm threaded rod as a guide to reinstalling the front cover. Simply thread the rods into the block then slide the front cover on. The cover will always align perfectly and you won't need to re-apply Fuji Bond in places that were smeared.
That's a really good idea, nice!
Wow. This is simply fantastic. It's obviously very easy with a little care and attention to detail. No longer afraid of this job. Thanks for contributing.
Glad to help.
Holy crap dude. I loved the amount of detail in the video. Honestly one of the best tutorials I’ve seen in a look time. You didn’t miss a beat.
Thank you. Glad you enjoyed the video. 👍🏻
Help my 06 tribeca b died when I was going up an incline it started to hesitate so I pulled over and called a tow took to the local mechanic after 30 days he couldn't diagnose so a back yard mechanic tried too start but it sounded odd
Thank you so much for not putting inane music in background. Can just watch and learn. So good.Well done.
Thank you. 👍🏻
after watching this video for the past 6 months, I finally tackled this. My car was making horrible rattling sound at idle once warm, sound was coming from timing area. Replaced all guides and tensioners, and sound gone! The guides seemed fine, so probably could of left alone, but I had them so went ahead. Assuming it was ultimately the tensioner, but not sure. None the less this video was awesome to follow while doing! Keep them coming, not many H6 videos out there, maybe spark plugs? :)
Mine is making that same sound (2006 Tribeca B9 ((EZ30DBL1GB))143K miles). Thinking about doing this and wondering if you replaced the chains and water pump when you were in there (or did you just replace guides and tensioners)? Also did you leave your engine in or pull it out? I am just a normal dude (not a mechanic with no engine lift) but with this amazing video I know I could do this job.... in fact after this video I think I prefer to do this the right way instead of trusting an overworked shop employee that may rush it
I have an H6 spark plug video. Search the channel. 👍🏻 Glad the video helped you.
@@bubbasreviews5295 I replaced everything with the chain (both chains, guide, tensioners, etc...). I opted not to mess with water pump to save in expense (all those timing components was some $600). Engine was left in car, all was done with car on ramps, just had to remove radiator. Think the Tribeca might have a little more room though, not positive on that. Hardest part for me was removing crankshaft pulley bolt. No room to get impact, and no real way to bind engine from rotating. I ended up using, in my honest opinion, an extremely dangerous technique which involves a breaker bar and bumping the starter, all details I'll give on that. After that bolt was broke free, rest of job was walk in park. Just make sure each bolt head is free from any crud that prevents the socket head from fully seating inside the bolt. Also, all was done with the accessories in place like alternator and such, no need to mess with any of them.
@@TheDarkCutlass Hahaha, not that dangerous, done that myself with fuel pump fuse pulled and I crank the car for 5 sec making sure it won't start.
@@Align700nitro well that's the smarter way of doing it that didn't cross my mind lol
This is the best "how to" video ever... no BS talking and just great filming and Such nice garage ASMR. Thanks for the video!
You're welcome. Glad you enjoyed the video. 👍🏻

ASMR Subaru engine repair. Great video. I've viewed your other videos to help me repair my Subie.
+paul carlsen thanks. Glad to help.
You were right about removing upper hose of radiator in order to remove front cover.
I checked it on my subaru with fb25, it can be done without removing the hose but only removing. However when it come down to putting back it on that can spell huge pain in the back.
Quality image, great angles, like the written notes. You worked hard. I could hear the birds chirping outside when you were starting then crickets "cricketing" late in the night when you reassembled. Don't own a Subaru, never touched an engine, but watched the whole thing; I'm a mechanic now LOL
Glad you enjoyed the video. 👍🏻
Thank you for posting this. The dealership is trying to sell me a new timing chain, cam gears, idler + labor for $3,000 while doing the water pump, thinking I'm going to fall for their nonsense.
You get the video of the year award. 2016. Nice job

Thanks! I've done Subaru timing belts and water pumps. It's only a matter of time until I have to do this.
That's one hell of a timing chain arrangement. I've changed chains, but nothing like this. I've heard the GM V6 is really special and a lot of them are going bad.
The 3.6 chevy dohc motor I've done couple of timing chains and motors chain came loose bent valves and spit rocker arms out not bad to do. I suggest doing timing chains on the 3.6 with it out of vehicle
59 timing cover bolts and the Mfer still leaks 😂😂
Great work on this production! I watched it a few times before tackling an EZ30R out of a 2006 B9 Tribeca. However, I also decided to buy a workshop manual, and the procedure shown in this video does not match the factory manual steps. Maybe Subaru changed something when they went from the D to the R...... although they sure look damnear identical other than cam shaft pulleys. The manual shows that the crank pulley must be temporarily rotated 90° CCW before installing the inner (left) chain, in order to properly align the LH and RH cam shaft sprockets to the specified angles of 15° and 40°, respectively. I thought I would post this in case someone with a B9 is using this video for reference.
This is for the EZ30D phase I engine. The EZ30D phase II engine, that you have, is different. The R is a vehicle trim, not an engine code.
My friend and me used this instruction to remove and install timing chain and tensioners. Very informative thank you so much from Kazakhstan.
+Denis Awol glad to help!
Probably the best instructional videos out there for this engine! Great job on it and thanks for the help
Aco
I wasn’t aware the EZ30 was also prone the H/G failures.. either way, I’ll love to own an H6 3.0 Outback in the no so distant future. Thank you for another masterful video Sir!
59 bolts on the timing chain cover, wow. Not to mention that's one hell of a torque order for those. LOL
Great video, thanks. FYI the Subaru manual says to torque the crank pulley bolt to 131 ft/lbs.
Thanks. Mitchell on demand doesn't always get it right. Lol
Fantastic video, thanks. The front cover looks as if it was organically grown, not cast.
and when it's removed ! WoW that's some engineering
Hahahahahaha, over-engineering! LOL
I hate the way they made this
One of the best "how to" I have ever watched. I will be doing this myself soon, hope to see a head gasket one soon.
+David Koetsch glad you enjoyed the video. I've been planning an H6 head gasket video for about 2 years. Just haven't had the time to get around to filming it, unfortunately.
MrSubaru1387 Sure would be helpful if you get to it within the next month. haha
It quickly makes a timing belt seem like a brilliant idea.
Lorrin Barth exactly what I was thinking. Always wondered why go for belt if you can have chain, but this video made me realise.
They both equally suck. On 15 cars I have only had (1) chain fail & it was the guide. The mechanic reused all the sprockets & the chain! Maybe that was a bad idea. Never had a belt break tho!
Just obtained a Subaru 2008 with a 3.6 Tribeca and a watched your video just to learn . little knowledge of the motor . excellent excellent job great video thank you
Damn this was satisfying to watch!
Glad you enjoyed.
absolutely , one of the better instructional videos I have watched , very informative . and concise .

I'm a 6 year Subaru senior Master finally doing one of these beast not bad
I have an oil leak and need to go through this process. This video gave me a visual on top of having the service manual. Great video, thanks for sharing!
You're very welcome. 👍🏻
@@MrSubaru1387 I have the EZ36 engine. Would the procedure here be identical if not similar.
It's very similar. The EZ36D does have AVCS, which is the main difference, also has 3 chains rather than 2.
That’s why they call him Mr.Subaru. The one and only!
Water pump went on my 2006 H6 3.0, 285k's, all good now + the oil Leaks you have mentioned in another Video !
Did I just find the best ASMR channel??
I have never worked on a Subaru but this video is so detailed I would feel very comfortable doing this job. Great video, also surprised by the non use of impact sockets lol just giving you a hard time, great video
the first time I saw crankshaft pulley bolt having a cover .. the bolt looks good with no rust and dirt
90s engineering with longevity and serviceability in mind. Things were not made to be thrown away.
Your replying to my comment shows me how much of a Gentleman You are because,I didn’t know about the external ...... I am now a subscriber and look forward to your notification. Thank You!
Thank you for the great video I have a 13 Legacy with the EZ36 I change the oil every 5,000 and run Mobil 1 5-30 syn.
Thank you so much for this video, it has helped me identify each part for my recently bought subaru 01 ll bean. It has a noise in the timing chain case and I've bean slowly replacing parts. So far I replaced a broken upper left hand guide and the mouse is still there so now I am replacing both tensioners both chains and the water pump. That should solve the noise and make it so I can finally drive my new car
Thank you for the attention to detail and having all part numbers listed 👍 just saved me a lot of time and money.
Best camera work ive ever seen! And thank you for not playing any terrible music or yapping about your breakfast. Subscribing rn.
The cover of 1000 bolts :-D
You can only hope that they are not all rusted ;-)
Great video, great footage. Thanks for the ASMR.
Glad you enjoyed it.
Work perfect !!! Congratulation !!
subaru really wanted to make sure that timing cover wasn't going anywhere lol
+Fox Mense that they did. Haha
Lol ya a little bit of overkill I'd agree
Originally, they only used zip ties and at freeway speeds the cover would fly off!
hail zip tie held timing covers! 10k miles and strong on 93 legacy ;)
Not over kill they had to so chains dont jump rubber blets are much safer. If a chain jumps it fuckes up every pully and you crank too. Force of that chain would tear up whole side of the block and could cause a crack in block. This not a since case of automotive history of rubber belt doing such dmg. Just saying old engines are much safer to tune for horsepower.
Thanks for your help. I found an easy way to compress the tensioners. Use a valve lapping suction cup tool so you can push and twist at the same time with your pin facing up and it will literally fall into the hole in the plunger. Put the tensioner against something solid like your workbench vise.
Nice video.. your snapon delaer must be living a very comfortable life! Lol
loved it thank you, cant wait for the h6 head gasket replacement video.
+just browsing glad you enjoyed it.
Even after I aligned the dots to the chain I now get p0028 cam to crank correlation and I have to do all over . Us there a trick to getting the intake cam gears positioned or do they automatically line up when there us no oil pressure?
I dont even own a subie and I LOVED watching this. No talk just work :)
Glad you enjoyed the video.
Muy buen vídeo, muy explicito.
Got a question for you Mr. Subaru: I have a. 2010 forester X with 250000 miles.. drives great, shifts great.. automatic 4eat throws a p0741 code when in 4 gear driving up an incline.. check engine, abs, traction cruise lights come on… still drives “fine” after that. What would you do? Replace the torque converter solenoid..replace tranny.. or sell?
What mileage do you recommend changing the water pump?
Do you need to drop the oil to remove the front housing? I have a leak at the base.
Rewatching this to see the tension exerted by the tensioners... been hearing 2 people throw around a bike chain for a while and today I got a camshaft position sensor code... I have a bad feeling my sensor is not bad.
How much was the timing chain kit for the EZ30
nice vid keep up the good vid.
+Cheng Yang thank you
Question, when installing the heads and following the torque sequence, does it matter what tempature the engine is at- meaning inside a 80F shop vs a 40F shop? I will make sur ethe head and block are the same temp, but courious on your thoughts on the headgasket bonding in cold temps vs warm
Great video, thats what makes Subaru a Subaru
Buena foto, Fantasma del Tren.
Thank you for this great video. I KNOW I could do this but the hell of getting that huge ass cover back on scares me to death. I've done differentials and transmission pans numerous times but maneuvering that thing in the cramped engine compartment- sheesh.
did you do it yet and was it scary?
Great video ,just did mine ,I forgot to change the seal tho can you get it done without removing the casing ?
Timing chains are typically better but the internal water pump, 59 cover bolts, added complication for water pump replacement, mile long timing chains, mile long timing cover leaks make the old timing belt design better and more user friendly in my opinion. Very good how to video though! Thank you!
Please help asap! In doing the water pump i unalinged one of the cam shaft conected to the valves undoing the right chain. Then i just moved the cam shaft dial back. Now it is alinges. But can i still see problem or is there anything i can cheack before turning it
at 8:40 when your removing the timing chain I can see the upper LH camshaft gear move...
will it matter if after i done everything i cranked it to see if everything lined up but then the coloured chains are in the right spot but the arrows are point too
Great video! Thank you! Quick question is the FB25 in a 2013 forester exactly the same?
It's somewhat similar, in that it uses a timing chain. That's about it though.
Oh! You doing Great work!!:)
Hi thanks for the video. I was wondering if the timing chain tensioners are ratchet type or hydraulic type.
Great video, this helped me write down the necesarry steps for an asignment for school (had to do it on an EZ60 boxer tho)
Hi MrSubaru, I'm new to your channel. I have found your video presentations very informative. I own a 2016 Subaru WRX Limited with a CVT and it just reached the 60,000 mile marker. I would like to start doing my own oil changes and tire rotations myself due to running into repeated issues when I took my car to the local Subaru dealership for service. I have a question. Do you think if I used jack stands with the secondary locking pins to do my own oil change and tire rotation, it would mess the car's frame up in terms of warping it since it not a lift?
Where do you get your gloves from? They look super durable! Thank you for the timing set tutorial. Nice work!

How much would it cost to have someone do the work? Thanks for this top notch video,You are a hell of a good teacher!!! (Curious to know how much I would save doing it myself.)
I love this video man, great channel!
Thanks!
You did a great work! Many thanks for your HELP-VIDEO and Tutorial)
Great tutorial video i'm going to do my car just by following your instructions, are you going to do the Head Gasket on it, I need to do my HG and I will love to see how your video on it. Thanks
putting mine back together soon, what's everyone's fav timing chain kit manufacture I never want to do this job again
NICE WORK

I came for the info, I stayed for the calming engine ASMR video
I have a 2013 Crosstrek Limited, at what suggested mileage should I replace the cam chains and chain guides, please?
Great work!
Thanks!
OK, would you think loctite is a good idea or am I just over thinking this?
We have a 2014 subaru outback limited. They Recently did a head gasket job at a shop. One of the timing chian tensioners was bad so it got replaced with new OEM one. Now the engine does a ticking/knocking sound off the passenger side area. Any ideas?
Great video!!...Thanks for the help man!
No problem, glad to help.
MrSubaru1387 hey man do you have any info on the valve tick on these motors ? i have a 01 h6 with a little valve tick that has me worried any advice ?
+Daniel Carroll are you sure it is valve tick? Could be the injectors you are hearing, or possibly some timing chain/guide noise?
MrSubaru1387 thanks for answering . my mechanic told me it was a valvue tick and ran bg treatment thru it . it mostly went away it only happens maybe twice a week a sound like a fan hitting plastic when i first pull off. its a h6 with 80k miles . ive read they have this problem and have watched videos with lifter tick and it sound the exact sams
Daniel Carroll I did an oil change with a different brand a while ago,(I won’t mention the brand but I assure you, it was a good one)and after that oil change, lots of lifters started to tick. After a week and no improvement, replace this oil for my original one and that solved the tick problem. Later in time, a mechanic told me that some oil have too much detergent that could provoke this problem.
I've dismantled everything. I can't find a timing kit for this. Any ideas? Found timing chains separate but not tensioners, gaskets, guides, etc
+Paul Smithers subaruparts.com there is no kit avaliable. OEM is my only recommendation.
That is quite the set up. Man and that cover. But what tool do you recommend to install camshaft seals in an EG33?
Love your videos 😊 its so mutch help to watch these 😊 I have problem whit my Tribeca it’s get to hot at low engine speed and the heater blows cold and if I rew or make the engine go to 3000 or higher then it’s go back to normal. Have change the termostad ass week and its to hard to bleed the system so I think is the water pump. 😢
Seemed like some of those bolts might have had thread locker. Is thread locker recommended for any of this re-assembly?
Great video thank!, I just wanted to know if I need to do this after I stupidly hand cranked the harmonic balancer counter-clockwise about 1 revolution. I hadn't touched the timing belt just was changing the HB. I used the belt method to take it off but belt was a bit long. Any help would be much appreciated. I'm trying to avoid taking the timing cover off
What are your thoughts on the design change to use a timing chain vs the old timing belt? Is the old water pump and timing belt easier? I thought timing chains are meant to last MUCH longer, having to go through this procedure just for a water pump is more tedious no?
@@tooltime9260 oof, that sounds silly
Thank you very much appreciate you man cause of this video I saved some money and did it my self thanks for all the details video was very helpful 💯🙇🏼♂️
Any tips on getting the plunger back into the tensioners? Looks like a twist and squeeze method.
Very good, amazing, the best youtuber, show the reality, att work.
The plunger fell out of my tensioner, will it be okay?
I was so so urge to know this Subaru model, internal organs. Thanks a lot mate.
I can't be the only one disappointed that the Subaru engineer didn't add one more bolt to the timing chain cover.
They should have added 10 more bolts!
Hey man, I just purchased a 2006 legacy outback 3.0r with 225k miles on it. I need to replace the timing chains and tensioners, does the same tutorial applies to an 06 engine? And are all the parts the same? Meaning the parts you listed in the description fit in a 2006 3.0r engine. Thank you in advance.
Great video! I am working on my son's 1st car. I was sealing the timing cover because of oil leak for mechanical fitness. The Harmonic balance was not on the woodruff key porperly and broke the Key. Now I need to remove the timing chains to remove the sprocket to get to the key. I can not find anything for timing on a 2012 forester FB25. Is there something you can send or explain to avoid future mistakes. lol
You look like my neighbor.same cars and you both have a passion for subie
Is there any tensioners or guides that should be replaced?
Are you ever going to make the head gasket replacement videos?
You did a very good job sir. Very nice to watch 👍
Glad you enjoyed the video. 👍🏻
