    doing one of these motors right now, but for a rear timing cover leak, things puking oil out of either the oring behind the dual chain idler pulley bolt hole, or bottom of the water pump. Absolute insane design, combination of rubber orings and liquid gasket on the rear of the cover too, plus sprockets need to come off along with all the timing get and oil pump cover plate :|

    Can I ask, where would I find the torque settings on all the bolts for the front and rear timing covers? I have a leak behind the rear cover and had to take it all off.

      Oh dear that sounds fun! There’s a site called JDMFSM.info they have online service manuals available and the procedure for changing the timing chains etc.

    What kind of noise was it? Whining, ticking, knocking?

    • @ExperimentalHV
      @ExperimentalHV  Год назад +1

      Hard to say, it was a sort of a rattle noise which was loud when listening in the oil filler.

    • @mrnicktoyou
      @mrnicktoyou Год назад

      Mine was making a noise too, you could mildly hear the chain scraping on the chain guide if you put your head under the car while the engine was running. I opened it up and the left chain tensioner had failed and the chain was loose. Just waiting on new parts now.

    Is this the one with variable cam timing ?

  • @sahilsangha7746
    @sahilsangha7746 Год назад

    Worst chain covers i have ever worked on i have a legacy 3.0 and my timing chaun tensions got loose and my timing chain slipped so i tried opening the cover more then half of the bolts were rounded out so i had to literally weld or use a hammer and a chizel to cut the bolts out and my engine was still in the car so not like there was much space it took me 7 hours straight just to open up the timing plate 🙅‍♂️

    I see that you also replaced the chain-guides...
    Was there a plastics-only repair kit, or did you replace them with the aluminium brackets?
    I got a rattling noise when the engine warmed up. when it was cold, i had absolutle no noise. rest of the engine was running like a swiss clock. I uploaded my rattling sound to my channel...
    ruclips.net/video/MQ12iDS5k58/видео.html
    I heard about 3 main reasons, the noise can come from: water pump, chain tensioner, variable cam adjuster
    now i said, that i'll replace everything, that can be the reason. but i think it's not the cam adjuster...

    • @ExperimentalHV
      @ExperimentalHV  Год назад

      Damn that’s a noise! I was worried until you revved it, still concerned though. How’s the oil pressure? Hopefully once the timing cover is off your issue will identify itself and it’s not something else. I put all the parts in my cart individually from PartSouq, just plastic guides.
      Try posting your vid up for the FB group: “EG33/EZ30 swaps /H6 parts Australia”

      @@ExperimentalHV i completely disassembled the timing chain section but didn't find anything obvious... i think the chain tensioner was kind of stuck and the chain was rattling in the lower left guide near the water pump. But i think after nearly 20 years and 220k km, i can give the car a whole new timing setup.
      BUT... i can't find the plastic guides alone. Check this part for example: partsouqDOTcom/assets/tesseract/assets/partsimages/Subaru/13141AA001.jpg
      (.for DOT in the link, seems YT doesn't want me to post links...)
      You only get the black plastic part WITH the aluminium part. The plastic part can be separated and changed easily... but i can't find that plastic part alone... do i really have to buy every chain-guide all together? would be unnecessary IMHO....

      @@davidsharp922 Not too bad really if you can get a decent used one. We ran a tired EZ30 during a 24hr lemons race, did pretty well. Ran this engine for the 12hr 👌. Few mods like better radiator and a 6 speed gearbox (not a 5 speed).
