And that's why today we still, well maybe many of us refer to belts as a "Fan Belt"...... But on some of these older and obsolete models of engines they incorporate so many different engineering designs in their own or sometimes borrowed means of doing certain things. Like the Generator/water-pump combinations are found on many different models across the board, the optional oil can on the firewall, another feature that was borrowed from engine's which featured exposed lifters, push rods and rocker arms. As this engine appears to be a L head or Flat head valve train design, which mostly everything is contained within the crankcase system and is sealed in as well as splash or sometimes even pressurized lubrication was done by the engine itself. But either way theres no lacking of lubrication points on such a vehicle that requires a mandatory regiment of oil or a heavy grease to keep things moving smoothly. I learned something new today and I thank you Jay for finding out so much about the life and outcome of the famous Rickenbacher automobile, I only knew the mans flight history and his experiences during WW1. So thank you for doing what you're doing here Jay, its been a great and fun ways of learning much more information about the common to obscure vehicles, their engineering feats weather positive or negative and they're beginnings to their demise for way too many innovative ideas! ❤😊 Keep em coming And we'll be here to help, share and all learn something new or forgotten about.

Humm.. Rickenbacker made his name as a race driver and then became even more famous as flyer so obviously flying was his first love. After the car business he became the owner and president of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway until he sold it in 1945 to Tony Hulman. Yes, from 1938 to 1959 he was the president of Eastern Airlines and was the Chairman of the Board until 1963. There was some talk that his sale of Indianapolis Motor Speedway was done to quiet investor worries that he was not taking the airline business as seriously as he should. For most of his life he was a regular visitor to the speedway and almost all the racers remember a visit by Capt. Eddie, but it's safe to say flying was his first love. The front flywheel was an early version of what has become better known as an harmonic balancer, a regular part of almost all modern engines.
3:49 Agreeing that two flywheels would have a "smoothing" effect, I would also think it would inhibit "peppiness," since there would more matter to change speed.
