Magnificent automobile! Eddie Rickenbacker was a race car driver prior to his becoming the World War I flying hero.

Glad I watched this video. Never heard of a Rickenbacker. I may put this car in the top 5 GOAT cars of all time. The reproduction Batmobile by the man in Ohio (The TV Show Batmobile, not the movie) gets my #1 GOAT award. This car is a masterpiece in many aspects. Love how he used wood to make those beautiful bumpers with copper trim. What a work of art. The detail on this entire car is astounding. Big feature is that plaque under the hood giving specific timing and maintenance instructions. Some new Ford valve covers posted the timing instructions on the covers, but this plaque is concise and shows the manufacturer cared about the customer. Love the Bosch magneto equipment, and love those added glass wind baffles on the doors, to help deflect wind when the windows are rolled down. Never seen that feature on any other car.
This must have been a very expensive car in it's day, probably way beyond the affordability of the average buyer. Much of the instrumentation looks quite modern. That God for analog gauges over the new digital readouts that you have to squint your eyes to see.

@@loucostabile Thanks for the very nice reply Lou. I was thinking about the copper on this Rickenbacker. They must be coating the copper with something to keep it looking that bright. I have 2" copper dual exhaust pipes on one of my cars, and I can't even keep the end of the pipes looking bright.

Nice to see such a rare and beautiful antique. Specially if you know the story of "Captain Eddie". Lou noticed a hat icon on the taillight (there's another over the radiator trim) - but didn't seem to recognize it's significance. That's the insignia of the famous American WWI "Hat In the Ring" Squadron, the one he served and commanded. That sure removes any doubt who this car belonged to - Capt. Eddie, my favorite American.

They did have some info wrong. Most of his racing years were before the war. Not after. Also, he didn't found Eastern Airlines. He bought it and turned it into a multi-million dollar corporation.

The 94th Aero Squadron was Rickenbacker's Squadron which he commander late in the war.

Would there have been any advantages to having all these copper parts?
I heard this model mentioned in a twilight zone episode and had to see it. Thank you for sharing it with us.

Hi, No advantage I'm aware of using copper, so it appears to be used for a "different look" to catch attention, and years later, it still does just that. Glad you enjoyed the video. Lou

This pre-Depression era was a real high point for American cars. They were still simple enough that somebody with unique ideas like Eddie Rickenbacker could not only have a custom-made personal car, he could even start his own car company. After WW II, car making became a big business and only big corporations could participate, the bigger the better. Tooling became prohibitively expensive for the smaller companies. Guys with unique ideas had to be satisfied with creating one-off hot rods, low riders and customs by cutting up old cars and reworking them.

This company went out of business in 1927 before the beginning of the Great Depression. Dozens of small American automotive companies came and went during the Teens and Twenties. The public was fickle so the market was very competitive. Imagine trying to find spare parts or proper servicing for a Rickenbacker outside of a few major cities at that time.

5/11/18 . Seen a 1922 Rickenbacker today . It was in mint condition with chrome airplane on the radiator similar to the one on this video . Very neat old car . This as in Monroe Twp. N. J.

Was the 1922 Rickenbacker you saw a Touring model?
The Rickenbacker Car Club has a 1922 Touring listed as being in NJ so I was wondering if it was the same car.
If it was not a red Touring please let me know what the car was and if possible who owns it so I can have the club update the roster.
Other than the one I own, I have only seen 3 other Rickenbacker cars in person.
I would love to see the Rickenbacker Super Sport in person.

There existed a large income disparity among social classes during the Roaring Twenties. Most families were uneducated, working class, and struggled to save enough money to buy a new Ford Model T touring car for $300. This rare and very expensive car was for the young, showy, and privileged rich man.

I'm not to certain this was Eddie's personal auto. I read somewhere that this 1926 was copper plated for the NY car show.

Correction on the narrative, Eddie was racing cars before the war, not after it. He served as General Pershing's driver as a sergeant. He learned to fly and became a Lieutenant. He finished the war as a Captain and the commander of the 94th Aero Squadron, the "Hat in the Ring" leading it in the most kills, missions and time flying as any other American Aero Squadron during the war. He did not found Eastern Airlines, he bought it with help from financiers for $3.5 million dollars from GM in 1937 or 1938. He survived a plane crash before WWII and during WWII was set adrift in the Pacific ocean for 24 days. Anyway in twenties he founded Rickenbacker Car Company. What an incredible guy, all with a 7th grade education.
