On "My Car Story" we're in Chicago IL at The Klairmont Kollections museum on 11-9-15.
We're looking at a 1934 Hupmobile Aerodynamic. The Car has an advanced design, and this one has a fantastic restoration. I find the more I look at this car, the more interesting it becomes.

My father had a furniture store in Delray Beach, one customer was a Mr. Hupp, we were delivering some furniture to him. He had a condo in Boca, I noticed a framed, large photo of the Huppmobile plant. He was Hupp's son. He tipped us well, and poured us a drink of whiskey, for the road. (In those days, no big deal). It's one of those memories I've always thought was cool.

A Stunning car! this is the presentation what i've looking for. He is such a Professional and a gentleman, Hats off to him. I like the way he describe his background. My favorite color. The car had a Stunning restoration, Beautiful! Spacious trunk. I like the intricate detail of the body hood, yeah! you're right 'like a bat' lol I love the chrome. Andrew seems like a great and humble person.
Hi Vern, Glad to read you think this is "A Stunning car!". Happy to read you enjoy Andrew sharing this one with us :-) Lou
From Australia. Gorgeous looking Vee-Hickle. Thanks for showing. Folks who restore and maintain these old cars are doing a huge service to the community.
Hi Chris Hamilton from Australia. Glad to read you enjoy the looks of this car :-) Hope you see many more cars on this RUclips Channel you enjoy. Regarding showing the video, you're welcome, Lou
What a nicely made car. It looks like that coachwork was very expensive, and in the depression era that was often the formula for failure. Lots of makes were lost during that decade. The engine maybe not so much. They still stuck to the flathead design, but the styling is awesome.
Hi Dave B, Happy to read you appreciate this car :-) Thank you for viewing, sharing and I believe you're going to see many more cars on this Channel you'll enjoy. Hope you Subscribe, and hit the "bell" so you can see all the cars when they are uploaded on this RUclips Channel, Lou
Wow! Never heard of this! Definitely my favorite by far on your channel! So beautiful and that color! Just perfect! Thank you 😊
Hi tinker1148, Happy to share this car with you :-) Glad to read this one is your favorite on the Channel! You're welcome, Lou
HUMPMOBILE - One of the most attractive mid-30s automobiles. Your friend Andrew did a fine job. And you sir did another fine vid
Hi Steven, Happy to read "One of the most attractive mid-30s automobiles" :-) Appreciate your kind words on the video, Lou
I had heard of Hupmobile when I was a kid back in the 60s, although I had only seen various years in books. About 1995 I saw one in the back of a body shop and noticed it because it had a split rear window (smaller then yours) similar to an early Volkswagen Beetle, which is why I noticed it. Very similar body to yours, but not sure what years it was. I just thought it was a really great body design and special look and I was amazed when I was told it was a Hupmobile. Yours is beautiful, it has an almost subdued Art Deco feel and look, while being Modernist. Most people today still don't know about these beautiful cars.
Glad you are enjoying cars on this RUclips Channel. Hope you see many more cars you'll enjoy GeneDJ2, Lou
Was that really a color in the early 30's? It's really beautiful. There was a lot of streamlining among car companies circa 33-36 or so. This wonderful design with it's wrap around windshield forerunner, the Studebaker designed and built 33 Pierce Silver Arrow, and President Land Cruiser. The Chrysler Airflows. All were rejected by the General public who were not ready for advanced design. It would be after WWII before streamlining really took off again.
Hi Neil, I think this was the color, however maybe a Viewer with knowledge can share. Here is the Pierce Silver Arrow ruclips.net/video/90CYVFnGeoc/видео.html & here is the Airflow ruclips.net/video/V0odZjDfKCw/видео.html
This car is extraordinary and so are you both. Thank you
Thank you Michael for the kind comment :-) Lou
What a swell car. Look at how wide the front seat is! Only the same era Chrysler and DeSoto Airflow cars had a front seat this wide in that era. Great also that this is the Straight 8 version - there were two 6 cylinder Hupps in this era as well. The 8 made 115 horsepower, which was quite good for a 303 cubic inch engine in that era.
Hi Michael, Happy to read you enjoy this "swell car". Thank you for viewing and sharing your knowledge, Lou
Wow that's great
Hi Glenn, Happy to read you enjoy this car :-) Lou
I recall when these came out. Always liked Hupmobiles.
Happy to read you liked this car :-)
Swell Hupp, but one correction; the rear-mounted spare was standard on most cars, with side-mounts being the option, but they were not available on this car.

Another great episode Lou! Love these Hupps! There is one or two at the Pioneer Village Museum in Minden, Nebraska. All of the cars there are donated to the museum. They have several very rare cars including a Ford Model K. Most of the cars are in an unrestored condition. Some better than others, just the condition they were in when donated.
Hi packard5682, Thank you for the compliment, and glad you enjoyed the Hupp :-) Have not been to that museum, however thank you for the tip, and if my travels include that direction, I'll look forward to stopping in, Lou
My grandfather had a hupmobile dealership way back when.
Hi Ted, Happy to read this car brings back memories of your Grandfathers car :-) Thank you for viewing and sharing, Lou
Plug for the Klairmont Kollection: It IS open to the public, and thoroughly delightful, quirky museum, well worth seeing. I've been, but it's earmarked for a return visit! As for the Aerodynamic: sales flop, but ahead of its time. Two noted designers involved: Lowey and Northup - Lowey being the famous 'name' and involved in streamlining everything in the 30s (or rather his firm was). Not quite Airflow radical, but if you contrast this with say, a 34 Ford, you realize that it was ahead of its time (though not by so much, by 36 we'd moved full force into the potato era) Note the headlight/hood blend and then compare a late 90's Jag S Type, Merc E type and the Lexus GS
Hi Joe, Happy to read you've been there, and going to redo that :-) Thank you for viewing and sharing your knowledge. Hope you see many more cars on this RUclips Channel you enjoy. Please subscribe, and hit the "bell" so you can see all the cars when they are uploaded on this RUclips Channel, Lou
I'd love to see that thing tested in a modern wind tunnel for drag coefficient.
Hi Frank, It would probably do pretty well, Lou
What an amazing car! I think I read that Hupmobiles used the same engines as either the Bickle or REO Speedwagon fire engine company trucks.
Hi GRD62, Glad you enjoy this one and consider the car "amazing" :-) Lou
That's one terrific motor car!
Hi Rosella A Alm-Ahearn, Happy to read you enjoy this car :-) I like this one too. Hope you see many more cars on this RUclips Channel you'll enjoy, Lou
2:53 Here you have the shape and front feel of the Mercedes-Benz W 136!!! And this Mercedes Benz came 1936 with the exact same grill texture. 2 years after this Hupmobile!

This is a far better car for the money than a Mercedes.
Magnificent; major WOW factor, and a really nice find!!
Hi 1hugeturdsundae, Glad to receive a "WOW" from you :-) I like this one too, Lou
There was an elderly man named Mr. Lou Green residing in Grants Pass 20 years ago who had a Ford Model A salvage yard and he had a very restorable one of these exactly like this for sale and nobody wanted it but I imagine someone must have eventually purchased it because it was such an interesting car but then again it might still be there. If you're ever in Grants Pass you could ask around. I remember the ingenious ashtrays on either side of the rear seat that slid open from each of the outer arm rests.
Hi Very Good, Happy to read this car / video brings back memories of the car in Grants Pass :-) Thank you for viewing and sharing, Lou
I have a 1926 Hupmobile A series 6 cylinder.

I be known about Hupmobile since o was a young boy, but never seen this model. It’s absolutely beautiful!!!
I’d really like to know how many of these were sold, and about the mechanics. I believe begat was a straight 8 , and appeared to be a 3 speed trans.
Sure would love to own that thing.
Hi Mike, Happy to read you appreciate this car :-) Thank you for viewing, sharing and I believe you're going to see many more cars on this Channel you'll enjoy. Hope you Subscribe, and hit the "bell" so you can see all the cars when they are uploaded on this RUclips Channel, Lou
What a beautiful car with gorgeous green pearl paint. I found the front doors opening suicide and rear doors conventional very interesting. Many models, such as my 1941 Ford four door, was the opposite, with front doors convention and rear doors suicide.
Glad to read you enjoy this one Ellie Price :-) Hope you see many more cars on this RUclips Channel you'll enjoy, Lou
My Grandpa had one back in the 30s, I'm not sure what year, but he said it was one of the best he owned through his life.
Hi Sam Iam, Thank you for sharing details and thoughts your Grandpa had regarding this car, Lou
Never seen a Hupmobile before, very nice.
Hi Marten, Happy to share a car that's unseen before to you. Lou
Wow Lou that is really awesome thanks man...
Hi Martin Ihrck, Glad to receive a "Wow" from you :-) You're welcome, Lou
Way cool I never heard of one of these.
Glad you enjoy this one :-)
Styling was well ahead of it's time, not sure of this model, but think many hupps were 6 w/an 8 optional. Another good car make that didn't survive. One of many sadly.
Hi A. Lee Morris Jr., Thank you for viewing and sharing your knowledge. Hope you see many more cars on this RUclips Channel you enjoy. Please subscribe, and hit the "bell" so you can see all the cars when they are uploaded on this RUclips Channel, Lou
Don’t make a comment about something because Lou won’t ask you to explain. Even though he’s just filming car elements. I’m sure I’m not the only one who would like to hear more from these owners.
Hi B bo, I attempt to as the questions I think Viewers would like to know, and I'll do my best to let them talk more, Thank for the tip :-) Lou
Lou Costabile Hi Lou. I’m talking about the owners of the cars. Not the viewers. It’s all good.
Amazing curves, these thing were quality
I feel as if my name is included within the name of this vehicle.
Nice :-)
Great car and it was a four-door model!🤣
Happy to read you enjoy this 4 Door :-)
I'd heard of them - looks like an interesting place.
Hi Roger Alsop, I'm pretty sure they're open to the public on Thursday thru Saturday's from 10am - 4pm. Might want to check the website and call. Tell them I sent you, and enjoy! Lou klairmontkollections.com/
Cool made in Detroit.
• Cheers from The Detroit & Mackinac Railway 🚂
+trainroomgary Glad you've enjoyed the car. Take care, Lou
This car used to owned by the J&R museum in Rio Rancho, NM - too bad the public can’t see it anymore
Good news Sheik Antonio Von Peanut Butter! If you go to the description of this video you can see the website which on is open the public a few days a week. @@loucostabile your videos are okay- I come from decades of restoration experience- so I’m looking for more in depth information about the cars rather than a “oooh aaaah” session - I’m glad this Hupmobile went to nice place
I clearly recognize the Hupp's beauty and innovations.. even power... so why were they overlooked in WW II? There must have been a problem?
Hi Bad Axident, Happy to read you enjoy the looks of this car :-) Hmmm, not sure. Maybe a Viewer with knowledge can share, Lou
1) The Depression seriously hammered the independents. 2) In the 30s, just like the 70s, most people didn't want advanced futuristic styling. 3) Hupp was doing poorly by the mid decade, that scares many people, even today. They are scared that they will be buying a car with no resale value. 4) The all-new 38 models were more conventional looking, but still modern looking, but there was a very severe recession that year, and that killed car sales, especially for the independents. 5) Those poor sales made many people think that there was something wrong with the car, just as you wonder. 6) Hupp had been seriously harmed by one Archie Andrews in the middle of the decade. 7) Hupp tried to come out with a new model that was derived from the Coffin-nosed Cord, but the dies for that body were not suitable for mass-production, making it impossible for Hupp to produce anywhere near enough cars. After the war, Hupp teamed up with Henry J. Kaiser to produce the Frazier version of Henry's Kaiser, but ran out of money before enough cars had been sold to get some money back from their investment.
From the A post back it sorta looks like a 1941 Graham.
Hi Steven, Thank you for sharing, Lou
Love it!
+Jeff Hupp Any name relation to this car? Lou
+Jeff Hupp - Yes - though distant. My 4th great grandfather and their 2nd GG were brothers.....
+Jeff Hupp Very nice car, amazingly done for the day, you should be very proud, take care, Lou
+Lou Costabile - Thank you. Love your channel and content - really well done! I live in Detroit, and love all great car stuff - so keep up the great work!
+Jeff Hupp I'm having so much fun with the awesome cars I'm able to video. Thank you for your words of encouragement, Lou
Nice serial number.
Cars pretty good too.
There was an unrestored one of these for sale in Landrum, SC a few years back. I hope someone bought it, because anything that doesn't sell the dealer hot rods.
Edit: Actually, I think his was a 1938, so it lacked a lot of the unique aero features of this model.
Hope someone bought it too.
With the handful of these cars left I hope they did sell it to someone who kept it original, but with the challenges that involves for a pre-war marque with a very limited market, it is likely someone would just dump in a chevy and call it a day.
This car looks more modern than some cars from the 50's ...
Hi Anonymous Unknown, Happy to read you appreciate the design of this car :-) Thank you for viewing and sharing. Hope you Subscribe, and hit the "bell" so you can see all the cars when they are uploaded on this RUclips Channel, Lou
i own two artifacts from the old Hupmobile plant in Kansas City, Mo. from the Executive offices.
Cool!
nice car.
Hi Vasyl Magura, Glad you enjoyed this one :-) Hope you see many more on the Channel you'll enjoy, Lou
at 7.17 it looks like a modern spin on oil filter, but I must be wrong, that type of filter system did not appear until around the 50's [I think]
You're not wrong. Also 12 Volt wring with a Delco Alternator and an under dash mounted Ampmeter. It's been a bit bastardized and painted a terrible colour but......a driveable fun car to own...
Hi john brown, Thanks for viewing & sharing the details you see, Lou
Certainly more aerodynamic than a 1934 Buick or Nash but the 1934 Chrysler Airflow set the standard.
You're right, and I'll have to look for an Airflow for my Channel :-)
It does, but this car is better looking.
Nice color. Was this a stock color?
Hi Gerard, I like this color too. Not sure if it was stock, Lou
Not sure, but the Graham car of this era was available in a similar color, so it might be.
Nice car, would love to have learnt a bit about the engine, is that a straight 6 or 8?
they had both configurations for that model year, the 6 had something like 90HP and this one, an 8 115HP, so no slouches, in the buick upper middle tier of marques.
Continental built flathead straight 8.
Seems juankenon & Michael Miller shared the answer to your question.
It was a Straight 8, but there was a 6 cyl also.
Continental may have built it, but it was Hupp's design.
I have a 1934 Hupmobile 4 door ,black . It belonged to my late husband. I am looking for a value for this car as I need to sell it. I would appreciate any help you can give me.
Hi Joni, Happy to read you have a Hupmobile too :-) Thank you for viewing and sharing. Hope you see many cars on this Channel you enjoy! Please Subscribe, and hit the "bell" so you can see all the cars when they are uploaded on this RUclips Channel, Lou
I have no idea on values, and hoping a Viewer can share knowledge.
is it a hupmobile on superman no.1?
I think you might be right, and of course that one Superman is holding is green and not in as nice condition as this one :-)
So, is it Hupp or HUP? The VIN plate says Hupp and the brake light says Hupp, with 2 Ps, but its known as the HUPmobile. Why is that?
It's a Hupp.
The experts didn't know that the 1934 Aero-Dynamic was designed by Raymond Loewy for Hupmobile? Loewy was father of industrial design in America. Google his name kids, while you're drinking a bottle of Coca-Cola....
Hi charles1964, Thank you for viewing and sharing your knowledge. Hope you see many more cars on the Channel you'll enjoy, Lou
Interesting. I had to go back and look at this one again. :) I was just watching your vid of the 53 Sunbeam Talbot, which I found to be extremely dated for being 20 years newer than this Hupmobile. I was thinking you could have bought a new Studebaker Starlight in 1953, which certainly didn't come with a crank. Now I find Mr Loewy also designed the Hup, not to mention the Avanti. What a great designer!!
Pierce silver arrow
there appears to be a modern alternator on this 1934 engine @ 8 min 34 sec .
right-- a GM Delco alternator and also a spin-on oil filter ! Note the hokey white ceramic power resistor on the firewall, likely used to drop 12v to 6v or maybe for the ignition coil. This is an 8 cyl flathead, shows 8 wires out of the distributor.
Nice attention to details.
Waffle waffle waffle 2.50 minutes in and we still haven't seen the car yet !!!...everone wants to be a movie star ! pfffft !
Hi Bradley Goodchild, How about next time you try a helpful comments on something you've learned from your nutrition videos you like, and I'll video cars to share with people who like watching my Channel? Lou
Why doesn't the driver side hood around the grill and headlight line up the same way the passenger side does?
Hi Kielbasa Glen, Not sure and maybe a Viewer can share knowledge to your question. By the way, nice attention to details. Hope you see many more cars on this RUclips Channel you'll enjoy, Lou
I think it probably does but it may be a tight fit and they don't want to risk chipping the paint while it's parked indoors. I love this car.
Who made the motor was it a flat six?
Hi Denis, Not sure, and hoping a Viewer with knowledge can help, Lou
This is a straight 8, not a 6. No such thing as a 6 with 8 spark plugs, and it is an inline engine, not a flat engine. Flat engines are what the VW, Porsche, and the he Corvair used.
Continental made it, but it is a Hupp design.
Were these cars contemporary to the Chrysler/DeSoto AirFlow designs?
Yes.
Hi James, Thank you for viewing & sharing your knowledge, Lou
Yup, and I think this is the better looking of the two.
Mr. Andrew you sound and look like Seth Rogan!! Are you secretly his father? :)
:-)
I don't know what else to say but Wow I mean really wow Its beautiful
Happy to receive a "Wow" from you :-)
