My first exposure to this car was at a stoplight in Union NJ in 1976 on my way to school at Lincoln Tech. I was driving my '70 Super Bee when this thing pulled up next to me. I had never seen anything like it and for a second I thought it was the Batmobile. I had about 30 seconds to stare at this thing, but I was mesmerized by that roof. It wasn't till years later I saw a picture of this and realized what I had seen. This car is unreal, and I learned so much more about it from this video. Do us all a favor Lou and keep these videos coming!

A very very special car. I've only ever seen one, hidden away in a barn far out in the country, owned by an eccentric and reclusive Cadillac collector. There were other nice old Cadillacs in the garage, but this one was out in s barn, completely covered and i had to promise I'd never say a word about having seen it, which I didn't. It was stunning and in absolutely perfect shape. That was in 1987 and at that time i didn't even know that such a car existed. I had never before seen a stainless steel roof or suicide doors on a Cadillac. That was 37 years ago now and i still consuder it an unexpected thrill of a lifetime.

@@razvancalin6453I really don't. I'm a bit of an odd duck myself. At that time I had a 61 Fleetwood which I dearly loved and it was in nearly perfect shape but some odd part broke I can't remember now what it was and I searched and searched and couldn't find a source and I was at a car meet and I got overheard me asking another guy about it. And after we finish talking this third guy stepped up and said quietly I think I can help you. And I said okay.?? And he said but you must not tell how you found out. And that's when he said I know this eccentric old guy in the country I couldn't guarantee it, but I could almost tell you for sure he will have that part. And he told me where he lived which was about a hundred miles in the country. So he said this is his name and address and go to his house, do not call him or he will tell you not to come. And he said but once you get there he will be the nicest guy you have ever met. And if he wants to know how you found out you just say someone told you a long time ago but you can no longer remember who. And so I did as I was told and drove straight to the guy's house, he was about I would say 70 and he lived alone with his 90 year old mother. True to the guy's description he was just as nice as anyone could have ever been, in fact seem to enjoy the fact that I stopped by..
@@razvancalin6453he told me very specifically how to tell the repairman to install the park properly so that it would not be damaged and would work. We had a lovely time visiting and then at the end kind of on the spur of the moment is when he decided to show me the car in the barn. I took the part and it worked beautifully. The old guy told me to come back and he would help me anytime I had any further problems, except I never did. I didn't continue going to the car meetings even though I kept the car for many years. So I have no idea what happened to the guy or the collection. The guy seemed to be about 70-75 at the time and that was 37 years ago. He seemed to be a single man living with his mother, so God only knows what became of those lovely cars.

Lou, as a kid, me and my friend would get on a bus and go the annual auto show located in downtown Baltimore in the '50's. In 1957, he and I went to the show and saw something that was a wow moment. A midnight blue car with a stainless steel top. The interior was also impressive. I looked at the sticker price and commented to my buddy, " Any one paying THAT kind of money for a car is crazy!". Just remember, the price f a typical row house was around $9K. I'm now in my 80's and still remember this car!

Oh, this 1958 Cadillac Eldorado Brougham is one of the most stylish and elegant I have ever seen! Unique styling, combined with that beautiful black paint, stainless steel roof, bubble-type windshield, chrome-finished rear fenders, striking air intakes and the iconic front dominated by that large grille, quad headlights and the unique bullet or Dagmar bumper. Great car Lou!! Thanks for showing!! Some of these made their way to Australia during the 1980s. I used to regularly see a couple of '57 / '58 Eldorado Broughams at various car shows.
What an impressive collection of cars that Steve Plunkett owns. Lou, I think this is my favorite of Steve's cars that you have featured. I can picture Bob and Dolores Hope motoring around Beverly Hills and Palm Springs in this beauty.
It's an amazing car, sharing a lot of the look of the rest of the line but completely unique and slicker and more sophisticated than the rest - although by 1958 its soft rounded Harley Earl look was really over with. With its total uniqueness in every way, luxury, and very low production numbers I'm surprised that a really good one isn't a million dollars. I'm also surprised that this one still has its air suspension working and the airbags haven't been replaced by coil springs (like almost all the other 1958 GM and Ford air suspensions cars had done pretty quickly).
Hi emjayay, "It's an amazing car, sharing a lot of the look of the rest of the line but completely unique and slicker and more sophisticated than the rest" Well said. Thank you for viewing and sharing, Lou

Noticing the bit of difficulty in opening the back door at 4:40, I’ve always wondered how much extra stiffening the car manufacturer had to add to the frame for cars with “suicide doors” like this Eldo, and even more notably, the early ‘60’s Lincoln convertibles.
A real beauty! What I can't figure out is why they kept the '57 front bumper on the Brougham, with its diagonal sections, rather than the horizontal version seen on the '58 Eldorado convertible.

That's one beautiful car quite unique an ultra fancy and the fact that belonged to Bob Hope at one time makes it even more? rare of a car😊
Hi Pete, Happy to share this car with you and glad you enjoy the looks of this "ultra fancy" car :-) Lou
What an awesome car! Bob Hope owned it, that's cool. All it lacks is the smokeless ash tray.
Happy to read "What an awesome car!" :-)
Clutch my pearls and call me Edna! Oh my! What a MAGNIFICENT car! Lou just out did himself with this one - a tendency of his where he has no ceiling of amazing to show us on this channel! Bravo!
Hi Edna, Happy to share this "MAGNIFICENT car!" with you :-) Lou
That is a true luxo-barge! A land yacht. Really beautiful Caddy. Looks so pristine!
All aboard!
What a beautiful car. Love these big fin 50s car's. Bob Hope sure picked a beauty. Thanks for showing this beautiful car guys ❤.
Hi Donald, Happy to read "What a beautiful car." :-) You're welcome, Lou
Not just any car that's for sure. Love the back story too.
Happy to share this car with you :-)
What an amazing car. I have heard of them and have seen pictures in books, but have never seen one in my 61 years. I had no idea they had some of those features. Like the trunk lid pull-down for instance. Amazing.

Saw one in a museum in Denver a few years ago.
Great car Lou!! Thanks for showing!! Some of these made their way to Australia during the 1980s. I used to regularly see a couple of '57 / '58 Eldorado Broughams at various car shows.
Hi Tiger, Happy to read this car brings back memories of the car you've seen in Australia :-) Thank you for viewing and sharing, Lou
It takes One Lou
to find the One Most Special Cadillac.
Been a while BUT I truly enjoy the automobiles you show us.
Bless you, friend.
Hi Freddy, Happy to read you enjoy this Cadillac :-) Blessings received. God bless you too, Lou
What an impressive collection of cars that Steve Plunkett owns. Lou, I think this is my favorite of Steve's cars that you have featured. I can picture Bob and Dolores Hope motoring around Beverly Hills and Palm Springs in this beauty.
Hi Mike, "I think this is my favorite of Steve's cars that you have featured" High praise. My pleasure sharing this car with you, Lou
Even that structural post between the front & rear doors is a work of art.
What a magnificent example of beauty & engineering. Everywhere you look is design greatness and splendour.
Anerica at her finest. Mr Hope had superb taste.

That car is amazing!!
High praise.
Absolutely handsome Cadillac!! My bride was born in 1957, and I graduated from grammar school in 1958……the BEST years of the Brougham. If I was to pick a car of the 1950’s it would absolutely be the 1957-58 Cadillac Eldorado Brougham. Could there be a veteran’s discount?! LOL!!
Thank you so much for this video Lou.
Hi Steven, Happy to read "Absolutely handsome Cadillac!!" :-) Please have your Bride type into RUclips search "My Car Story with Lou 1957 Cadillac" and hope she sees cars she likes. Glad to read this car is the cars for you from the 1950's. You're welcome, Lou

My bride has been in the hospital since 5A Monday. Large tumor, and growing, on adrenal gland next to R lung. No results from biopsy yet.
I already knew that Bob Hope had owned one, so when I was watching, I had a pretty good guess that it had belonged to him.
's quite a feature, these Eldorados were the real deal! Considering the fact that GM lost over ten grand on each of them says a lot for their determination.
Hi Daniel, Happy to share this "real deal!" car with you. Thank you for viewing and sharing, Lou
This car is an absolute knock out !
Pow Pow :-)
@@loucostabile Thank you for this great video Lou
Lou what an incredible find so much automotive history and the right gentleman to take stewardship. Looks like a vehicle Bob Hope would own pure class.
David, Happy to read you enjoy this "incredible find" :-) My pleasure sharing this car with you, Lou
I'm a firm believer in driving your classic cars and super cars and not leaving them in the garage, but I'm not sure I'd drive this one.
.....oh if you had this, you'd have to give it a ride once in a while :-) WAY TO GOOD not too.
@@loucostabile just around the garage. 😉
my favourite Eldorado.
Nice :-)
Going for a ride in that must have been a real treat!
I was looking forward to a ride in this car :-) Glad to be able to share the experience with you.
This car is absolutely AMAZING, easily the best I've seen in your channel. I've never been a Cadillac fan, but this car looks gorgeous at every angle, the technical advancements, the refinements and the materials are incredible for a car of that period. Congratulations for the owner, he has a real real gem of the golden era of US cars.
High praise.
Wow. So ahead of their time and gorgeous. Thanks again for sharing.
Happy to read "Wow. So ahead of their time and gorgeous." :-) You're welcome. My pleasure sharing with you.
Lou, I'm a car fanatic and every one of your videos increases my knowledge. Thanks so much for all the awesome cars from all different companies and time periods! Steve's caddy was an absolute work of art!
Steven, Happy to read you're knowledge is increasing watching the videos. My knowledge is increasing too, and I find that to be so much fun. Glad to share this "absolute work of art!" with you. You're welcome, Lou

I was not a Cadillac fan when I was young, but time and distance now compel me to acknowledge what wonderful works of automotive art these cars are.
Cars have an amazing way of looking better with age :-)
@@loucostabile Yes, they do!
Another beautiful car. Cars had a unique personality back then, no matter if was a basic or luxury car. Should have been a great time for car spotting. Greetings Lou.

Best year
Happy to read "Best year" :-)
What a car! It cost more to build than they could sell it for, that means they sold a ton of 57 and 58 Chevys to fund these Cadillacs.
Hi Mark G, Happy to read "What a car!" :-) Thank you for viewing and sharing, Lou
OMG, Bob Hope's car! I loved watching Bob Hopes movies and specials when I was a kid 😊 Love the trunk among other things, especially the syling, brushed stainless roof. Thanks, Stave and Lou!
NICE!
Harkens back to better times.
Yes it does.
The chrome "wing" steering wheel is subtle but not subtle. Love it.
Hi Charles, Thank you for sharing the detail you notice and love :-) Lou
Amazing car, great owner, and a great video Lou! I noticed the lower right brake light was out when he pushed the brake pedal. With as many cars as Steve owns, it must be maddening to have to keep looking after so many little things like that. Such car collections are really gifts for the rest of us to enjoy...
Hi MDavid G, Happy to read you enjoy this "Amazing car' :-) Yes, I'm sure when you have this many vehicles you might have to get in a refresh yourself on where everything is. My pleasure sharing Steves collection with you. Stay tuned, there are more from his collection coming, Lou

Could you imagine the conversations that went on with Bob Hope driving around in1958. Wow so cool
Thanks for sharing, as I didn't think of that, however you have an interesting thought.
It's amazing to compare this 1958 model with the 1959 model (which looks like the 1963 Sedan Deville). Huge amount of change in just one model year.
Hi Vicious Poodle, "Huge amount of change in just one model year." I agree, Lou
@@loucostabile And the 1959 model DID NOT have the huge iconic gaudy tail fins of all the other 1959 models and the wrap around windshield. More of a 1960 type tail fin. You should do a video on that car as well!
What a car! Love the technical features, thanks for the video. Go Leafs Go
Hi Steve, Happy to read "What a car!" :-) You're welcome, Lou
In high school I worked at a previously owned Cadillac dealer and we had one that I always admired as the air suspension would always leak and it looked like a low rider. Really cool to see one again great car.

A masterpiece metal sculpture by Cadillac. . . :>/
High praise.
Noticing the bit of difficulty in opening the back door at 4:40, I’ve always wondered how much extra stiffening the car manufacturer had to add to the frame for cars with “suicide doors” like this Eldo, and even more notably, the early ‘60’s Lincoln convertibles.
Hi OldRustySteele, Thanks for viewing and sharing, I seemed to be able to open the doors ok. Lou
Thanks!

Cadillac has always been the standard
of excellence when it came to American
Cars.
This one would clearly qualify for "standard of excellence when it came to American Cars"
Those are not faux exhaust ports, the original exhaust was routed into the ports.
Thanks for sharing.
A real beauty! What I can't figure out is why they kept the '57 front bumper on the Brougham, with its diagonal sections, rather than the horizontal version seen on the '58 Eldorado convertible.

Always liked the Eldo Brougham. I knew Bob Hope owned one - it's good to know the car is still with us. Quad headlights were a novel feature in 1957-58, but they didn't solely originate with the Eldorado Brougham. The 1957 Lincoln Premiere also featured them.

Costabile comes through with another wonderful presentation. Opinions about the beauty of these GM ‘58’s will vary. My particular view of it is that they are butt ugly, particularly but not exclusively, from over-the-top ornamentation. Thank you so much for these broadcasts, Lou.
