On "My Car Story" we're in Canada on 8-8-24.
We're looking at a 1953 Cadillac Eldorado Convertible in Azure Blue Paint. The car comes with the 331 CI V8 engine and an automatic transmission.
The car's Owner is Steve Plunkett. Steve’s had this car since 2001. Steve shares this was one of the first Cadillacs he thought the design was stunning, and glad he purchased it. This is the first year for the Eldorado name on a Cadillac. This one looks showroom new.
ENJOY!
Hi, If you like this video, please click on SUPER THANKS ❤ with the $ in the middle which is the SUPER THANKS button under the video. Thank you! Lou
Look like the car the counrty singer hank williams sr died in
Funny you say that because that’s what exactly I was researching for a future article. Researching what this big American boat on four wheels looked like before it sadly became a hearse for Hank Sr.
You struck gold this time, Lou. Steve's collection would make any museum curator proud.
Hi Raz, "You struck gold this time," You're right, and looking forward to sharing with you. Stay tuned! Lou
A real beauty Lou!1949-1953 Cadillacs from that era were some of the best looking models that were ever built!!!
Hi Jeffrey, High praise on the looks of this car :-) Lou
A true 1950's beauty. The chrome is impressive! Everything is impressive, actually. I am glad that the owner takes it out for a drive and doesn't keep it out of sight. Lou, your son picked a great one for My Car Story 👍
Hi Mike, Happy to read "A true 1950's beauty" :-) Glad to read you enjoyed Joey's pick, Lou

Ron, Thanks for Subscribing to the Channel! Welcome. Lou
What a great Cadillac! The bar was set pretty high for the successor Eldos with this one, and Mr. Plunkett's shows us exactly why. Thanks for traveling internationally to bring us this one, Lou!
Hi TheGunfighter45acp, Happy to read you enjoy this Cadillac :-) You're welcome. Stay tuned, many more from Steve's collection to share, Lou
Beautiful Cadillac - love the colour.
Gotta love the Canadian cars.
I did not realize that 1953 was the first year for the Eldo.
Thanks Lou for letting us see this classic.
Hi Jeff, Happy to read you enjoy the looks of this car :-) My pleasure sharing with you, and I didn't know 53 was the 1st year either until Steve shared that with me. You're welcome, Lou
Beautiful car Lou, thank you for sharing. I’m 😊sure that car is valuable today!
Hi Gary, Happy to read you enjoy the looks of this car :-) Lou
Holy Cadillac, Batman! What a beautiful - stunning - pristine Cadillac! Lou just hit a homerun at a stadium in NY and the ball finally landed in Atlanta! This is magnificent in color and detailing. Did you notice the quality of construction of the cover for the folding top? Such over engineering and craftsmanship. This is one of the most remarkable cars you have ever captured, Lou! Thanks for sharing!
Hi ultraviolet tp, "This is one of the most remarkable cars you have ever captured," High praise :-) You're welcome, Lou
That is a true Cadillac Eldorado beauty, I love the paint color and its style with curvature!
Hi ACatal2, Happy to read you enjoy the looks of this car :-) Lou
What a beauty. In 1969 I was a sailor in Florida and stopped by a used car lot to look at one just like this one - same color even. $400 price tag. I passed on it because I thought the cost of gas would bankrupt me. Bought a 1962 red MGA MKII without first and reverse gear - $900. Today, that MGA is in Dayton and I know the owners. Still, can’t forget my brush with the Caddy. This example is incredible. Thanks Lou.
Hi M A, Would that be interesting if this was the car you passed on? Lou
You're welcome.
Steve's Eldorado is a true specimen of automotive design. Lou, Your Son choose a gem...Thanks.
Hi CJ Design, "true specimen of automotive design" High praise :-) You're welcome, Lou
Hi, Lou! This was definitely a must-see episode, because I know just how rare and special this Cadillac is. This was the first Eldorado, as you mentioned, and the name, in Spanish, means "the gilded one", and at that nearly $8K price ($7,750 to be precise), it most certainly was, with just about all that Cadillac had to offer in 1953. The Eldorados that followed, through 1966, were closer in style to lesser Cadillacs and far less expensive, but the Eldo got its own style once again when it became a personal FWD coupe in 1967. The last year for the Eldo was 2002. (Too bad Cadillac didn't hold out for another year, then it would have made it to 50.)
BTW, there were two other very special and exclusive convertibles released by GM in 1953, the Buick Skylark and the Oldsmobile Fiesta, and they were styled along similar lines with the dipped beltlines and panoramic windshields. Another highlight was the first edition of America's first sports car, the Corvette.
Just out of curiosity, is this the first video you've shot in Canada?
Many thanks to you and Steve for spotlighting this ultimate Standard of the World for us and taking us along for the ride. ILL CYA later!
Hi iswc27, Happy to read "This was definitely a must-see episode" :-) Yes 1st International visit, and stay tuned, there is much more to come. You're welcome, Lou
What a great 1st year for a car. Extremely impressive

Miles of paint and chrome. Very nice Eldo. And neat its the first year. Thanks Lou!
"Miles of paint and chrome" ...just the way we like it :-) You're welcome John!
Right car for the right man. You can see that Steve really enjoys this fine and splendid automobile. Thanks for bringing this video forward Lou. Lastly, the bumpers on this Eldorado probably weigh more than most entire modern cars!
Hi Kevin, "Right car for the right man" I agree. "the bumpers on this Eldorado probably weigh more than most entire modern cars!" I agree, You're welcome, Lou

First Cadillac I ever worked on as a Cadillac Tech in 1983... It was Navy Blue with a Brown Convertible top and Brown Leather. I had to change the drivers side window regulator.... Thanks for posting Lou!

Hello Lou, This Caddy has Style, Beauty, Comfort and she rides like a Cloud. This car is BIG, but I Love the Strong Presence. And I noticed how quiet the motor is when the motor started. This is another exciting presentation of a Fabulous Era of Automobiles. 😊
Hello Edwin, Happy to read you enjoy this car and the presentation too, Lou
Wowza what a Car…!!!
NICE!
Absolutely beautiful
:-)
Fantastic Cadillac! First year for the wraparound windshield for Cadillac, like the 1953 Oldsmobile Fiesta. Both models debuted at the New York Waldorf-Astoria GM Motorama for 1953, which also debuted the first 1953 Chevy Corvette. There was also a one-off 1953 Cadillac El Dorado convertible with a supercharger and pipes coming out of the hood on the sides, also the same color, Azure Sky Blue. a color first to debut on the 1952 Cadillac Series 62 convertible, of which country-western singer Hank Williams owned one, and died in it, now in the Hank Williams Museum in Montgomery, Alabama.
Happy to read "Fantastic Cadillac!" :-) Thank you for viewing and sharing.
Thanks for this. What a beautiful car.
You're welcome. Happy to read you enjoy the looks of this car :-)
I enjoyed that Lou beautiful car never realized it had the two-step latches to put the top down and then to cover it with the metal or plastic boot car❤
Hi James, Happy to read you enjoy this one :-) Lou
Boy, I sure got excited when I saw the thumb nail! I've been waiting for you Lou, to review a 53 Eldorado for along long time! Glad you finally got an opportunity to review one of these magnificent and notable vehicle. The 53 Eldorado is my 10 list of favorite cars all time, as well as my 2nd favorite Cadillac ever besides the 59! It also holds a special place for me as when I was a kid, I had red hot wheel model of these and it was my favorite car to play with as a kid, and my most prized possession! I currently own another 1/64th model that's in the same color as this one. The color on this car is gorgeous, my 2nd favorite color for these, #1 being red. The most interesting part of the video is when Steve demonstrated how the top works, I never knew it operated the way it did. I definitely learned more about this car from this video! Thank you Lou showing this amazing car to us, and thank you as well Steve for allowing Lou to film and broadcast it to the world! Great video Lou!
Hi Zach, Happy to read this one is "Top 2" for you :-) You're welcome, Lou
Gorgeous classic Cadillac, designed by Harley Earl.
Happy to read you enjoy the looks of this car :-)
The trunk echoes. 😂 Hellooooooo, hellooooo....

When I see this first year Eldorado I think of President Eisenhower riding in one in a parade, waving to the crowds. Never could do that nowadays!
Thank you for sharing what you think of :-)

Keep'em coming Lou 😎
Hi Pat, Happy to read "OMG what a car!!!" :-) My pleasure sharing this one with you. You're welcome, Lou
Thanks for sharing this great car.
My pleasure sharing with you. You're welcome.
Welcome to Canada, Lou! What a spectacular car in “showroom” condition! Pretty amazing that it has an “unused” spare tire as well. Fleetwoods can be considered “banker’s cars.” But this car proves that even bankers like a measure of sportiness!
Fun time is Canada Fred. Happy to read you enjoy this car :-) Stay tuned, there is much more from Steve's collection.
Ground breaking car. Motorama! Thanks Lou!!!!
Happy to read you appreciate this "Ground breaking car" :-) You're welcome MELLIEbevhills!!!!

This is truly a one in a million car.
NICE!
What a beautiful automobile! Wow!
Safe travels fellas!
Happy to read you enjoy the looks of this car :-)
This cars engine was introduced in 1949 and was the first V-8 utilizing a slipper piston design which lowered the deck height, thus reducing engine weight. This was a revolutionary development, which is widely copied to this day. The 1953 version was rated at 210 hp. The identical 1954 engine was rated at 230 hp., so the '53 was intentionally underrated. The power windows and seat were hydraulically operated. That year, GM's Hydramatic factory burned, forcing Cadillac to use Buick's Dynaflow transmission during part of the production year. I once owned a '53 Fleetwood 60 Special so equipped. It was no hot rod, but was the quietest car I've ever owned.
Hi Michael, Thank you for viewing and sharing your knowledge. Happy to read you had a fun 53 Fleetwood :-) Lou
Was this year Eldorado one third of the GM TRIFECTA? Which I think also included the Buick Skylark and the Oldsmobile Fiesta.
ALL were literally "hand assembled," and in very limited qty. Regardless, this car is ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL!
Hi Wayne, Happy to read "ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL!" :-) Lou
This car is dreamy. Thank you for sharing

@loucostabile subscribed and looking forward to more ❤️
Lou this has to be one of the best if not the best car story you have done. You really strived to cover all the unique features of this car. The hide away top and your video covering its operation was fantastic. The way the seat moves forward for better access to the back seat was a unique option for a car this year, The handle to open the doors was also way ahead of its time.
One question. Did this car not have power seats? That was not mentioned in the Story. If not that would seem unusual on a Cadillac let alone an Eldorado.
Bill, High praise on this story. I don't recall if this car had power seats other than the seat moving forward when you pull the front seat forward to get in the back, Lou
Wow...Lou!! What a gem that is... So beautiful... Im not a 50's person per se, but I can always appreciate styling and beauty. We just had this conversation about colors the other day, as my brother just bought a new car.. White with Grey interior.... (BORING). That interior had about 4-5 different colors and textures in it. The steering wheel was MASSIVE.. Thank you for sharing it with us.
Hi SeaTravelr123, Happy to read you enjoy the looks of this "gem" :-) My pleasure sharing with you. You're welcome, Lou
Nice to see you in my backyard showing a classic Caddy. A real beauty! Every time I hear the name Eldorado I think of a certain Jimmy Buffet song, Earls dead, Cadillac for sale.
Hi Trip Reviews, Fun time in Canada :-) Happy to share this classic Caddy. Stay tuned, more to come from Steve's collection, Lou
This car looks fantastic with the ragtop up, and the whole design of the car has a slight sag appearance in front of the rear quarter. It says “don’t mess with it”. Even in baby blue it looks tough. What a beaut.
Happy to read you enjoy the looks of this car :-)
What a dream machine and the paint job is outstanding (granted I'm a no.1 Richard Petty fan) yet I can't recall the last time 17mins flew by so fast YOU DA MAN LOU and thank you to your son for all the editing this channel is top notch and I'm glad I found it years ago!
P.s how was the suspension ride on that dream boat?

This is a beauty
:-)
Another " Baby lou beauty" . 😮
NICE!
GM came out with The Olds Fiesta! The Buick Century and that Eldorado in 53! All soft tops high horse power cars and a few collectors have all 3! For a Cadillac guy this is as good as it gets! Great video! 🎉
Hi Jeffrey, Thank you for viewing and sharing your knowledge.
Very nicely done restoration. These are very special cars that sell for around $150G since they are unique compared to the Series 62. I have a 1953 Series 62 convertible in the lighter “pastoral” blue with a dark blue interior. I was glad you went into depth with your review since it is difficult to note all of the minor and major differences with my lesser Caddy!
Hi Brian, Happy to read you enjoy this restoration :-) Thank you for sharing your knowledge. My pleasure going into depth with this review, Lou
I own a large CADILLAC collection amounting up to 75 models from the late '30s through the late '50s. However, they are all miniatures in 1:18, 1:24 and 1:43 scales.
Mini Cadillacs are FUN :-)
Azure Blue.. I love it, the color of the 60s for sure. I always wanted a 68' bass guitar same color, with a white body. Azure Blue pick plate... Fender Precision Bass..
"Azure Blue.. I love it," One of my Son's favorite cars in Steve's collection, also based on the color.
historic. mammoth luxury.
I agree.
That is one impressive car! I am a Ford Motor Company fan, and my preference in the luxury car market would be Lincoln. However, this car is proof that in the 50s, Cadillac was a step up from the Lincoln. My wife's grandfather was an El Dorado guy. According to her, he bought only the Eldorado, and I think he traded them in often, if not every year, then every other year. The only improvement I could suggest for this car would be to get rid of the continental kit and fuzzy dice.
Hi Daniel, Happy to read "That is one impressive car!" :-) Thanks for viewing and sharing, Lou
Ha ha. You’re right about the dice . I was scolded at Amelia Concours too. Lol
That's one beautiful car I'm definitely a massive front bumper and it seems to run very well I also like the color
Hi Pete, Happy to read "That's one beautiful car" :-) Lou
Good lord..... its, its... SO BIG. Bigger than some of my old apartments! 😮lovely......
NICE!
Beautiful,
We had a 53 Olds same color with the electronic eye

Absolutely beautiful Cadillac My Dad may have help build this car he worked for Cadillac around this time in Michigan. God Bless.
Hi Leroy, Wouldn't that be something if your Dad worked on this one . Happy to read you enjoy the looks of this car :-) Blessings received. God bless you too, Lou
Beyond Fabulous
High praise.
Beautiful Eldorado there, with a very elegant looking interior. Significantly superior (IMO) to even the '56 models. Another unique feature of this car is the fact that it has *two* full size spare tires! Although it's doubtful that it came that way as new, since the continental kitted rear end was after-market, as mentioned.
Hi UCan CallMeRay, Happy to read you enjoy the looks of this car :-) Thank you for viewing and sharing what you notice too, Lou
Lou, I was 5 years old when the baby came out, I remember the hood ornament was called the Flying Lady. Edwin Martin 😊
Edwin, Thank you for sharing the name of the hood ornament.
For me, the 1953s are the most iconic Cadillacs of all time. Eldorado, Series 62 Convertible, Coupè de Ville and Fleetwood

Sick vid.
Thank you :-)
That's massive
Yes it is :-)
Wish I had a 53 Caddy today
Hope you're behind the wheel of the right one for you soon.
Just wondering where that El Dorado originated. A fellow I knew in Vancouver in the mid ‘50s had one, same colour. I rode in it often, and thought it an amazing vehicle.
Hi Bruce, Hmmm, not sure where it originated. A google search might help solve that. No doubt that top was a nice bit of engr'ng for its day. However the soft-top in my 2020 Miata can be put up or down by one person in 6-8 seconds. Granted, the Miata's top is much smaller but still... Just sayin'!! Regardless, this Caddy is in amazing condition... I love it!!
Thank you for sharing the ease of your top down speed, and happy to read "I love it!!" :-)
Hi Lou, my favorite year Eldorado besides the Bicentennial Edition. Hi Steve what is the first year of the Biarritz? Also could you order A/C in this configuration. Also love the Continental Kit. Great Video Thank You 🙏
Hi Big Mountain, Happy to read this is a favorite of yours :-) You're welcome, Lou
Putting down the top certainly wasn't woman's work back in the day, LOL. Within a couple of years, Ford had figured out how to automate the hide-a-way top function with the push of a button using lots of servo motors. The technology was developed for a proposed convertible version of the 1956-1957 Lincoln Continental. When sales didn't measure up, the convertible was shelved and the complicated tech was used on the 1957-1959 Ford Skyliner and the 1961-1968 Lincoln convertibles.

Lou I tried to find the super thanks and was unable to do so. I then went to your About and found a paetreon option and chose that for five dollars a month. When I got to the submit part I hit it but it wouldn't work.
Bill, Thank you for wanting to support the Channel. I appreciate that. Hmmm, wonder why those options are not working? Lou
A Caddilac with a Continental kit ....
I'm sure Caddy had another name for it.
What was it?
....big spare tire thingy off the back end of the car?
Comin´from Outer Space in a Blue Suit.......................
:-)
how much hp and torque have that cadillac
Hmmm, not sure. Hoping a Viewer can share, or I bet if you Google search "How much horse power does a 1953 Cadillac with a 331 CI V8 have?" you can find the answer.
Had a 53 coupe and a parts car. The front bumper is very heavy
Hi A, Happy to read this car brings back memories of your parts car :-) Thank you for viewing and sharing, Lou
How much would this car be worth at auction today?
No idea.
I've never understood why Cadillac chose to offer the first Eldorado on a body that was on its last run. This 1953 body was already 3 years old and set to discontinue.
The entire Cadillac line had been redesigned for 1954.
I find it very odd.
Hmmm, that's interesting. Could be they felt comfortable knowing that the design was solid, however I have no idea.
This one absofreakinkoutly 🔵 blue me away 😅
NICE!
They certainly didn't have French stitching along the dash thats for sure or the or the ghetto pump extender kit.
