On "My Car Story" we're in the West Suburbs of Chicago IL on 7-23-20.
We're looking at a 1958 Buick Limited Convertible in Black Paint. The car comes with the factory V8 engine.
The car's Owner is Ken Nagel. Ken’s had this car since 2010. He shares details on this car that looks “showroom” new. Ken shared there were less than 900 Buick Limited Convertibles produced. The car has so much Chrome I’ve nick named it “The Chrome King”.
If you'd like to see this car on Ken's website here is the link kennagelclassi...
ENJOY!
this is one of those beautiful cars you just don't see anymore wow. nice. those were the good ole days.
Hi mouse lee, Happy to read you enjoy the looks of this Big Buick :-) Lou
@@loucostabile thanks lou, I haven't seen one of these in forever and especially not in this condition, beautiful car. that's my car generation, love to see some truck from this era too!
@@loucostabile Buick used the term "B-58" in the marketing of these cars. About the same time, Convair Aviation was building the B-58 Hustler fighter-bomber. Is it possible that GM might have been involved in building components for that aircraft?
BEAUTIFUL Car. Thank you for sharing. High school buddy restored 2 '58 Buicks, white Special (sedan), and black Super (coupe). Lots of memories of drive-in movies and cruising around town. Heard it was the car with the most chrome.

An absolutely gorgeous car! I personally think it’s nicer than the Cadillacs of its day!
High praise :-)
My Pops had one of these (hardtop) when I was in college. Pops was a bit of a "shade tree" mechanic, and the Buick belonged to a guy who couldn't pay his repair bill. It sat there in our car port for the longest, and I thought it was for ME for my birthday that fall. I'd come home everyday, walk around "my" car...just waiting on my birthday. To my shock and surprise, one day I came home and it was GONE! It was only then that I found out it wasn't FOR me.....man did I have plans for that car.

Among the most gorgeous of the post war Buicks along with the '65 Riviera. Styling, options touches shared with the '58 Eldo Brougham.
High praise :-)
Hey Lou, fantastic 58 Buick Limited classic car, tell Ken I will “exercise” his car for him, more than twice a year. What a great piece of “artistic” automobile. Great interview Lou but next time get Ken to “honk” the horns on the car, it reminds me of a “train” sound.👍✌️💚🙏🏻❤️
Hi Gary, Happy to read you'll help Ken with exercising the cars :-) Lou
What a great looking car!
Happy to read you enjoy this one :-)
WOW!!! what a dream car. (made in Detroit)
Happy to receive a "WOW!!!" from you :-)
I thought it was built in Flint Michigan

Hilarious! And how true
You got more comments on this one than most you present. You used to buy a work of art now you can only get an appliance.
Thanks.
Hi Gary, This video is doing well :-) Lou
Because black is where it's at. It really "sells" the car imo.
That Buick is a rolling work of art!
High praise for the looks of this car :-)
Such rare and beautiful cars! I always loved this car's big, beefy good looks. Chrome, fins, wraparound windshield...the works. When the '58s were in pre-production, Harley Earle told the designers at GM to "put the chrome on, and I'll take it off." To their surprise, he didn't! May we all be thankful for that!

Lee Martin A 1958 Oldsmobile 98 or a 1958 Cadillac series 60 special would run this 1958 Buick Limited a close second in the chrome contest!.
Harley Earl retired shortly thereafter so he wanted his last one to be well remembered.
Oh my Lord! When I first seen it coming at the beginning of this segment, I was in awe and probably mesmerized trans too! Mr. Ken sir, what a beautiful piece of art of an automobile!!! I just love it! I believe the 1958's were the first year of the Quad headlamps. But man or man! Mr. Lou, I seen many automobiles on your show, but this 1958 Buick Limited is I think the best looking automobile that I ever seen! Wow! Thank you guys; I truly appreciate it. Again, thank you! Oh by the way, you guys were looking mighty cool in that beautiful scenic drive I just saw! Wow!!!
Hi Rickey, High praise for this Big Beautiful Buick :-) My pleasure sharing, and you're welcome, Lou
That Buick was probably the most elegant car of the 50s! The overall condition is amazing and the color combo is the best ever! Thanks Lou👍
Hi Don's Hot Rod Garage, High praise :-) My pleasure sharing this car with you. You're welcome, Lou
'57-58 Eldorado Brougham
My Dad had a 58 Roadmaster when I was a kid. The similarities between those models brought back great childhood memories for me. Modern cars may drive better, but it’s sad to see how much we have lost in terms of artistry and craftsmanship over the years. Beautiful vehicle! Thanks for sharing it with us.

Same story. We had a 58 Roadmaster 75. What a car !!!!
Lou, I looked it up “ The limited 4 door hardtop sedan STARTED at a base price of $5,112”. This was more expensive than most Cadillacs for 1958. They sold only 7438 of them and discontinued The Limited due to lack of sales success.-Wikipedia
Hi Brady Dog, Thank you for sharing your research, Lou
Lou: “The car is literally mesmerizing”.
Can’t add anything else to those words!
Thank you!
Hi Guillermo, Happy to share this "mesmerizing" car :-) Thank you for viewing & sharing, Lou
A truly magnificent car Lou, thanks for sharing these beauties with us. On a side note there are actually quite a few of these here in Sweden as well, seen them at major car shows like Power Meet. Unfortunately all car shows have been suspended due to Corona. It’s a real treat to be able to at least watch them online. I a specially enjoy when you go for a little ride in the cars as well.
We had the blue gray color I remember the night my parents brought it home I was 8 years old I played with the power windows that engine sure sounds familiar thank you!
@Michael Walter I owned a 1955 Century, sweet car. Buick was unique with it's dynaflow transmission. To Start the car, you pushed the gas pedal with the key turned on and the starter would engage. wish I had it today but that was log ago in the early 60's
This '58 Buick puts them all to shame! Great car, Lou!
Hi Jeff di Giusto, Happy to read you enjoy this Big Buick :-) Lou
Had my 58 Century 2 door hardtop for almost 20 years. Love that car!

@@loucostabile I did. I actually still have the Century! Thanks for your channel. Always a treat!
Please pardon my ignorance, but did the Century replace the Limited? I am a fan of Buick's, and I have never seen a car like this.
This Buick is fantastic! If it's in Ken's collection, you know it's gonna be the best of the best. Thanks, Lou!
Hi TheGunfighter45acp, High praise for this Big Buick :-) You're welcome, Lou
Black paint dried faster than other colors. That's why Henry Ford painted cars black. To. save.production time.
This is Buick and GM at it's best. This is what Buick is a large expensive luxury car. Today's Buicks don't even begin to compare.
Hi Thom, High praise for this Big Buick :-) Lou
One of my favourite cars ever, along with '57 Chevy Bel Air, '58 Cadillac Series 62 and '59 Cadillac Biarritz

Hi Tom Vidar Nordmarken, This one is a "Sweet Dream" :-) You're welcome, Lou
WOW, no fender side holes ! Buggers up my idea that all classic buicks had Holes !
Hi Steve, Nope, no holes in this one. Lou
@@loucostabile Hi Lou. I owned Roadmasters . Looks like they dropped the signatory port holes in 1958. Those make a Buick ! Looks like they brought the side holes back in the 1960 Buick Electra.
Beautiful Buick. GM's most stunning car for 1958 in my opinion. With its big fins and chrome everywhere, the styling is so over the top 50s. And that grille. Wow! Thank you Lou. You're the best at showing off these great pieces of automotive art.
Hi Glenn Weaver, High praise for this car in 1958 :-) My pleasure sharing with you, and you're welcome, Lou
Don't forget the 58 Cadillac Fleetwood 60 Special, but it was a 4-door HT only.
It's a unique piece of automotive history, I don't remember them, Lou I always learn from your channel 👍
Hi Florida Scot, Happy to share the details of this Big Buick & glad to read you learned something too :-) Lou
Fantastic... What an amazing piece of machinery. This is when GM dominated.
High praise :-)
Well...not in '58. That was actually one of the worst years in Buick's history (partially due to that year's recession), and contemporary buyers were turned off by this car's styling. Of course we appreciate this beauty a heck of a lot more now!!
Man, that car has chrome up the chrome. !!!!!!! .
I agree, it's chromed to the max. Perhaps overchromed....especially the quarter panels with the over abundance of chrome diagonals.
Hi Gail, Happy to share this "chromed to the max" car with you :-) Lou
Now that is a fine car there Lou, absolutely stunning. It's amazing how much engineering and precision went into these cars and the attention to detail in every area. Plus the model designs changed every year so the auto makers were busy innovating and designing. Now they keep the same style for years. This car is a piece of art.
Hi Blackie Jones, Happy to read you enjoy this "fine car" :-) Lou
This is one of those cars you always remember.Grade 4 teacher drove a Black 58 Buick Special, more chrome than you could shake a stick at.She drove it daily into the 1980's.These were nicer than all others in 58.
Hi Marty, Thanks for viewing and sharing, Lou
This baby looks like it must have just about every available option that Buick offered for 1958, many of which did not become common place on american autos for some 20 years...simply amazing and would have been the envy of every neighborhood anywhere!
Hi Daniel, High praise for the "envy of every neighborhood anywhere!" :-) Lou
LOU, TELL KEN THAT I WOULD RATHER HAVE THIS "58' BUICK LIMITED" THAN ANY "58' CADDY"... ABSOLUTELY GORGEOUS ❣️❣️
PATRICK, High praise for this car :-) Lou

Lou, as you know I have watched a number of your videos but this one leaves me speechless and then he drove it! Wow just Wow.
Thank you so much, this one punched just about all of my boxes. Holy cow what a car.
Hi Rich, High praise for this car & episode :-) You're welcome, Lou
That was the air conditioner vent at the top middle he pointed to. Speaker was in the top of dash. I know because My dad had a 58 4 door Buick Limited. Fantastic car. It drew stares all the time as we kept it 8 years and other cars had no chrome like this baby.
Hi FRED, Thank you for viewing & sharing, Lou
This is a magnificent automobile!
Harley Earle was an absolute genius.
High praise :-)
One thing I remember about my parents 58 was the ignition switch that had a on off and lock. No spring return switch because you pressed the gas pedal to start it. Also you could drive it with no keys AS LONG as you didn't accidentally turn it to lock (left) Also the best set up where reverse was all the way down instead of just under park. Cool cars for sure!!!

This Limited ragtop is gorgeous and IMO the only '58 Buick model worthy of admiration thanks to far more integrated and tasteful chrome application
Hi Peter, "This Limited ragtop is gorgeous" High praise. Lou
Wow! An object of perfection! Great video, too!
High praise for this car & episode :-)
The seem like perfection now but obviously hardly anyone wanted them when new. The 1958 Eisenhower recession probably didn't help.

I LIKE ALL THE POINTY SPOTS TO IMPALE PODESTRIANS.
Thanks Lou for recommending this. Wow this really is the Chrome King. But if Buick had put even MORE CHROME on it, that would be fine with me haha. Another great car video. Your attention to the logos, badges, tags, and labels is excellent.
You're welcome Paul Mrod 25. Happy to read you enjoy the details too :-) Lou

@@loucostabile thank you for posting such interesting and unique automobiles, Lou.
The dashboard reminds me of a 50's juke box !
You're right :-)
Beautiful, rare Buick! Surprised no mention it’s an AC car, which was a rare and expensive option and almost unheard of in a convertible. Not sure where the radio speaker was located, but I believe that was the primary AC vent in the middle of the dash pad with smaller ones built into ends of the bottom tier of the dash. The four switches inset in the “dog leg“ of the wraparound windshield frame are one of oddest ever GM placements for power window operation. Was the same for other GM big cars. So fortunate someone had the Interest and the $$ to restore this great car! Cost almost certainly exceeded total value and even more so now as interest in 50’s culture fades. However, historical value is priceless!

Hi Greg from TX, High praise :-) You're welcome, Lou
And no seat belts, safe as can be.
In my 80+ years I only know of two Buick's (a1955 Century and a 1956 Roadmaster, both convertibles) ordered from the factory with wire wheels, It seems too many owners of late 1950 Buick's have a wire wheel phobia. Wire wheels were a factory Buick option in 54-56 but not 1957 or 58. My father had a fried with a 1958 Limited 4 door hardtop equipped with air suspension.
Hi Stude289, Thank you for sharing your knowledge. Lou
227" for a '58 Buick convertible,I had a '57 Cadillac Fleetwood 4 door hardtop and it was only 224" long.....This is crazy....nice Buick! GM of the 50s was the best ever!

Back in 1958 gasoline in LA was around 22c/gallon so driving full size cars and Hot Rods at 10-15mpg did not break the bank; the actual cost was paying for the traffic tickets. Retreaded tires in that era were $15-30 and would actually perform like new with no failures.

Hi Gerard, Happy to read you enjoy this car & video :-) You're welcome, Lou
Lou, YT suggested this video for me to watch, which I did - three years after I first watched it - and my opinion of this incredible car still stands. I noticed something this time around though. There are no VentiPorts (as Buick called them) in the front fenders. They must have thought that this car had enough chrome already?! 😄
Thanks once again 👍
Hi Mike, High praise. You're welcome, Lou
Buick made solid beautiful cars! Never seen that model on the road, as a kid in the 50's, but my mom had a used Buick "58-59"? In the 60's, Convertible Special Ivory White, chromed out, side ports, Buick spoke covers, black cloth top, great in summer, Chicago winters not so much, but I don't remember seeing a Buick in the 50's that didn't have chrome? But that Buick was the King 👑! Spectacular exterior and when you open the door to show off the beautiful red interior almost had to put on sunglasses! The red just popped! when the door was open! Just a Great Car from probably the Greatest Era of Car Styling Ever? 50's The Looks, 60's & 70's The Muscle! After that? Who Cares! as old men we realize what we saw on a regular basis! Was Greatest and Generational! And only now as old men can we afford what we couldn't as kids & teenagers! Churchill was right! Youth is wasted on the young! To see that car on a Chicago neighborhood driving down parked cars line street in and out of sunlight and shade of the trees, catching the light, chrome reflecting light onto everything it pasted, cars, houses street signs and finally it drives by and you see it in its Beauty! Would've the neighbors tongue wagging! One thing for a beautiful car being driven in the country where a few people would see it! It's another thing to be driving in a Chicago neighborhood where everyone would see it! Great Car!
Hi Michael, Happy to read this car brings back memories of your Moms car :-) Thank you for viewing and sharing, Lou
Yeah I'll take some paint with my chrome. LOL
That's awesome, probably the most chrome I've ever seen....definitely the biggest trunk I've seen!!
Hi Past Human, "Yeah I'll take some paint with my chrome" Nice! :-) Lou
Harley Earl masterpiece, in association with Buick Chief Designer Ned Nickels. I remember seeing a black 1958 Buick Limited 4-door luxury sedan around 1960, which shared the same body shell as the 1958 Cadillac Fleetwood 60 Special.

Hi Сергей, Thanks for sharing the songs for beautiful cars :-) Lou
Unlike FoMoCo and Chrysler who shared body shells and engines with their sister divisions, GM let their five primary divisions compete with each other in the engines they used. In 1976 GM was subjected to class action litigation when customers came to realize that their pricier Pontiacs and Oldsmobiles now used a common power plant with the entry level Chevrolet. Buick and Cadillac have always created their individual engines. The '58 Century Limited, like this beautiful convertible, was longer than a Series 62 Caddy and cost more than any other GM made car except the $13,000 El Dorado Brougham

Lou, you have grat camera angles. You show so much in detail, I'm thrilled with your videos. The 58 Buicks were so beautiful...I was not a fan of the 60 or 61...but again, I'd take one! I was a little boy when a friend of my father's showed us a car he had just obtained. It was a 1958 Oldsmobile. Similar to this but not near as luxurious! It was pink! I did not see the inside, only the outside. Because I was so young, it seemed like a tank! Beautiful black 1958 Buick Limited.
Hi Brian, Happy to read the details you enjoy :-) Glad to read this car brings back memories of your Fathers Friends car :-) Thank you for viewing and sharing, Lou
Not many were saved especially if all that chrome got pitted and needed rechroming. A neighbor had one of these with air suspension that was still working into the 1960s but after sitting about 2 years he had it hauled to the junkyard in 1968.
If buying one of these make sure it doesn't have a Flightpitch Dynaflow transmission as there are NO kits available for them (most have been uprooted for regular Dynaflow transmissions) The Flightpitch was discontinued in early 1959.
Another interesting thing is the Buick hadn't gone to idiot lights for the Amps and Oil pressure indicators as shown at 7:05.
I would not own or pay such a sum for a car only to drive it just twice a year for just a few miles. That is a waste. I drive my '57 Ford at least 200 miles a month or 2000 miles a year (none from Dec to Feb)
Hi Muffs 55mercury, Happy to read this car brings back memories of your neighbor's car :-) Glad to read you enjoy your 57 Ford. Thank you for viewing and sharing, Lou
Black & chrome is, most decidedly, the very best colorway to accentuate her features. Looks after her precisely as it should. I noticed that they chose a black depiction in the dealer catalog, no accident there! & that exhaust, is it integrated thru each bumper at a sort of canted, 45° angle? Superb styling. Also, the four sets of hash marks along the rear quarters MUST be a nod to the ports that was part of Buick's design DNA in earlier, & well, later models. Don't you think? I had to go to your site. Talk about a thorough & clean resto! Enjoy the hard work!

That could cause an accident from onlookers driving seeing it, those old cars are pure class. So many features associated with jets in those days. We had a 59 Olds Dynamic 88 station wagon
AMAZING RESTORATION, especially the dash, etc. I would hate to see the restoration cost
Hi Jim, Thanks for viewing and sharing your thoughts, Lou
If cars could talk , when this Buick stops next to a Mercedes or a Rolls … Bet they are very jealous and would say …. What a show off . This is one of the most beautiful cars I have ever seen …
This in 1958 made Cadillac & Lincoln’s envious ❤️ it !!
Hi tallspaniard1, High praise for the looks of this car :-) Lou
Not loved in '58, buyers tiring of ubergaudiness - and a sharp recession hit midprice cars hardest. Collectible Automobile mag said Buick Limited "lived up to its name in sales." Now it's a stunner!
Hi Arne, Thank you for viewing and sharing your knowledge. Lou
Way too mice to drive on the street! The Ultimate Buick! Those dashboards were incredible! It even has ultra rare factory air conditioning! NONE BETTER!
Hi Craig, High praise :-) Lou
At my father's funeral in 1989, I met his childhood friend Ned Walters, who told me that he was hired by General Motors in 1957. Ned's first assignment was to design the chrome for the '58 Buick Limited. He was told to ladle it on: more chrome; more chrome. When the car came out, the reviews were not complimentary, Ned was reassigned to Interiors. An inauspicious beginning to a long career at GM. Now the car is a classic.
Hi wahoo76, Thank you for sharing and adding to the story, Lou
How does the guy who actually owns the car seem to know so little about it? And Lou seems to have done zero homework. Basically the Limited -- resurrecting a model name last used by Buick in the early 1940s -- was an extended-deck version of the Roadmaster, eight inches longer with the additional inches all in the trunk. The rear fenders, trunk, bumper (with four backup lights) and taillights were unique to the Limited. You could get it as a coupe, four-door hardtop sedan or convertible. Same underpinnings as the Cadillac extended-deck models (Fleetwood 60 Special, DeVille, etc.). That grille above the radio is an air conditioning vent. Many of these cars came with air suspension and were later retrofitted with conventional steel springs. The other extended-deck offering for 1958 was the Mercury Park Lane.
Hi D Hall, "How does the guy who actually owns the car seem to know so little about it? And Lou seems to have done zero homework." THANK YOU FOR THE EASIST COMMENT I'm replying to today! 1) Ken doesn't know as much because he has SOOOO MANY cars and runs businesses, that he just has time to buy the finest examples of automotive history you and I have ever seen, then employs some of the finest restorers to make them look factory new, and then he enjoys them occasionally, and share them on this Channel for you to enjoy. Lou knows so little because there are 1500+ different cars I've worked to post for you (besides run my other 3 businesses, and take care of my family), understands I don't have to know a thing, because I can ask questions to the Care Taker of the car who will share knowledge if I ask good questions to receive that knowledge, I include "trunk & treats" which shares details from the time period correct Dealer brochures with all the facts, I travels across the country finding cars like this rare Bird which guys with knowledge like you probably have never actually seen in person, and I graciously share them so "Know It Alls" like you can make a "what you think shows your superiority comment and makes you feel good" and allows a platform for you to share your brilliance, and that is how I can learn too :-) Stay well, Subscribe, Hit the bell so you can see more cars when I up load them on RUclips, and watch the commercials before and after so I can share more cars for you to share your knowledge, Lou
This Buick shows as a testament, that America showed Europe how to make cars. You can't find a Car made in Europe in 1958, that can hold a candle to this car quality and attention to build. That includes Jaguar, Rolls Royce, or Mercedes Benz...
Hi Chase Nixon, Happy to read you appreciate this car :-) Thank you for viewing and sharing. Lou
This car was as far as you could go before you stepped in Cadillac territory! It's name may be "Limited," but with all that chrome on the body and all those interior features, it surely isn't limited in that department! (1/8/2022)
Hi Geminisixtyfour, You're right, this car has lots of chrome, Lou
Its a great car, you cant help but love it, but not the most stylish 50's car. No wonder GM hastily restyled their 1959 range. The Forward look Chryslers look better for mine, same with the 57 Chevrolet
Hi John, Happy to read "Its a great car, you cant help but love it" :-) Lou
Anyone who got to see this car in that year.. would've thought little of it, as I as a kid did..but, today you see it, and you'd say
**now that was beautiful then AND now even more, b/c their are so few of them..TODAY, you really get to appreciate them..I got to see it red..
Hi Juan, Thank you for viewing and sharing, Lou
I learned to drive in a '58 Buick Special. White with a brown top (top was painted because owner didn't like a solid white car back then). I loved that car even though it wasn't "cool" by the teen standards of the day. To this day the '58 Buick is my favorite of all the cars ever built. The one he couldn't remember was called the Century.

Just a footnote. The 225 inch length mentioned here was the basis for the later name of ELECTRA 225 which was longer than other Buicks. As I've said before, THOSE WERE THE DAYS and I am so fortunate to have lived them. As Bob Hope always sang, 😊 for the memories!
Hi RICK Oe, Thank you sharing that footnote. Lou
Wow 589 comments, this model draws attention. This was a separate series for 58 there were 3 body styles, convertible, 4 Dr 6 window hardtop and 2 Dr hardtop. there
were about 7400 of these made. This car cost more than a Cadillac
