+dallasINtokyo It's easy to be enthusiastic when it's the system that helped me in life. I know the rules of football, basketball, baseball, tennis and hockey because of that system.
Kickle Cubicle brings back memories of going to the dentist when I was a little kid. They had an NES hooked up in the waiting room, and that was one of the games they had there. I would always try to see how far I could get before I was called in to my appointment...and I remember the chair they had for you to sit on while you were playing was a giant tooth.
OMG RESCUE the embassy mission!! I played that game at a friends house when i was a kid and have been trying to figure out what it was called ever since!!!
I rented and played a lot of North & South! I lived in Electronics Boutique and Software Etc. I have the BEST memories from those two stores. Great friends that worked there that I got to know. I miss the 90's SO much.
I can't believe that the massive glitch in Rescue the Embassy Mission wasn't mentioned. Maybe it isn't in all copies. When you beat the game you get a newspaper talking about your adventure. But the game ending is swapped. If you win, you get the lose newspaper, but if you lose you get the winning one. Loved the video. Princess Tomato is one of my favourites from when I was a kid
John Riggs: RIGG'd Games Great suggestion with Rescue The Embassy Mission. I had this game and totally forgot about it. When I saw it in this video my face lit up, and the memories came rushing back. So thank you for reminding me of this awesome game.
Those are pretty common so I'm guessing underrated/underappreciated even though the collecting landscape has been changing post 2014 to where incoming collectors could view what were/are popular fairly common titles as now "uncommon" thanks to Ebay availability. It took the YT crowd almost a decade to wake up to many of the common titles hardcore gamers grew up with and a big part of the overlooking also had a lot to do with the younger crowds reviewing Nes titles a few years ago (following the Avgn inspired trend of the time) before acquiring the experienced eye for acknowledging what a gem looks like.
Burai fighter: cheat sidescrolling shooter with a kick ass soundtrack. Kabuki Quantum fighter: made by the Kirby developpers; a cheat fun sidescrolling action game where you beat enemies bu headbanging!
I would recommend Clash at Demonhead. It's an action-adventure platformer. My favorite thing about the game is the fact that it's an open sort of world, since you can choose which area you want to go to on an overworld map. This game makes you explore and I love that. There are also shops and power ups. Overall it's a really fun game!
This "Rescue the embassy mission" game is SO impressive! it has some visual effects that I have no idea how they made! (And that's because I've studied how retro 8 and 16 bit graphics work) Like the lights and the sniper aim, it's incredible! Keep in mind that the system could only show 25 colours on-screen and only had a single BG layer... With that in mind I'm still trying to wrap my head around how did they do those visual effects...
+Ruko Michiharu i had that game as a kid....and i'll take your word on its technical aspects, i remember being psyched myself when i first fired it up. The actual game itself was terrible....u literally saw everything the game had to offer in minutes. I felt ripped off then, and i feel that it in no way qualifies as a "hidden gem" on the nes. i maybe would recommend peeps to watch a quickie letsplay of it if they were so inclined...but paying anything more than 50 cents to me would be getting scammed! north and south, wurms, and cowboy kid were straight fire picks in my book. Wurms cover art for japan is great. Its usa variant, so terribly cheesy it hits glorious levels. Worth it for that alone.
So much respect. I'm more into classic gaming. Last time I bought a system was a Wii and doing that was a stretch. I prefer to watch longplays of classics, or videos talking about classics more than investing in new systems. This is happy content.
Thank you for sharing your favorite "hidden gems!" :D You help me find my ultimate favorite game, Rescue, the ebassy mission! I couldn't remember the title. My sis and I would always rent that one and have a blast. :D
Princess Tomato in the Salad Kingdom is one of those games you rented when you'd already played everything else at the rental store but you had to have something to play for the weekend, so you take it home, and it's surprisingly very good. It was very fun to explore and dive into the exciting world of vegetable politics and fruit intrigue. It was at least different :)
I had Rescue as a kid. It was definitely one of my most played games for a while. It was so much fun and ahead of its time. You could also play for a short time as it got really hard but so rewarding when you would finally move on. Man i always hoped for a remake or rerelease on the xbox arcade or something it would so work.
+tekguru8 Haha, yeah, the crab. "Sorry, I'm dead." I loved the Watch Me Dance guys. I didn't realize I had to actually watch them dance. I must've spent 10 minutes killing them over and over.
When I first got to them, I did the exact same thing. It made me so mad that I couldn't defeat them. It wasn't until much later I found out you just stand there and do nothing. Grrr...
John Riggs: RIGG'd Games ---> When I was 10, I was using the old NES Advantage controller when I faced the Watch Me duo. I had the turbo on and just held that button down for about 10- 15 minutes (I mean, I was 10. I was an idiot) before getting frustrated and launching the Advantage across the bed just to stare at the screen in disbelief. Just when I yell out "WHAT DOES IT TAKE???" They melt away. That moment made it one of my favorite NES games of all time.
Dude, I LOVED Monster Party as a kid. It was such a weird, trippy, fun game to play. Creepy, but somehow visually pleasing. And the ending was trippy as hell.
AMAZING video!! I grew up in this era, while collecting these games today, I spent 7 days str8 researching games and haven't heard of a single game mentioned here! Each game looks worth a play too! RESPECT!
I loved it and I like the guest (like all your guests). Very enthusiastic and knowledgeable. Would you ever do a Sega Master System video? Hidden gems or anything?
Wow I actually remember renting Monster Party as a kid. Holy hell, did I forget this game. The flashback hit when I saw the legs sticking outta the ground. ;)
Dig Dug 2, Dragon Spirit, Fire Hawk, Fire and Ice, Iron Tank, Little Nemo, Ring King, Shatterhand, Solar Jetman. Glad to see North and South made the cut!! Fantastic game.

As John mentioned, Cowboy Kid IS a lot like Mystical Ninja. Actually, it's almost just like a reskin of the Japan-only Famicom game Ganbare Goemon 2 (with different levels, of course), which is an earlier game in the Goemon, also known as Mystical Ninja series. So if you liked this one, you should probably check that one out, and even the first Ganbare Goemon game, because it's pretty similar. The first one is even available for the GBA as a part of the Famicom Classics series.
Thanks a lot for mentioning Rescue: The Embassy Mission! I've been wondering for years what that one sniper NES game with all those search-lights was. I actually thought it was Nightshade at one time.
John, Paul, Reggie and Kinsey are great, I wouldn't mind if they were all in every single video. But you should totally get Tony Stark back sometime as well! :D
+TheBigJB Cheers for the reply dude! I was hoping for that big hammer you got, but that's selfish of me. You need that for defence if the zombies come! Looking forward to your return. :D
+IronRooRoo You're absolutely welcome! Appreciate the love. Sadly, you don't have much hope of that massive hammer. It will only be wrested from my domain when I pass from this earth and even then it will likely go to one of my children. +Lishadra perhaps.
I saw this pop on my feed and immediately assumed the worst for it. Just like as was said in the intro, there's only so many really hidden NES games, but I'm legitimately impressed with the list you guys put together. Not necessarily my favorites on the system, but cool, unique games that don't get a whole lot of press (except Krion Conquest, that game can die in a fire). Hoping you can keep it up for a part 2 and 3, looking forward to them. And because everyone else is doing it, a few of my own: Kick Master Totally Rad Arkista's Ring Image Fight Solstice
Yea Kabuki is another hidden good one. I have been telling people about Power Blade forever. Less than 2 years ago is was a $5 game. Now its expensive and now more start to pay attention lol.
Yea I didn't even know of Power Blade 2 back then to be honest. But id assume all NES games were dirt cheap then. Around that time I was playing a lot of PS1.
princess tomato in the salad kingdom is awesome. especially when you get the giant robot part hahaha. sad that xexyz, or werewolf, even whomp em, or astyanax was not included 😢
I grew up with Kickle Cubicle and I HIGHLY recommend it to any NES owners or puzzle fans. the graphics are great and the different food themed worlds are colorful and interesting. Brings back a ton of fond memories.
I'm am so happy you mentioned Rescue. Definitely one excellent NES title. I got it from a cousin who got rid of their 20 game collection. And I am so happy to run across it.
+John Riggs: RIGG'd Games I don't know whether it is a "Hidden Gem", but I never see Shadow of the Ninja mentioned. It's an action game similar to Ninja Gaiden, but not as difficult, developed by Natsume. The Game Boy port was slightly changed and became the official Ninja Gaiden for GB
+John Riggs: RIGG'd Games Not sure how hidden these are, but some that are not as well know. Heavy Barrel: Arcade top down shooter kind of like the top down sections of Super C. This is a two player game so it was always a fun one to play with a friend when I was a kid. Game is also extremely cheap to buy. Iron Tank: Kind of reminds me of a top down shooter, only in a tank. Can collect power-ups and run over guys which is one of the best things ever. Also an extremely in-expensive game. Here's some games I've heard of more recently but never knew of when I was young: Mighty Final Fight: Basically Final Fight on NES with the art style more like River City Ransom. Really great game and one I don't actually own because it is very expensive, hopefully one day I can get it but worth checking out. Whomp'Em: Similar game to Megaman. Great platformer and not horribly priced for anyone looking to collect it. Shatterhand: This game is very similar to the Batman NES game. Another one that's not horribly expensive. Not sure if any of these are considered as hidden. Of the people I know, they are games not so well known.
+John Riggs: RIGG'd Games I have 2 for you: Faxanadu and Flying Warriors. Faxanadu is a side scrolling action RPG with a flawless soundtrack. I wanted a sequel to that game so bad that I mailed $40 cash to the developer's address in the instruction manual, you know, to cover my copy, right? Needless to say, I never got a sequel, and no matter how much money I make in my life, I'll always be $40 poorer because of that. My friends still laugh about that to this day. Flying Warriors is a localized version of one of the games in the Japanese Hiryu no Ken series. Again, great game with no sequel, at least not here in the U.S. When I got older and discovered emulation, I found out that there was indeed an NES sequel in Japan. Still waiting for that one to be translated... Anyway, 2 greats there that you should definitely check out if you haven't. Even complete in box, these 2 are cheap.
Hidden Gem Racer on NES - Knight Rider Its one of the first racers that utilized all of the mechanisms on the dash of inside the vehicle, forcing you to pay close attention while driving. Its a great alternative to Outrun, which the NES did not have. The background graphics changed to different real cities on each level, a very nice touch for the time. There is two modes, driving and a mission mode that gave you the ability to shoot while driving. In both modes, you have the ability to make your vehicle jump extremely high up into the air, which is awesome.
Eureka!!! "Rescue: the embassy mission" is one of the first videogames I every played on my cousins comodore system. I were never able to find the name later on, so I could not go back to it. Thanks to you two I will now be able to do just that. Thanks a million.
+Ryan AirZonkWorldChamp Inbetween these days, more of a cult classic but yeh I suppose it could pass. Not to mention that game alone is better than this entire list imo.
Its a good game, but not hidden, it debuted at #9 in Nintendo power upon release... Hidden now, maybe, but it wasn't. If a game cracked the nintendo power top 10 at any point, I don't consider it hidden, b/c it was voted upon by fans of the most popular games at the time. The video is what I'd consider hidden gems, little fanfare, maybe got a 1/2 page ad in EGM or something at one point, sparse rental /store stocks.
Firstly, I love both of your shirts. Secondly, some lesser-known and/or maybe overlooked games I've always been a fan of, are: Low G Man, Bucky O'Hare, M.C. Kids, Karnov, Star Tropics, Xexyz, Yo Noid!, Air Fortress, and Kid Niki.
I LOVED THIS VIDEO! My 2 favorite games were "Kicker Cubical" and "Princess Tomatoe", but I completely forgot what they were called, as it has been many years since I've played them. I have been trying to find them for many years. Thank you for doing this video. 🤗🤗
Dr. Chaos, Vice: Project Doom, GunNac, Zen Intergalactic Ninja, Bucky O'Hare, The Lone Ranger, Shadow of the Ninja and especially Guerilla War. Really great games on the NES that not everyone has heard of.
Amazing video! North & South has AMAZING version on PAL Amiga. If you got this try to click on photographer's butt :) I don't know how is it on NES version but if you do that on the Amiga it will give you a good laugh :)
***** Also interesting is that "North and South" design and art style was based upon a Belgium comic series "Les tuniques Bleues" (The Bluecoats in english) en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Les_Tuniques_Bleues Truly extraordinary game and unbeliveable fun to play!
+Chromotrigger It's a great game on the Amiga! Really good two player. I also liked Hostages (aka Rescue: The Embassy Mission) on the Amiga. Both of these were published by Infogrames in Europe. Both games look and play better on the Amiga but it's great to see them on consoles :)
Cowboy Kid was awesome. I rented it over and over. The multiple endings and such was awesome as hell. I had not heard of any other game aside from Cowboy kid and Princess Tomato. Great vid!
What a great job picking some hidden gems! I was surprised that I wasn't even familiar with a few. That and having North and South and Princess Tomato are my hidden gems as well. I love telling people one of my favorite games on NES is Princess Tomato in the Salad Kingdom. The reactions always make me laugh.
Great video, but just so you know, that is a white lion, not a tiger on that particular game. I mean, the game itself is called "Ghost Lion". I'm just going to chalk this up to a verbal slip because I refuse to allow myself to believe that you don't know the difference.
I have Kickle Cubicle on the famicom. It's one of those games on on the NES that makes you appreciate just how far they pushed the technology to the limit.
I stumbled upon your channel when I was looking for some decent PS3 games and since then I have watched every video and love it all. Metal Jesus, you do rock! 👊👊
I knew North and South felt familiar.I had played it back in the early 90's on an Amstrad Computer.Fan memories. MetalJesus was right, that this game had a PC feel to it.As i see on the almighty net ,the game was released in 1989 for the Commodore Amiga and Atari ST and ported later for NES, Amstrad CPC, MSX, DOS and ZX Spectrum.
Dude! I totally loved Rescue! It was a loaner from my cousin one summer. Never heard of it before that but it brings back so many memories seeing it on this list! Waking up early with a bowl of cereal starting up my Nintendo before my family took over the TV!
I find myself going back to your hidden gem videos time and time again for reminders. I often wonder whether or not someone watching these recognises their old cartridges they once owned. As Riggs held up his copy of 'Cowboy Kid' with half the label missing, I had a funny image of some guy, in his 40s, working a night shift at a security desk somewhere screaming "Hey!! That was my copy!!!" Also, to add to the controversy... you've managed to recommend two games in one video here; one about the American Civil War and one with the picture of a Native American's face missing... haha!
You guys should do a Retro Gaming Championship.. Get sponsors. Trophy and prizes.. You could do a NES , Sega catagory then a all Retro Gaming Championship including even Atari
I loove this dude's enthusiasm! Bring him back, please. Love the show, man!
+dallasINtokyo We had a lot of fun in this video... laughing and joking. It was great.

My brother owned it. The mission with no radar is tricky
I rented and played a lot of North & South!
I lived in Electronics Boutique and Software Etc. I have the BEST memories from those two stores. Great friends that worked there that I got to know. I miss the 90's SO much.
There was one called Kickmaster - a cross between Castlevania and Karateka. Incredible game that I most likely replayed hundreds of times.
Crystalis, The Guardian Legend, Little Nemo: The Dream Master, Legendary Wings.
Guardian legend is the best shooter on NES I think
Hell yeah, Little Nemo was my game for the NES.
Crystalis, Little Nemo, and Legendary Wings were my JAMS!!!
Crystalis is amazing. Legendary wings is very good just brutal
Great vid as usual Metal Jesus and Riggs!
+RetroGamingTube 85 Thanks, yo!
Two goats, rgt n Riggs :)
John has really stepped in and added some more depth to your game collecting and your channel. Glad to see you guys are friends :)
+SuperJTthunder What a wonderful think to say. Thank you!
+John Riggs: RIGG'd Games great video. your awsome bro..iv been collecting NES & SNES games as of late, appreciate the gems.
John Riggs: RIGG'd Games Great suggestion with Rescue The Embassy Mission. I had this game and totally forgot about it. When I saw it in this video my face lit up, and the memories came rushing back. So thank you for reminding me of this awesome game.
Shadow of the Ninja, Conquest of the Crystal Palace, Karnov, Cobra Triangle, and Mendel Palace. Few I would recommend.
+sgirardacus7 Great suggestions!
A friend of mine had Karnov and Cobra Triangle when we were kids. I freaking loved those games, especially Cobra Triangle.

+RetroR0bbie I remember buying Power Blade and Power Blade 2, both for about $5, in the late 90s. Glad I did!
Yea I didn't even know of Power Blade 2 back then to be honest. But id assume all NES games were dirt cheap then. Around that time I was playing a lot of PS1.
GIJoe is so underrated. One of the best side-strollers on NES.
More John Riggs so much a gentleman and you too Metal Jesus. Thank you for the smile and the passion for good games. Be safe.
I had North & South on Amiga. It's a great game. :)
No matter how long I have been gaming videos like this give me new inspiration. Thank you so much for sharing I got lots to try now!
princess tomato in the salad kingdom is awesome. especially when you get the giant robot part hahaha. sad that xexyz, or werewolf, even whomp em, or astyanax was not included 😢
North vs South and Princess Tomato in the Salad Kingdom, 2 of my faves growing up. Remember them very well.
The title says "nintendo nintendo entertainment system"
+Zane X Yep. That's because for search engine results you want BOTH
sounds reasonable..
Hahahhahahahahahahhba
I didn't even notice, it's like an eBay title
I grew up with Kickle Cubicle and I HIGHLY recommend it to any NES owners or puzzle fans. the graphics are great and the different food themed worlds are colorful and interesting. Brings back a ton of fond memories.
Here are some my favorite hidden gems for the NES:
FaXanadu
Legacy of the Wizard
The Guardian Legend
Sky Shark
Trojan
Dragon Spirit
Solstice
Fuck yeah, faxanadu is awesome.
Or guardian legend... love the music
+Dark Mountain Productions
Faxanadu and Trojan are great stuff.
+Dark Mountain Productions
Nice picks! I never played Solstice, but the rest are easily among the greatest on the NES.
So I've heard. When I was a kid, one of my friends had it, and swore by both its difficulty and overall awesomeness.
I'm am so happy you mentioned Rescue. Definitely one excellent NES title. I got it from a cousin who got rid of their 20 game collection. And I am so happy to run across it.
As always, let us know what other NES Hidden Gems are out there. We'll try to include it in our next video!
Here's some games I've heard of more recently but never knew of when I was young:
Mighty Final Fight: Basically Final Fight on NES with the art style more like River City Ransom.
+Eric Schell Man, I LOVED Iron Tank!
+SlyBeast I LOVE Flying Warriors
Hidden Gem Racer on NES - Knight Rider
Its one of the first racers that utilized all of the mechanisms on the dash of inside the vehicle, forcing you to pay close attention while driving.
Heading down to the game room to pull some of these titles... nice work.
Eureka!!! "Rescue: the embassy mission" is one of the first videogames I every played on my cousins comodore system. I were never able to find the name later on, so I could not go back to it. Thanks to you two I will now be able to do just that. Thanks a million.
The Guardian Legend - I'll be curious to see your opinions on that one.
+Ryan AirZonkWorldChamp Inbetween these days, more of a cult classic but yeh I suppose it could pass. Not to mention that game alone is better than this entire list imo.
+Ryan AirZonkWorldChamp One of the greatest!
Awe, such a heartwarming story hearing that your now wife got you the princess tomato game back then when you were just dating ❤️
$150 😬 for that game now.
If my girlfriend got me such an offensive game thatd be the end of the relationship!
I love his energy, he's so excited about games, I can really relate.
Finally a hidden a gems that isn't all Japanese anime...
I LOVED THIS VIDEO!
My 2 favorite games were "Kicker Cubical" and "Princess Tomatoe", but I completely forgot what they were called, as it has been many years since I've played them. I have been trying to find them for many years.
Thank you for doing this video. 🤗🤗
ULTRA Games were called PALCOM Games in Europe. We didn't have ULTRA here :o
The more you know
GreenSoap doesn’t matter what the company was called, just Konamis way of getting around Nintendo’s limits for quality
***** Also interesting is that "North and South" design and art style was based upon a Belgium comic series "Les tuniques Bleues" (The Bluecoats in english) en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Les_Tuniques_Bleues
Truly extraordinary game and unbeliveable fun to play!
+Michał Marek That makes sense. North and South just feels like a PC game.
Yes. The Amiga version is indeed the best. The NES version is ok, but nothing in comparison :)
+Michał Marek I've always thought of that game as a C-64 title. I was kind of surprised that neither of them knew it was on the home computers 1st.
Cowboy Kid was awesome. I rented it over and over. The multiple endings and such was awesome as hell. I had not heard of any other game aside from Cowboy kid and Princess Tomato. Great vid!
Heard Metal Jesus, Saw Metal Jesus, Subbed within' 3.2 seconds =3
It's one of those games on on the NES that makes you appreciate just how far they pushed the technology to the limit.
john riggs is the man! :D
+1Muzition1 How can I be the man when YOU are the man?
+John Riggs: RIGG'd Games We have the Technology!
The Guardian Legend. One of the few NES titles that will hold my interest for more than 30 mins and probably my favorite game on the system.
Call me crazy, but I loved T&C Surf Designs Thrilla's Safari.
I stumbled upon your channel when I was looking for some decent PS3 games and since then I have watched every video and love it all. Metal Jesus, you do rock! 👊👊
Loved playing south in north vs south, especially when you win and says you didn't read history books.
I thought I'd dreamed up Krion, homie. Thanks for the memory refresh!
that intro closeup on the planescape box: "miss those days"
I knew North and South felt familiar.I had played it back in the early 90's on an Amstrad Computer.Fan memories.
MetalJesus was right, that this game had a PC feel to it.As i see on the almighty net ,the game was released in 1989 for the Commodore Amiga and Atari ST and ported later for NES, Amstrad CPC, MSX, DOS and ZX Spectrum.
I love watching some of these older videos and always still looking for those hidden gems!
Dude! I totally loved Rescue! It was a loaner from my cousin one summer. Never heard of it before that but it brings back so many memories seeing it on this list! Waking up early with a bowl of cereal starting up my Nintendo before my family took over the TV!
Princess Tomato really is the ultimate weird game for NES, I too encountered it at a rental shop in the 90s
That was my copy!!!"
Also, to add to the controversy... you've managed to recommend two games in one video here; one about the American Civil War and one with the picture of a Native American's face missing... haha!
Yep, I played North and South as a child.. loved it!
Ghost Lion, remember playing that one too - as a young teen... Reminded me of Final Fantasy.
Black Manta, Monsters In My Pocket, Circus Caper, Mighty Final Fight, Kung Fu, Felix The Cat, Crash Dummies, Ferrari Grand Prix Challenge.
You guys should do a Retro Gaming Championship.. Get sponsors. Trophy and prizes.. You could do a NES , Sega catagory then a all Retro Gaming Championship including even Atari
Ooooh I love Kickle Cubicle, used to play it for hours as a kid. One of the very few NES games I've ever finished.
Kickle Cubicle, that was an absolute classic.
i remember playing most of these games as a kid. cowboy kid and north and south were my 2 favorite games growing up, i always rented them
