Chipping used to be my "par saver" stroke until last year. I replaced my wedges with the Cleveland CBX wedges and thought I needed to go through an adjustment period with the new wedges. Well, needless to say, IT WASN'T THE NEW WEDGES! Watched this video 5 TIMES and took my wedges to the range this week. Wow! All I can say is "WOW". Found it was me, not the clubs (now isn't THAT surprising!). It all came down to basics: playing off the inside of right foot, keeping feet together and knees bent, leaning SLIGHTLY forward, hands over left pocket. That's all it took! Chipping like a crazy man now! Saved par on at least 4 holes yesterday. Thanks for the tip--you are a BEAST! Watched the video again today and wrote everything down just to keep these setup thoughts in my head.
I use this very same technique that you use with weight forward, hands in front of the ball, zero wrist break, and a slight follow through and the results are palpable from day one. No other way to chip and my confidence went through the ceiling around the greens once I started using this technique. It’s good to see these videos as refreshers.
Thank you so much for this video! My chipping has been my weakest part of my game for the longest time until watching this video and working on these drills. Now I can walk up to just about any shot with confidence! Thanks again!!
I really appreciate these videos, the chip really is important for the driver shot also . The shoulders. Your lessons alone are great but yesterday I went to a pro for driver training .. the only thing he changed was my shoulders in the backswing and the “in the slot” for the follow through . A simple fix and amazing results. All shoulder position.[for me] what I found during your videos is that I realized the things I could not do and I could explain to the pro what my your terminology is and where I feel insecure ( french instructor ) . This is where your instruction is enormous!!! The pro is not a gold digger and he made the simplest of easy adjustments . They supplement each other . Now when I go back to your instruction I see you are doing exactly what my pro said . Horizontal shoulders take away, vertical shoulders on follow through arms connected . One hour and today practice alone starting with the chip lessons and finally the longer drives . Just stating it is great to learn and study and practice but a pro in conjunction with your videos can be the most rewarding training for every individual . I am motivated !!!
I like to use a 50 degree from 30 plus yard bunker shots and full swing. Make sure your taking sand and following through commiting to the shot and opening up towards target into follow through
Im 59, never played golf until 30, ruptured disk 20 years ago, live in mt so only get to play 5 months per year. Yesterday i had back to back 300 yard drives in the middle of the fairway because of “return butt to original position, do not try to fire hip because you’ll come out of position”. Awesome tip MSG! Thanks much!
Watching you take the club straight back and thru helped me tremendously with my chips. This visualization was incredibly helpful to me. It was very clear to see the path of the clubhead coming into contact with the ball and it made so much sense how the ball rolled up the face of the club. Thx!
Like the old school chip with the hybrid. When I carried a 5 wood, I would chip with it all the time for low runners. It was actually a mainstay shot on the PGA tour back in the 80s and 90s. Really great lesson. I am glad I subscribed!
Hi Matt, stumbled across this older video. Usually watch your more up to date ones. I spend about 5 hrs a week at my local short game area. After watching your previous short game videos, l have become very slick with a gap and sand wedge in my hands. So much so, that my playing partners are asking, how do you do this shot, or how do I do that shot? It's amazing the different ball flights you can get, using the 3 wedges, just by opening the toe slightly, or with swing plain. Thanks again for your excellent content. Always will watch.
Great video!!! I have been struggling with chip shots recently and just tried this outside on my mat. Great contact and could hear that wonderful "click" of solid contact. Keep up the great work you do, we all truly appreciate your sincere demeanor and commitment to help all of us amatuer golfers :)
I’ve been doing this short game chipping drill and it has really been helpful… for some reason the flop shot is the one I have the most confidence in so far? Thanks for these drills!
Net 71 on my round today. That's two in a row. Still can improve consistency in my irons and with driver as I game some of the things I've learned from this practice series.
You weren’t kidding about the difference between the first two drills. My accuracy skyrocketed after trying to hit those open face ones. Contact on these shots is getting much much better.
Spent a couple hours working on this on the weekend. Tough drill with the open 60 off tight lie but seems to have helped, I have a lot more confidence with the square ones. Thanks
just to build confidence to know you can do it with any club, it’s mainly for feel but the only reason i could to use one is if your wedges are lost or broken and you have an odd ball club to rely on
try opening the club slightly more to swing face angle to right a bit. might have to swing slightly harder due to higher flight but it won't take much to move it right.
Used the flop shot successfully twice today. Love it. Would be helpful to see your ball position (face on view) when you are showing different shots. Thanks
Mr Short Game: You are the man. I love all your videos. You have helped my game so much it’s ridiculous! My friends and family can’t believe my progress. Thank you!! Mike “49”
Lots of fun doing the drills around the green, for me it was always a weakness and now its a strength due to time practicing. Took me about 6 months of practice though, slow learner LOL. Now for the bunker play that's my next challenge :-).
Was leaving everything short today - glad for the practice - the bump and run with the hybrid sure helped my confidence with that shot. Maybe will start to use it instead of the putter when more than inches off the green.
I was working on chipping this morning before I watched this video. I couldn’t control my distance. I had a wide stance which led to a longer takeaway. I was overshooting my target. Back to the range I go.
Been practicing short game a lot. How much? Practically every day. I tend to want to plant both feet at a left angle to feel more stable and easier to turn left for a relaxed follow-through. Help me understand the forward weight on the left foot. I always feel off balance. Thanks very much. Like your candid approach.
My goal this summer was get under 80 it’s mid July and shot 74 the other day! You shortgame were a big part of that happening my online teacher ty Sir! ✌️🇨🇦🏌🏽♂️🕳⛳️
Great video MSG tho i am a year late 😃👍. I have been using only my 52 degree SW or PW most of the times. I also use 7 -9 iron if the greens are slow. Works wonderfully and needs to practice at least 10=15 minutes a day 🙂👍👍. Thanks for the clip!
Yeah I second wjhall's question ... the hybrid chip seems so touchy ... where does the 9i chip and run fail, such that the hybrid chip and run is a better choice???
The hybrid chip comes in handy when you’re off the green in the slightly taller grass. The narrower face of the hybrid will go through the grass a little better than a wider putter, or where you don’t want to risk chunking a wedge.
Just saw your 'The Best Chipping Drills to Fix Your Golf Game!' Video. Yes, I practice this as I chip 10 times a round. I'm conscious of my weight being on the forward side ... so my club handle always forward of the club head; even after contact. This helps me avoid 'chilly dipping', my weight going on my back foot, and it focuses me to see the loft of the club lift the ball. Now .... it appears your right hand pushes forward passed your left after contact. I Can you explain.
Hi MrShortGame I have been practicing my short game a lot because of you and I am getting better feel. Still need to improve and on that note in your opinion for a mid handicapper does it matter what type of ball to use for example high performance ball or a Titleist Tour Soft type of ball.
At first I was concerned about your pink golf balls, thought maybe someone threw a red shirt in the washing machine with your golf balls. Hahahaha 😅 Loving your practice sessions. Cheers
Thanks for the video, but I am really having trouble with the tight lies. I try to use the bounce and continue to blade or duff it about 6 inches in front of me. What about hitting the ball first instead of sliding the bounce under the ball? Thanks again.
Have a look at Steve Johnson's YT video on tight lies. In summary he uses the toe of his wedge ( one with the toe and heel grind) standing closer to the ball , with the face open so the grind part of the bounce slips under the ball and lifts it up onto the green. I tried it yesterday and with a slight cut path, out to in, it worked well.
When you chip do you use left or right hand as your dominant hand. For my regular iron shots I use left hand dominate but for my putting I use right. Still trying to figure it out for chipping. I play right handed clubs.
So in the first couple drills is that the shot you’d want to play in that situation? Like not much green to work with so you flop it up there so it stops faster? And use chip and run for further flags? I probly would chip and run in almost every situation I can unless I have to get over something. Please someone explain 😬
First two types of chips, one using bounce and the other square, everything else is the same. When would you use each type of chip. Do you use the one that you can do the best. Do the condition dictate which one to use.
Hey MattGreat stuff love the 5 stroke challenge. I am up to 30 in a row for 3ft circles. It has really improved the putting game.Do you have any advice for the mental aspect of the game? I can execute the drills really well on the range but when I am on the course playing it doesn't seem to translate. I am assuming it the mental game that needs practice but not sure. Any Advice Thanks once again great stuff
Is this not a really high tariff shot to play? The safer option is a) putter if possible then b) putting stroke with a PW/9/8 iron is it not? For me this would only come into play if I was well below the height of the green and the bump and run wasn’t an option
@@MrShortGame Thank you -just can't seem to dial in roll out distance is the main drawback. Again thanks. PS have you done any driver tempo tips? I just started watching your subscription.

Use a club with enough loft to hit the green, 60 degree wide open on a tight lie? Thats a Pro golfer shot..Gap Wedge..relaxed chip & run
Great instruction. Keep it coming.👍🏌⛳🇺🇸😀

Short game coming on great, need to make some adjustments as majority are slightly left of my intended target. !!!!!
try opening the club slightly more to swing face angle to right a bit. might have to swing slightly harder due to higher flight but it won't take much to move it right.
Try holding it off a bit through and post impact whilst still turning through low left

Thank you! Great series. Scores already coming down! Looking to get a 60 degree wedge. How many degrees of bounce on yours in this video?
60 is hard to hit, I just use a 56 sand wedge.
It is great you are taking my advice for practicing your short game with the same balls as you do on the course.
Good lesson. Now, how do I transfer this to the golf course. I seem to be ok on the range/practice green but on the course, not so much.
going right now to try this. makes perfect sense.

3 shots everybody needs, good work . One thing noone does is actually show the grip of these 3 shots.
At first I was concerned about your pink golf balls, thought maybe someone threw a red shirt in the washing machine with your golf balls. Hahahaha 😅 Loving your practice sessions. Cheers
I like the grip to lay between the 2 palm pads of my left or upper hand for chipping and short greenside pitch shots!😉

how do u decide on the distance as 2 which short club u use to chip the distance req.d
