    Clay i want to thank you for all you videos. I started playing golf May 2019. I started with a game improving set or clubs I purchased about 10 years ago. I did have them extended for my hight. I played twice with them and went to a driving range a few times when my youngest son wanted to try the game. In May 2019 I asked a friend if he would teach me how to play golf. After about 3 weeks on the course I fell in love with the game. I felt silly with that 150$ set i purchased. I went to the pro shop at Tashua Knolls golf course in Trumbull Ct and asked the pro shop and club builder Mike to build me a set of clubs. He built me a set of Callaway Apex irons and a mix of hybrids and drivers. Thay are intermediate clubs. In June that year I was hitting 115. At the end of the season I was hitting 100. I have learned so much from your videos at the end of the season 2019 I couldn't wait to play after the winter. My goal was to hit 90 after the snow melted spring 2020. I ended this season with the best chipping most of the guys I play with and strangers that would fill a foursome when we played. Guess what im trying to say is your videos and how you speak and explain the techniques really helped me. I hope someday I get to see you in person. I tell everyone about your videos. You are the best youtube golf teacher out there. My goal for next year is a consistent 85. Thank you for all the time you spend teaching me how to play. Im 6'6" they call me BigJoe. Thanks again. Stay safe and healthy. Hope someday to play behind you or just on the same course the same day. Peace

    I went to my local golf course (Royal Lara) and practiced Clay's advice...If u set up with regards to ball position (1 club-head width), left foot flared open a little and practice 3 or 4 or 5 swing moves concentrating on left knee in on back-swing, decent back-swing (like 7.30-9.00 o'clock, staring at that small piece of grass in front of the ball and allowing your-self to finish with left wrist straight, left arm straight on contact, etc, the chipping stroke does work. I also practiced with just my left arm and do 10-20 practice shots just clipping the ground. Just need to work out what club you can use of tight lies the best. Best idea, forget initially going for a target, just concentrate on getting Clay's idea of chipping down pat and on percentage what is the best club that works on 2 types of greens. Flat or severe up-slope (like 3-6 feet from ball onto green and unable to putt, etc). I found that the 9 iron was better for shortish type chips up to 15 feet flat and sw or lw for severe up-slopes onto green. Turn your worst game into your A game!!! Yay for Clay (hey, that rhymes!!!)...

    Clay, you are my go to golf instructor. I use to hack at it 20+ years ago with no instruction. Horrible! I sliced better than any "as seen on TV" cut through a boot, slice a tomato kitchen knife 2000! Thanks to you I have all but eliminated my slice. I'm learning correct technique and consistency. Played my 1st 18 today and shot 125 legit with penalty strokes. I know that's not good by any means but most all my balls were playable and that's saying a lot! My short game killed me but thanks to this video I know I can improve. Thanks again. You're helping us hackers more than you know.

    I just want you to have an update. I have sliced my whole life. My distance has been terrible. I started watching your videos last year and focusing on my technique. I improved very little last year but did slice a lot less, chipped with much more confidence. People noticed as well that my pitches from 60 yds off or so did better than these guys who have been killing me for years.
    I continued watching your driver , irons, and chipping pitching videos this winter, and have a school behind me deserted from Covid . I take a bucket of balls, a 3 iron and a 9. I hit with the three toward a target, and hit second with the nine as I walk up to the target . Some days I take a seven and a 56degree. Because of the changes I've made watching your videos, my slice has been eliminated, my distance because I'm using my hips and legs has skyrocketed, and I'm even getting some lag. Thanks

    That was a great lesson from Clay! I was an instructor back in the early ’90’s in Scottsdale, AZ and would like to add something that Clay talked about might be beneficial for beginners or higher handicap golfers in determining which shot to use, is to remember that “chipping is minimum airtime with maximum roll, and pitching is maximum airtime with minimum roll”. Regarding distance, we taught to determine from your ball position that if 1/3 of the distance from your ball to the pin would not get you safely to the green, that would determine you to pitch instead of chip; and if 1/3 of the distance from your ball to the pin would provide enough room to get you safely on the green, you would chip. Once you become a better player, this rule would not necessarily apply as there are so many club selections to get you to the hole based on your ability, creativity, green slope and wind.

    Clay, I am a PGA Class A Instructor in Florida and this is a great lesson to teach the differences in these two techniques. I appreciate the way you break down with simplistic information the action that needs to occur. Few realize the release points of a proper short game shot and by showing them the knee pivot plays a critical role in stopping a "flip" you made a routine lesson go to the next level. Cheers.

      Could not agree more! For the longest time I have felt the club more with my hands in the short game and I do okay. But that key with the knee pivoting really does control the club dramatically and prevents that stall like you mentioned. It helps the whole action be much more fluid and nobody ever mentions it!

    Clay, I was always taught that a chip shot, always rolled out more than it flew, and a pitch shot, always flew more than it rolls. I was also taught that I wanted to pace off the distance from the pin, to where I would want to land the ball on the green. Then from there back to where my pitch was. That would decide which club that I would use, and what type of shot I would use would depend upon the terrain. For example, I would use a higher trajectory shot to go over an object, such as a greenside bunker. I was also taught, that I could chip with almost every club in the bag. I used to practice chipping with everything from a 60° wedge, to a 5 iron. I really like your videos, and will most definitely continue watching as I have subscribed to your RUclips channel, and look forward to all of your updates.

My last outing, which really was only my second on the course, I pretty much stuck to the techniques taught on this video, and chipped and pitched pretty good. I only chunked once and bladed once mainly due to the lies. I think this is a very good video.

    I came here after watching (and trying to execute) Phil Mickelson's "Secrets of the Short Game" video section on chipping and pitching - where he insists on the "lock and hold" method for both shots. Frankly, it was a disaster and only after much time working on it was I able to make clean contact. Even then, the results were very lackluster. Mickelson also suggests using a 60 degree wedge for ALL chips and pitches - which means to me having to vary your stroke constantly to get different results with the same club.
    This presentation, on the other hand, is very easy to understand, to execute, and it feels much more natural and intuitive - especially when chipping (even longer chips). By varying club selection on the chips (depending on the shape of the chip you want) you can use very much the same repeatable swing. You have a new subscriber!

    What if the grass is a little taller/rougher, or the lay is different? Some courses dont have such big skirts and I'm "pitching" from deeper stuff. I use a 56 with weight heavily on my back leg and ball back of stance. It works for me most of the time, but not as well off the skirt. I'll give these methods a go.

    • @TopSpeedGolf
      @TopSpeedGolf  4 года назад +1

      If the ball is deep in the rough then you will need to chop down on it because if you come in shallow then the grass will just eat it up. I think big advnce to me to hit the ball well was just after watching this video. anybody who want to swing well should play this video again again and give it a chance enough to feel to hit the ball with your body and specially bellybutton. trying using sand wedge hit the ball streight and change to high lofted clubs step by step. it will help you to feel throwing your club dead streight. this video enlighten me. thanks alot.

    Great video on chipping and pitching mechanics. I really liked the slow motion video. What I learned is how much body rotation is used in these shots and not the hands so much. The pitching swing is just a bit longer, with more wrist hinge on the backswing. I've been struggling with my short game and look forward to working on this. The pitching swing looks like a mini full swing and the chipping swing is more like a putting stroke - simpler and more pendulum. I am using to my hands and arms and need to get my body turning more and opening up after impact on these shots.

    Interesting differences in your video, Clay, compared to one Phil Mickelson did a few years ago. Phil said the big mistake most amateurs make is centering the ball between their feet.

    Awesome videos Clay. Do you have any wisdom you are willing to disseminate regarding pitching adjacent to the green on very very hard ground... which I seriously struggle with? This issue costs me 5 strokes per round, regularly.

    My tip for pitching is in your backswing, imagine your club head as a door. When you go back you open the door, and when you go forward, you close the door. Then try and swing down and then there you go.

    One thing no youtube golfer has ever taught properly is into the grain chip shots. Usually because they havent cracked the code perfectly yet. Do you think you can put up a video for an into the grain chip shot lesson?

    There are three fundamental golf swings: mashing (standard golf swing), chipping and putting. Pitching is a fractional mash, i.e., just like mashing only smaller in scale, being controlled by the leading arm and hand. Chipping is virtually a vertical swing, controlled by the forearms and trailing hand. The vertical motion of the club head produces backspin, which induces the ball to check up.

    Great video and thanks. I've been playing 4 wedges for the last few years and it's been great for gapping fuller shots, but it's also given me a little uncertainty about which shot to play when I'm say, 5 to 30m from the green. This will help a lot - for years I've tried so hard to get below 4, bouncing up and down between 4 and 8. Perhaps this will help with some certainty - a very necessary ingredient! Cheers and thanks from Aust - Dave

    A key that people don't pay enough attention to is the need to use some upper body and hip rotation to ensure there isn't a breakdown in wrist involvement. You can see this in this video; there is no "flipping" of the club with the wrists.

    • @TopSpeedGolf
      @TopSpeedGolf  5 лет назад

      Hi Bobby, thanks for the comment. You are 100% correct. You gotta keep the hips moving through the ball or you may flip it. Play well! Quentin | TSG Instructor
