This is probably one of the best videos chipping, honestly. A very flexible way to approach chipping. Not a lot of videos cover every area of the chipping. You've highlighted the crucial and simple areas of chipping: STANCE, DISTANCE TO BALL, GRIP, SWING PLANE, SWING MOMETUM. Some videos are too lasered in single aspects of chipping. This is a solid overall wisdom of the chipping game!

Eric im almost in tears typing this. I watched your video three days ago. I've had the chipping yips for about 18 months. It has reduced me to a point I have actually considered quitting the game of golf. Like I said I watched your video and I took three things from it that I put into play straight away. #1. Grip down. Moving my grip down the shaft. #2 Wrist hinge. Don't be afraid of a little wrist hinge, but with that said don't be silly and over do it. Use feel!. #3 Swing plain. (and what was most influential for me). Straight back on the take away is ok. Outside is even better as it brings the bounce of the club into play. This changed everything for me as my inside bias take-away made my leading edge dig in which lead to chunks and/or bladed shots.l I have also used #4 that I introduced myself. Keep the head still through-out the entire shot. Hips should move but head still. I pitched and chipped the best I ever have. Thank you. Your simplistic approach to the wedge game is so beneficial to someone like me. Thank you mate. Will be watching all of your clips from here on

Why the heck hasn't anyone else managed to explain chipping in simple terms like this in the past. It makes sense and it isn't over-thought. I tried this and it works - particularly standing closer to the ball, shaft more upright and gripping down to compensate. You're some kind of magician Eric - thanks yet again.Keep 'em coming because my scores are going the right direction thanks to subscribing to your channel and committing to what you're teaching. Don't suppose we could convince you to move to Canada could we?

Great video Eric! I was lucky enough to attend a short game clinic a few years back with a guy named Stan Utley and he had a very similar method to yours, except he taught us that taking it back 'slightly' inside and shut is actually a shot he plays to keep the ball low and running, but most of his chips are played with the club going back on plane(or slightly outside) with the ball well forward and shaft vertical to ensure the bounce is fully engaged, but yeah he only takes it back slightly inside and shut when he wants it to go low and run, he plays this from the same set up i mentioned earlier, ball forward, shaft vertical. Not to boast but I am one of the best chippers at my club all because of his teaching methods. I see a lot of his method in your videos also!

Eric, I've been playing for 30+ years and over the last five years my chipping game has gotten hideous. I have often felt like I have the 'chipping yips'. I've spent most of this season alternating between skulling and chunking my chip shots despite spending at least 30 minutes a week near a practice green trying different things to improve my chipping.
I watched your video last week before a short practice session and I liked the results I got right away. Today I finally had a chance to get back for a second practice session. I hit 30 chip shots (12 SW, 9 PW and 9 8-iron). I chipped three balls in (and left a fourth 3 inches from the hole). I haven't chipped a ball in the hole in years.
Thank you for your videos. They've helped me improve my game and I'm excited to get to the course again.

The toughest chips for most are the little nudgers from just off the green. So easy to decelerate and flick the wrists on those. Best answer is of course to keep the hands going through to the target negating the flick. Sometimes a little chop down on to the ball works well on such shots but there is an element of risk.

One of the best chipping videos (and tips) I have found, and believe me, I have seen pretty much all the popular chipping videos on RUclips! I also practice a lot of chipping and pitching and yet could never develop a sound technique. Until now...Thanks to Eric's tip about STANDING CLOSE to the ball, I just tried a practice session with unbelievable results! In pretty much all the videos that I have seen, NO ONE has ever mentioned standing CLOSE to the ball. I will say that in Jack Nicklaus' video on 'How I Play Golf', he does say he keeps his head literally above the ball on chips. However, Jack did not emphasize that point like Eric did. Try standing close to the ball, and you will find how much more accurately you can control the path of the clubhead. My Achilles heel has been the chipping department, and now I am looking forward to my next round to try out my 'new' technique! By the way, I usually shoot in the 80's but curse myself for racking up many short game shots. I am hoping I have found the fix that was eluding me. Thanks Eric!

This video is a revelation. It succinctly touches on the major features of solid chipping and it transformed my chipping immediately (HCP 13). Maybe I should have known better by now, but I had at least four of Eric's "don't do" habits (feet too far apart; too far from ball; I swung inside 'the plane'; ...and I accelerated too much through the ball). Chipping transformed.

Two things that’s I got from your video that I’m sure is destroying my short game is that I take the club inside on the backswing and I have a closed face going back. I can’t wait to put all of your keys to the test. Great video and I’ll check back once I’ve fixed my chipping woes.

Watched this video this morning went and played didn’t chunk or thin one the whole round just have to get use to distance also the long back shorter follow through is hard to get use to but I know your right about that see tour players do it all the time. I think this is the one.... I watch way too many videos

Hey Eric...long-time admirer and viewer of your videos. You have a great teaching style--you've got all aspects covered, especially your economical use of words. You are an outstanding communicator and teacher, right at the very top on RUclips. One of these days I might like to visit in person...dad taught at Lehigh in the late 60s and we enjoyed our time in the Bethlehem area. On golf, I'm curious as to your particular choice of club or clubs on chipping. What do you like to use, and what methods/techniques around the green do you use? I need to get a reliable system going If I could get back to a reliable chipping system, I'd score consistently under 80. Chipping causes me to lose strokes, so I need to get a good system going...I am dedicated to practice. Thanks!

Thanks, Pat! Really appreciate the kind words and support!
I use a 56* SW about 80-85% of the time for shots....I find that most players need to get really good with one main SW club for the majority of shots to handle different lies, distances, etc.
I then use a 9i or 7i for bump and runs when I have a lot of green to work with about 15-20% of the time.
      Hope that helps!
If you search my name and "chipping" here you will see more on this...we also have a full masterclass with a practice plan...this is how I practice and what I teach all my players:

Excellent video. Looks like you've overcome the chipping yips, which I've been battling off and on for years after it used to be the best part of my game, so your success is encouraging. I've never thought about it before, but think now I used to be much closer to the ball with a very narrow stance. That and the description of the swing plane gives me a really clear picture of what to practice. I like the way you cover good fundamentals and encourage them without being dogmatic about them.

    • @CogornoGolf
      @CogornoGolf  5 лет назад

Appreciate the kind words! I hope that it helps...as someone who has had the yips as you've mentioned the key for me was getting the mechanics corrected....the pieces discussed in this video along with learning to use the bounce changed everything. I also learned a lot from a guy names James Sieckmann if you don't know of him I would search his name..

Eric, your videos are great man and I just want to say first that I have learned a lot from your videos and I am getting much closer to getting myself to a consistent 3 or 4 HDCP. I don't want to stir the pot, and I know with chipping there is a lot of feel involved, so to each his own, but I do not completely agree that a player must have to match the hinge on both ends of the chipping swing as this can be very dangerous for an amateur playing that is working to break 100, 90, and even 80. One prime example of this is from one of the best players to ever chip, Phil Mickelson with the hinge and hold method. He introduces a lot of hinge and almost has none coming back through the the ball and preaches the leading edge to stay under the ball to hit clean, crisp chips. If teaching players to hinge a bunch on the way back and hinge a lot going through the ball, they will not become consistent at hitting flush chips and that can introduce skulling and hitting fat shots. I caution amateur players with adding hinge to the follow through as it takes high skill to pull this off.
I do agree that in some cases, hinging on the way through is necessary depending on the shot trajectory, but the average player does not need to do that to shoot under an 80. Obviously, I am not a scratch golfer yet, but I am working to get there.
Thank you for all of your videos and the detail you put into them. I just want to keep looking out for my fellow amateurs trying to learn the game at a more simple level.

best tip I have gotten on chipping - the back swing mimics the follow through - thank you!!! Also, do you open the face more if you want it to pop in the air and go just a short distance?
