What a superb video. You break down all components of the chip shot into easy to understand segments. I know at one time you were close to having the chip yips, I’m at the same stage right now.. I am confident this video is going to help me immensely. I’m also having chipping lessons, and you use the same method as my coach. But it will really help to use your video in conjunction with his teaching, because you explain it so clearly and simply and I can watch it whenever I want to re-enforce my lessons. You are going to help improve my enjoyment of the game because at the moment being around the greens is destroying me. Now I’m off to practice. Great job and thanks.
Love to hear that my friend! I trust you will get it sorted with your coach. I'm here to help if you need some guidance! www.cogornogolf.com we can work together. Keep me updated
I am learning SO much as a beginner. Your videos are the most informative, easiest to watch. My husband is a low handicap golfer and he was "kind of watching" some of your chipping videos with me before I went to practice, and I caught him using your tips as well!
Eric, I have just started watching your videos. I am an old school technique chipper. When I'm on it's good. When I'm off it's really bad. I am going to work on this technique over the cold winter up here in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. You are the best teacher that I have found on RUclips and have saved a pile of your videos. Cheers and stay safe Pat.
Appreciate the kind words, Pat! I hope these help....also hope to do some more on chipping moving forward. I have the same issues as you....got A LOT better when I learned a lot from James Sieckmann. Check out his short game stuff if you haven't already
Just been out in the garden/back yard practicing. Hit the best chips I’ve ever hit in my life. The ball was rolling up the club face, lovely crisp contacts. After years of suffering it felt like I’d scored a touch down in the Super Bowl or winner in the Champions League Final. I was punching the air with happiness. Other golfers who’ve suffered with chipping will understand. There is hope! Keep working and trying guys. Thanks Eric. Now all I’ve got to do is take it on the course ......
Love the "holster follow through." My hands tend to tend down the line too far.and I don't pivot through enough and this is a really helpful image. It is really great to get guest instructors too Eric. Would like to have seen Robert hit one as each coach has subtleties. Short game is truly a game within a game.
I watched this video a couple of weeks ago or so and have been implementing these techniques in my backyard and the few times I’ve played my chipping both long and short is ten times better. Contact is way better and because of that distance control is way better. My keys, stand a little closer left shoulder more down at address. Open club face a little in backswing but the key to me is clubhead exits to the left. That is the main key that makes this all work .
Appreciate it! In reality its a mix of both. Definitely need to use the arms and hands, but a lot of people have NO body...so we wanted to emphasize that you need SOME body!
Finally I figured out why I had so many fat chunky chip shots: I had too much secondary tilt. I just narrowed my stance but kept my shoulder tilt. Now I have a hard time to have my shoulders leveled, but once they’re leveled, even not perfectly, oh my, the ball flies to the sky.....Thanks a lot!
What a great video very clear and concise great job Eric thank you. One concept i am struggling with in my chipping is, when you get to waist high toe to the sky and you start your downswing do i square up the face again or hold it open and square it up with my pivot.
He sounds more Like a Scot than a Texan! Although holster your club and not squeeze your bagpipes was missing but an excellent thought, anyway. I like the fact you repeat your tips it’s a great reminder.
When you said you should have the toe up for this basic chip shot where is the face of the club pointing? I'm still working on the shank/skull coming across the ball. Bring that magnetic device for your LIVE session and do the back swing on the chip shot. Thanks a zillion!!
Hi Eric, Found this video on basic chippong very helpful. Could you get Robert to come back and do similar videos with you for basic pitch and greenside bunker shots and maybe fairway bunker shots too? That would be great
I’m a good shortgame player, but these basic fundamental key thoughts is a game-changer. Amazingly good checkpoint thoughts. The Bump N run-video is also golden. Is there a lob-video too?

Thanks for opening up my eyes on how to chip properly. Do you have any videos on short and long chip shots from bad lies or would the same basic principles apply?
Hey Paul! Not too many videos on chipping lies....will have to put that on the list! Here is some on different slopes: ruclips.net/video/IOUQLsx27gE/видео.html
Wow. Eric that level shoulders thing I just did in a mirror and it feels so goofy as you said so I'm going to have to start implementing it to improve my contact. I do struggle with duffs and thins so excess shouldn't tilt could explain it.
this is perfect. i don'y think the average player understands how much the body is used for this shot. it's not all hands and arms. and whereas i can do this stroke just as demonstrated all day long, when i step into the shot...something makes me lower the club head into the ground. of course the speed of the stroke is not figuring turf interaction and i get the ball half way there. rrrrrrrrrr! work in progress.
Looks like you have the ball a little closer to the right foot? Ive heard people say having the ball in the middle, but I prefer it a touch to the right of the middle.
I would say just back of middle good for stock shots! Talked more about that in some of these may help ruclips.net/video/rMTw5aDTPzU/видео.html ruclips.net/video/gRDGdkIyg8s/видео.html ruclips.net/video/LQLV1YSJNZ0/видео.html
Great video Eric thank you. I do not accelerate with my arms after impact basically my arms stop at impact sometimes when I do 10 yards chipping and sometimes I use my right hand unnecessarily at impact even I know no hand activity should be involved. By looking at this video, I think I may need to pivot and chest rotation and extension to keep the arms and shaft beyond the impact. Would you agree? Thanks.
Yes I would agree. Put a bucket or ball between your arms if needed and learn to get your ribcage, core, chest moving the club back and through ruclips.net/video/7-IIGQfBVdc/видео.html ruclips.net/video/rwTlDWwVoxs/видео.html ruclips.net/video/i5I9EATrxrM/видео.html
I think, I need to use more my arms and NOT MY HANDS during chipping. When my hands (particularly the trailing hand) take over at or before impact, the hands speed up the arms and hence arms do not continue through as they should and also they get bent. As soon as the clubface hit the ball mostly by the hands and not by the arms connected, this causes lot of inconsistencies. I am saying this because I was doing 6 years ago or so almost no hand action and my arms were also much better extended...so going forward I need to feel my arms are in charge and not the hands in the context of chipping.. Now in full swing, I start with lower body of course and use more body motion but even here I should take out the hand action.
The toe-up backswing to add loft tip doesn't seem to jive with the anti-slice face / wrist condition at first parallel of full swing. Is this because for a full swing you want the ball to come out lower (delofted) and longer, but in a green-side chip you are more interested in height (adding loft) and not burying the leading edge into the turf behind the ball?
Another great video as I tried this yesterday during my practice and it went EXTREMELY well. Can you clarify the statement abt you "wouldn't do this with the driver"....would wouldn't want the toe up??? It's at abt the 11:07 mark. I thought with the driver you want loft....thanks for clarifying.
Thanks! With driver you want the clubface about the same angle as your back line. Just slightly tilted down. You want open for wedges for bounce and more loft Driver you want the face more square to the arc ruclips.net/video/uoz5jvrsTMA/видео.html
He says it is important to keep the weight favouring the lead side at set up and it is important to keep it there. How do you do this when there is a natural tendency to move the weight onto the trail foot on the backswing. How do you counter this and prevent weight from moving onto trail side?
At what point do you start to lose the wrist angles on the downswing, if you release to early surely you can hit it heavy. Also I find if the body stall a tiny bit on the downswing you also fat it. Weight forward or not
Hi, my strength is my pitching and chipping. I'm a plus 4 when it come to this. Now to me less is more. I agree with 95 percent of this and i do this myself but i study Jason day for his short game and it bloody works for me and people i have taught, now opening up the club face on the backswing is nonsense. To much going on and you dont do this in your full swing anymore so the chipping and pitching technique is a short version to the full swing. keeping the club face square to the arch is fuel proof and most top tour players feel they are cutting the shot or fading the chip shot and also in some cases fade a chip shot. What ever shot your trying to play. opening up the club face might work for him but so misleading for a stock shot. now it would be different it you was to do a high or more of a lop shot then by cupping the wrists in the backswing and keeping them there in the follow through works really well but i got this from a vid by tiger woods and this is a more advanced shot. sorry not a good video for you Eric
Great comments! much depends on the type of shot I am playing or who I am instructing, this video was more designed for a golfer who is definitely not a plus 4 like you, in general most average golfers chunk more than thin and have a difficult time getting the ball up and short with good contact. I have an advanced short game class that I conduct in Dallas mostly collage players and pros who attend this would be more the level that you would fit into. I remember playing with Seve and him telling me adding loft going back is good at the right time based on what you are trying to do and you are correct face rotation going back is perfect for flop shots bunker shots and short distance spinners.I wanted to show Eric during the video a great shot I learned from Seve called “Park the handle” however it was not suited for this audience in general, Seve played this shot at Turnberry off of a tight lie with 100 balls I could have maybe got a couple to stop short of the pin he hit it to a foot it was not a flop it went low and hit a wall (with a 56Degree sw not lob wedge)so I asked him what he did .weak right hand grip toe up add loft on backswing right palm to sky park the handle ...he was the best I ever saw.
Hi Eric, you say that it's a gradual release from the start of the downswing. If your wanting to hit a higher pitch would it still be a gradual release or a quicker release later in the downswing thanks

Eric - Great stuff here, thanks! How about weight distribution? I’ve always chipped with weight heavy on the front foot which then makes my shoulders not level. It feels strange to me to be playing level shoulders and weight evenly distributed.
I’m going back to the chipping green in the morning but first watching the Using the Bounce section in the members site (Full disclosure to readers here I am a member of Eric’s site and have been for a few months. I highly recommend it) since I struggle with contact issues (fats and thins).
Thanks, Chris! Appreciate the kind words my friend. I would say 50/50 would be fine. 60/40 left would be fine. 70/30 left could be fine Anything more than that can require a few adjustments. 60/40 left would be a good rule of thumb If you post a chip shot with your next updated I would be glad to take a look!
Hey Gerrie! I'd start with the ball in the middle of your stance and then you can play around with moving it BACK a touch (to steepen the angle of attack and launch the ball lower) or UP a touch (to shallow the angle of attack and launch the ball higher). Hope this is helpful!
I notice when you finish the chip shot your right foot is planted on the ground and your left toe is raised up. Is this the standard move for the legs??
Hey! I would say just back of middle for stock... Heres more info on that ruclips.net/video/rMTw5aDTPzU/видео.html ruclips.net/video/gRDGdkIyg8s/видео.html ruclips.net/video/LQLV1YSJNZ0/видео.html
There is no stock position. It varies based on lie, slope, how much green to work with, and pin location. Every shot around the green is different, so a stock position is limiting overall to versatility.
17:15 mark, begin video. Here he summarizes all the important key points, thus avoiding too much dialect throughout up this minute mark. Great info though.
Sorry about that! Here is more on chipping for ball position. I would say just back of middle for stock shots would be good Left arm will have some bend ruclips.net/video/rMTw5aDTPzU/видео.html ruclips.net/video/gRDGdkIyg8s/видео.html ruclips.net/video/LQLV1YSJNZ0/видео.html
Great video, very helpful. I was keeping my clubface too closed before. As yardage increases, do you gradually change technique, or do you use some variation of this up to X yards and then switch to full swing?
Yes! I would keep it more toe up INSIDE of 30.... Then a little toe down okay starting with wedge distances....especially all shots outside of say 50 yards

60/40 left would be fine.
70/30 left could be fine
Anything more than that can require a few adjustments.
60/40 left would be a good rule of thumb
If you post a chip shot with your next updated I would be glad to take a look!
"Feels very goofy at first, I am very guilty of that. Love this video!
We all are :)
Savage video! Thanks
Thanks, Richie!
Eric the ball appears to be off your right toe is this correct. Gerrie
Hey Gerrie!
I'd start with the ball in the middle of your stance and then you can play around with moving it BACK a touch (to steepen the angle of attack and launch the ball lower) or UP a touch (to shallow the angle of attack and launch the ball higher).
Hope this is helpful!
Is a sand wedge 56゚ loft
Yup
great vid
Thanks, Tom!
I notice when you finish the chip shot your right foot is planted on the ground and your left toe is raised up. Is this the standard move for the legs??
I would say thats fairly normal, yes.
@@CogornoGolf Thank you for your kind reply!
Ball position at address? Foreword, center, or back?
Hey! I would say just back of middle for stock...
Heres more info on that

There is no stock position. It varies based on lie, slope, how much green to work with, and pin location. Every shot around the green is different, so a stock position is limiting overall to versatility.
Great lesson love the beginning we are not Phil Mickelson. Have to remember left and holster
:) Thanks, Brian! Appreciate you being here with us!
you are awesome
Thanks, Preston! Appreciate ya!
17:15 mark, begin video. Here he summarizes all the important key points, thus avoiding too much dialect throughout up this minute mark. Great info though.
Thanks!
You guys forgot to talk about two important things: ball position & left arm bent or straight.
Sorry about that!
Here is more on chipping for ball position. I would say just back of middle for stock shots would be good
Left arm will have some bend

Great video, very helpful. I was keeping my clubface too closed before. As yardage increases, do you gradually change technique, or do you use some variation of this up to X yards and then switch to full swing?
Yes! I would keep it more toe up INSIDE of 30....
Then a little toe down okay starting with wedge distances....especially all shots outside of say 50 yards
Who’s giving the lesson?
Lol! Both of us!!!
so well explained, I like the part about the butt of the club following the belly button. And Eric is very eloquent in explaining the swing in detail
I subscribed
Appreciate the kind words and support!
It's just bugging me a little... is he keeping his shadow on the ball on purpose? Lol!
:)
I guess Roeni explains it well.
This ignores the design of the club ….why not just control the loft with the grip. Keep the club square and then control the club .
Whatever works for you we are happy with!
This would of been better if robert just demonstrated and explained first.
mr british man, he was leaning back... and on left side... pay attention to what you say and what actually is happening.
19 mins long! Could it not be a more succinct this video?
Agreed! Sorry about that...working on making things more concise!
Sorry about the criticism. But overall your videos are excellent. Keep it up!
_"No Hinge & Hold?"_
Ah! You're no fun!
Lol :)
The coach was casting too much shadow over the subject and the ball spoiling the lesson
Thanks for the feedback!
Sorry about shadow
