The best thing you are doing: Giving faces to editors, producers, etc.. people who normally don't receive too much attention, but are the fundamentals in movie making. Good job.
So true. I really loved this episode.
So cool! Well put :)
WHAT!? Indy Mogul is all just casually interviewing an oscar-winning editor and composer!? Killing it!
Been a fan of Indy Mogul since early 2011, very cool that you're able to get people like this
More people should highlight important decisions of editors, producers, directors etc. Really interesting why they did something in a specific way.
Love this! Great to get insight into what goes into editing great scenes like this.
Got to see the movie Bohemian Rhapsody in Dolby Cinema, the seats rumbled with the kick drum in the final Live Aid concert. It was one of the coolest moviegoing experiences. Shout out to whoever programmed that.
Totally remember this scene and couldn’t agree more. Absolutely awesome.
What a legend. Jon is just a hilarious as he is talented. For those who are curious, make sure you check out the podcast.
Have you asked him about the scene where the band first meets their producer? This scene editing was highly criticized after it got the oscar and I would love to know why the editing is so unusual there
Great video! I'll definitely be trying to apply some of these lessons to my own edits. Especially being able to take something I thought was good and possibly rework it so it can be much better.

Wow! That was an incredible example of editing to create emotion. So powerful!
Brilliant video. These are priceless videos with so much useful information.
This guy is a _genius_ as an editor. I was completely blown away by what was done on Usual Suspects, especially when he talks about cutting the trailer together after the studio tried to market hte movie like it was Pulp Fiction. That trailer really captures the movie. His music wasn't half bad either. Going back through film history, Supsects' editing in the finale is a little derivative from JFK - I feel, so it wasn't "new" per se, but it was brilliant. This is one of the few people I can respect as much as Thelma Schoonmaker, not surprised he did Rhapsody or won an Oscar for it, can't believe there are armchair critics trying to debase this guy.
This is so friggin rad and informative.. now I need to go watch the film
one of the best episodes of indy mogul!! 🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾💕💕💕💕
If I may, please get more editors on Indy Mogal. John Ottoman is fantastic and does great work. I’d love to see someone who does a television series. Also learning from some sound editors about what they do would be amazing too. You have incredible access to the best in the business so we’re all (I hate to say it) counting on you out here.
I haven't even watched the movie yet and just seeing this gave me chills
I have yet to see the movie but this compels me to do so. Great job.
There's GOLD in them thar vids!! Seriously, there is some FANTASTIC STUFF in here, thank you so much!
my favorite channel is here 😍, thank you for this!
Few vids i've watched is like Oprah of film-making values for me. youre a ledge mate! from Australia
I want to know how they did the shot through the piano pedals, through the legs, under the bench and up to the guitar solo. And, how they did the one through the bus front window out the back window. Awesome episode!
Probably lots of masking and cuts, ie magic.
This channel is fire lately!
Still haven't seen this movie yet but the editor sounds like a pragmatic person I dig it!
I feel going in to film course when watching this video, thanks for the sharing..
Thanks as always man. You always look like you are having ‘The BEST time’!
Love it. Love loads of film love and some classy editing!!
😀🕺🏻🎥🏖🇦🇺
I'm thankful Hollywood finally decided to make a film about one of the greatest bands that have ever existed, but the editing was less than mediocre. I enjoyed the concerts, but many dialogue scenes had serious problems. It didn't deserve the Oscar for editing, not at all! After they won, a RUclipsr made a video criticizing the editing, and especially one scene which was horribly put together. (When Queen meet the agent/manager)
Very helpful insight. Got to use these tips on my RUclips channel videos. Thanks.
Brilliant episode. Loved it. More please...
I watched some of your videos in the past, now youtube casually recommends a video on your channel and pooow!!! the content has gone through the roof and I am actually watching an oscar winning editor speaking in a little studio with 2 lamps. Unreal! I will probably have to let Peter McKinnon go and subscribe to your channel. (only exchanges are possible)
That was great. I really enjoyed this one. Jon is a legend INDEED!
Nice! Thank you for having such a talent in an interview.
John Ottman is one of the all time greats! His score for Kiss Kiss Bang Bang is superb.
You neglected to mention that he directed Urban Legend: Final Cut. A damn fine slasher.
thank you for inspirational and educational stuff!
Excellent interviewee! Very short interview, you need an episode of an hour and a half at least!
Ennio Morricone was the best film score composer of all time
Is.
Ennio lives.
This was cool...kudos for getting content like this!
Wonderful perspective
Hi. Why not an episode on continuity? Its massively underrated... And I personally some times fail to get around any workflow with them. Also script supervisor. Cheers.
I'm late to the chanel, but this is awesome, thank you!!!
What is your favorite part about being able to talk to people like him and what advice do you have for beginner podcasters?
Wow, this was amazing! John's such a down to earth guy! The REAL DEAL and one of the BEST in the Buz! He deserved an OSCAR for this one! Thank you for sharing on how a Pro does it. I see that not much changes in the BIG BUDGET MOTION PICTURES, is still comes down to the basic needs to build, cut, improvise, and stand your ground on making a story grand.
He's a class act. So many hit films, but still had the time to hang out with us and teach us about what he's learned
Bohemian Rhapsody was a great film, but it also had the biggest editing disaster of the last decade. Remember the scene when Queen meet their label executive? HORRIBLE editing choices there, completely out of pace, unmotivated cuts. I never thought it would have won THAT Oscar...and after it did, even a RUclipsr made a video criticizing the editing and that specific scene. Can't remember which channel posted the video, but I'm sure you can find it.
I hope those microphones on the table mean the podcast will have more consistent sound! :)
Hi, love the show and like to know what kind of mics you are using? I got Audio-technica 2035 for my podcast but they have to be pretty close to the mouth for better sound quality which is not good for video as they block your face.
WOW! This video is very very interesting!
This was awesome
ok where do all these you tubers get their merchandise supply from?
Initially buy personally. Then later get sponsored.
Maybe one day Spielberg will be interviewed by Indy Mogul!
Maybe one day, Ted will be interviewed by Spielberg...
Editing any kind of thing to perfect is toughest job.
Cool interview! Epidemic though :(
Indy open your eyes 😂😂😂
Btw, I signed up for epidemic sound entered your code and got nothing!
Bohemian Rhapsody had some of the worst editing ever. That oscar should've gone to literally any other film, ANY other film that was nominated. One of the biggest mistakes of the 2019 Oscars. Just look at most of the conversation scenes in the movie: all of them are jumpy with unmotivated cutting. And of course, there is the infamous Café scene which is the pinnacle of bad editing.
True that but they had some issues with the director leaving and all
Sonu Sunil
Which is exactly why it shouldn’t have won.
Coooooooooooooooooolllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll
Who made those silver headphones though? They are magnificently yummy
I thinks it's more of a break down of the movie
Gonna be honest there are too many badly edited scenes in Bohemian Rhapsody, that Im very very surprised it got nominated for anything editing related
This is definitely not 2007 level indymogul but its still good filmmaking content.
Wait what? I think this indymogul is way more informative than 2007 one, in professional level
@@Leo_Dewa I agree. 2007 was like how to make the best student film. This new version is actually teaching how to make a living as a filmmaker, sans the hollywood fluff. The how to shoot interviews are incredibly informative.
FOURTH!!
Well... in this other channel it's said exactly the opposite on what Ottman is depicting in this video. According to Thomas Flight, the editing in Bohemian Rhapsody is terrible.
Here is the video analysis on that:
ruclips.net/video/4dn8Fd0TYek/видео.html
Your thumbnail is misleading
I thought it was common knowledge that Bohemian Rhapsody was less than mediocre editing.
...yes, and then there are this pepsi cups which are ruining your immersion.
Unfortunately that movie did not deserve the editing Oscar. It was good but not nearly good enough, to many bad scenes such as the infamous cafe scene that is just a mess. I’m impressed of course with the work but it didn’t deserve the Oscar.
SECOND!
First
I didn’t understand shit
местами смотрится так, будто чувак пытается отмазать херовый монтаж (за которую еще оскара дали), забивая всевозможные медиаканалы, даже в малоивестные ютуб каналы
hahaha this movie has trash editing
Thanks for this! So insightful!
