I get the Morrisons version which is £2.99... the batter is super crisp, and it has 65% cod (13% more than the Iceland). 17 minutes at 180c in the air fryer. It's also fillet, not formed cod, so it's amazingly good value and quality!
I can let you into a little bit of info. Both products are actually made by Youngs as I've seen the outer cartons of the Iceland cod fillets as they've restocked the freezers and on the outer cartons of the Iceland cod fillets it clearly states that the cod fillets are produced by Youngs for Iceland. So, basically they're the same fillet just with a different recipe batter and an own brand box.
@@BaldFoodieGuy2 years late with this comment but only recently started watching and have subscribed to your channel. My wife is allergic to sunflower seeds, proper anaphylactic reaction not just an intolerence. This allergy includes sunflower lecithin. She couldn't eat the Iceland battered fish. The Youngs' batter doesn't contain any lecithins so isn't a problem. Sunflower oil doesn't trigger a reaction however.
Good review Gareth, Thanks, To be honest Ive tried all the makes of fish portions, Youngs , Birdseye , icelands , etc with different batter , beer batter , bread crumbs etc . But you can’t beat the good old fish & chip shop with mushy peas and tartar sauce. Mug of tea , perfect for a Friday night , 👍
It's difficult to get 'proper' battered fish these days in Supermarkets. Even a lot of chicken products are 'formed' meat. Check out the ingredients. So many other things are added. Sometimes just to bulk it out (water for instance). The only place to get a nice battered fish fillet is at the fish shop. More expensive but at least it isn't this re-formed stuff. I do agree about the batter. It makes a lot of difference but I would probably just buy what was value for money. Iceland's for me I think.
You're never going to get chippy style fish from a box. If you want something even remotely comparable you need to be buying fish fillets and then battering them yourself and deep fry it.
Both of those look so much better than the frozen offerings we have here in OK, USA. Hard to get good seafood being in a landlocked state, unless it's catfish. Great review sir, have a blessed day!
im from UK and when i went to america illinois first time my friend let me try some cat fish and i liked it it was nice but very greasy. they let me try fried zucchini and i liked that. and i also got to try biscuit gravy and didnt think much of it. but americans are mad on biscuit gravy i hear lol.
Why use palm oil to make batter? Ive only ever used milk and flour and eggs and maybe a touch of baking powder. But i do prefer to use beef dripping to deep fry the battered fish in.

There is a brilliant Iceland Food Warehouse near to where I live and for a year or so now, I have been choosing Iceland's own brand chicken, fish and burgers over all the other brands. I have absolutely no complaints. Iceland's own branded foods are always cheaper, generally weigh more and, in my opinion, every bit as good as the more expensive equivalent.
That is interesting. I haven't shopped in Iceland and I thought it was nearly impossible in this day and age of rampant inflation to get good quality fish so cheap. Having seen this video and your comments, I am converted and will visit Iceland. I certainly won't pay a greedy owner of a fish and chip shop a tenner for a regular portion of cod. Those guys are laughing at us. It's pure extortion, not to mention approx. 3.50 for a portion of fries. Those guys are killing our institution of a fish and chip shop through outright greed.
Oh this is right up my street Gareth, I love all things fish. Both looked good and it was helpful to get your opinion of best taste and value for money. I've read through the foodies comments and I think I'll give ALDI a visit also. Congrats on 17K, I keep saying it, well earned and well deserved, it's just YOU! Cheers pal.
I've found that the cheaper fillets tend to have a batter that can be a little softer in the middle, what helps is brushing with oil - both sides and turning over twice during air fryer cooking. Air fryers are a godsend, save half the cooking time, easy to clean & for 1 or 2 people a real saving in fuel cost, you'll end up loving yours - Cheers!
Must admit I'm impressed by the air fryer - never tried one. I cook my frozen fish n chips on trays in the oven with a few glugs of olive oil on the chips and a splash on the fish. Not so good for the waistline - but so good for the 'taste-time'.
Evening Gareth another oldie. Enjoyed the Cod off thank you for that.Youngs cod portion looks better than iceland. Bet they are a lot more expensive now! Cheap 2 years ago Thank you again
Thanks Gareth I'm going to buy a stamp with the money I've saved... Congratulation on your utube success, well deserved for brightening up so many peoples lives.
The price difference is quite significant, the Iceland ones work out at £6.00/Kg whereas the Young's are £9.38/Kg. It needs to be remembered when cooking these that each of the fillets are a different weight, Young's are 100g each but the Iceland are 125g each so really need cooking for longer. That would no doubt improve the batter of the Iceland fillets. They are both made from fish "trimmings" so really just fish cakes without the potato! Keep up the good work.
Yes, the keyword to look for is "formed". This means it's not a single fillet, but various bits and pieces. Even the Birds Eye brand is like this. Which is why I prefer to buy proper, raw cod fillets from Aldi or Lidl and pan-fry them. Season one fillet both sides, then dust lightly with flour (no egg) and fry each side in medium hot sunflower oil for 1½ to 2 minutes, depending on thickness. Add a small knob of butter to the oil to help browning.
Liked the look of the Youngs batter a bit more and fish flakes looked a little bit bigger. Think I will pay a few bob more and go for the Youngs thanks pal. All the best on so many views, and best wishes from Manchester. Take care mate.

Sometimes with frozen fish it can taste a bit "tired", shall we say?! I've never needed to disguise the taste of Youngs with mountains of tartar sauce. I wouldn't buy any other frozen fish. Also Young's Battered Alaskan Pollock is very tasty.

That's a great video, and that gives you an idea how we are being exploited by fish and chip shops when they are charging up to a tenner for a reguklar sized cod. Yes maybe you get more actual fish from your local chippie, but you paid roughly 75p for a battered cod fillet plus a few pennies cooking it. I reckon it's time we all boycotted fish and chip shops to force them to bring their prices down. What they are charging is extortion and it has to stop. Thankfully us as consumers can do something about it. Thanks once again for your video.

Great review I didn't realise that they were both formed I thought that the more expensive one would have been a fish fillet interesting. I guess if you want a fillet you either batter you own fillet or go to a fish and chip shop.
Gareth, would love you to do a review on Spice Tailor. Their range is fantastic. All you have to do is add meat and make rice. You should find it in Tesco, Morrisons and sometimes Asda. You wont regret it.

Morrisson's, Lidl, Aldi, Iceland, Youngs in order of quality of fish, taste & VFM. My granddaughter will only eat Lidl's or fresh and battered at home. I'm fairly certain Young's does the packaging for most of them.

I eland haddock fillets are lovely also for the cod I like the luxury range ones I find the youngs ones a lil to greasy another great review pal 👍 😀
Cheers Vortex 👍👍
Nice I like both only buy the Young's when on special offer .did my beef short ribs pressure cook then air fry with bulls eye Smokey chipotle hot BBQ sauce awesome 35 minutes mate
Cheers Muzzer
I love fish, and i favour the youngs fish myself , but as you say there isn't much between them .... both good offerings.
try a comparison of 'Youngs Gastro Fish Fingers against the Tesco 6 Chunky Cod Fillet. Used to get Gastro for a while, but since prefer the Tesco ones.... both big chunky ones....
cheers pal
I buy the youngs fish shop ones, they are really nice, used to buy Iceland but they were getting chewy
I think I'm just used to bird's-eye tried the morrisons and it's much nicer.
Yes I buy youngs from iceland I like there gastro range
Nice with chips and baked beans
Enjoyed watching Gareth
Lovely Kizzy thank you 👌👌
Iceland Ramsdens jumbo cod in batter are spot on ! 👍
Great review I didn't realise that they were both formed I thought that the more expensive one would have been a fish fillet interesting. I guess if you want a fillet you either batter you own fillet or go to a fish and chip shop.
Cheers David
Gareth, would love you to do a review on Spice Tailor. Their range is fantastic. All you have to do is add meat and make rice. You should find it in Tesco, Morrisons and sometimes Asda. You wont regret it.
Cheers, I need to write these down, thank you.
I used to buy Iceland cod in batter or breadcrumbs and it was pretty good. Nice thick flaky pieces of cod.
Cheers Graham 😋
I buy Youngs Chip Shop Extra Large Fish Fillets in Beer Batter. They are £2 from Tesco but that's for two and they are Alaskan pollock.
Cheers
And there is absolutely nothing wrong with pollock. It's greatly underrated. Way cheaper than cod or haddock, but still tasty.
@@SuperLittleTyke Very true, there are too many food snobs about. Youngs do sell the same thing with cod but that is £ 3.25 for two fillets.
If you did a butter comparison would it be a knob off? :-)
😂😂😂
You make me laugh Gareth with "let's getta a bit of better light". Awh Gareth I wish we had Aldi in northern Ireland. I had Iceland cod fillets in beer batter the other day with McCain's french fries and peas, it was yummy. Take care ❤️❤️
Cheers Josie, you too x
what do you mean there's no Aldi in Northern Ireland? are you that far behind the times? no wonder there's so much poverty over there!
@@healthiswealth8153 Not sure what way to take that 🤔. We have lidl's tho. We have no Aldi, Morrisons or Waitrose but not sure it has anything to do with being poor 😊🇬🇧
Morrisson's, Lidl, Aldi, Iceland, Youngs in order of quality of fish, taste & VFM. My granddaughter will only eat Lidl's or fresh and battered at home. I'm fairly certain Young's does the packaging for most of them.
Another good honest review 🤝
Thank you 👌👌
I love fresh fish .... yum
Enjoyed the battered fish video. I do like a steamed haggis, have tried a few brand names and just wondering if you have tried a tester or plan to maybe try one the future.
I've done a haggis video, look in home cooking playlist I think.
Thank you, will look up video.
Im loving every day the subscribers are increasing
Cheers Alison 👍👍
