I refer to Spam as Scam ! Spam was once regarded as a poor mans meat and was dirt cheap (along with corned beef) but over the last few years have shot up in price big time. Bacon Grill for me every time, sliced thinly and grilled/fried till crispy on the outside and on toast with HP Fruity Sauce. It's spot on Gaz.
Ah mate. I bought some Bacon Grill this morning & cooked it in the air fryer. I cooked it like you did, then cut it into thin strips & put them back in for another minute, to get them extra crispy, then sprinkled them on top of an egg salad for lunch. Bloody delicious. Much better than the crispy bacon you can buy from supermarkets & a whole lot cheaper too. Love this channel. 👍
Oh Gareth, brought back happy memories of when I was wee. . . chips, spam, fried egg, and beans. Never had bacon grill before. Keep up your great work pal. All the best to you and yours.
Mate, I hadn't had Spam since the 70's. Saw this and went out and fried some up....bloody lovely :) This is now gonna be a guilty pleasure meal when the wife and kid are out lol.
Can't understand why spam and corned beef are as expensive as they are nowadays, when we were kids we only got a meal with this when the cupboards were bare
I'm 57, and had Bacon Grill when I was a kid. Loved it, still do. Love Spam too but do it with peppers, onions and beans. Chop peppers and onions, stir fry with rapeseed oil, add a good teaspoon of garam masala, throw in cubed spam, stir until there's a bit of colour on the spam, tin of beans, brown sauce, heat through. Yum. Great video.
I remember when Spam and corned beef were cheap, plentiful, lasted forever in the tins, and could be used in a hearty meal without breaking the bank. Spam is way overpriced, and cheap corned beef (if you can actually _find_ it cheap) is mostly fat and falls to pieces when you cut it.
To get them out when they don't want to, I've found that just punching a hole in the bottom of the SPAM can with a strong kitchen knife lets enough air in for it to just slide out on its own
First time I had bacon grill was in the '70s when I was an apprentice at Chepstow. Fell in love with it then and still prefer it over Spam to this day.
This has taken me right back to school days when we had Spam fritters for lunch. I would have to go for the bacon grill as it is much cheaper and you get more for your money. 😁
I bought a tin of this last week it was on offer for a quid. You made my mind up what I was having for my tea tonight. It was lovely with a fried egg and tinned tomatoes. Cheers great video
I've come back from having a few scoops after England game, and I'm now watching your channel for the first time. Gagging for a bit of spam now, nice one mate 😅👍
Thanks Gareth,I always look forward to watching your videos, I don’t always comment on them but always give a thumbs up.I’ve never tried bacon grill but will definitely give it a go. 😊
I’ve never done these tinned meats except corned beef, which is surprising because I survive on processed pig and cow in one form or another. I’m actually going to get on to this.
When I was young I worked in the Coop butchers for a short time and we sold Ulster Fry. It was like compressed ham and they sold it sliced. Then you had to fry it, it tasted great, Gareth, a bit like fried Spam. Videos are great, you do a great job.
Hi Johnel47, I’m 76, and when I was a kid (50’s) my mum used to fry up Ulster Fry , Lorne sausage and egg for our breakfast on a Sunday morning, fond memories of a tasty dish. Was never fond of Spam though, but do enjoy Pek canned meat with chips and beans
My old mum use to cook spam fritters and home made chips for me when I was a young lad in the early '60's. I haven't eaten spam since. I used to enjoy bacon grill when I was a squaddie between 1971 - 1982, but I haven't eaten that since, either. I've just remembered, I used to make a sandwich with Plumrose chopped ham with pork and brown sauce. As an aside, I worked for and with the US Army a couple of times in Berlin and Schleswig. Due to their idiosyncrasies, we used to refer to them as SPAMS, not the usual Yanks. Do you know why British squaddies refer to egg sandwiches as egg "banjo's"? The reason is rather amusing, but requires a demonstration for full effect.
I always have a tin of Spam in the fridge, l love it. However, as the price of it seems to increase each time i buy a tin, i will give the other a try.
When you open the Spam, lift the pull ring to 90°, then force it on forward about another 45°, breaking the seam, before pulling it back. Put your first finger through the ring and brace your thumb on the center of the lid and pull. The lid will open much easier.
Gareth, I can remember when used to get bacon grill in rat packs and you had to open the tin when you had freezing fingers with the tin opener then cook them in your mess tins without welding it to the bottom. Sadly you don't get it in modern 24 hrs ORP but you still get it in the 10 man ration pack. One of my chefs made some amazing chilli battered spam fritters when we're on Exercise on Salisbury Plain many years ago.
back in the early 80s we just pierced the can with our little can openers and boiled it in the mess tin in the water used for our brew. Then opened tin and ate it right from the tin. Loved bacon grill as much as my SLR lol
Another good video :) Thank you! My father did all the cooking, so maybe once per month we would have Spam, or some Luncheon meat. Occasionally diced up, fried with onion and mixed with rice... flashed from a distant memory. I haven’t eaten it since I was a teenager... but can still remember the scent and taste :)
Hello from Michigan!!! I haven't had spam in years it was a favorite of my grandpa and I when I was little guy. This was the go to snack after chopping wood brings back memories thanks for the video going to try the Bacon grill tonight!
Alright fella, When you mentioned being in the forces. it reminded me of when going on exercise we used to take loads of this stuff to bulk up are rations. Trying to cook it in mess tins with heximine blocks. As a bloke of a certain age living on my own who can't even boil water i find your channel very informative . And sometimes the cheaper alternatives taste better .Keep up the good work
I was stuck for breakfast over the summer, so I opened a tin of fishing bait, sliced it and put it on a couple of rolls with fried eggs. I confess that it was pretty good. A great store cupboard standby.
Hi Gareth, the 6 character alphanumeric code (DE 65 EF) in this instance identifies the production facility the product was made in , so these 2 were made in the exact same factory. The code is governed by the FSA in the UK.

I like the Pek Chopped Pork for it's flavour, it is £2 for 300g at asda but goes on offer as £1.50 fairly often and when it does i buy by the case. Saying all that i will be getting afew cans of the bacon grill to try in various ways, mainly thinking of frying and chopping it up to add to stir fried rice. The last time I had Spam would have been about 1979 or 1980. This has me wondering about giving it a go, as I've completely forgot what it tastes like. When doing price comparisons, in cases like this it might be informative to calculate the price per weight of particular ingredient. In this case pork. The smaller fractional weight of pork in the Bacon Grill would partly offset the lower price by total weight. And when doing multi-comparisons, a graph (even hand drawn) is very helpful to see the differences, as opposed to keepin' a bunch o' numbers in yer 'ead, wot. 😉
Another great vid Gareth and I'm defintely going to buy some of the bacon grill next time we do our monthly shop, but you mentioned butter...now eveybody loves butter, but the price of it nowadays is scandalous. Any chance of a butter / marg / spread off?
Back in the day I remember my Dad making Spam fritters in home made batter, lovely. Of course you can now buy them made like that. I usually get chopped pork and ham and shove it under the grill . Will try the bacon grill now though.
Oh dear Gareth. Forget the bread and butter. Spam on a SLT (Spam, lettuce and Tomato), Bacon Grill on a BGLT on a ... well, you get the tribute to the BLT idea. Ditch the air fryer - too much effort for too little reward (a lot of clean-up for a bit of Spam/Bacon Grill). Fry the slices in a hot, dry frying pan, they've got enough fat to carry them for a minute on each side and they'll be crisp on the outside and soft inside, not cremated like in the air fryer. But, talk to people in Hawai'i or Korea they'll tell a different story.
I remember Bacon grill in one of the ration packs when i was in the army back in the 80's, it was one of the things that used to get binned to save weight lol, I wish I kept one or 2 of those folding tin openers as they were dead handy.

Hi there, another great video like always from you. Very interesting to watch. I do enjoy your channel keep up the good work. I don’t like this product but I did enjoy the video

Spot on Spam Gareth! I do love spam, especially chopped and cooked in scrambled eggs. I've never tried the bacon grill so you've encourage me to try it on my next trip to Asda. Shame your channel has resulted in an Air Fryer shortage across the country 😊 By the way, I would love to hear more about your days in the force. Have you covered it on any other of your videos?
Omg as soon as you said you know what goes in ! My thoughts are with what my hubby says about cheaper meat products. Lips and bottom -holes , being polite! that will put you off now ! Great demo as usual 👌
When i was serving in the Royal Marines back in the seventies, after a run ashore we used to break into the galley and make egg banjos , luckily never got caught..
Hi Gareth, try PEK chopped pork it’s far superior to spam and I think it’s a bit cheaper, it’s made in Poland so you know it’s good. Hot or cold it’s delicious. It’s not got much fat in it so is better fried.
Never liked the look of the processed tinned pork products, but I do eat corned beef occasionally, I don't have an air fryer yet but would try it fried in the pan 😃
Got one for you to try. Buy a cheap steak, maybe the Asda just essentials one you've reviewed and marinade it over night in pineapple juice. Then cook as you would normally. Pineapple juice works wonders on tenderising cheaper steaks, blending up a proper entire pineapple works better but pineapple juice is easier. I've tried it and it really did work. Maybe also cook another one as is to compare. Would make a brilliant video.
the key style ring pulls ,put it on your keys ,they can unlock trolleys that require a pound coin and they can come out at any time !, old retail trick
I was in the RGJ back in the 80's and Bacon Grill was the best part of any ORP. But it was best when boiled in a mess tin. And you have to be very wet and very very F**ed to love it. It was a life saver. Love the vids. Keep up the good work mate.👍

Pork is a cut of meat from a domesticated pig in its raw form, while ham is a specific cut of pork from the pig’s hind legs.
Spam at 90% meat is quite impressive. I remember this pink coloured meat being called luncheon meat.
Cheers pal
Omg as soon as you said you know what goes in ! My thoughts are with what my hubby says about cheaper meat products. Lips and bottom -holes , being polite! that will put you off now ! Great demo as usual 👌
Haha yes
When i was serving in the Royal Marines back in the seventies, after a run ashore we used to break into the galley and make egg banjos , luckily never got caught..
Fair play pal respect to you.
Hi Gareth, try PEK chopped pork it’s far superior to spam and I think it’s a bit cheaper, it’s made in Poland so you know it’s good. Hot or cold it’s delicious. It’s not got much fat in it so is better fried.
Yes that one is coming I've got some 😊👍👍
@@BaldFoodieGuy Great stuff I was brought up on it.
Never liked the look of the processed tinned pork products, but I do eat corned beef occasionally, I don't have an air fryer yet but would try it fried in the pan 😃
When I was in the T A we used to strip all the 24hr ration packs put every thing in 1 pan and make a stew everything went in was heaven
Yes an all in, brilliant pal 👌👌
Got one for you to try. Buy a cheap steak, maybe the Asda just essentials one you've reviewed and marinade it over night in pineapple juice. Then cook as you would normally. Pineapple juice works wonders on tenderising cheaper steaks, blending up a proper entire pineapple works better but pineapple juice is easier. I've tried it and it really did work. Maybe also cook another one as is to compare. Would make a brilliant video.
Cheers Matt

Ello mate, enjoying your vids subbed, we have both but prefer the bacon grill 😋 with fried eggs, beans, mushrooms, etc. love a bit of burn on them
Thanks for the sub! all the best pal
I was in the RGJ back in the 80's and Bacon Grill was the best part of any ORP. But it was best when boiled in a mess tin. And you have to be very wet and very very F**ed to love it. It was a life saver. Love the vids. Keep up the good work mate.👍
Cheers brother respect to you.
Is that a bottle of Bluevine on the worktop in the background ready for Christmas 😂👍
☺ love all your work , find it interesting, keep going bald foodie guy 🎄
Cheers Sean
