For a struggling family that is a very viable basis of meal or lunch. For £1 a head you could feed them all. Well done Aldi, in current times families need access to good quality, real food at fair prices.
Yes everybody go to Aldi, because I am still fuming at M & S planning on going Ctedit Card only. Have a piece of that fish I fry it, do sautéed potatoes , and mushy peas with mint sauce on . A perfectly acceptable meal for two.
this reminds me of a nye bevan quote from many years ago " this island is made mainly of coal and surrounded by fish, only an organisational genius could produce a shortage of both coal and fish at the same time ".
Nothing wrong with pollock, we used to catch them off Anglesey breakwater. You will get small grey-ish bits in them, but all edible and tasty. At 58p a real bargain. Thanks Gareth.
Pollack fillets are vertical cuts from the body, starting at the backbone and working down to the belly. Pollock loins are thick fillets cut from larger fish, and chiefly comprise the main section of fillet above the fish's lateral line, which starts behind the head and ends behind the dorsal fin. These you have are not proper fillets , they are offcuts of a fillet mechanically formed to make the product. On the other hand , I still prefer Pollack to Cod. Like tuna or salmon, pollock is a good source of protein and is low in saturated fat. Pollock is also low in calories and a good source of vitamin B12, phosphorus, and selenium. Other nutritional minerals you can find in pollock include calcium, iron, magnesium, potassium, sodium, zinc, and vitamin A. See you on the live show.
@@judyfrosini3431 If you read it correctly , I prefer pollock . I was pointing out that the wording on the label was misinforming. They have put offcuts together to make a it look like a fillet. If they had just put "Battered Pollock" it would have been perfect. They do have all the same nutritional value as salmon and tuna. Absolutely nothing wrong with the product , just how they have labelled it.
I never doubted them for a minute once I saw the packaging. Do you remember those awful smart price fillets, that asda did around the mid 2000s? Ground up fish skins compressed and shaped into a fillet.
That's what the packet says these are: pieces reformed into a fillet shape. And half of it is batter for a similar price to frozen 100% pollack whole fillet. You're paying over £4 per kilo for flour, oil and water, otherwise known as bread.
@@mimikurtz2162 Yes, you are correct. They are reformed pieces of fish but good quality pieces. Your freezer tea today reminded me of the review you did of Aldi Everyday Essentials Battered Fish Fillets. Last Tuesday I was in Aldi and wanted to buy these again. However, the box is no longer blue, it's red! And Aldi have stuck a "I'm new!" sticker on. But inside still the same battered pollock fillets and just as tasty.
I really like Pollock. What I don't like is when some brands say "white fish", without saying what fish it contains. A really nice fish that most people have probably not even heard of is "Hoki". If you ever see Hoki while you're shopping, you should give it a try, mate. It is really nice. It's a white fish with a mild sweet flavour. Similar to a Cod flavour but has a little bit more flavour.

Back in 70's we used to sell Pollock, (aka, coley, saithe and coalfish), as food for. cats. Even back then I liked both it's taste and big flakes, I used to eat it quite often. Some disreputable chippies by smaller skinned fillets of Pollock or whiting and sell it as cod. That's why I never buy skinless fish from a chippie. Another less expensive option is huss, (aka, rock salmon, dogfish, bull huss, rock eel, flake and sweet William), it is a nice firm fish and comes without bones, as it just has a cartilage down it's spine. Some people won't think of eating it due to it being part of the shark family, but believe me when I say it is really tasty. 🦈🦈. As for getting 4 battered Pollock fillets @ .58p per fillet? It looks good, it's a very good price, it tastes good and it's a healthy food to eat. This could be the buy of the year. 👍👌👌👍.
@@ElliHarper They certainly are Leslie, although with a difference here and there. In the same way as Cod and Haddock are related, as both fish come from the same Cod family genus. Pollock is also related to both Cod and Haddock. Because of the Cod famili genus. Just as other fish types are related, but come under different names, like Herring, Sardines, Anchovies, Sprats and Pilchards. So I guess the real answer is, yes they are the same, but different. In my far back years my family were nearly all fishmongers, or were until fish prices and catch size put an end to them all. Back then we used to mark them up as "Coley" or "Pollock" as people didn't mind eating Pollock, but Coley was purely for pets. Confusing I know, but as I knew what was what, I could eat either.
@@ElliHarper Same genus, different enough to not taste the same and have different texture though. Also, the cheaper Alaskan Pollack used in virtually all of these processed fish dishes are more closely related to Cod than pollock and inferior to the North Atlantic Pollack we are more familiar with. North Atlantic Pollack is not a major target species here, but should be as it is plentiful and excellent (better than Cod I'd say) For interest, Alaskan Pollack is virtually species identical to what we call "Whiting" in the UK, which routinely finds it's way into pet food and fertiliser.

I also feel less guilty when I have five fish fingers in one sandwich when it only costs 40p.
All the best, m8!
Cheers
Nice one, thanks for the review. Some of Aldi and Lidl's food is really nice and good value xx
cheers Gerry, all the best pa. Thank you.

They certainly are Leslie, although with a difference here and there.
North Atlantic Pollack is not a major target species here, but should be as it is plentiful and excellent (better than Cod I'd say)
For interest, Alaskan Pollack is virtually species identical to what we call "Whiting" in the UK, which routinely finds it's way into pet food and fertiliser.
