Hey Gareth, these are really great videos for normal people on normal budgets mate. Thanks so much for what you do. Great stuff keep it up bro. You are a proper role model mate. Your family should be well proud of you. Cheers. Andy
Fish fingers taste better than caviar anyway. I tried it once when it was on special offer. It tasted a bit like slightly salty water with a slight tang of seaweed. The texture wasn't great either. Jellied eels are a bit similar but with a stronger taste of salt & an even worse texture. Not worth bothering with. They may have been good nutrionally mind you but then so is tinned or smoked mackeral & that is not half so expensive. Could you do a comparison of tinned mackeral in tomato sauce? Personally I think the Morrisons one tastes better than the John West. I have it with salad & a bit of salad cream, which makes a quick & tasty lunch.
If you want omega 3 eat mackerel, not white fish which has a fraction of long chain fatty acids as oily fish, but they put lies on the box so you purchase. The colour of the fish finger is from an added dye food colourant and adds no flavour. Love a fish finger butty with loads of butter and ketchup. Great vids for folk that aren't on a politician's money !
As a born and bred 'Cornishman' growing up on a farm ON the coast in Cornwall (UK) fishing brought in Mackerel, Herring, Bass (Sea) et et 👍When I stayed at my Aunt's in Newquay Cornwall (UK) I would go down to the harbour and fetch back Mackerel freshly caught for a few bob.. 👀You're so right re the claims of these factory processed food suppliers.. Often the actual fish in some can be a blended mix of ?! 👍Oh and my mon used to make the most delicious pilchard fish cakes EVER! We make them even today to the same recipe et with a salad AWESOME! 😀Our friends swear by (and after eating some of them -we can totally agree!👍) Young's 'Gastro - Tempura battered - COD fish fingers.' They do Haddock which are cheaper but the COD is definitely AWESOME.. with a butty and NO you don't need SAUCE!! 👍
Hi BFG: I really enjoy your comparisons videos. I think they are very useful for people on a low budget (like me) and let the public know how to choose best quality products according to what they have to pay. Keep it up!!!
You are by far the best food reviewer that I have ever seen, and pig that I am I've watched hundreds.I was sat watching your sausage review with my boys ( four French bulldogs) and we were concentrating on your face whilst you ate lol.Needless to say your recommended sausages are in my shopping cart.God Bless you for making these videos you are an absolute pleasure to watch love and best wishes from my boys and I.
If you are doing big brand / own brand comparisons, particularly of fish or meat products, please give us a quick shot of the complete packages from all sides. At 7:15 (Asda) and 8:20 (Morrison’s) there were little ovals saying GB GG270. This tells us they both came out of the same factory, but we never saw those codes for Aldi or Birds Eye.
Youngs Seafoods in Grimsby make fish fingers for Aldi, Tesco, Morrisons and M&S so you know these are going to be decent quality. Manufacturer code GG268.
Thanks for these videos. Useful comparisons, and you helpfully show the ingredients. This saves me from having to get the specs out to read them in the shop. I didn't finish watching this one, because after 8 minutes, you had shown that all of them contain potato starch, which I can't eat. So thank you for eliminating all these fish fingers from my menu!
So difficult to compare when the weights are different. I decided to work out the price per 100grams and it comes out as follows:- Aldi 31p; Morrisons 58p; Asda 73p & Birds Eye 89p. Wish Aldi was a 10 pack then you would get a better comparison of fish texture and taste i.e. more fish in each finger.
This is what many fish processing companies DON'T want the consumers to know. 👀As a Cornishman growing up on a farm in Cornwall (UK) ON the COAST, we regularly caught Mackerel, Herring, Sea Bass, et et 👀My mom regularly made Pilchard fish CAKES.. (cheap and filling) which were the best EVER and we still, to the same recipe make them today.. with a salad.. summer AWESOME! 👍 Fish fingers sell because kids are hooked on them IF the parents let them.. home made fish cakes can be fun with kids to make FRESH and soooo much cheaper!
Loved the way you said, "If you're absolutely loaded go for the dearer brands" If I was 'absolutely loaded' I wouldn't eat fish fingers at all, I'd eat fresh wild caught Scottish Salmon. Love the programs, keep them coming.
Fish fingers were manufactured for kids since once upon a time were scared to eat fish because of the bones and also the size of the fish fingers were designed for "child size potions.

I tried the Birds Eye Alaskan Pollock fish fingers when Tesco had them on a Club Card price of £1 for 10 (well worth a gamble at that price) and loved them. I'll have to give the Aldi ones a go.
Hi Gareth....i been away so got loads to catch up on lol....loved this review....as a kid fish fingers, chips and beans was my fave dinner...we'd normally have it on a Saturday evening....sometimes with mash potato instead of chips...Mum always used to make her own chips too...deep fried in lard....can't beat home made chips...i do my own too but in oil!! I managed to scan the barcodes on the Morrison’s and Bird’s Eye packets, and both scored 84 out of 100 (excellent) on the Yuka Food and Cosmetic Scanner (the App with the carrot 🥕 on). Unfortunately I couldn’t see the barcodes on the other packets. Thought you might be interested to know about the App. My friend told me about it a couple of days ago. 🤗
Hi Gaz. Great video yet again. Nothing wrong with Pollock or Pollack depending on which end of the country you live - both spellings are correct though. I much prefer its flavour and texture to that of Cod or Haddock any day. We have only been pushed towards Cod and Haddock because it is what we have come to expect from the chippy who rarely stock Pollock. One of my favourite snacks at any time of the day from breakfast through to supper is 3 fish fingers in a lightly toasted and buttered nice soft bread roll (I usually get the pre sliced ones by Warburtons) with a splash of tomato ketchup on one side and a good dollop of tartare sauce in the other.

Love watching these videos they are so relaxing Not sure if you have done any hotdogs comparison videos yet I only thought about them as Alexa was playing The King of Rock ’n’ Roll Song by Prefab Sprout While I was making some oveltine Hot chocolate in the kitchen lol 😂😂
I done a wee bit of this challenge, i bought aldi fish fingers & birds eye, both cod, identical ingredients but i found the birds eye were more tastier !!! Which considering the ingredients were the same , i found to be a bit odd !! Unless some manufacturers hide certain things.
Just catching up on your videos. We like the Aldi ones because we do fish finger burgers. Add some tartar sauce. Plenty of fish fish fingers in each burger! Lovely
Iv always bought Birdsrye haddock fish fingers but for a while iv noticed the fish doesnt look nice & there's very little fish.. so I recently tryed morrisons own & the fish was so much better.. I won't pay birdseye prices again x
How's it going mate? Love the channel. Unfortunately a lot of what you review requires the oven on fairly high for 30 mins or so. This used to make me feel guilty, using loads of power for a snack just for me, then I discovered air frying. Bought a 2.5litre Salter from Lidl, £30 I think. Bloody marvellous, I can cook loads more lovely junk much cheaper, less smells and less mess. I reckon you need one .
really enjoy your videos mate, and Im a poncy southerner! Love your accent as well, having just had a few days up near Durham. Anyway enough of the waffle, you cant beat a fish finger sandwich with ketchup - how common lol
The fishing area codes FAO is optional under European labelling as the fish finger has batter and bread crumb so is not not classed as a single raw item where the code is mandatory.
I bought Morrisons cheapo fish fingers in the past and due to a mistake printed on the receipt, I knew which company made them for Morrisons stores. The receipt said: "Young's Fish Fingers."
Omg Birds Eye Cod in Butter! The sauce if I could bag that just gorgeous. Only nitpick is the mess trying to make that as a meal. Trying to open one without burning fingers off with scissors. Not a good look really but tasty when make effort
Got to bare in mind I once many years ago worked at a frozen fish packing company. We would do a run for say Morrisons and then later in the day stop, change the labelling over to Asda and continue. That was frozen fillets mind but there is no reason to not assume given the percentages it might well be true of the fingers too. I have never rated Birds Eye in any of their food but Morrison's and Asda have always been decent. I prefer haddock but there is nothing wrong with pollock mind.
Hiya Gareth! There’s nothing like a fish finger and on a sandwich. I bought some chunky cod fish fingers from Tesco from the fresh fridges section. Get 6 for £2.50. Yes it’s expensive but boy were they good with some home fries and baked beans. Definitely quality chunky cod fish fingers. Gonna get some more if I can. Never tried haddock fish fingers before. Intrigued to try some. Can recommend jumbo birds chunky fish fingers which come in either batter or breadcrumbs. Enjoy 😋😋😋
Family is gonna be eating fish fingers for a wee bit. Great comparative review. We need these kinds of instant help guides. And you're gonna have to get the good wife to blind you to what you are eating so that this is a rigorously controlled taste test 🧐🤣
I shallow fry the Aldi cod fishfingers, theres 10 in a box for £1.69, they go down a treat in my house, I try and avoid the Alaska Pollock because of mercury concentration around Alaska.
Have you tried Aldi Salmon en croute with leeks etc, we love it but would like your comments. They also do one with Cheese and Dill, haven't tried that one yet. PS: Just love your tasting programs.
You can also get a bag of 28 Breaded Fish Fingers from Iceland Gareth... They are only £2.00 per bag... And they have a Fish content of 59% Alaska Pollock... Also you can get Young's Fish Fingers, they do a box of 10 for £1.00... So they're all pretty much the same taste... It's all down to affordability really... Kids won't care one way or the other... As long as they've got them with Chips and Tomato Ketchup all over them... 👍 Cheers Gareth. 🍺
I reckon that they are all made in the same factory, just to each supermarkets specific specifications. Seems a tad coincidental that they all contain "64%" fish content don't you think? Perhaps, Birds Eye have their own factory seeing that they seem to have the most prestigous brand. Great review though, keep on posting. 👍
My wife used to get a big bag of fish fingers from Iceland, but we thought Bird's Eye tasted better. I'm off to Waitrose today and I'll post, on here, what I think about them.

I've been waiting for this x thanks 🌸 have a lovely weekend 💕. I do love haddock. Fish 🐠 finger sandwich 🥪
Thank you
I like your videos what did you do at the Barrow ship yards ?
pipefitter cheers
Eggs is eggs and fish fingers are fish fingers !!.... Great test Gareth keep it up .... Really made up the foodie following is growing pal !!!
Thank you 😋👌👌
Hi 👋 do you favour Aldi products more? Because of cost? Pollock is a cheaper fish than haddock.
Love watching these videos they are so relaxing Not sure if you have done any hotdogs comparison videos yet I only thought about them as Alexa was playing The King of Rock ’n’ Roll
Song by Prefab Sprout
While I was making some oveltine Hot chocolate in the kitchen lol 😂😂
Thank you
Oh I do like fish fingers, especially on sliced bread with a little bit of butter!!!!! Great video!!!
Thank you 😋👌👌
I done a wee bit of this challenge, i bought aldi fish fingers & birds eye, both cod, identical ingredients but i found the birds eye were more tastier !!! Which considering the ingredients were the same , i found to be a bit odd !! Unless some manufacturers hide certain things.
Nice work!
Just found your channel. Brilliant. Looking forward to watching your other videos. Thanks
Thank you Sylvia, your welcome 👌👌
Grear vid! At 18.56 do I hear a cat squirm...? Thought it was my cat...lol!
thanks
I reckon that you're doing a bl**dy good job Gareth - I'm watching & enjoying your reviews AND we can't even get these brands down here in NZ !!
Thank you kindly. All the best in New Zealand 👌👌
Just catching up on your videos. We like the Aldi ones because we do fish finger burgers. Add some tartar sauce. Plenty of fish fish fingers in each burger! Lovely
cheers Peter
How did I miss this one? I love fish fingers.
Came across your channel by accident but I have now subscribed. Like your reviews
Cheers Paula 👍👍 welcome to the channel and enjoy the videos, all the best, Gareth 👌👌
Scales - fish - ho, ho, ho - you're hilarious Gareth!!!!!!!!! 🤣🤣🤣
I like fishfingers that have batter on rather than breadcrumbs. Will you be tasting those?
Weight them per gram & price per fish finger per gram so divid by per box, so taste per piece!
Birdseye haddock all the way for me
Are you still on line all videos are 9 mth ago , that I see.
Just joined your videos.
🤔
L ....Scotland
yes all on RUclips
Hi ya just come across your videos great to see a normal bloke reviewing cheaper range foods and giving a honest review 👍👍👍
Welcome aboard! thanks, Gareth
Tar tar sauce, ketch up dips makes them a lot better! Brown if you fancy a kick
Great Gareth, could you do one on scampi please?the Countess
I've done one already 👌
Iv always bought Birdsrye haddock fish fingers but for a while iv noticed the fish doesnt look nice & there's very little fish.. so I recently tryed morrisons own & the fish was so much better.. I won't pay birdseye prices again x
I’ve bought a few things where you have to scan a code for cooking directions!! Unbelievable 🤦♂️
I've got an air fryer now, I did an Unboxing. Check that video out, they are amazing

really enjoy your videos mate, and Im a poncy southerner! Love your accent as well, having just had a few days up near Durham. Anyway enough of the waffle, you cant beat a fish finger sandwich with ketchup - how common lol
Cheers Robin. I love a fish finger sandwich 😋😋
Good video yet again gaz they all look good I love fish fingers but as the frozen fish varieties I'm alot more for the youngs fish selection
Cheers Neil, I appreciate your comments thank you, all the best mate
The fishing area codes FAO is optional under European labelling as the fish finger has batter and bread crumb so is not not classed as a single raw item where the code is mandatory.

New subscriber here. loving your channel Gareth, so refreshing to get honest reviews, Cheers H
Cheers Harry, welcome to the channel and enjoy the videos, all the best, Gareth 👍👍
I bought Morrisons cheapo fish fingers in the past and due to a mistake printed on the receipt, I knew which company made them for Morrisons stores. The receipt said: "Young's Fish Fingers."
we had fish in sauce, there was no fish in the boil in the bag, just sauce.
Omg Birds Eye Cod in Butter! The sauce if I could bag that just gorgeous. Only nitpick is the mess trying to make that as a meal. Trying to open one without burning fingers off with scissors. Not a good look really but tasty when make effort
I know stopped buying them years ago fedup with trying to find the fish sauce was tasty though
Cheers Paul 👍👍
My son worked for a ready meal production company and they did the same thing with their ready meals, same meal, different packaging.
Enjoy 😋😋😋
Cheers Sara, hope your well, all the best, Gareth 👍👍
Family is gonna be eating fish fingers for a wee bit. Great comparative review. We need these kinds of instant help guides. And you're gonna have to get the good wife to blind you to what you are eating so that this is a rigorously controlled taste test 🧐🤣
Cheers, yes they won't last long lol
Just love the way you say Aldi and Asda, in a scouse accent .Great vlog mate
Thanks 👍
I shallow fry the Aldi cod fishfingers, theres 10 in a box for £1.69, they go down a treat in my house, I try and avoid the Alaska Pollock because of mercury concentration around Alaska.
Could you please consider doing a video on tartare sauces? Just remembered to ask, the fish video being kind of atmospheric.
Cheers, good shout 😋👍
Have you tried Aldi Salmon en croute with leeks etc, we love it but would like your comments. They also do one with Cheese and Dill, haven't tried that one yet.
PS: Just love your tasting programs.
I've not tried them sorry
Findus used to be the ones but not seen them in years
Can't beat a decent fish finger butty on milk loaf, with tomato sauce.
Gotta do a full box though.
They are nice in fairness. :)
Yes I agree Rick, slapped sauce over them all the same 😂😋😋
I reckon that they are all made in the same factory, just to each supermarkets specific specifications.
I'm off to Waitrose today and I'll post, on here, what I think about them.
oh waitrose are good, posh shop that.
