Let's hear it for pollock! I love eating cod and haddock, but there is absolutely nothing wrong with pollock, and by eating it we are conserving cod and haddock fish stocks. When you cut both burgers in half and pointed the camera, I straightaway thought the Aldi one looked fuller and whiter than the Youngs. As for the batter, I wouldn't pay an extra 76 pence just to get a slightly tastier batter.
It's possibly because youngs battered fish products can be quite greasy. When you cook the normal battered fish the amount of oil that comes off them is quite something. But they do taste really good.
Even if they were the same price, I'd still go for the Aldi product every time since their lovely white fish appears to be better quality than the much greyer appearance of the Young's product. I did notice that the Young's burger mentioned mustard as being one of the ingredients, presumably in the batter which you preferred. It may therefore be worth trying a small amount of mustard mayo with the Aldi burger to see if this does the trick.
Hi Gareth, I love your reviews of ordinary food products that we can all buy from our local supermarkets. But unfortunately if you are going to weigh a package with two or more products in it, it is pointless to only way one item from each box unless you are sure that each of the products in their own box is of the same weight. Otherwise you may have a larger and smaller product in each of their own boxes, so you could have weighed the other two fish and found the opposite outcome. The boxes gave you the total full weight of the contents of the uncooked fish, although it was a bit cheeky and misguiding of Young's to use wasteful larger packaging. If I can make a suggestion, maybe you could in future do a gentle shake of boxes to see how full they are and not made up of fresh air. However I will certainly as always, look forward to your next review with thanks.
Only been watching your channel a little while now love the honest reviews always full of information proper food for the masses you have a great energy only one thing today is you nearly dropped a pollock lol all the best mate
Gareth, I always buy the Aldi ones beside the Tempura they do southern and a buttermilk one. I like the buttermilk ones you should try them next they are really good in bun with tartar sauce and a bit of lettuce 😋
Thanks for your down to earth reviews, I would go for the Aldi if it just a matter of a difference in the batter. A lot of food reviews on youtube are complete pollocks, but yours are totally genuine, thanks.
The Aldi one looks much tastier! The coating looks lighter and the fish looks much better. That's before you tasted them! I'll bet the Aldi one is a more healthy option 🙂😉🙂 I know which one my wife would prefer! 🤔

Gareth, I'm surprised you did not cook them in the Ninja. I've got a couple of packets of these fish burgers from Aldi the other day, the tempura batter ones and the southern fried coating ones. I'll try them with burger buns. I usually use vinegar and salt to season the fish fillets. I'm not a tartare sauce person. LOL.
Today it was the Aldi's tempura battered fish burger for lunch, also put in a brioche bun with lettuce and mayo. And today I added Tesco oven French fries and a portion of Florida salad from Morrisons. All very delicious .
Both looked good but I think I would go for the Aldi one looking at the white fish. The other fish looked a little bit wet, undercooked and grey to me but obviously down to taste.
Iv tried the aldi fish burgers but much prefer to use fish finger in a bun.You can get in aldi 10 cod fish finger for £1.49,so five fish fingers cost the same as one fish burger but you getting cod and not a cheaper white fish alternative, plus easier and quicker to cook because of the frozen mass of the burger.
Hiya mate.. :) Firstly, I love your videos.... a truly wonderful perspective on food comparisons, no bullshit, just honest opinions.... well done and keep it up. On this one (I know you are being honest, and it's about the value/taste over everything else, and not an analysis)... the significant difference in salt content makes this an unfair fight. Maybe I'm missing the point, and perhaps I just like the underdog.... but you seem not to season your food pre-comparison. This time, they did it for you.. Just my thoughts ;)
I like these style of reviews you give an honest opinion in regards to taste and price, also your honesty about having a few beers and feeling rough the morning after 😅
I buy the buttermilk version of these from Aldi, they're delicious. However the Lidl sea salt & black pepper basa fillets are more flavoursome than the Aldi version, also so much better than the branded ones 👍🏴
Hi Gareth. They both look good to me. Whether served with chips and mushy peas or as a fish butty I'd be happy. Nice portion size and batter consistency. The Young's did brown a bit better, but Aldi as usual gets the value vote. Great review today Gareth. Cheers 👍🤤😀🇦🇺
It would be either for me Gareth although I would probably opt for the cheaper one and get more of them simply for the fish content. I think the fish in the ALDI one looked better than the Princes one. I really like the Princes Fish Steaks, they are in parsley or butter sauce and come in a box of four, I can easily eat all four steaks with mashed potatoes and marrowfat peas. Soon be 21K foodie subscribers! I believe the fish in the Young's has been against a bone, and that's why it's that colour. If anyone knows different... The Young's are also available from Sainsbury's (I know you said you don't have one, Gaz) and Tesco for £2.00 and £1.75 Clubcard price; so potentially only 13p more per burger. I used to get some nice fish burgers from Farm Foods, don't know if they still do them. I can highly recommend the Young's Gastro Lemon and Herb tempura basa fillets. Iceland and Aldi do their own, too. Young's have the edge, but Aldi's are not far behind. I'm guessing you couldn't hear me shouting frustratedly at my screen "WEIGH THE OTHER ONE!!" ⚖ 🐟 😂
I have now tried the southern fried fish burger and I do _not_ recommend it. The southern fried coating is too overpowering and you can't taste the fish. Eventually I peeled off the coating and just ate the fish.
@@BaldFoodieGuy I don't think you did. You reviewed the tempura battered burger, but I spotted the southern fried version on the same shelf in Aldi. There is also a buttermilk version, which I haven't tried. The tempura one is very good, though.

It's got to be Aldi. I'm off tomorrow to get some of that fish. Not a fan of the thick batter, I reckon it tastes bitter. Bit 'o bitter batter, haha
Haha enjoy
I enjoy your banter thank you how long did you do in the engineers I did 23 years
cheers, well you certainly did your time, fair play to you. 7 years service.
@@BaldFoodieGuy nice one mate
Hello bud just had steak and kidney pie from Asda 2.00 pound lovely ex royal engineer diver take care buddy
Evening from me n tracy watching your channel now 👋👋👋👋👋👐
Hi both 😋👍👍
@@BaldFoodieGuy loving reply made our day honestly from us both happy evening 👋👋👋 happy
I get the beer batter cod fillets from aldi and my partner loves em. I'm going to try the aldi burgers x
Cheers Hazel.
in Farmfoods they do a twin pack of Youngs Beer Battered fish they used to be £1 but I think they are now £1.25 They are gorgeous! Its the batter! :-)
good to know
@@BaldFoodieGuy I often get them great with a 22p can of Aldi mushy peas and some chips, I am not a fan of oven chips so I either cut some maris pipers up or if I am feeling lazy just use Aldi frozen chips in the old deep fat fryer couple of rounds of bread and butter salt vinegar and ketchup and its a tea fit for a king for about £1.50 ! :-)
Cheers 😋😋👍
Hi there another fantastic really like always just to say I’m not a big fan of frozen fish never seem to taste the same but Another fantastic video
Cheers
Cheers, yes I weighed them both. Do you mean the one in the box lol
@@BaldFoodieGuy yes, to check you had 227g of each make.
it wasn't wild when it was caught ,it was furious but honestly Pollock is bloody awful , it's gotta be cod or haddock
these are lovely
I have now tried the southern fried fish burger and I do _not_ recommend it. The southern fried coating is too overpowering and you can't taste the fish. Eventually I peeled off the coating and just ate the fish.
OK mate I'm not sure if I have had it pal. Cheers.
@@BaldFoodieGuy I don't think you did. You reviewed the tempura battered burger, but I spotted the southern fried version on the same shelf in Aldi. There is also a buttermilk version, which I haven't tried. The tempura one is very good, though.
The Aldi fish burgers are banging iv been buying them for a long time, taste better than a fillet of fish from Mcds I do mine with tartar sauce cheese slice and its absolutely bang on best fish burgers in my view
Cheers Wayne, yes it was tasty.
Hi Gareth I’ve just recently subscribed to your channel after finding you here on youtube, 👍😊 I must admit I’m finding it really interesting & informative and you make it fun too!…I didn’t know Aldi did these fish burgers, i have only had the young’s one’s, but will definitely give them a try 👌😊
Thank you, glad you like the videos and welcome to the channel. All the best, Gareth 😋😋👍
Thanks big man for another fantastic review I'm away to get some fish lol. Keep them coming 💪
Any time!
Oi oi G, looking dapper in your shirt!
Cheers, yes bit rough from last night lol
Try the lightly dusted haddock very nice 😋😋
Thanks
The buttermilk ones are better from Aldi Gareth, thanks for reviewing them & glad you liked them. Keep the brilliant content coming.
Thanks for the tip!
Pollock is a bottom feeding fish that they use to make imitation crab-meat.
I think the crack about the 118 went over their heads m8 lol I'm on the banter bus though....118-118... I got your number, I got your number lol
Haha yes cracking mate eh 🤣🤣👍
Hmm not had a fishy burger , Heinz ketchup ready and waiting when needed.
Thought you were going for COD and dont think i have tasted Pollack and must have run out of Buns.
*Sings*- I'm too sexy for my shirt 🙂
haha on the dancefloor
I've bought the Aldi ones many times and enjoy them.
Cheers Paul.
They would be nice with some mushy peas and home made chips yum
Oh yes 😋😋👍
