- We back! This time we've got a revenge duel against Panik. Mediocre episode - a few minor tweaks really could've boosted this one.
But yeah another two parter this is both episode 14 The Light at the End of the Tunnel and episode 15 Winning Through Intimidation
Lets dive in.
Puns are necessary in this episode. The viewers some LIght humor in such a Dark duel.

Joey dueling Panik would have been cool, and made more sense for building the overarching story between them. But then you'd have to figure out a way for Joey to survive attempted murder by flame-thrower.
Also, Yami Yugi DOES attack in the duel when he declares an attack on the Reaper of the Cards and drops Panik's life points by a tremendous amount.
Ill say Joey survives because 1) Mai survives 2) Joey survives a direct attack from Ra

I 100% agree that Joey doing this win in order to give Mei the chips would have cemented a friendship for this and Mei gaining a lot of respect and maybe fondness for him

The image of PaniK raising Mai's arm up was burned into my brain as a child and I knew this guy was an Avengers level threat, that was until Yugi picked him apart.

Now i could be wrong, but i always assume MIND crush was some sort of mental assault, see when kaiba got mind crush he had a moment of self reflection, dropped out of the tournament weavile won before duelist kingdom, then told mokuba he was going to find himself
Plus that kaiba ghost was essentially the dark side yami banished
When yugi is talking Violence he's talking about physical violence, like the dudes at school who beat him up until joey&Tristan stepped in

You can watch the UFC those guys get beat up, but they coming out alive. Yami’s victims - not so much

I like to think that Panik turned off the flamethrowers because of how all the Duelist Kingdom ruling shenanigans interact with the game mechanics.
I could absolutely see a version of this duel where the flamethrowers illuminate the darkness and reveal the monsters inside. Hence why he turned off the fire before he played his darkness cards and only reigniting them when he believed the only solution was murder.

Why would anyone assume Yami Bakura would return? He went to the GY and was attacked by the Reaper. Everyone would assume he was gone for good.
His return was a massive surprise.
I feel like Yugi and friends didnt entirely know what was going on - they didnt even get a chance hardly to start to piece it together. I think Id be questioning the evilness return
Joey vs Panik would have been interesting, indeed. And he did have the cards to deal with it without BS. Shield and sword would lower the castle of dark illusions defense so any monster could destroy it. Red eyes with dragon claws was strong enough to beat it or simply good old time wizard.
So this is actually not even the first “Eliminator” they encountered - in the Japanese the “Kaiba’s evil side” was also just an Eliminator that was really good at impersonating and making himself look like others. But the English dub did that really stupid thing with him instead.
Also there is an implication that Panik is cheating in the game most likely because the “darkness” is probably not supposed to make it that Yugi cannot see what’s happening. Which qualifies Panik for a Punishment Game of a Mind Crush. (Note you can only suffer a Punishment Game by either cheating or loosing in a Shadow Game and generally Yami Yugi only makes people suffer a punishment game if they cheat.)

in the manga they played on tables which still had holograms. im assuming anime changed that cus real size monsters would look coolers to kids. but that means panik couldnt choke yami across the table with a wire. so they changed the wire to flamethrowers
I know this duel does not follow the rules at all but I love this duel a lot. As a kid afread of the dark this helped a lot.

Ok so, for anyone wondering, the reason Panik's monsters have such weird stats is because in the manga there was no field power bonus, his monsters just had really high attack and defense.
The anime overcomplicated things with the 30% buff in the darkness, so in order for Panik's monster to have somewhat similar stats to their manga counterparts, they reduced them to those weird values so they would be close enough when the bonus was applied.
Why not follow the manga, you may ask? My best guess is that they wanted to keep some semblance of consistency with the Duelist Kingdoms rules as in the manga, Kazuki Takahashi would just drop previously established rules altogether for seemingly no reasons. Examples of this are:
>Monster alignments. Dropped after the Pegasus VHS duel.
>Type affinities. Dropped after the Mai duel.
>Taking burn damage when your monsters are destroyed by an effect. Dropped after the Weevil duel.
>Monsters with a field power bonus gaining immunity from spells. Dropped after the Weevil duel as well.
>And yes, field power bonuses as a whole. Dropped after the Rex duel.
I actually was wondering. I deleted it as a Nikpik but on the shot whenever Panik was breaking down the monsters on his side of the field I circled it and said these are the ugliest numbers I’ve ever seen

This duel is another insane one when comparing the manga and anime since in the manga, Yugi bets his life once again and Panik is ljke "oh really" and attached a metal noose around Yugi's neck to make sure that he keeps his word, and that if he does end up losing he's gonna close the noose up, suffocating him to death. That image alone in your head is pretty frighting

This is also the last time Yugi uses a Penalty Game (Mind Crush) on someone iirc. In the manga it's also dark af since he traps PK (Panik) in an illusion of walking up the gallows and getting hanged, it's brutal.

Mai's biggest weakness is her insecurity. She's a good duelist, but between trying to psyche Joey out, crumbling before Panik, and using Rex to beat Joey, she's never at her best.
We see her at her best when she finally duels Yami.
I say her biggest weakness is the plot.
I feel like pointing out panic is employeed by maximumillion. So technically Yugi cost him his job here.

@@alexisdipoalo9443 I think he was killed here - he doesn't appear after the battle, either killed or banished. Its pretty vague. Theres no time for an explanation. All the minutes that could've been dedicated to an explanation were given to Mai's sideline commentary

This episode(s) picks up the word Bully early on and it Never Ever stops saying that word. It's a drinking game, take a shot any time someone says Bully. There's no variety, it inspired me as a writer when I was a kid because I realized excessive repetition without earning it is just sloppy.
The difference between what Panik did and what Mako did is that Mako didn't have a monster with 2501 DEF after the field power bonus.

Due note on the ENGLISH dub Panic's Duel DISC warning doesn't show up EVER in the English dub that warning only shows up in the Japanese dub when he tries to use Reaper of the cards to destroy a face down MAGIC card when Yami played a TRAP card face down instead.

Panic made her bet all 8 of her chips when she only needed 2 to make it the finals
I think Mai willingly bet the chips. When the gang arrived she didn’t say “hey he forced me to over bet my chips”
@@NitPik-p3r Why was she bet 8 of her chips? As she only needs 2 to get to the finals. Panic kidnapped her. And was hired to eliminate her then he tried to kill yugi when he lost. It seems much more likely that he forced her to.
Mai is insecure, that's why she uses her perfume trick. She's a good duelist, but without friends, she feels empty.
As a result, she overcompensates buy betting everything her OPPONENT has. That way, she can not only win, but completely obliterate. For Mai, winning isn't enough (she needs friends).
That's why, after this duel, she proceeds to win at most 12 more star chips, totaling at most 20, which she then uses to help Yugi enter the finals.
14:09 In all fairness to the ending part there, Mai does switch up her deck for her duel against Yugi in the finals.

@@NitPik-p3r Also, I believe that she gives up on using her aroma strategy after this, because there is the one duel she does with Tea before we see the Kaiba VS Pegasus match which I’m convinced only exists to show that Mia has fully discarded the cheap aroma tricks she was using.
@@KingBioSparkVII think she stopped after her Joey duel. Right before she hired Rex we saw the tail end of her duel with some rando. She didnt appear to be doing her trick. But I could be wrong
@@NitPik-p3r I still think the Mia VS Tea duel is more of a concrete showcase that Mia is done with using tricks. I’m like 90% sure that’s the only reason this duel exists outside of giving Tea some duel time.
Fun fact: Tea wins every duel she has, and there’s only like two that I know of; the Mia one coming up and the digital world arc later on.

@@NitPik-p3rI actually do have an explanation for this: Yami actually doesn’t know the game as well as Yugi. Yami is very strategic and confident, but Yugi is the one with the game knowledge and the cards and combos needed to win. It’s implied that the thing that holds Yugi back throughout the series is his lack of confidence and not willing to make decisive moves that Yami has no issue pulling off. Meanwhile Yami needs the knowledge of the game, certain strategies and something to hold him back and help him accept a loss. So basically Yugi is talking because he’s the one that knows the strategies and catches things Yami doesn’t.

Kinda surprised that you didn’t point out Yugi was betting 6 stars to Mai’s 8. Granted Joey could’ve put up a couple of his but at least Yugi offered something else to wager against weevil to make it fair Panic was just an idiot to go along with this.
Also as a kid I just assumed yugi killed him with his own fire given we don’t ever see Panic ever again after this aside from a cameo in the 4th season as a soul that wants vengeance when Atem walks to duel Yugi.

@@NitPik-p3r I can totally see Panic being that confident, and granted I’ve never seen the original Japanese version of it but they never say in the English dub “I banished him to the shadow realm” so you can see why I thought that.
Truly enlightening and bright minded jokes in this episode and what a burn of a Duel :D In my childhood I had a similar experience of "genius" puns, because the German version is based on the US version, so we had most of the BS 4kids did, translated pretty closely. Back then I thought I was the dumb one ... But the dubbed versions really shared the same lack of logic and cheesy jokes.

But as a result, as a child, I never saw Kuriboh in the Weevil or the Reaper of the Card in this duel.

Also, as someone in the comments also mentioned, Mako's water is much much worse. When he summoned Kairyushin and flooded the field, Yugi was left with only 1 monster zone. Here he had 5.

yeah - a lot of comments are noting that. I personally never saw that version. Even on my first watch as a kid. The two part episode is how I remembered it.
I need to go back and watch the PaniK duel... it's probably just the Mandela Effect, but for some reason I remember the Duel being 1 Episode, and then the next episode, gave us part of the PaniK duel.. again, but it also included some montage with music playing over it, and we saw the Duel end again. Am I wrong on this??

@@NitPik-p3r I don't remember which station it was on when Airing. Kids WB sounds right, then it maybe moved to Cartoon Network (Like Pokémon did). It's just odd! Idk if Hulu or Netflix will have it as I remember or not.
On television, it was 1 episode. They played an original song from the show called "I'm Not Going to Panik" and sped through the portions of the duel (like a music video) after Yami plays Swords of Revealing Light up until he destroys Reaper of the Cards.
The full 2 episode duel in the dubbed version, without the music, was released on the Series DVD set and streaming.

I remember it being 3 episodes. The guy wouldn't shut up. Panik, Arkana, regular Marik and Yami Bakura are the most repetitive villains in this show. Kaiba also in Battle City talking about taking the God cards.

Why would even Pegasus hire a eliminator for his own tournament? Taking out weak dealists? Wouldn't weak duelist being easy prey to more expirence duelists? Strong duelist? Why Pegasus crown any unworthy duelist? Force a duelist do well in a tournament?

@@NitPik-p3r If it was Kaiba on Season 2, it would make sense. On Season 1, he just making the tournament end faster. (Unless Pegasus had to face Panik in a Duel?) It isnt like Pegasus order him to get Millennium itens which is Pegasus' true goal.
They explain that in the manga:
There were 40 duelists on the island, meaning 80 star chips total, but Pegasus only wanted 4 duelists in the finals so he hired the eliminators (or "player killers" as they're called in the manga) to collect the extra 40 star chips.
It was basically an additional challenge for the tournament, you had to win your 10 star chips, but you also had to defeat the bosses roaming around the island trying to eliminate the player to keep them.

honestly u could remove tea from the show and nothing would change, the only thing I can think of that would change is her dual vs one of the big five later on in the virtual world but you could just change her for maybe duke and then it could be Tristan and Serenity taking on the big five member that in the end took Tristan's body rather then having a 3v1 dual, i really can not stand her
Yeah. Anything she does can be replaced. I think the biggest scene she has is in season 2 when her and Mokuba are kid napped then form a temporary friendship that prompts Kaiba to help her out to repay her

This whole episode doesn't make sense to me. Why are there eliminators in a tournament? I mean how are participants in this tournament supposed to progress if an outside party force their pray into a duel and take their starships automatically if they lose. Not that there hasn't been fowl play, I mean its only been a week and nobody has responded to the cheating and theft. And Mai being forced into a duel and terrorized her into losing. Granted the host of this tournament is corrupt and a cheater as well so I guess it speaks for itself.
The whole tournament is an expensive cover for Pegasus to capture the Puzzle. If he defeats Yugi he gets the Puzzle, yes, but also if anyone under his employ defeats Yugi it counts the same as his victory, as far as Millenium Items Rules go. So he allows his henchmen to run wild on the island and as long as one of them gets a shot at the King of Games it's a good thing, or otherwise gives Pegasus more insight into Yugi's dueling methods.

Yami does it too. He did it against Kaiba in the first episode, he uses the wall of kuribohs multiple times, he uses magical hats.

And given how so many duelists cheat in this show, Kuriboh and magical hats are more than fair in comparison.

@@GojiraFan-in9ooDude, in both duels against Kaiba in Duelist Kingdom, as soon as Blue Eyes hit the field Yami went hiding. In the first duel behind the Swords of Revealing Light and in the second one behind the wall of Kuribohs. Which going by what he told Panik, would 100% make him a coward.
While yes, Swords of Revealing Light, wall of Kuribohs and Magical Hats were fair plays, Panik's darkness was fair as well. So, do not call someone a coward for doing exactly what you did many times.
@@NitPik-p3r several characters use swords of revealing light, and there's multiple different counters for that card in the show, one of which Yugi even uses.
Why would anyone assume Yami Bakura would return? He went to the GY and was attacked by the Reaper. Everyone would assume he was gone for good.
His return was a massive surprise.
Yeah but they didn’t know he was killed by the reaper. From their pov they don’t really know what happened. And after the panik duel they should be doing some discussing trying to make sense of it all
@@NitPik-p3rit likely happened off-screen. As we saw Tristan in the graveyard and Joey almost get slashed by the reaper and Yami Bakura chased by it, that's 3 ways the show displayed to us how to die in a duel. Talking about it would be redundant (which I know is funny in a show where everyone points out the obvious).
Plus I think they think it was a dream.
