Anil Chitrakar is a social entrepreneur. He is trained as an engineer and energy planner at the University of Rajasthan (India) and the University of Pennsylvania (US). He commenced his career as an energy engineer at the then RONAST (Royal Nepal Academy of Science and Technology), where he ventured into remote areas of Nepal to implement renewable energy technologies.
Subsequently, he initiated conservation education campaigns aimed at mobilizing youth and school children, fostering learning experiences beyond the classroom. He is an Ashoka Fellow. He joined the National Conservation Strategy team for Nepal and went on to head the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Nepal office.
Anil Chitrakar’s endeavors have predominantly focused on heritage conservation and environmental management throughout Nepal. His accomplishments include being named one of the 100 "Global Leaders for Tomorrow" by the World Economic Forum in Davos in 1993 and receiving the Tech Award in Silicon Valley for his contributions to renewable energy technologies. Presently, he continues to advance his career in renewable energy, biodiversity, and heritage conservation.
He served as the Chairperson of the Himalayan Climate Initiative and played a pivotal role in launching the 1,550 km long Great Himalayan Trail in Nepal. He is also actively involved in the Kailash Sacred Landscape team and currently presides over Siddharthinc, a private initiative dedicated to market development.
Chitrakar is an author of two books: 'Take the Lead: Nepal's Future has Begun' and 'अघि बढौं'.
