  • In this video I’ll teach you how to color your traditional sketches digitally in Photoshop! I say Photoshop but everything except for step 3 (separating the sketch) will work in Procreate (in that case you can use the multiply and color underneath method instead)! Thank you so much for watching (and thank you for 1,000 subscribers)! I hope this tutorial was helpful! Please let me know what I could improve on in the comments to make the next one better!

Always prefer traditional since you feel like you are in control. Digital makes it easier to color but I'm honestly intimidated by the number of layers being used.

Something I think that helps a lot if you want to get more comfortable with sketching digitally is finding the right brush and the right settings that are most comfortable to you. Maybe I'll do a video about this 🤔

Me neither, actually! I just can make humans in digital (since I have practiced more with them), but if they have a very complicated pose or if it's an animal, Pokemon, whatever? I'm forced to make a sketch in traditional.
So I'm forcing myself to make lineart in digital from scratch lol. Pain.

I actually enjoy occasionally sketching with a ballpoint or fineliner without pencil because it forces me to own my mistakes and be more meaningful with my strokes. I think some people get lazy with erasable materials or digital art.

This is how I did it as well! I've gotten more comfortable doing a drawing start to finish digitally since then but if I'm sketching just to sketch then traditionally 100%! And you have a great point about having more color options when working digitally! Sometimes it's so hard to blend with traditional supplies! Thank you! 💕

Remember viewers, RUclips’s algorithm gives a higher placement to videos that have it thumbs up as well as a comment, so I help your favorite artist out and give a thumbs up and just comment anything and if you want to make a reply to a comment, that’s a bonus! As for your question of the video . . . I sketch very sparingly, and these days I only use paper and pencil. I am doing my best to leave the digital world behind and work in the traditional fields from now on. Let's see if I can do it! For those following along, Erika is doing a fantastic job and is giving away many stupendous pointers! Many that take years to learn on your own!

This is the best of both worlds for me. I don't like drawing digitally and prefer the feeling of control I have with a pencil and pen. However I enjoy the wide range of shading and coloring options available digitally to add finishing touches to my art in a much less painless manner, infinite retries!

I colour my sketches digital all the time! I generally set the sketch photo to grayscale, change back to RBG, then a combo of brightness/contrast and level adjustments. Most of the time I can't pick back up every very fuzzy details, so I have to accept some loses. Once I'm happy I set the photo to multiply and then colour on layers underneath!

I like sketching traditionally because I am very spontaneous when I want to draw and can loose momentum fast. So pulling out a pencil and a notebook is way faster than hooking up my drawing tablet. If I wait too long to actually start I loose that creative Jumpstart and hit artist block.

I sketch traditionally and then screenshot it and do the rest of the work in digital as I don't have colored pencils nor a black marker and erasing is super hard traditionally.
At the end of the drawing, the sketch part will be completely gone and replaced with a digital version but I guess it's worth it as I'm not that comfortable yet with a tablet. Also cuz I have screen time and would like to use it up to do daily illustrations instead.

if i could give any tips, i would say to actually learn realism (doesn't have to be photorealism just proper anatomy of a face/body/etc.) before starting to stylize your art. It will make the artwork come out looking nicer and i think *you have to know the rules to be able to break them*. It takes time and practice, i would look at references and break them down into simple shapes so it's easier to understand. Sorry if that came off kinda rude, I'm just trying to help... But hey- do want you want! it's art, there are no rules :)

I personally take a shot go Black and white, lower the brightness intensity and sharpen the b/w contrast in curves. This process is even easier with the Action tools. Its not a precise maneuver but its a fast one if you have multiple drawings. About the question in the end. Deffinitly traditional. There is nothing like the feel and sound of the paper under the pen. And the result is real, to have the original paper somewhere around me makes the work more then just 1s and 0s. It's like having a real girlfriend instead of a digital one.

I probably can't make a whole video about it lol, but here's a quick guide:
      1. Push the "+" button (it's the same button you push for when you wanna add a new layer)
      2. Instead of adding a new layer, select "add image by taking a photo" or "select image to add" if you've already taken the photo and it's somewhere in your gallery
      3. Once you've added the photo it'll immediately say "extract lineart?" And then you push "yes"
      4. You will be given three bars; black point, midtone, and white point. You then just mess around with them until the lineart is on a certain opacity and intensity that you like (this is tricky to play around with, but it makes it easier when the photo you've taken is very clear and has good lighting)
Once you've done all this not only will you be able to draw under the traditional lineart layer, but you can also erase some of the lineart as well! ♡♡ Hope this helps

I don't know how, but it must be possible to do in Photoshop something that's a bit simpler to deal with the linework of scanned/photographed art. "Color to alpha" or to transparency is the process/filter/tool. You'd open the dialog or tool, then pick white to replace with transparency, then you'd be left with pretty much what you'd have if you had actually done all the linework all digitally on a transparent layer, with a digital brush that was indistinguishable from the actual pencil. It's rather simple to do that in GIMP and Krita, and it seems something Photoshop would also have available in a very simple way, like a dialog with some sliders for tweaks, not requiring all the back and forth with creation of those sub-layer or channels and their inversion and whatnot. Even if ultimately you'd want the texture of the paper itself and some of the gradient of light you could always keep the original in an untouched layer underneath and bring up whatever parts you'd want.
