although criticizing our old art is fun cause we feel smart doing that lol, i found that to be not very healthy, so im trying not to, though feeling proud about my old and sucky art personally sounds weirdly narcisistic :')

Everyone should realize that you really have to practice and LEARN to become better, otherwise you'll stay where you are
I want to do the same thing but my regret is letting people’s opinions stop my learning of art. Then I started to be critical of my own art because it didn’t meet people’s standards of good. Now I’m picking it up again, I see how important time is in order to get better at something, if only my younger self would have known.

As far as I know, using reference can teach you to copy In a easier way. You see a reference, you try to draw it with lines and shapes. Over a period of time, you will learn how to draw things by dividing into simple shapes and lines. Right now, I masted the art of coping by using reference, but now I have to start drawing by not using reference. So yeah, using reference can help you till an extent. I hope I am not wrong. 😅
I am a perfectionist and it ruined my motivation for art. I stopped drawing for more than 3 years and all these years I have been feeling so anxious and guilty that I couldn't draw at all. These few days, I'm slowly working on the drawing that I didn't finish back then in 2016. This video came at the right timing, I'm glad that it tells me more than just "keep on practicing". Although I have to relearn so many things, I'm going to make sure that I don't stop drawing ever again.. Thanks for the great video!!
Same here! I studied at a terrible art school. All the time I listened that my drawings are "too anime" or we've listened how much we suck in something - literally in everything. Well ... critique is fine, but that was just too much, because in the end we had a feel that we're not good in nothing. And all the time I've been trying to go away from anime style, even thought it wasn't that much anime or I was trying to draw something in Disney style, because "that was the right style" according to teachers. And that was sooo wrong. After I eneded that school I wasn't able to draw for 2 years, because when I grabbed a pencil I felt anxious and guilty like you, I felt like.. I sucked all these years, why do I even try. And now I started to draw again and I started to feel happy about it. Funny thing? I started to learn drawing tips from the internet and I quickly became so much better than on school, also I lost my "anime" style because I just learned the right ways (shapes) how to draw. Sorry for the long text, wanted to share my story. We shouldn't give up anymore :)
For me I think my art has gotten worse, i used to be really good at drawing dynamic poses, details, and even hands. I think it’s because I started to post it online (not saying where) and now I basically don’t draw for myself anymore, it’s always going to be posted online or plan it to be posted online...I had fun drawing before I started posting...now it’s gotten less enjoyable than it used to be...I’m going to try my best to not post everything I draw online anymore, I’ll just keep some of my drawings to myself and let my drawings be messy. Thank you Erika for helping me figure this out
I’ve gone through this before and for me the solution was to stop posting my art. If you don’t want to stop posting art, take breaks! Take some time to try out new art styles, backgrounds, pens, poses & etc ^
Sometimes I think I've been too hard on my self concerning my art and it's all just because I desperately want to get better, sometimes no matter what I draw I'm never satisfied and I keep seeing the mistakes I make despite the time and effort I put into that piece, the whole process sometimes makes me depressed and then I take a break for a while and start all over again and it just seems like I'm not improving, worse is that I don't even think I have an art style yet cause I draw a lot of random things
That's how i feel to i desperately finding my own art style to get better on arts and because i always redraw random stuff i haven't learn anything only to make my lineworks better and i dont know what to do to be able to improve myself......im greatful that i am not the only one experiencing it
Sorry that you experience it. Are you that hard on yourself in other aspects of your life? Do you compare your art with others? Do you break it down a little bit (into smaller details/compose)? It's okay to not having/knowing your style yet, I don't and I used to be frustrated too. But less now because I don't focus too much on the end result but the process, if it's not good today, it will be someday and I can fix what I can. It will never be perfect. Be proud of yourself for at least trying
Yeah, I feel exactly the same. I share my few arts online and every time I feel extremely ashamed or something. I'm trying do get better, but it's really depressing to seem to go nowhere. Almost hating your art is really bad.
This video is by far one of the most helpful "how to improve" art video I've seen. I've been drawing seriously for five or six years now, and because I'm having to take the semester off from art school due to this Covid situation, I've decided to really focus on growing my art abilities and preparing a portfolio for an internship. So I've been searching for like the last 2 weeks to gather advice, and this is the first video where I'm like "I'm going to have to watch this again just to write everything down" because there is just SO much useful information in here! Like other videos would suggest using references or drawing frequently, but not *how* to use references and study them or *what* to draw when drawing frequently. I'm just gonna leave this comment here (even though I barely comment on the internet) because I just needed to say it. This video is SUPER helpful and is inspiring me to pick up a pencil right now to go apply these things to my art. So THANK YOU! I really, really appreciate you taking the time out of your day to give such helpful advice to all the budding artists out there!
14:17 got me really thinking of my art "journey". I got into art because i wanted to be one of the Winx so so bad, so i got my computer mouse and drew with it in ms paint. Such a beautiful memory
try drawing the square and then mark the fingers with simple lines, then build on that. make sure to use references for the first stages. and for the shading, so that you understand how the skin wraps around the fingers and how the muscles work.
Just go behind the nearest art store try drawing a hand and tap on the ground twice. Just don’t look him in the eyes and ask him for what you want easy peasy now you can draw hands just don’t focus on the demon on your shoulder.

Good day :)
I just turned 14 and I’ve been drawing since around age 5. I just started taking my art seriously a good 2 or 3 years ago. I’m now trying to improve myself more and actually LEARN to get better.
This was super helpful especially when it comes to references. I actually will sketch or break down parts of the photo as you showed it helps me with joint structure, even though I used to think it was cheating. I hate that the internet pushes this narrative that learning and using reference is cheating like what? Talented artists didn’t just wake up one day and understand everything. It often takes years and years to get to their level because there’s a lot that goes into understanding the workflow, tools, and the fundamentals. I never thought of making a video for poses, so I’m going to try this. I’d rush with a camera timer, but a video is a lot smarter!
I absolutely love your realism and professionalism in your approach and teaching your viewers. I love the idea of breaking art down into more of a career growth plan (instead of myself who just would get overwhelmed by the talent of everyone that I felt stagnant). also totally agree on the breaks. I unfortunately look a 2 year break and I fell backwards hard on my skill.
I've seen a lot of videos like this but I've never heard the point you made about writing what it is you like about other artists and making a concrete list of them. I think writing things done makes sure you actively keep those things in mind when doing your art.
Thank you, Miss Erika. This video is really inspirational. I'm a beginner, hobbyist digital art, and I was really struggling with how to do digital art, and what if I make mistakes, etc, etc, but after watching your video, I'm finally able to understand a lot of things which I didn't get before. Thank you so much.
I feel this video so much! When I finished my studies in 3D animation and started my career I essentially stopped drawing (only sketching now and then) and I am really trying to get back into it. This video def help me mind myself to better myself :)
Another tip (I found) is try to change up your medium. I recently brought a book that actually is designed for sketching (and some shading stumps etc) and trying them out and exploring what the hell they do it was so surreal, changed my style completely and makes it so much more exciting to draw for exploration sake.
Hey I love your art so much ! And I follow you on Instagram and I have a lot of negativity around my art and am dealing with depression 2 things that really prevent me from doing it are feeling like I should have drawn a lot more consistently and started from a young age to be better now and this makes me feel like I’m not an artist and the other is thinking that my art looks like another artists work although I’m trying so hard to improve and make it original
thank you! this helped so much. ive been drawing for 10 years and i have not improved as much as ive wanted to, and ive finally decided to take initiative of my drawing skills and draw better sketches and understand art more and this is exactly what i needed!
Nice way of thinking, I recently got to the point where I just figured out that I have to start doing it, become independend, overcoming my fear of showing my art on social media, ect. I actually think that at some point most ppl get frustrated cuz they think they arent improving, then they pause and live is taking over, and as you say its harder the longer the break goes because it´s no longer part of your routine. Great video! Looking forward to browse through your channel!
I think I found this video in the right moment, and almost cried watching it... I just feel sooo frustrated and soo bad at what I draw, I even plan to leave my career because of the anxiety... Just want to say, thanks for this video! The advice you gave here are so important! I just forgot why even I draw... It's because I love it! I love to create things and this helped me to remember it, thank you ❤️
This is such a great video. At the moment I don’t like my art and feel as if it’s horrible but this is just so helpful. I usually take a week break whenever I can’t draw or hate it and it does work for me
Hi Erika, ty for the vid. I'm a newbie artist. Just been drawing for a month and focusing for now in face ilustrations. Love drawing female faces as they seem more fun to draw, but i'm in kind of a "crisis". I hate drawing from a front perspective, and profile view is really hard for me, so i've been focusing in 3/4 views. The thing is most of the time i feel all my drawings are the same, even if they're different persons/characters, and i'm afraid of what others can say about it, specially the "dude your drawings are so similar one to another". I know 3/4 perspective is used much more than a front view, but i don't know what to do to get this feeling away.... Thanks in advance in case you read this, love your content
Hello :) you could also try to play with the angles and lighting, those might make your drawings look different even when they are all in 3/4 view. Of course practicing will eventually get you to drawing front and profile too, I’m sure :) good luck and have fun drawing!
Focus on the eyes. Make some eyes more circular, make some more triangular. Eyes can make a big difference when it comes to the face. For the front view, just start with a circle, draw the face in it, hen outline the face where you want the jaw to be and stuff. Hope that helps.
After I graduated high school a year ago, I pretty much stopped drawing. Now I want to get back. I want to improve and make me feel good about it again!
This helped a ton. I honestly had a hard time looking for videos that could help me, I felt like most of them said the same thing BUT, this video really made me think of the things I've been missing. Thank you!
12:00 when i take a break it's mostly 2 hours to watch a movie/anime or play with my cats xD if i don't draw for only one day i will feel guilty since i know if i don't go back to draw right away i will keep procrastinating TuT Btw Great video i really find those tips so helpful and i liked that you gave a lot of info ,thank u
you shouldnt feel that way! its ok to take breaks from art and taking breaks has been the most time where i improved. its ok to procrastinate sometimes dont draw dont think about drawing just enjoy your free time and when u come back ur gonna think with alot of more positive thoughts and gonna feel better.
I just wanted to simply thank for this inspiring and motivating video. Had some struggles with improving my art and it got in my feelings, but your video helped me get on a track again :)
I was drawing you while i was watching this and I like how I drew the body and the hair but the face could use some work. It was really fun drawing you and I think i'll be drawing with reference more often. I also like the fact that its more realistic than my usual style which is way more cartoony when I wanted it to be semi-realistic.
I would also recommend trying to finish or push through paintings you messed up etc. I feel like it helps by telling you: yo, you finished me and I don’t even look that bad
I am only twelve and when I decided to finally take my art seriously I worked really hard but I didn't improve because I was get frustrated with every little mistake so I took a big brake and now I am back and I drew my first ever anime character deku or izuku midoria and it was amazing but I used these steps so I can do better on todoroki and it worked this was such a helpful video thank u u has a new subscriber
You remind me of my self when I used to draw in text comprehension class 🤣🤣 in the notebook that was supposed to be used to write the new words and synonymes.
My steps do a ruff trace (break down) of life or an unfinished then do a ruff sketch over it next I will do a clean up sketch and finally the line art color shading all that stuff
I used to draw so much and it was my favourite hobby. But because of people's rude opinions and expressions from seeing my art, I lost motivation and I didn't draw for 2 years straight. It felt like a piece of me was taken away for so long and whenever I see art related stuff on any social media,I'd just block it. But now I wanna get back into drawing but when I tried to draw something, it looked worse than a 2 year old's work.
I love this video so much. I'm so glad I came aross it. I feel as if I feel like- I need to practice my anatomy alot now because like- I often put my poses and what not in wrong places and I end up having to ask for help(I should probably say tips on how to fit my mistake)or I get told it looks bad🤷♀️ :/
The one thing I hate is with my art style I don’t like to color it and when I do it’s like the blush or something but then when your drawing for a art project at school my teachers says “ _make sure to color_ ” then I die inside
I took a break of consistently drawing for about 10 years now and I am okay at drawing, but not as good as I used to be. It is very frustrating, but I have been drawing more here lately.
9:10 but like when you have a really stylised style like yours, it's hard to find references. like i made a profile drawing recently and it looks nothing like my style as i made it too realistic. learning how exactly to exaggerate is hard uwu
Thank you so much for this video it kind of helped me with thinking my art isnt THAT bad.. its my dream to make digital drawing animations, which in fact im making one right now, but its hard for me because im doing it ALL on my pc and theres not really much drawing apps for laptops *Which is why my drawings sucks* But anyways my mom is gonna buy me a ipad soon (well after we get out of hard times) so im really looking forward to that because thats when i can have the apps i need to make art and animate and i am gonna make a channel for my animations. Last thing is that even though i feel like my drawings are bad i cannot stop thinking of animation so much so that im gonna animate on my laptop, it may not be the best now but i cannot allow these good animation ideas go past my mind without even drawing them. Thank u for making this video, it really helps me a lot.

I've seen a lot of videos like this but I've never heard the point you made about writing what it is you like about other artists and making a concrete list of them. I think writing things done makes sure you actively keep those things in mind when doing your art.
Wow! You are very knowledgeable and super positive! You make a good instructor. Will see more of videos.....
I was drawing while watching and I was listening and I felt really good about my art! Thanks for the video
I really enjoy listening to you.
You seem so sweet and encouraging. Thank you for the content you provide and for the beautiful art you post 🙂
thank you! this helped so much. ive been drawing for 10 years and i have not improved as much as ive wanted to, and ive finally decided to take initiative of my drawing skills and draw better sketches and understand art more and this is exactly what i needed!
The part about improving the most when you're not trying, when you're drawing what you love, I felt that so much!
This video lights me up! I’m watching and actually taking notes all the way through
joining in on small contests are a great way to get a project with a deadline whether you enter or not, just participating is fun
This helped a ton. I honestly had a hard time looking for videos that could help me, I felt like most of them said the same thing BUT, this video really made me think of the things I've been missing. Thank you!
That last one really helped, i suffer from depression though and most of the things i used to like are slipping away. Im really trying though.
Thank you so much, I can't even tell you how much this helped me, i even wrote on stick notes and put it on my wall.
12:00 when i take a break it's mostly 2 hours to watch a movie/anime or play with my cats xD if i don't draw for only one day i will feel guilty since i know if i don't go back to draw right away i will keep procrastinating TuT
Btw Great video i really find those tips so helpful and i liked that you gave a lot of info ,thank u
you shouldnt feel that way! its ok to take breaks from art and taking breaks has been the most time where i improved. its ok to procrastinate sometimes dont draw dont think about drawing just enjoy your free time and when u come back ur gonna think with alot of more positive thoughts and gonna feel better.
I love how this is actually helpful for begginers and not the usual "Want to get better at drawing? Do this (draw something amazingly professional)"
Wonderful Video Erika! Super concise and real world "helps" for every person watching! Oh your hair is looking quite lovely too.
I just wanted to simply thank for this inspiring and motivating video. Had some struggles with improving my art and it got in my feelings, but your video helped me get on a track again :)
no because now im crying, thank you
Your hair is BEAUTIFUL!!
thank you so much! this is very helpful 💕 i watch a lot of videos like but you’re advices are definitely gonna stick with me the most.
I was drawing you while i was watching this and I like how I drew the body and the hair but the face could use some work. It was really fun drawing you and I think i'll be drawing with reference more often. I also like the fact that its more realistic than my usual style which is way more cartoony when I wanted it to be semi-realistic.
Thanks for the thoughtful video!
Also, your hair looks great.
i cant describe, this video is so beautiful 😭
I am discovering your channel with this video. This was really the best video i ve seen this day. Keep going the wonderful work ;)
I draw everyday, and I never stop!
I would also recommend trying to finish or push through paintings you messed up etc.
I feel like it helps by telling you: yo, you finished me and I don’t even look that bad
How to improve life: You can get a doggy! You can get another doggy! You can dance with them! Faith in humanity is restored!
Hi Erika!!! I absolutely love your art and this video is amazing!!! You hit such important points I'm so glad you made it! Thank You
This was such a helpful video! I've been in the longest art block lately and it felt so hard to get back into it. Thanks so much for this
This was great! Such valuable information that's not really shared anywhere else. Thank you for taking the time to share it! :)
I loved Sly Cooper and Neopets. You had great taste as a kid!!
I've been hearing the problem solving thing quite a bit actually! It does make a lot of sense!
I love this video and all of your art!!!! Keep doing you Erika!
All I needed to hear!
Great tips! I hadn't thought of checking out an art school curriculum, or keeping a special study notebook, and now I'm feeling kind of dumb, LOL!
This video was just what i needed! Your tips on growing as an artist are really helpfull, thans you so much Erika!
this was so helpful and i’m really glad i stumbled upon it! thank you :)
You remind me of my self when I used to draw in text comprehension class 🤣🤣 in the notebook that was supposed to be used to write the new words and synonymes.
Thanks for the help!😁😋
My steps do a ruff trace (break down) of life or an unfinished then do a ruff sketch over it next I will do a clean up sketch and finally the line art color shading all that stuff
This is the absolute best video I've ever seen about this topic, you helped me a lot, thank you very very very very much 🙏🙏🙏🙏
Dude this was the most helpful video I’ve seen yet 😭😭😭❤️❤️❤️
GOOD WORK ON THE THUMBNAIL!Also thx for the tips!
Absolutely loved your motivational talk at the end. 😍😍 Thanks to you I feel free and motivated again. 😄
I really needed to hear all this
I used to draw so much and it was my favourite hobby.
This was the first art improvement video which was helpful for me
And
THANK YOU SOO MUCH !!
I do like this video, its inspired me and helped me more then ever. I'm not the best artist but thank you! I study your art a lot!
Very inspirational advice. Thank you!
Wow, an art tutorial that's actually useful for intermediate artists, thanks so much
I used to think my art was REALLY bad, but when I found this, this helped me a lot! So I want to say Thank you!
Thank you for the advice. I will keep it in mind.
I took a break of consistently drawing for about 10 years now and I am okay at drawing, but not as good as I used to be. It is very frustrating, but I have been drawing more here lately.
as an artist i think this was easy for me thank u!
What happens if you use a different art style for the whole bodies drawings and a different art style for an only face+neck drawing?
Whenever I draw quietly my mind is completely blank but when I start watching a youtube video a bunch of ideas just randomly pop into my head
i love her she understand Art
this video was incredibly helpful and inspiring!
Thanks for posting! Building my influence board tonight.
Dunno if anyone’s told you this but you have awesome eyebrows 💯
Gosh thank you for this simple video with such great lessons
9:10 but like when you have a really stylised style like yours, it's hard to find references. like i made a profile drawing recently and it looks nothing like my style as i made it too realistic. learning how exactly to exaggerate is hard uwu
It's hard to make your own style when you see other people's styles and trying to draw like them alwaysss
OwU well i don’t really do that exactly so i wouldn’t know but ok
Thank you so much for this video it kind of helped me with thinking my art isnt THAT bad.. its my dream to make digital drawing animations, which in fact im making one right now, but its hard for me because im doing it ALL on my pc and theres not really much drawing apps for laptops *Which is why my drawings sucks*
But anyways my mom is gonna buy me a ipad soon (well after we get out of hard times) so im really looking forward to that because thats when i can have the apps i need to make art and animate and i am gonna make a channel for my animations.
Last thing is that even though i feel like my drawings are bad i cannot stop thinking of animation so much so that im gonna animate on my laptop, it may not be the best now but i cannot allow these good animation ideas go past my mind without even drawing them.
Thank u for making this video, it really helps me a lot.
I see the little Sobble in the background and i salute you 😔 ❤️
I too was obsessed with Sly Cooper & that was all I drew too 😍
Me using reference be like:
looks pretty good
my imagination:
what do I want to draw?....20 mins later....WHAT in the %$%$% is that
Lol me
