Having worked at a place with pocket doors I can tell you this. When they fail. They fail miserably and are much harder to repair than a swing out door.

    • @robinbirdj743

They often aren’t in working order. I have some; one slides well, one doesn’t. For that reason, I cannot use them (yet). The last house I was in had them too. It was c 1898. The pocket doors worked but banged a bit upon opening, squeezed, and barely fit. I think they were made a bit short. For that reason, they weren’t super convenient. I had stripped them partially and had to sell the house. Wonder if they remained, but I hope so!

I am SO GLAD you took the time to speak about why all the woodwork on the second floor is painted. That is the number one thing that irks me about older homes with beautiful woodwork. Every single time a home goes on the market, somebody decides it will look cleaner and brighter and bigger for prospective buyers if they slap white paint everywhere. I live in an area that has so many gorgeous old homes, but finding one with original, unpainted woodwork is nearly impossible. SO...after seeing all that SPECTACULAR woodwork on the first floor, I would have been grinding my teeth if you hadn't taken the time to explain why the second floor is painted. (I learned something, too.) Thank you. This home has truly wonderful original details. What a gem! Extraordinary.

Forty two years ago, I looked at a Queen Ann home that I wanted so badly. It had stayed in the family since it was built. It was in wonderful shape despite it’s age, and had a third floor ballroom, and the original cistern in the basement. It still had the original carriage house, and hitching post in the front of the house. I have never forgot about it, but I’m too old now to take care of it. At the time, it was at $84,000.

Not like I'm an expert (as I am def. not), but I KNOW if one wanted to build something like that today (firstly, virtually could not, as those materials are finite and we couldn't get them, at any price), it would cost multiple X the asking price, NO DOUBT whatsoever. What a beauty.

I heard that when there's a newel post statue on the staircase in the main entry (as in this house) it indicated the house was paid off (aka no mortgage). So if you had that and a visitor came, they'd know that fact. Have you heard that before? Wonder if that's true..... LOVELY house BTW.... It would be a treasure to own.

Breathtaking!! The wood and fireplaces are magnificent. Thank goodness no one ever got in there and painted the woodwork.
The tiles are gorgeous. I hope who ever bought it appreciated the stunning grandeur of this home. It took me years to find my 1924 home with all the woodwork never painted.

I’m used to thinking of Queen Anne houses as elegant but severely plain and very regular, whereas American Queen Anne is sumptuous and amazingly exuberant.
The only Norman Shaw building I’d previously seen was the famous New Scotland Yard building on the Victoria Embankment in London, which have appeared in so many 20th century detective films.
