How to solve a watercolor problem you didn’t know existed!

  • Everybody loves to swatch. I have heard people say that they buy paintboxes just to have the pleasure of swatching the contents. That they turn to a paintbox and swatch it just for the comfort factor… Now, that’s not to say I advocate that. I get my thrills elsewhere. But it’s undeniable that having a set of color chips to go with each box of paints you own is sometimes very handy. Especially when you don’t use a set very often. How to organise these color swatches? Here’s one solution I’m planning to make part of my studio routine from now on.

    You cracked me up with the pigeon story LOL LOL. I like 'life in Diane Antons world'. Love your sweet little sketches/paintings in your nature books. We have plenty of bluebells here in North America (states). Thanks for the little talk about wc paper. I fell all that 'correct' stuff a couple of years ago when I was determined to learn wc and after watching many many many vids decided I'd just feel my own way along and you have been most helpful to me, thank you! I can never think of doodles either, never heard of doodles (I'm 76 and don't know) because I've never been interested in art in my life except as a kid with my precious and highly coveted, guarded, precious coloring books and crayons all done in secret and no sharing....what the hey was that all about? Idk. Btw I bought those 'Fudenosuke' pens last year (again because of you lol) and didn't know they worked that way...excuse me while go try them out :). Love love the doodles. I will be trying those out. Sorry for long winded me again. Thanks so much for sharing another wonderful vid!!

      Hi Kathy and you’re not long-winded, I’m so glad to read your messages, it’s fun and helpful! I think most of our followers are like you, finding their own way and enjoying it. I watched a video lesson last night on Craftsy with a lady who teaches pencil and watercolor paint used together. Her teaching is incredibly prescriptive and rule based and I think that kind of art teaching has inhibited a lot of women like us and stopped us feeling that art can be fun. She makes it into hard work. Brilliant women, brilliant work and completely out of reach of most of us. Bound to cause phobias or disappointment at least. Anyway, that’s my rambling for the morning! Looking forward to your next message, goodbye from the pigeons!

      @@DianeAntoneStudio And I love your 'ramblings' also :D. Yes I agree fun stuff turning into being 'incredibly prescriptive, rule based and hard work. I've struggled with learning and understanding things all my life. Though I'm not a 'special need' (oh I'm needy alright and it's always all about me, friends and family can attest to that, actually I'm just a goofy old lady lol but they love me, I'm pretty sure? haha) I want whatever remaking years I have with this new journey I've started....art, to be fun, relaxing. Stress for various reasons have started to creep into my husband's and my life and at the end of the day we want to just breathe and play at hobbies for a while before bedtime. Have a super wonderful day, or eve. It's1:30 pm here so clue what part of the day you are entering....I'm too lazy to look it up. But now I think I will!😀

The worst times in my life are almost completely undocumented because I couldn’t bring myself to even create sentences in my diary. So glad you managed to kick that bad influence, and to enjoy making color happen. Absolutely - make some messes we can control, and for a while forget about the ones we can’t influence. @DianeAntoneStudio  Месяц назад +2

      Hi Nichole, there’s been a lot of hype around Arches in the last few years, quite undeserved in my opinion - I’ve used it on and off all my painting life and it is very good for watercolors which are done in many layers, as it takes a lot of water and holds the pigment. But for ordinary daily work it’s totally over the top, and I find it sucks my paint in. I prefer cellulose, maybe I’m just cheap!

People are passionate it about it, ha! :) By the way, thanks for keeping me company in the studio! I really enjoy your videos!

Your ideas for the swatch cards is just like I did to mine years ago. However I never thought to put sketches on the swatches and I'm now in love with this idea again. I have always been in love with your bird drawings and animals ones too. I would ask politely to see a few more animals here and there. Oh, the bee is adorable (still have a little bit of fear of them. Stupid, I know. ..but the stings of childhood are remembered too clearly). Hi Diane! I love your swatching idea! If I had room I would make a fairly large swatch charts for my different brands of paint and tape it on my wall. I think swatches are beautiful! But my space is limited. I guess I can always wish. 😁
    The thing about buying sketchbooks and paper is that it’s important to get 100% cotton. If you do any kind of glazing it is really important. I painted a beautiful watercolor deer on an 8 x 10 sheet of fabriano artistico 25% cotton paper and I almost ruined my painting trying to glaze over it. The paper was horrible. It was lifting up my previous layer of paint. I used good paint ~ Daniel Smith. Now I won’t use anything but 100 % cotton. I like etchr and fabriano artistico 100 %. Winsor and Newton has a good sketchbook. And I use arches paper. If I’m just doing simple painting like making cards or bookmarks etc. you can use cheaper paper. But when you are doing a nice painting that requires layers and glazing it is important to buy good quality paper. That’s why you hear Americans not liking sketchbooks that aren’t 100% cotton.

    • @DianeAntoneStudio
      @DianeAntoneStudio  Месяц назад

      Actually, it’s not the fibres in the paper that are crucial, it’s the sizing, the glue that is added to in the manufacturing process. I have used lots of good quality cellulose papers which happily accept layering. Cheap paper might not. And there is also some 100% cotton paper out there that is not suitable for the layering process, because it isn’t properly sized. Now that so many sketchbooks and paper pads are coming from China and there is very little information available about their manufacturing process it is beginning to be even more confusing. My choice at the moment is Meeden for beginners general purpose practice work, and Canson or Strathmore for watercolor journals, and Clairefontaine, Fabriano or Arches for special work.

      We have Jasper who is our ginger ninja and he’s always getting into fights! 🤦‍♀️ We’ve been to the vets a couple of times with infected bites! He wouldn’t cope with being on a leash though … he wants to be free and do what cats do! How is Arthur? I love him 😍

    Hi Diane! Your cat sounds funny! 😆🤩
    Is your Diane Antone set of Lady "Victoria" on sale? Because when I want to buy it directly from the link you put down, it asks me for a "promo code" and I can´t find it...Can you help me with that please?😇

      No, we don’t have a code I’m afraid, Victoria hasn’t given us one. Thanks for watching!
