You could have gotten the best director, writers, and actors behind this project and it still wouldn't have worked because you just can't turn a 20 episode show into a 2 hour movie. But, what truly went wrong was getting M. Night to head the project with actors who weren't experienced/right for the part to make the movie.
Allegedly, M. Night got the job because the creators of Avatar the Last Airbender actually approved of his script treatment. But then that treatment wound up getting tossed out by executives when filming actually went underway. Things like the casting choices among other things were also allegedly the fault of the producers. M. Night's problem was that he just stopped caring after the interference refused to stop.
@@chrisossu2070 Yeah I heard Katara’s actress was a daughter to a big named executive in Hollywood that the producers owned favors to so we're forced to cast her. This then affected Sokka’s casting since having a native American brother with a white sister would’ve looked awkward, so they casted someone to fit the actresses race.
Heck, Rango celebrated its 10th anniversary a few days ago now. And I remembered seeing this with my parents in the theater. Also forgot Imagine That even existed.
On the Native stuff - yeah theres like. A LOT. of pale skinned natives. Like its ridiculously common even among full blooded native ppl. My great-grandmother and great-grandfather are both full blooded natives, but theyre pale asf. Only two of their kids came out with dark skin, one of whom was my Nana. And then my Nana had my mom, whos also a full blood native, and she's been called white by a few ppl even tho facial feature-wise she looks VERY native. High cheek bones, flatter nose, strong jawline, etc. The only thing that makes her look white is her skintone LOL
Are they actually full-blooded? My great-grandfather was described as looking like a historical chief, but as it turns out, he was mostly Native, not fully. Frankly, there isn't any doubt in my mind that many who think they're full-blooded actually have a degree of Mediterranean blood.
@@SirBlackReeds I mean, the basis I use for 'full blooded' is moreso based on what the generational tree says up to a certain point. Since, in the end, humans have a little bit of other stuff sprinkled in no matter what due to our migratory habits, as well as inter-breeding between earlier established trade relations prior to colonization.
If I were to guess, less sunlight, though I'm pretty sure that character is joking on people who found out there are 1/18th Native American and then make it their whole thing

@@chillplayer1234 Nah, those don't really count. It was based on a highly established and very successful franchise and it was during a time when it was incredibly red hot. SpongeBob is still the golden god there at Nickelodeon, it's still the bar by which all shows succeed or fail. (Which is freaking ridiculous but then again I'm not an executive at Nickelodeon) As we went into the 2000s I feel like Nickelodeon definitely declined significantly when it came to movies. Both live action and animated for the most part (as I said with the exception of SpongeBob) we're an incredibly mixed bag and mostly even the good stuff just simply failed to really make a decent dent at the box office. What strange is even things like the highly successful (from what I can tell) Tintin movie never got a sequel. Nickelodeon got incredibly safe with the movies at about the 2010 mark and for the most part if it wasn't SpongeBob they wouldn't even bother.
As a British former teenage girl I loved Angus things and perfect snogging And I used to love hotel for dogs Weirdest thing is that the one guy who isn't the sibling or love interest is Barry from the Goldbergs
Fun Fact: During my short-lived time at Summer School back in 2011, and only once, the school staff decided to host a screening of Rango after lunch hour, in which the place the film was screened in was, if I can recall, a relatively medium-sized room with a blank white paint job, a projection screen placed next to the door, a bunch of metal chairs and the lights were permanently turned off the entire time. I also remember a bunch of those students laughing their asses off at the first few minutes of the film, mostly due to the titled protagonist not wearing any clothing, as well as some of the humor that carried along with it, and maybe the visuals alone as far as I can remember, yet at the same time, those said students were also disturbed by the looks of the film throughout the whole screening. Those were some weird times.
I remember watching Imagine That as a kid, and gosh golly did that movie bore me to death. Didn't even know this was supposed to be for kids before I watched this video.
Even when I was younger when the movie came out, the trailer didn't catch my interest because of how uninteresting it looked. I guess I was lucky and sorry what you went through.
I literally only remember "Ya like Scones?" "What are Scones??" From the adverts and nothing else (and I mean LITERALLY nothing else) That kid was super relatable tho, what the heck ARE scones 😆 (I of course learned afterwards)
My problem with people criticizing animated movies with real actors instead of "voice" actors is that acting and voice acting are one in the same. Any "experienced" voice actor can tell you that you still have to act like any normal movie. A lot of that is rarely seen. I'd recommend looking at Jack Black in the behind the scenes for the Kung Fu Panda movies. It's a great example. And Mark Hamil is an amazing example of a "real" actor who is absolutely gor tier when it comes to voices.
"Imagine that" was set and filmed in Denver, Colorado. I remember while watching it my family recognized a lot of the locations and my mom mentioned that shed seen the film crew in the city downtown.
I remember the promotional plush toys they had at McDonald’s for Hotel for Dogs and I genuinely collected all of them since they reminded me of ‘The Dog’ plushies they had once that I really loved, but for the movie itself I don’t remember jack shit 😅
Wasn't there a scene in Hotel for Dogs where they were listening in on dog catcher calls and that's how they found them? I remember them breaking out a couple dogs from their truck and one of them only had three legs, am I imagining that?
If he never does a video about Nickelodeon movies again, than it makes me wish The Last Airbender was the last movie talked about in this video because of the idea of this series starting with a segment of kids coming out of the movie they watched loving it, and ending with a segment of kids coming out of the movie they watched hating it.
My dad worked at a Cinemark when Last Airbender came out. I remember they were selling these glow-in-the-dark tattoos based on Aang's arrow markings, but you couldn't even wear half of them because they were designed to go around a bald head. Apparently they didn't sell well, either, because my dad brought a LOT home. I honestly sometimes wonder if Last Airbender was the reason my dad stopped working at Cinemark. He didn't get laid off or anything, but the sheer amount of backlash that box office bomb got was incredible. At least the tattoos were pretty sick.
I remember putting off wander over Yonder 'cause I thought it was going to **** because fosters home ***** I thought he was a one shot wonder but it's actually pretty good.
It's great to see Rango is becoming a cult classic among many 10 years later and I liked the film when I first saw it and now appreciate the love and attention it deserves. Glad also Verbinski is going to make two more animated films since the anniversary came by already.
@@Sammyyaam it's true, every kids movie was able to get a decent marketing budget and merchandise tie in back then. But I guess now with streaming, it's just become become a dumping ground for kids movies that are not Disney or Dreamworks.

I'm Cosalish Native American and just wanted to say Thank You so much for pointing out those tropes in 'Imagine THAT' It's not a subject people bring up commonly even when they see something that's uncomfortable or wrong about the way First Nations/Native Peoples can be portrayed and it made me feel very comforted!
Never once I questioned the entertainment I'm consuming more than watching Imagine That. Like, the great imagination world is just the actors pantomiming in an empty room, no animation, no CGI, nothing. How is this entertaining, even for little kids?
fun fact: I never saw any trailers for rango, i had NO IDEA what the movie was about until i watched it. I only saw it because the cover showed the main character, which was not only eye catching and memorable but gave the movie a quirky look, as the image was based on the opening scene of him in his glass enclosure. So imagine my surprise when this turned out to be some sort of low fantasy western with gross looking animals.
maybe Imagine That could've visually depicted the imaginary characters as cartoon characters, kind of like Who Framed Roger Rabbit idk maybe get Eric Goldberg to do the animation or something like that

I thought “Angus, Thongs” was a character named Angus Thong as a kid.
It's not?
@@rattyeely I think he knows that now.
Fun fact: before Rango, Gore Verbinski was going to direct the BioShock movie before plans had fell through
So is the Bioshock movie still happening or is it canceled?
@@kittykittybangbang9367 nope, it got cancelled
@Chxcky11 that’s not the same thing
@@pleoTCA, it would’ve been funny if it was Elizabeth’s first appearance and not Infinite.
That Matrix splice in the Hotel for Dogs segment was fuckin' genius.
_Rango is a pretty Underrated Movie. There's a lot to appreciate about it._
I remember watching the trailer for Imagine That and thinking “Oh, it’s like Bedtime Stories, but not as interesting”
I love Rango so much, it is so rare to find a big hollywood animated film where the reptiles are the heroes.
I fell asleep during the Last Airbender movie and woke up when yhe RhinoLizards where climbing the ice wall, then, i don't remember anything

F in the chat for those who have to wait another year for Pan to talk about Tin Tin
Rango is literally just a trippy sequel to Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas
Angus Thongs literally played everday, all day, 24/7 when it aired on Nick. Thanks for the ptsd flashbacks, Pan!
Ughh. That first movie's title is so unpleasant. That's honestly the only reason I never watched it.
Pan was right, there was ONE Nick at Nite airing of that movie in the USA for whatever reason and yes that movie title alone grossed me out and made me change the channel.
It’s based on a book series
@@gracekim1998 I know? He explained that?
@@kimifw58 Why're u asking if u knew? U should know if u knew. Also, yes, he explained it
@@Max25670 Fun fact: I actually caught that rare Nick at Night airing of the movie and even remember the promos for it! Prior to that, I used to think Fun Size was Nick's first PG-13 movie. (Well, it technically still is for its US premiere, but you get what I mean there).
I remember seeing Last Airbender in theatres, right behind my family was this little kid who shaved his head to an arrow, he started crying when the movie ended, I still think about that poor kid 9 years later.
Angus was too most British thing I saw on Nick, and it beat out a lot BBC programming I was watching then, now I find out that there's more!
I remember Hotel for Dogs, I was like "Y tho", (Waverly Place? You mean Young Neil from Scott Pilgrim!).
Seeing Yara Shihidi as a little girl in 2009, and knowing i was halfway through highschool made me instantly old...
Last Airbender, it might be worst or second worst adaptation of Avatar In live action once the Netflix series drops, so it has that.
Also I remember Rango winning a Oscar, so that's something.
Angus was directed Gurinder Chadha, she also directed Bend it Like Beckham with Keira Knightley.
Proofreading is a bitch, eh?
I remember they put it on Nickelodeon one time, and I remember the commercials vividly. I was so confused, like what kind of title is that?!
I've been waiting for ages to hear you talk about Rango since you started this Nickelodeon retrospective. My time has come.
Rango is great. Even my extremely religious grandma who hates animation (among other things/ethnicities) liked it.
Probably cuz Westerns were like a genre staple when she was little
@@RevelationsPrimo Plus nobody can hate Cowboys in the modern day, now if we're talking about real cowboys that's another thing, but modern meme cowboys, well give me a Yeehaw partner
So I read the book series that *Angus, Thongs, and perfect Snogging* is based on and holy shit the books are so much more risque, literally the sixth book in the series called "On the bright side, I'm now the girlfriend of a sex god"
Saw Rango in theaters and was rather impressed.
Saw it again a few months ago.........still impressed, movie aged quite well.
Highly recommend giving it a watch.
You could have gotten the best director, writers, and actors behind this project and it still wouldn't have worked because you just can't turn a 20 episode show into a 2 hour movie. But, what truly went wrong was getting M. Night to head the project with actors who weren't experienced/right for the part to make the movie.
52 episodes
Allegedly, M. Night got the job because the creators of Avatar the Last Airbender actually approved of his script treatment. But then that treatment wound up getting tossed out by executives when filming actually went underway. Things like the casting choices among other things were also allegedly the fault of the producers. M. Night's problem was that he just stopped caring after the interference refused to stop.
Should I mentioned he wanted an asian-cast, but ultimately the executives gave him an average budget and there wasn't any bankable actors?
@@chrisossu2070 Yeah I heard Katara’s actress was a daughter to a big named executive in Hollywood that the producers owned favors to so we're forced to cast her. This then affected Sokka’s casting since having a native American brother with a white sister would’ve looked awkward, so they casted someone to fit the actresses race.
There was also a lot of problems with the characterizations.

"it sucked"
absolute legend
Being from the UK and hearing Pan trying to do a British accent kinda hurt my PAL region soul a little.
Does it hurt more or less than a PAL video game whose speed wasn't corrected and now just runs slower? I accidentally played the PAL version of Castlevania 1 once and it was a surprisingly unpleasant experience, probably because the base game already has a very deliberate pace for movement.
@@hoodedman6579 Not as much as that but still, oof. xD

That was just awkward
"They're in the walls" that part was so seamlessly edited lmao almost thought it was real
Imagine That had Googas? Funny, I didn’t see any little colorful creatures in this movie whatsoever.
I saw the last airbender in theaters day of release in 3D. 6 people were in the theater room as well.
By the end of the film, everyone else had walked out except my family.

Blimey mate, she sent me straight to the PAL region 😔
I remember Hotel for dogs being pushed super hard, i never watchd it, but i knew it was lame and not even about dogs.
Nick movie retrospective part 5: Aka the live action downfall era
At least it got Rango. That might be the best thing they've put out in the last 20 years. It's definitely the best thing they've put out in the last 10.
@@JohnDoe-wq5eu The first two SpongeBob Movies tho.
@@chillplayer1234
Nah, those don't really count.
It was based on a highly established and very successful franchise and it was during a time when it was incredibly red hot. SpongeBob is still the golden god there at Nickelodeon, it's still the bar by which all shows succeed or fail. (Which is freaking ridiculous but then again I'm not an executive at Nickelodeon)
As we went into the 2000s I feel like Nickelodeon definitely declined significantly when it came to movies.
As a British former teenage girl I loved Angus things and perfect snogging
And I used to love hotel for dogs
Weirdest thing is that the one guy who isn't the sibling or love interest is Barry from the Goldbergs
Rango has become my all-time favorite movie. Johnny Depp is officially a real life-chameleon.
brits calling it the pal region instead of the friend-zone, i gotta use that with my brit friends.
Yeah I’m gonna use it too🤣
Fun Fact: During my short-lived time at Summer School back in 2011, and only once, the school staff decided to host a screening of Rango after lunch hour, in which the place the film was screened in was, if I can recall, a relatively medium-sized room with a blank white paint job, a projection screen placed next to the door, a bunch of metal chairs and the lights were permanently turned off the entire time.
That Nicktoons Avatar tattoo commerical just unlocked a dormant memory.
Why, Pan?
I remember watching Imagine That as a kid, and gosh golly did that movie bore me to death. Didn't even know this was supposed to be for kids before I watched this video.
Even when I was younger when the movie came out, the trailer didn't catch my interest because of how uninteresting it looked. I guess I was lucky and sorry what you went through.
I literally only remember "Ya like Scones?" "What are Scones??" From the adverts and nothing else (and I mean LITERALLY nothing else) That kid was super relatable tho, what the heck ARE scones 😆 (I of course learned afterwards)
@@TheGameCreator13 Lol what a coincidence. I just so happens to only remember that advertisement too.
Well it is PG.
@@SirBlackReeds they only suggest Parental Guidance so the kids don't fall into a coma while watching it.
I’m only 2 minutes into this but Pan roasting the British language is killing me lmao
I was so obsessed with Hotel For Dogs as a young kid for some reason...
Pan reading those book titles in that faux British voice never fails to make me laugh
“This isn’t the most dangerous hotel he stayed at” has me actually dead lmao
I remember that too!
FINALLY! Someone else points out that Imagine That and Bedtime Stories are the same movie!
Will we ever get more nickelodeon movie reviews? We still get another whole decade to go over
Tintin would be interesting because it never got a sequel.
"this ain't the most dangerous Hotel he's stayed at"

It's not a subject people bring up commonly even when they see something that's uncomfortable or wrong about the way First Nations/Native Peoples can be portrayed and it made me feel very comforted!
So imagine my surprise when this turned out to be some sort of low fantasy western with gross looking animals.
maybe Imagine That could've visually depicted the imaginary characters as cartoon characters, kind of like Who Framed Roger Rabbit
idk maybe get Eric Goldberg to do the animation or something like that
