    Hi Pete. Those wax cylinder records you have for your Edison Record player should never be held in your hands. The oils from your skin can cause mold to form on them. When I handle mine, I always start by washing my hands in soap and water. When I remove them from the cases I stick a couple fingers inside the cylinder to pull it from the case and also place them on the player. My Edison Standard player is similar to your’s except I have a smaller horn. I also have two different reproducers, one for 2 minute cylinders and one for 4 minute cylinders, and they are not interchangeable as far as I know. I purchased mine in the early 90’s. It’s a very neat piece of history. Hope you enjoy listening to it! BTW, we love watching your channel!

    • @Robutube1

      Is it actual wax they're made from? Any chance they're made from shellac? Thanks!

      @davidjeannieintexas7816 6 месяцев назад +11

      Let me start by saying I an NOT an expert on Cylinder records. The mold destruction of cylinder records is a well known problem of all types of cylinder records. I am not sure of the exact composition but several different types of cylinders were produced during the cylinder era. The mold on these recordings are caused by microscopic spores in the air and on your hands. They grow on the surface of the records during storage. The later Blue Amberol cylinders are much more durable but I still handle them with great care. These records are over 100 years old and are fragile. I try to never touch the surface when handling any of the cylinder records in my collection. Hope this helps.

    About 15-20 years ago a huge cache of cylinders was found in a German library.
    It turned out to be recordings of regional British accents that were captured for posterity by a German officer / scientist from the First World War and made by recording captured British prisoners-of-war soldiers …..the German officer was fascinated by the huge differences in the British accents over a relatively small area
    A lot of it was filmed as they were speaking into the horn that then etched the speech onto the cylinders.
    None of it appears to be done under duress and the captured soldiers were happy to comply with reading out set-passages of song , poetry or verses.
    It’s become a treasure trove material for modern linguistics to see how much or how little British accents have changed over the last 100 years…..there’s a great documentary about it here on RUclips somewhere.
