    I actually ran across this band in the streets of Toronto when they were making this video! I didn't know what was happening. I remember thinking that I had no idea Amish music was so awesome :)

    • @claypots47
      @claypots47 2 года назад +9

      😂😂😂Actually, the style of dress they wear is reminiscent of the Southern US around the 1890's and early 1900's. As for 'Amish' music, check out Weird Al's "Amish Paradise". In reality, the Amish only sing church music, worldly music is not allowed. Lucky you to be there when the video was being made. A Canadian band taking all those themes of Southern folk, country and traditional music, and twisting it in such an entertaining way.

    • @TheLostBijou
      @TheLostBijou 2 года назад +1

      I'm not really sure what they wore back then, but I kinda doubt it was black. The summer is fiercely hot and WET, so black would have been outright miserable. In the west it was more common, for some reason. Oddly enough the old people I met dressed heavy during the summer, to avoid sunburn I guess!

    • @claypots47
      @claypots47 2 года назад +2

      @@TheLostBijou They wore that _style_, and there were many different colors unlike what the Amish wear. A style isn't limited to one color, The Dead South chose black as their signature color. Amish men wear shades of black, the women wear dark solid colors. During that period fashion was transitioning from the styles of the Antebellum South, and Victorian Era, to more modern styles. Note one wears a belt rather than suspenders. One wears a long tie, rather than bow or bolo ties. Amish men don't wear ties or belts. These guys echo the fashion transition of that era, and make use of the folk, bluegrass, western, traditional music and elements that evolved into country music; but they use the darker more twisted themes. Cheating spouses, incest, murder (Scots-Irish and Scottish immigrants brought "murder ballads" from their countries to the US), etc.

    I'm in awe at the video editing. At first I thought they were performing in front of a green screen, but if you look closely you can spot subtle changes in hair, positioning and lighting from scene to scene. So, that leads me to believe they were performed separately on location and spliced together. If so, that's an amazing job.

      I'm amazed that their multiple video takes in different cities were so exactly the same that they could cut from one scene to the next and not have people 'teleport' a bit. In addition to the clever background scene changes and their humorous movements, I like that the lyrics are cryptic, even quixotic in a way. You get fast snapshots of the story, like a movie story board without the filler scenes between the bare bones. It leaves room for your mind to conjure up the full story.

      Look up Kate McCannon by Colter Wall. I believe it tells another side of the story sung in this song. I could be completely out to left field with that but the line that ties the song is the the mention of 'three rounds.' Also they have recorded songs together in the past

    Always found it funny that a band plays Tennessee blue grass(very well I might add) and calls themselves The Dead South is from Canada

    Just about a year ago I randomly came across their video for this while scrolling facebook one night unable to sleep. I was immediately obsessed finding every video I could and downloading albums. Still obsessed. Their version of You Are My Sunshine is so amazing. Listened a million times already. Can't wait to see them live. Look up their House of Blues Boston show from Jan 2020 on here- incredible!

    The greatness of the lead vocals follows by the backup carrying notes that the lead couldn’t just gives him enough time to be heard mixed with the instrumental in the background makes the song awesome

    If you like Dead South, check out Steve and The Seagulls, either Thunderstruck, or Nothing Else Matters. Definitely same feel as this group. But sounds like the original song as well.

    Never before has a song about an abusive husband that finally went and "did the deed" in an act of murder/suicide sounded so catchy.
