" it’s about a man who, uh, murders his cheating wife and is super stoked to go to hell with her, and uh, it sounds grim" - Danny Kenyon, cellist of The Dead South
"It has a banjo and it's a murder ballad. What kind of music is this?" IT'S BLUEGRASS! THIS IS BLUEGRASS! Banjos & fiddles & murder ballads are the iconic sound of bluegrass! More specifically, this is what we in Appalachia call "newgrass". It's the hipper, newer version of a classical old sound. :)
No it's not. Not sure where that comes from. He didn't kill his wife....his marriage died because of her infidelity. The red head is blood on his pillow the night after a boxing fight...Bells, smells, on his knees...boxing. It's about resilience, betrayal, being beaten by life, and losing your faith.
The song is about someone whose wife is cheating on them, and they decide to shoot both the wife and the sancho and then kill themselves. They all are going to hell as sinners but at least they will have company there. The lyric that communicates this clearly is, "After I count down three rounds(bullets) In hell ill be in good company." It's so cool y'all chose to react to this. Glad to be on this journey seeing you both expanding your appreciation for all types of music. Keep up the great work. Shout out from the 719!
I dont think it was a cheating wife! Its just a very toxic and abusive relationship. After they have an argument things get abusive their love couldnt go no further push n shoved theyre bruised and battered so he says oh lord i aint coming home sorry im taking this bitch out she stabbed me with a knife thats stuck through my shoulder lord! shes got to go dead wife is what i already told her! so after he counts down 3 rounds 2 for the wife.. pop! pop! ..you gotta make sure shes dead man the 2nd round is an insurance round for the wife cus after the 3rd round ..pop! he cant come back to finish her off if she survives one round! lol And the 2 of them get to live out eternity together in hell and in good company! Eternal toxic realationship could you imagine any worse kind of hell than that? Especially a well fed ugly ass country red headed wifey lol yuck! blah 🤣Now im gonna have nightmares of being trapped in a walmart with a sea of cankles and moo moo dresses everywhere! ahhhhh
Well done :) I also love the bar “oh lord I ain’t coming home with you” Besides the interesting melody shift, the line sounds so low key, but in the context of the song, it gets so much bigger Love these guys
I love this band! So glad you reacted! This band is from Canada. I love their “You are my Sunshine” cover. I am from Alabama and I was kinda surprised by their “twang” 😂😂
Funnily enough (just in thinking of the rammstein reactions), they are really popular in Germany. I think even their label is German, and they play here a lot. 😄
The songs about a man who caught his wife and best friend together. He kills them and decides to end his own life because he would have good company in hell. "Countdown in three rounds of Hell I'll be in good company"
Cool side note: The Banjo player, Colton, is a HUGE metalhead and used to play guitar in a death metal band. They way ive described them is "bluegrass with metal sensibilities"
Thank you for reacting to "The Dead South". This band is Canadian, and as a fellow Canadian I love these guys. Try reacting to "You Are My Sunshine" and "Black Lung". Both are incredible!
both great songs but for 2nd time ever hearing them if they decide to do another reaction should be The Banjo Odyssey all the way man! That will lock and seal the deal for many more dead south reactions! The goal is to keep them wanting to see more so we get to reap the benefits lol Banjo Odyssey sealed it for me when I discovered The Dead South! Just my take on it
Like so many others I love this Canadian band and their misfit collage of bluegrass/folk with a twist. So glad you two are exploring other artist in different genres! Because you did this reaction I'm gonna subscribe!
Revisiting the older reaction. @BlackPegasus interested in seeing another from Dead South if you decide you would like to do another. I actually heard 2 or 3 and am about to see what else they've done since. I xant recall right off but i know there was another around time i caught this one that had me raise an eyebrow at the lyrics thinking oh no they didnt just say that lol but nothing bad that would detour me as im about to check them out again after running across them on here again. Thanks and btw i think dudes instrument is a stand up bass so you git it right im thinking 👍 as always enjoy you both thanks to Don as well
It's literally a song about a double-murder suicide when a guy catches his wife cheating on him. He just breaks. Dead love couldn't go no further (because his entire perception of the relationship was shattered in the moment he saw her) Proud of, and disgusted by her (because she was able to snare this other guy) Push, shove, a little bruised and battered (referencing the confontation) Oh Lord, I ain't coming home with you (because he knows he just crossed a line and heaven ain't on the docket anymore) My life's a bit more colder (coming down from the murders, realizing he just killed the person he cares about the most) Dead wife is what I told her (self-explanatory) Brass knife sinks into my shoulder Oh babe, don't know what I'm gonna do (grief and guilt-motivated suicidal ideation here) Then we get to Danny's lines I see my red head, messed bed, tear shed, queen bee, my squeeze The stage it smells, tells Hell's bells, miss-spells, knocks me on my knees It didn't hurt, flirt, blood squirt, stuffed shirt, hang me on a tree After I count down three rounds, in Hell I'll be in good company All of this is simply him taking in the scene of the struggle that went down, the aftermath of killing his wife and her lover, and saying, fuq it. I'm going to hell, but at least she'll be there too. Very dark song, yeah, but cleverly arranged and presented. And quite the earworm. This isn't my usual genre by any mark but this song was stuck in my head for WEEKS after I first heard it.
The video was shot in Toronto ON and in/around Regina Saskatchewan which is north of North Dakota. By the way, the 'homey' is part First Nation (american: Native American).
Music has so many interpretations! Never heard this song before but I sure do like it. I was thinking about how they managed to splice the scenes together so seamlessly. Definitely put in some traveling miles to make this video. Love your reactions. Thanks for sharing.
I've seen them live twice. Great shows. So many good songs. Listen to black lung, spaghetti, deep when the rivers high. They harmonize so good. Actually just watch live at the house of blues, Boston.
I have loved this song for a few years now. I love watching the glasses move from person to person during each switch. For some reason no one comments on it. I guess that is just remnants from working in the TV industry editing and filming that makes me see small things like that.
I always understood “folk” to be an umbrella term like “jazz” or “rock” and blue grass is a type of folk, Americana is, country, even campfire songs are folk. I picture folk music as being any kind of music you can imagine being played on a back porch. Folk is not anything that requires electricity synthesizers, speakers or sound studios, just musicians and their instruments making music together…
I'm Canadian, my sister introduced me to this song due to the editing involved in creating this video. I'm hooked on this tune, don't care about the genre , when it's good....
We call this music "Southern Gothic" It's a darker form of folk, bluegrass and country music that has been around for a while but is rarely ever played on the radio. You might have heard a cover of Old Crow's song Wagon Wheel that was done by Darius Rucker a while back.

Note that he's got the chello up on his hip, this is the precursor to the blues guitar. Before they created the "electric bass" which looks like a turn-of-the-century torture device with electricity. And it worked well. But this was how they did it back in the day. Then to pull in that Appalachian influence, just rounds out this weird bluegrass/folk thing. It's deviously brilliant.

This is the first I've heard them. It's definitely different, and lots of fun! The song would have fit in very well in the movie "Brother Where Art Thou". (Yes, bluegrass.)
Yes!!!! So stoked to see you guys react to this. I love these guys. I listen to every genre of music but this is my roots. I grew up learning to play the guitar from my da. We would play bluegrass and folk together. So awesome thank you for reacting to this! Love you guys.

"Hankfan Hankfan" has the biggest selection of old timey, old country, and southern gospel that I've found on RUclips.
Congrats to hitting 100K. Well deserved.
Omg I love this song! My husband introduced me to this band few years ago.. this one is one of my favorites..
I grew up listening to Charlie Pride. I remember seeing him in concert when I was a kid way back in 1974 during the expo in Spokane
This is the first I've heard them. It's definitely different, and lots of fun! The song would have fit in very well in the movie "Brother Where Art Thou". (Yes, bluegrass.)
Blue grass is essentially folk with no drums!
I have tickets to see these guys at The Roundouse in London on 27th October this year. Small 850 capacity venue. Can't fuq-ing wait
Lol I always liked this one 🤣 just has a great vibe to it and I love the old homesteader look from the 1800s
This is on my Everyday playlist! So happy to see you reacting to this style of music! 😂❤Love you guys.
"BlueTrash" is what they prefer
This is simply Americana music. Mixtures of Bluegrass, country/ folk/ blues...😊
Good choice, they got some good cover as well !
The Dead South is a kickass band!
Love this song. And as others have recommended, listen to Banjo Odyssey. Its lyrics are interesting and one you'll never hear on the radio.
Yes!!!! So stoked to see you guys react to this. I love these guys. I listen to every genre of music but this is my roots. I grew up learning to play the guitar from my da. We would play bluegrass and folk together. So awesome thank you for reacting to this! Love you guys.
Bluegrass...most music finds its roots in bluegrass. Nice to see it coming back in new forms.
Guys, if you liked this, you'll love Split Lip Rayfield--look up "Never Make It Home"....
