@@Edias85 I think that's "grit" not fry... but I think I'd need Peter to explain the difference between the two. The number of locations I can pinpoint in the "In Hell.." video is approaching the ridiculous. I think one of the hotel rooms was the Holiday Inn by Maple Leaf Gardens.... but not enough to bet money on.
I think the way he sings through his teeth adds to the threatening character of it. I love it. I think Black Lung they have all three vocalists take lead at one point, that's always neat. Their big hit is In Hell I'll Be in Good Company which is catchy as all get out but repetitive, grittier vocals from the main guy if you can believe it.
The minor key was a brilliant choice by them. Loved your breakdown and analysis. At 70 years old and a lover of all genres bluegrass being a not so guilty pleasure, I thoroughly enjoyed this. Thank you. 😃✌
I love love love this version of this song! It actually matches they lyrics. So many people have no idea what the lyrics actually say. It's quiet morbid. I don't like to hear it sung by children or Mom's to babies. This was great! Thank you for sharing your gifts 💜
yeah, i don't get it either - always known it to be a song about loss. Might be 'interesting' to suggest they actually pay attention to the meaning of the words?
It made me smile that you mentioned wanting to hear this with a bass singer harmonizing with them. I always sing along to this as a bass and if my voice is having a good day it sounds pretty good! Great reaction!!
In Hell I'll Be in Good Company is still my favorite song from The Dead South. The official video shows off their distinctive dance moves. But whatever they sing, they're always entertaining.
I've heard this song so many times now and it still gives me goosebumps. If you ever have the chance to see them live, do it! The cello is actually their bass. I think they sometimes use a loop pedal to keep the bassline going while he's playing with the bow. And I just want to add: you have a nice voice to listen to.
My wife works at a psych rehab. She's been there over 20 years. The first person she worked with was a little lady (under 5') who was one of the feistiest, smartest people I've ever met. When she went to a nursing home she named my wife her Person of Medical Responsibility. Earlier in 2023 we lost our little old lady friend. As she lay in her hospital bed dying I sat with her and held her hand. For hours. And I sang this song to her. This version. No relation to me at all, but she became SO important in my life. She was family. This song, I hope, helped ease her and allowed her to let go. She new in the end that she was loved. I miss her so much! To make it harder, within a few months we lost her, our 17 yo teacup pom (my other little old lady), and my wife's aunt who I had been taking to chemo several times a week. I sang this song to Little (my dog) also. It has become my favorite Dead South song.
i have loved these guys since the first time i heard them. "in hell i'll be in good company" is the mest toe tapping finger snapping song about murder you will ever hear. they are a great bluegrass group but by a lot of theie lyrics you can tell they love to make subtle jabs at the genre. my favorite is banjo odyssey which contains the lyric "I guess she's my cousin But she needs some sweet lovin' anyway" hence the mocking of the genre
Your analysis is amazing! Thank you! (For what it's worth, my two favorites of The Dead South's old albums are The Recap and Achilles. My favorites from their new albums are People Are Strange and this one, You Are My Sunshine. But, really, you can't go wrong with any Dead South song. Enjoy!) (And, yes, I'd love to hear some bass harmony with them too.)
I grew up in Santa Cruz California and these guys were playing for quarters and change on the street we'd hang out all night yeah I'm glad they're doing good now my friends proud of them unless it's groovy too😂😂❤ enjoy it bro enjoy it I certainly do because I used to sit out there all night with these guys you know just one of those things the good old days it wasn't even that long ago that Batman but I'm pretty old but you get the point thanks bro
Showing off your versatility?? 🤣 From Opera to Metal to this?? Very impressive. I enjoyed your analysis, and I agree that the vibe was definitely different than the more uplifting "singing around a campfire" vibe I remember from childhood (I'm 64). Another great reaction!
I found this band, when I found the song In Hell I'll be in Good Company, it was a great song, and then I found this, and absolutely love the way they perform it. It becomes more of a dirge instead of the nursery rhyme that we are all familiar with.
'You are my Sunshine' is such an old folksy song from the 30s; and even though nowadays it's considered more like a children's song or lullaby even, this shift in tone is really more fitting since it's about and unrequited love. The lover left the singer for someone else, even after the lover said they would 'love them forever' lying - and the singer can't get over it, so much so that it's almost haunting him. Both the Jimmie Davis and Rice Brothers Gang versions made in the 40s are both still upbeat to contrast that hurt. John Cash's version while it's not as dark as Dead South's version, it is more in the lamenting area of feels at least.
Love the Dead South. I don't think this is anywhere near their best song. I like "Black Lung" and "The Bastard Son" I think I have all of their albums great group
Talking about the off-screen bass track, I wonder if you're old enough for Pomplamoose's first videos. They filmed as they recorded, so there's video of every layer, but then they mixed it, and then edited the music video to show the layers. (Also, Mumford and Sons is just the four guys. I call their genre popgrass.)
Hey Peter, nice analysis. One thing stuck out for me, that I don't think I heard you address was the entirely off-tune singing of the first singer (guitar guy) throughout the later three quarters of the tune, I suspect that it was intentional (or semi-intentional) to give the ensemble a raw 'n' rustic effect. Pitchy, oh hell yea. Discordance decorated the entire tune, lending a very fitting tension to the whole affair.
Peter, the Dead south rules!!! Do listen to more of theirs, such as 'In Hell I'll be in Good Company' and 'Banjo Odyssey'. I especially enjoyed this reaction. I am a zero when it comes to music, and you said a few terms I have heard before but don't totally know the definition of. I will look those up and try to get a little smarter!
One of the artistic choice he made there is called a vocal cry (common in males while woman were more common to use vocal squeaks) ... the thing about male vocal cry technique is when it's done in a prolonged execution (like with added riffs and runs) it becomes a "Yodelling " technique 🤔 like this example of a Filipino song which utilizes that said technique a lot.... listen the following video... just disregard the graphics ruclips.net/video/Kc_Dw9G0k_w/видео.html
THE CHORDS TO THIS ARE ; Am , F , Am , F , Am , E , Am . I DONT HEAR A BASS ; WHAT I HEAR IS THE GUITAR PLAYER HITTING THE A STRING AND THEN THE E STRING ALTERNATELY WHICH CREATES THAT BASS SOUND . ALSO I DONT CARE WHAT IS GOING ON WITH THE VOCAL CORDS . ALL THAT MATTERS IS THE WHAT IT SOUNDS LIKE . AND IT SOUNDS JUST FINE
I really like this when I first heard it,but thank you for explaining it you should definitely listen to REN I would like to know what you think of Hi Ren
What a fun group! (Tho' I too wish for a bass voice. 😏) The minor key suits this song a lot-the usual bouncy-pop renditions jar on my ears (& I *really* dislike hearing youth groups singing this song). Thanks very much for your eclectic taste & the wide range of styles you react to, & for sharing your knowledge & enthusiasm about music! On a different subject, I'm wondering if that "vocal flip into head voice" you pointed out by the lower-voiced singer can be the basis of yodeling? I don't know how yodeling works but it sounds possible to me.... 🤓
In hell I'll be in good company That's the best song at least it's my favorite please check it out if you haven't already done just tuned in❤ Peace brother You're one of us
Here's the most similar setup The devil makes three😊 I am a child of the creator of the universe The devil makes three is the name of a band it does not represent every part of me but if you want to get close to that kind of music that's similar to what you just listen to then I would say they were highly influenced by the devil makes Three say a prayer but it's good s***

I found a Dimash duet you might like. The note from the video is "Incredible Dimash Kudaibergen & Sundet Baigozhin, Tu vas me détruire/Notre Dame de Paris. Kazakh golden voices." I think you might like to react to this Sundet is an opera bass with Dimash as tenor. read somewhere that the performance was at some kind of Opera competition they were not part of the contest but guest singers. I enjoyed them a lot hope you do too. Looking forward to your reactions and comments. ruclips.net/video/8EVQNzxu43U/видео.html
My favorite Dead South song is "In Hell I'll be in Good Company." They're a funny, quirky Canadian group. I love the cello.
Yes!
My favorite song of theirs too!
The best of their songs!!
In Hell I'll be in good company has the real vocal fry!!! rsrsrs

Absolute best song of theirs. My walking song.

"You Are My Sunshine" in a minor key really hits different what else should I analyze by The Dead South?
I think the way he sings through his teeth adds to the threatening character of it. I love it.

People are Strange they made an awesome version
That minor opening is reminiscent of Kurt Weill / Bertolt Brecht's "Mack The Knife" from The Threepenny Opera
In hell you'll be in good company
My favorite song of theirs is "Boots". You can really see how good they are as instrumentalists.
The first time I heard The Dead South sing this song I was blown away!. Best version ever!!!!!
The bass is being played by the cello, the video is also all one shot. They sound just like this live, amazing group

I would love to hear you do more dead south they are a great sound very unique
14:18 on that note, this band discribes itself as the "Evil alter ego of Mumford and Sons"
Dead South rules.....plus I love their version, so dark for a song about sunshine. lol
Never heard of this group before, but this song is unique, and I like it!
Your analysis is amazing! Thank you! (For what it's worth, my two favorites of The Dead South's old albums are The Recap and Achilles. More analysis of a great version of this song than I need to know. The Dead South are one of the best contemporary bluegrass groups around.

Thanks for analyzing this song, Peter. My grandma used to sing this to me, and this is a great version.
Always enjoy your take on songs. I just found you a couple of weeks ago. Looking forward to more reactions AND analysis.
I discovered them a couple of years ago, they're awesome!!
Really enjoyed your reaction/analysis. I only recently came across Dead South, and it was great to see you react to them.
The dead south rules are my sunshine !!
I'm so glad you found The Dead South! My most watched band behind VoicePlay and Geoff!
Thanks for the video. I loved hearing your impressions of The Dead South!
I got to see them here in Australia last month. Brilliant.
Great analysis of a genre I wasn’t expecting you to review. Love it!
They have a bunch of cool songs! Blue Trash is one of my favorites!
You are my sunshine.
Love your analysis.
You passed the test bro if you didn't know music we could tell we're good thanks bro❤❤❤
Wonderful analysis
Pleasantly surprised to see you reacting and analysing this group!
Lol "yes gimme a chello" i felt that
Dead South rocks!!!

I am a Broken Cowboy is another “casual” sounding song of theirs.
Just found Dead South - and was thrilled to see you review them! I would love your thoughts on In Hell I'll be in Good Company...
That minor opening is reminiscent of Kurt Weill / Bertolt Brecht's "Mack The Knife" from The Threepenny Opera
It's a little terrifying listening to the lyrics of most songs for children. Can you imagine a collab between the Dead South and Lauren Paley?
They are amazing live
I love this. Also it’s on of my little one’s favorites
'You are my Sunshine' is such an old folksy song from the 30s; and even though nowadays it's considered more like a children's song or lullaby even, this shift in tone is really more fitting since it's about and unrequited love.

Hi Peter. I enjoy your break downs.
A lot of there stuff is in A minor. One of my favorite bands.
You would love their original songs!
Great reaction ❤
Love the Dead South. I don't think this is anywhere near their best song. I like "Black Lung" and "The Bastard Son" I think I have all of their albums great group
So many good songs. "Traveling Man" "The Recap" and "Black Lung" are some to start with to give you some ideas.
These guys have plenty of great songs to choose from, would recommend Broken Cowboy.
Hi Sunshine
Please react to her singing Lean On Me with Michael Bolton.
Talking about the off-screen bass track, I wonder if you're old enough for Pomplamoose's first videos. The celloist is the bass player and does stand up bass in a bunch of songs
"Standup" in name only, since he plays it over his shoulder
Not my typical type of music, but they are good. Thanks for the analysis.
You should do "In Hell I'll Be In Good Company"
Hey Peter, nice analysis. One thing stuck out for me, that I don't think I heard you address was the entirely off-tune singing of the first singer (guitar guy) throughout the later three quarters of the tune, I suspect that it was intentional (or semi-intentional) to give the ensemble a raw 'n' rustic effect. i think the minor change fits the mood of the lyrics much more appropriately than the major.

Yo mate u cool from England love Bob😂
I’m sure you’ve heard this before but have a look at Crash Test Dummies, Cowboy Junkies or Burton Cummings. Any song. All brilliant.
This my friend is Bluegrass 😊
great band, “black lung” is my favorite from them
Peter, I'd love to hear your reaction to Three Dog Night's Eli's Coming and Old Fashioned Love Song.
Hi Peter!
cool, thx
Interesting version of the song… great analysis.
I echo all the requests for In Hell I'll be in Good Company. It is outrageous.

Also the death south is good. Devil makes 3 is another good group.
BUT IF YOU DO ANYTHING DO TYMINSKI "SOUTHERN GOTHIC"

The Dead South call themselves Mumford and Sons' evil twin
