I'm guessing he was away fighting for longer than 8 months? Wow. That REALLY sucks. Your grandfather handled it with grace, and she lost a good man. Still, one woman's unfaithfulness is no reason to swear off marriage, like your grandfather's friends seemed to think (telling him he's stupid to marry?). After all, plenty of husbands have been unfaithful, too. My granddaddy brought his mistress into my pregnant grandmother's home, "to help her cook for the fieldhands, since she's struggling with her pregnancy and three children ten and under." The mistress couldn't make a sandwich. But she WAS three months further along in HER pregnancy than my grandmother's pregnancy. Grandmother did all the cooking, while the mistress did all the childcare, because "Divorce is a sin." They split up later on, anyway, and people in the town blamed HER. Apparently, a good woman can CONTROL a bad man and keep him from going wild, and if he has a dozen kids running around town without his name, well, that's on HER for not being a good enough wife to satisfy him. UGH! This song, a tale of love and betrayal and obsession and jealousy and possessiveness, and NOBODY IS RIGHT, HERE, can go both ways. That's why it's so darn good. Everyone who's actually LIVED for 2 or 3 decades, can relate to it, in some way.

This version is raw, and full of grief and rage and sadness, and it absolutely rips into me. It would have been selfish as all hell to wait any longer, I always promised she'd not be in pain and I made damn sure I was there until the end. I'm hurting though. I sang this song to my Rudy, he was 120 lb pit bull that kept me safe when we were surrounded by crank heads. I got him when he was 4 weeks old, when we got a better life and were safe he died, I will miss him till I die, he was my best and only friend, my son was in Iraq and he was my only family.
@@stephenmikolaitis4384 hooves more than paws, but the sentiment's the same - it's the worst and least selfish decision we have to make. My Mother sang the one verse to me as a child so any time I hear this song I instantly think of her. She passed away a couple years ago so it's bittersweet for me. That said, I really enjoyed this. Well done, gentlemen.
Just brilliant. . The original song was done in major chords whereas the DS plays it in A minor. This is a Depression era song. It's also a Prison song about a guy in stir only having this memory of this woman to keep him going. He has nothing but this memory and a Dear John letter would leave him with nothing. The use of the Cello is brilliant in enveloping us with the feeling of terrible sadness and loneliness. Thanks guys. Stay safe
Same sort of thing happened for me, she used to sing the hook for the song cheerfully to me. Then funnily enough my favorite band releases a haunting version of it like this. I hope you'll be okay man.

For those that don't know, this is Louisiana's State song, wonderfully remastered in its dark glory. I'd love to translate this to cajun french as a homage to all the pain this state and its people go through every year. From the government to environmental deterioration, everything seems to want to take a bite out of us. Viva la Acadian, et laissez les bon temps rouler!
Performed beautifully in a minor key, breathes life into the lyrics like I've never known them. It is this performance, that makes me realize that this song should have always been in the minor key. It is where this song rightfully lives. Bravo!
hey metal head, you aren't alone! these guys actually played metal before this, and had to relearn music to do this. supposedly their techniques are reminiscent of metal too, though I wouldn't know
Brilliant rendition, I love it. Never was a big fan of the song but now I am. If you're taking requests (wink wink nudge nudge) I think your bands version of Dolly Parton's Jolene would be something out of this world. Please please please do that song!
Absolutely .....and as a challenge , how about Shakespear's Sister " You're History"? I swear I just envisaged these guys doing it and it was brilliant!
Well most people are only really familiar with the refrain of it, which sounds pretty cheerful it you take it out of context. But if you actually pay attention to the lyrics it's a dark, sad, mournful song. It's about a person who is in pain. If I ever hear it sung cheerfully again it's going to sound really weird. The song has a lot of similarities to Hank Williams's "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry," enough that you could almost accuse Davis of plagiarism of the Hank Williams hit. Only problem with that hypothesis is that Davis's song predates Williams's song by nine years. They are similarly mournful and describe a person suffering toxic loneliness. For people who don't know, the song was written and recorded by Hon. Jimmie Davis, Governor of Louisiana, my home. And if that doesn't tie the knot on Louisiana being the most musically inspired state in the Union, I don't know what does. You listen to blues? How about jazz? You're welcome.
@@patrickscalia5088 @Patrick Absolutely. I think most people are familiar with the re-written lyrics which were turned into a lullaby. What's interesting about the first few versions of the original song (and it's been covered by hundreds of singers) was that they made it sound so BOUNCY. The very first version has a kind of swing music/country music sound. Even Gene Autry's version is kind of cheerful. I don't know if Johnny Cash was the first singer to cover it with the melancholy air it deserves, but I like his version, too. If you look up the lyrics to all 6 stanzas, the last one basically runs, "If only you'll come back, I'll say everything was all my fault, just come back." The song is pretty desperate-sounding, with the singer kind of abasing themselves. What I love about this version is, by tweaking the notes a little bit, you go from desperate to "If you leave me for the other guy, I WILL STAB YOUR EYES OUT." It's very "stabby." That sure beats bouncy and upbeat every time.
@@patrickscalia5088 I picture this song in a Peaky Blinders Epidsode as they are blowing away their family members. I know dark...but fitting for this show.
Damn, I play the usual version on banjo but this is so much deeper and more haunting. I can just feel the pain and heartache oozing out of this song. Epic. The bluegrass community needs more minor key songs and soulful music. You guys are epic.
I never liked this song, until I heard this version. Now I'm in love. It hits so different in a minor key with a banjo involved. I just discovered these guys recently and I can't stop listening!
I found them a year ago and feel the same. Their arrangements are outstanding. Vocals are emotional. I don't know what to say...I am a classical violinist and never thought I would love this music~
Basically, it is a Ukrainian folk song, and it is performed in two keys - basic - major, and a chorus, in a minor key, and again a transition in major. Here is an example of how it is performed by a Ukrainian folk music group: ruclips.net/video/lzIr9SGlz38/видео.html
It's funny..I saw the title and I was like, 'really, this song?' I finally gave it a go and I have played it about 980 times. Great stuff, love these guys.
You and me both. This is only the 2nd cover of the complete song I've ever completely loved. Johnny Cash sang it one day at a live concert and I have a cassette of it, one of my priceless possessions.
When I read "My only Sunshine" it brought back memories of grade school music class. All the kids singing off key, singing loud and happy. I was hesitant to listen to a cover of this song. Whoa, so long happy, loud, off king song in my head. This version is awesome! The Dead South owned this song!
Holy Fuck this was an absolutely brilliant rendition! The entirety of the music blends so well and must've taken one hell of a lot of work to make sound that tight and melodic. I just can't say enough nice things about how well this song was arranged!
My Nana used to sing this to me whenever I had a nightmare or I felt sad. Her nickname for me was "my sunshine" and for my 9th birthday she bought me an animatronic sunflower that would sing the chorus. She died a few months later, and I played that sunflower until it just gave out. I hadn't listened to this song in 20 years. Thank you for doing it justice. My Nana would have quite enjoyed your rendition.
Original intension is hard to pin down. The earliest recording by the Pine Ridge boys in 1939 seems to me to be pretty standard tempo and feeling with the addition of yodeling at the beginning and end of the song. The next version also from 1939 by the Rice Brothers Gang is listed on the label as a Fox trot. It swings with "happy" embellishments. Since there is a good argument to be made for Paul Rice being the author of the song, the original intent is murky at best. It was clearly out in world at that point with very different versions.
How enjoyable is that feeling of watching something for the first time that is staggeringly good and is probably going to be listened back a thousand times?
What genius to transpose this into a minor key...oh it's so amazing to hear this interpretation. I'm grinning ear to ear. As always the harmonies are spot on and this song gave me chills in a good way. Ponderous....just ponderous! Keep doing it boys!
I first heard a minor key version of this in 2013 by Greg Klyma. It is a brilliant spin on the familiar major version that is so upbeat that it belies the lyrical message.
Agreed... as I grew older and listened to the words of this song, it always baffled me as to why it was always sung so happily. At that point I always felt it should be played in a style more along these lines.
As a filmmaker of sorts, I have to say you guys pulled off one of the hardest shots to master and it's incredible. The coordination was on point. Oh yea, you guys also rocked the hell of this tune! Been a fan of your music for a while now! Keep Rocking!
@@smb7647 the 26 verses that exist to this song are really really dark and depressing. Look up the history. It was written my a southern governor who lost his wife to another man. Verses of suicidal thoughts, threats of violence, and fill on begging for mercy. It's not the happy song the majority of the world holds it to.

One of the only times I ever saw my grandpa cry was at my grandma's funeral. His final goodbye, he leaned in close to her open casket and sang this song as it was one of her favorite when she was younger, tears in his eyes as he sang. He finished and gave her a kiss on her forehead and left.

Stay safe

God yes, I love the minor key arrangement! Absolutely brilliant!
This came out right when my fiancée broke up with me. The melody is still haunting me. So sad. So real. So unexpected. Just fit perfectly.
Same sort of thing happened for me, she used to sing the hook for the song cheerfully to me. Then funnily enough my favorite band releases a haunting version of it like this. I hope you'll be okay man.

Performed beautifully in a minor key, breathes life into the lyrics like I've never known them. It is this performance, that makes me realize that this song should have always been in the minor key. It is where this song rightfully lives. Bravo!
As a pure metalhead, I’ve GOT to see these guys live! So beautiful!
As a fellow metalhead, they're fucking great live. They have a mesmerizing stage presence, they're truly an alluring group with great music.
One of the best live shows you'll ever see. One of the highlights of my year when they pass through town
Metal head too - one of the best shows I have ever been to. Such a party
hey metal head, you aren't alone! these guys actually played metal before this, and had to relearn music to do this. supposedly their techniques are reminiscent of metal too, though I wouldn't know
As a fellow metalhead that just went to see Lorna Shore, I could not agree more. I would kill to see these guys live
This may be one of the first songs I heard in my life. Only after seeing the dead souths version do I realize what it really means
Brilliant rendition, I love it. Never was a big fan of the song but now I am. If you're taking requests (wink wink nudge nudge) I think your bands version of Dolly Parton's Jolene would be something out of this world. Please please please do that song!
your right, i would like to hear that, good request
I'd like to hear it up against the Sisters of Mercy version :)
Absolutely .....and as a challenge , how about Shakespear's Sister " You're History"?
I swear I just envisaged these guys doing it and it was brilliant!
Completely agree. I saw the title and thought, this cannot be good. It wasn't. It's great.
Also agree. 👍 I heard someone play it on 33rpm and it sounded great.
Brilliant! Only you guys could make "You Are My Sunshine" sound vaguely menacing, like a murder ballad lite. I love it.
@@patrickscalia5088 Maybe Hank Williams did the plagiarism...
No shit! A little dark. Over
But I loved it!

When I read "My only Sunshine" it brought back memories of grade school music class. All the kids singing off key, singing loud and happy. I was hesitant to listen to a cover of this song. Whoa, so long happy, loud, off king song in my head. This version is awesome! The Dead South owned this song!

Never heard this song done this way, but ya gotta believe given the lyrics this was more how the song was meant to be performed. Nicely done!!!
This is actually how the song was originally done. It was never intended to be the happy melody we are all familiar with. Love this rendition
Check out my 2013 version - it's not a new idea 😉
Original intension is hard to pin down. The earliest recording by the Pine Ridge boys in 1939 seems to me to be pretty standard tempo and feeling with the addition of yodeling at the beginning and end of the song. The next version also from 1939 by the Rice Brothers Gang is listed on the label as a Fox trot. It swings with "happy" embellishments. Since there is a good argument to be made for Paul Rice being the author of the song, the original intent is murky at best. It was clearly out in world at that point with very different versions.
The Civil Wars also did a really great version of this.

@@smb7647 the 26 verses that exist to this song are really really dark and depressing. Look up the history. It was written my a southern governor who lost his wife to another man.
