    Based off a new (2016) HQ source filmed by WillSalas CymbalMaker (first time off the tape). A second angle (hi-gen VHS) has been in circualtion for years - used here sparingly for fills/ambience. Audio is a mix of the DAT FLACs taped by JJ and the audio on the new Willy video.
    This show took place on the day news broke that Kurt Cobain of Nirvana had killed himself. In 2005 Billy Corgan wrote in a liveblog about how he reacted to the news (billycorgan.livejournal.com/21...
    ===
    Billy: "The Gulf of Mexico [1994][May. 23rd, 2005|06:54 pm][Tags|1994, confessions, kurt cobain, suicide]
    "The phone rings way too early, jarring me out of a sweet, humid sleep…the window is open and the sun pours in as the ocean air sweeps through the room…it looks like a beautiful day…”Did you hear the news? He’s gone and killed himself”…my first twilight thought is that it can’t be true, because even I have been reported dead two separate times in the last year (driving down the road, my father had recently heard a report that I was dead, so it must be a rumor or a bad joke)…the t.v. in the room is one of those standard pieces of shit where you need a remote to turn it on, cause they hardwire the front controls off so you can’t jack the channels around to get the movies for free…I flip on CNN with the sound off, figuring if there’s any truth to it that they would have it…there is nothing on at this moment except a general news report, so it must just be a mistake…then I start to think that maybe they won’t care at all and that this might not be the source for information…about 20 seconds in they flash his picture…the talking head is talking away, and my stomach drops about 1,000 feet…I mumble to whoever is on the line for a minute or so, but I don’t remember what I said…they remind me that they are very glad I am still here…I put down the phone, and all is really quiet now…his picture is still up on the screen, frozen…it is one of those rare moments in life where the entire world seems to be stopped, waiting for the next breath…my mind races around to “where is she? I hope she is alright”…I sit on the edge of the bed and just stare at the screen…I cannot believe my eyes, it is just all so sad…I don’t pray, but I do now…I pull myself down to the floor, my back pressed up against the bed, the t.v. screen just a foot away from my eyes…I say a prayer for his soul, thanking him for all the good he has done…I pray a lot for his child, who is now without a father…and I start to cry and I don’t stop until there are no more tears to cry…"

    If anyone ever asks what the 90's were like(early 90's)tell them to go to 19:40 of this video. BTW - I was there in that mass of bouncing, angst filled teens! 18 and about to graduate. Depressed about Kurt, but The Pumpkins helped us all get through it. The last great era for rock music.

      It was truly a different scene with nothing but energy. I've never felt a scene like the early 90s shows. Amazing time we witnessed.

    • @jared699
      @jared699 2 года назад +3

      @CajunRulez We're just about the same age. I would have just turned 17 when you were at this show. I don't know about you but I consider my high school years to be very transformational for my still developing mind.
      The 90's were a great time to be alive (right on the edge of the internet era) and the music from the early part of that decade is, in my opinion, the best to ever be made. I was in high school from '91 to '95 when albums were being released such as Siamese Dream, Ten, Nevermind, Dirt, Blood Sugar Sex Magic, Ill Communication, 40 oz. to Freedom, The Chronic, Rage Against The Machine, The Downward Spiral, Pablo Honey, Blind Melon, Nirvana Unplugged, etc. etc. etc. LEGENDARY, GAME CHANGING SH*T. There are so many more albums I could list (Dookie, Ritual de lo Habitual, Ready To Die, Achtung Baby....OK, I'll stop).
      Anyway, now to get to what I wanted to say about your comment...I agree that the period we are discussing is currently the last great era for rock music. But it's only the "last great era" at this point. I do believe there will be other eras in the future that will be revolutionary for music. Right now, I'd say the early 90's and the late 60's/early 70's have been the most influential periods for rock music. And when I say this, I'm not dismissing the music from other eras. There is always great music being made. But there is not always music being made that changes the lives of listeners.

      I had turned 18 five months before. My friends and I rented a van and were driving to the show from Washington, Louisiana. We heard the news about Kurt at a rest area we stopped at to get our heads right bc my friends gf wouldn’t let us in the van. We were all still in disbelief getting to the concert but when Billy mentioned it, it became real to me. I don’t remember much about the show tbh. Geek and Siva that’s about it. This brought back memories no doubt.

      Omg I remember! I was there for that part of the tour because my brother was close friends with Jimmy and after a while they hired my brother to provide security for the gear, especially the guitars.
      Basically he made sure the roadies didn’t steal shit. But yeah, I can confirm he said it. I knew the set list really well because it’s basically the same set as they did in the southern states. So I came out stage left to hear disarm. And that was my spring break as a kid, hanging with big bro and his friends the pumpkins.
      I have many stories about them, Jimmy and my brother Thor were friends before they recorded Siamese Dream.
      The place where Jimmy would sneak off to during recording Siamese dream was to Nashville with my brother.
      He would pick him up in Atlanta and just get into trouble wherever they went. I never knew about the heroin until I got older. My brother said he was the upper and jimmy was the downer and drove to Atlanta and Nashville, sometimes stay in Chattanooga and back all the time. Jimmy was in my basement during one of those times like at 6am and that’s when I first met him. He mumbled I good taste because I had a REM Out of Time shirt on.
      They were so wasted... I knew of Gish but I had no idea who I just met until later on.
      I’ll never forget these experiences. My brother Thor told me everything about them as he did continued to do security for their gear and sometimes for them. I saw them record Mellon Collie one day even though it was exciting, it was boring as hell hearing a drum track played for 6 hours. I saw James overdubbing in one room and Billy and Jimmy tracking in another. They did like 30 songs just rockn away ideas while recording.
      Anyway my brother became relatively sober and ended up helping Jimmy get sober and it made me understand at a young age that addiction was a disease.
      Jimmy is an amazing soul, actually they all are and helped me peruse a writing career in music and Billy gave me their 16 track Tascam they did demos on.
      Sorry for the ranting of stories, the fact Kurt died that day, it flooded so many memories of my life and “this is for Kurt” was said. I’ll try to find an audio archive.

    A very intense show. A large tour by then, lots of energy and mixed emotions around the band and Cobain's death. Well, Corgan once said he was sort of close at the end of Kurt's life, cause he had been seing Courtney in early 94, so, he knew what went on. Great gig this one.

      +antidote2k I did too,...Im from Mississippi and I was there, Totally agree on the weird feel in the air.
      It also seemed like they werent really in the bad moods towards each other that they always were in the other 10 times I've seem them. Like they let the usual not really getting along go for this show and it shows in the performance and how good they sounded overaround.
      One thing I always noticed in that they always normally ended the shows on the Siamese Dream tour with "Silverfuck", It was the longest, loudest and most intense song on the album and it always made a great show ender, Yet they chose to end it with an unknown tune from an album that wasnt out yet instead....
      They knew in would be inappropriate due the Middle of "Silverfuck" where everything goes silent and Corgan repeats "Bang Bang,Your dead, Hole in your head. 4 times.

    It's hard to deduce whether or not Billy had heard the news of Kurt's suicide before this show, his journal entry describes a five hour bus ride right after a show, but by online records of this tour there was no show on April 7th, so the bus ride could have been after this show (from Biloxi to Tallahassee). OTOH, he describes the sea air like he first encountered it after a while, as if he arrived to Biloxi that morning, and got the news there. Also, I don't know at what time did the news break on the west coast, and would it add up to being woken up during the day with the news.

    Cobain's death and the cringy grunge legacy with all key figures just being reflections of him just infuriates me. I mean I am probably a bigger Nirvana fan than any other band I love, but how that came to be while all these other great artists went on in his shadow is just so wrong. Someone I have massive awe and respect for because of this is the guitarist Dylan Carlson, look him up. Billy Corgan is one of the few people who at least tried not to become too self aware post grunge and just went with the flow. I know he's quite nutty but such a creative heart.

      Not very often but I've seen at least one more show from this era that starts off with that track

      I looked up the setlists....they opened with Soma 6 days earlier in Texas. So no.....would have been cool gesture but they were doing it anyways at times back then.

    April 8th, 1994? The news of Kurt was on this day.

      Kurt died on Tuesday the 5th. Friday the 8th was Courtney's 'press conference' for her new album coming out Tuesday the 12th, where she had the audacity to read his suicide note...so she could promote her widow status to help sell her record and build herself a reputation. That was the day that everyone outside of Seattle heard the sad news.

      Huh? Captured the crowd and the reverb. Great audio for a none soundboard.

      Try to find another video shot on Hi-8 with better audio. And it’s not through the soundboard. You’re crazy if you think it can get any better.

      @@alanhinkel4670 Calm down, it is what it is. Whether it's Hi-8 or whatever, it's still poor quality. So don't try to tell me some bullshit. The audio is just pathetic and it's too bad. What that may be due to is obsolete because the audio quality remains poor.
